After seeing a few posts (by ocdetails and desirez_pete) I wanted to try the mod myself. Thanks to their advice, I was able to do it pretty easily in one sitting. During the process I decided to take pictures just for the sake of having some kind of record, and since I didn't see any picture-filled guide on how to do this in our forum I thought I'd provide one to help those who might have been intimidated at the thought of this DIY. It's really quite easy!
I ordered a 1' x 6" sheet of "Black M500 3D Carbon Fiber Vinyl Stripe Wrap Sheet 6in" from an eBay seller named metrorestyling. It's basically a knock-off of 3M's DI-