Massive battery drain with heavy use! - HTC Sensation

Before I start, I'm actually fairly happy with the battery life on the sensation. Today it's been off the charger for about 4 hours and I'm still at 97% with little use and some light browsing. So for general such as idle and browsing, it isn't bad.
I have noticed, however, that the battery life sucks when doing intensive things, such as gaming. I lose easily over 30% an hour when watching videos or playing games. The other day I was sitting through a boring meeting, so I played a tower defense game I had. I had about 60% battery life when I started and my phone died in about an hour and a half. My screen brightness was a bit higher than it should have been, but it wasn't full.
I understand it will drain a ton with heavy use, but 60% in less than 2 hours is insane. I took a 25 minute car drive with navigation and my battery dropped over 20%. That's just crazy.
Has anybody else experienced this? What percent/hour do you lose when gaming? It basically means I can't do much gaming or I'm at risk of my phone dying before the day is done.

Bro, what u think gone happen gaming for an hr, with its big screen on that long? Nothing u said I find abnormal from my experience with this phone, are my last 4 phones. Heavy use = drain

Yeah, I realize that it's gonna drain a lot with gaming. At the same time, I don't think 40% an hour is something to be expected. I'm hoping it was just a weird battery cycle.

yeah, i played plants vs zombies and the battery died real fast. However cut the rope doesnt drain the battery that bad. Depends on game but most phones have poor battery life when you do intense stuff.
the nintendo 3ds has a much bigger battery and also has a poor battery life. Battery technology is crap.

...batteries drain faster under heavier loads bro.

My stock battery its wank, easily lose 30% an hour on angry birds but I bought an anker 1900mA from Amazon and after taking it off charge this morning at half 7 I've still got 26% left as I write this, nearly 16 hours later.

Have you tried one of the Aftermarket batteries? I have the Anker and it's safe to say that it does last longer than the stock HTC battery for me.

This thread is kinda funny. You know i just realized? that when i dont eat, i get hungry. Also when i drive like a maniac I use a lot more gas. Another thing new to me concerning batteries, and its on topic because we're talking batteries.... I left my flashlight on this morning and now its dead. Normally when i don't use it it can go weeks without charging.. But please dont leave the light on, it causes massive battery drain!! 1 more thing.. When i'm nice and helpful i get "thanks". When i'm sarcastic i dont

I just wanna work for that company... Whip out the phone and play games during meetings. My apps in!

i only play games now when hook up to charger now

Haha, joke all you want, but coming from the G2X I couldn't kill 60% of the battery in 1.5 hours if I tried.
Go ahead and defend the device all you want, but something about this device destroys the battery more than normal when the screen is burning and the processors are burning.

I agree. This phone has much better standby and general battery life compared to my vibrant, but I have noticed that the gps really burns through battery, moreso than the vibrant.

I actually am really liking the battery life on my sensation, just was in a joking mood. Coming from the EVO 4g i get twice as long with my S4G. Think about it though, you have a 1.2,3,4,5,6,7,or 1.8ghz cpu, depending on Overclock or not, Massive screen resolution, awesome game graphics that take every bit of the CPU/GPU to run them. And it's All running from a tiny ass battery. Look at laptops... If you play a system taxing game for an hour your battery will be toast, and that battery is a lot bigger. I think for what it is, It does a good job.

App to drain battery

I was wondering if anyone had a good app to drain the battery. I have heard that with Lithium Ion batteries it is a good idea to charge them to 100%, drain them, charge it back up, wash, rinse, repeat a few times in order to get the battery to the maximum amount of life.
1) Is there any truth to this practice?
2) Is there an app for this process?
From what I was told on other forums is the exact opposite. It is the old batteries that had what was called a memory and would not hold as good of a charge over time. I was told lithium ion actually works good when giving little charges here and there and does not need to be drained. I don't remember if I was told that here or on howard forums.

It's really not needed with a lithium ion battery, but some people still feel good doing it. There is an app called Screen Test. Once you load that you can switch to an all white screen at max brightness. Play some streaming music in the background and that should do it

This is absolutely true. The only thing a full discharge does for you is increase the accuracy of the battery meter.

what i did, was set my hero so it wouldn't turn the screen off, connected to my WiFi to get internet, and have music streaming till it dies, I've done it twice already to my Evo battery, I've got my hero battery in my Evo for now

Just to actually contribute, I'll confirm what jeffrimerman said. The memory effect is most seen using Ni-Cd batteries, and somewhat (very little) on Ni-Mh batteries. Lithium Ion batteries actually aren't good to drain completely every time. Charging here and there, or even leaving your phone on the charger should, in theory, have absolutely no negative impact at all on the battery.

Touch Pro 2 battery In DZ

Hey All,
Today I decided to look into a larger capacity battery for my DZ NAM, and I took a look at my old Touch Pro 2...
The Battery fits quite well, its 1500mAh as opposed to the 1300 with the DZ.
I had to trim out the plastic on the TP2 battery, and then place it in upside down.
The cover pops up slightly after the battery is in, nothing that would bother you lots, in other words its not as flush as the original DZ battery.
I am going to use it to swap out between my 2 batteries.
Hope this helps, not bad for a free battery in my case
Great news !!
I have also a BA-S390 from my old Touch Pro 2... I'll try this tonight !
When you charge the battery inside the phone is it getting hotter or colder than the original DZ battery ?
I just got 2.5 days out of my stock Z battery and still had 60% left (granted didn't use it much).
I left my charger at work, and had a snow day yesterday.

Len,
To get 2.5 days out of a smartphone you must firstly not be overclocking at all, and secondly you must not have used it one bit.
2.5 days = total non usage
Even the iphone4 with its powersaving a4 chip does not get 2.5 days, unless you dont touch the beast.
And i like to generally use my phone

You are right, I hardly touched the phone at all, I did need it as an alarm twice in the time I was without a charger. (I was forced into this situation by leaving my charger at work)
But it shows that with no use the phone only loses 1% a day.
I generally lose about 2-4 percent an hour not in use. But my phone is sync'ed up to everything, lol

Who said anything about fuss?
I was pointing out that the TP2 battery works, and is larger capacity... I have a ton of reasons to have a second battery and would rather not spend an extra $40.
I travel lots... and I use my phone to watch tv on the plan.
Not sure about how hot the battery gets on charge, haven't used it much yet.
As for the original I get 2 days with moderate use.

Just that there have been lots of complaints about battery life on this phone (and the desire HD)...those people obviously never had a Desire as the battery life on the Z and HD are loads better than the desire ever was.

I'll do a little test tonight/tomorrow and report back.
Cheers
I have descended from tp2pro aswell, and must admit that I have used my old tp2 battery from the second day I had a DZ. I must admit I have 'trimmed' it so that it doesn't cause any bulge on the metal flap covering the batt compartment, and I can say that even though the old batt is 6 months old it performs well enough to get me through the whole working day. I do make a lot of calls a day, I keep I-net connection constantly on, and I never switch Bluetooth off....
I realize its a heavy load on the battery but afterall I got the fone to do its job (calls, emails, driving, gps, etc).
The battery lasts well into from 8am to 7pm (with my heavy usage) but must say that whenever I'm driving I will have fone charging, regardless of its power level.
Nevertheless, I have a spare battery at hand ( original DZ one) should the worst happen.
FYI, my daily batt stats is usually as follows: display 30percent, voice calls 35 percent, and remaining 35 percent spread somewhat evenly amongst remaining series that have to run in the background.
Unfortunately though, I haven't got enough experience with the original DZ battery, to give you a comparison.... remember I used it only for a day or two, when I was still getting used to the whole new world of android and DZ

Does anyone have experience with the 1800mAh Mugen battery from the TP2 in the DZ? I'm tempted to go for that assuming it fits...?

Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
My friend can only use it for less than a day..
heavy user
I only manage a day at best - no better than my legend was actually!
I got this yesterday, was playing on it several hours.. and battery life is about 18-20hrs for heavy usage. Wall charging is quick, about 2hrs max charge.
It gets warm easily when accessing web. Is this normal on HTC Android smartphones?
Yes its very normal :=)
Just got mine for almost a week. The battery lifetime is 2-3 days (normal use). I hope though that after a few complete charges it will rise to 3-4 days...
Can testify to the same experience of warming up (especially when using wi-fi).
At first, the battery life of the HTC ChaCha was really crap! It couldn't even last 1 day (heavy use). But now I have this feeling that it is getting a little bit better after a few full charges. And it also recharges very quickly.
And what do you mean by "full charge"?
2hrs or more?
I'm not sure how ya'll are getting more than 12 hours of battery from this phone. See my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171136
Well, it lasts for me longer than 12hrs
I expected to have around 48hrs with it.
If awake time is how much is it up after charging, it say: 18hr 57min. Battery left: 44%.
So those of you getting a FEW days out of this, do you ever turn it off (say at night) or is the handset always on/idle?

I ditched the Captivate a while ago. Just sick of typing on a screen.
Switched to the Blackberry 9700 and now this phone.
I think the Blackberry 9900 will be a sexier device but I definitely prefer the Android over over Blackberry OS6.
During high usage battery life about 12 hours...
My father played angry bird for 1 hour and the batt drop to less than 50% (after full charge)
Update: Battery life of this device is ridiculous. Seriously.
Switching back to my BB 9700 soon.
I can get up to 3 days of batter life when the phone is completely idle. This doesn't happen too often so with regular use, I can get up to 2 days of battery life.
Heavy usage gives me around 6-8 hours of battery life, which is still much better than Blackberry phones. My old Blackberry was at 60% and it literally died within an hour of using GPS and turn by turn navigation.
Overall, it's a pretty decent battery life, but it does get pretty hot at times like others have pointed out!

Larger capacity batteries

Has anyone tried one of these yet ? I have seen 1900mah ones on ebay but wonder if they really give you anything more over the stock battery.
Becareful they might be dangerous for your phone
I have seen someone complaning about over voltage. 1900mAh seems like a good option but it should be reliable as well.

1900 ECELL MAH Battery
got just about 16 hours hours from an Ecell 1900mah battery, I had screen brightness on more or less full capacity and Wifi enabled for around approximately 4 and a half hours before I disabled wifi and reduced screen brightness down to just above a quarter. Used the phone for browsing, 10-12 minute phone call, 25 mins of game play throughout the day which included samurai vengeance THD (ten minutes), N64oid emulator (FZERO and MarioKart) and and one full game of real football in 3D. I've found that the 1900 battery gives you roughly around four and half extra hours than the 1500 battery. Reducing display brightness to just over a quarter and having wifi disabled along with moderate use of the phone will easily get you through the day with the 1900 battery. Have not seen any adverse effects from using the battery such as overheating either.

5000 mAh O.O

Has anyone used any Apps that claim to report battery capacity?
I have Battery Monitor Widget which claims the battery is only holding 1200mAh when on the battery it claims it should be 1500mAh.
I am dubious about its accuracy though as it doesn't seem able to report how much the battery is currently draining, although that should be more hardware specific than reading the battery capacity I would think?
It is kinda odd though as the first 15% seems to drain really fast and then it gets slower. I have literally seen it go from 100% to 96% in a few minutes doing nothing particularly taxing. Yet it can easily run for many hours web browsing with screen brightness on auto.
what is the widget called as mine drains very fast i have lost 16% in 2HRS 33. which is crazy.
Could using different launchers have a effect i wonder, this is a great phone but this sort of battery drain is plain crazy.
Edit . just found the one you mention and it says mine is a 1200 also , would be interesting to see if its accurate on a different phone.
It just seems odd that I can have it fully charged, go to bed with airplane mode on and its still down to 85% when I wake up despite nothing obvious using any CPU power. The big battery drain is always Android System, in fact I think that is ALWAYS the case even if I sit with the screen on which I always got the impression the screen was meant to be the biggest power drain on phones?
If I go to bed without airplane mode on its pretty much identical, which doesn't seem right at all considering it would be connected to WiFi and HSDPA (data mode off).
That said in ACTUAL use it seemed to last me a days use quite well. I'm just a bit puzzled that the widget claims the battery is not what its supposed to be and that the phone is showing as losing the first 20% really fast.
Don't get me wrong, the overall battery life to 0 seems not too bad, I am just concerned that perhaps there is something I can do to improve it further.

This external charger is good. I am using one. I use it for charging PSP as well.
It can charge 2 phones at same time. I tried the following combinations:
htc desire + aria, sgs + aria, 2x sgs, sgs+o3d..
one of the port is 1A, so it just feels like charging the phone off a normal charger. One this thou, this thing is heavy light a phone
if you are having short battery life check in the applications menu to see what apps are still running cuz i discovered the hard way that sometimes when you exit a 3d game the game doesnt actually quit and just sits in the background eating up 65% of your battery life. nova seems to be bad for it.

3 day 10hr on battery

Hey,
Been getting great battery life on CM7, with texting, calls mostly, nothing extra.....
Just wanted to share.
I see it was put back on charger.....
Looks like it was charged from 30% to 75% halfway through.
Just noticed the spike up. How long was it on your charger?
it says 3day 13hrs but on battery it says 3d 11hrs right now

Well can you explain the spike? Induction charger? Bug? I've seen some custom battery drivers included with some kernels that make the battery level go up at times. That was after only a day of use, perhaps it evens and lengthens out over a period.
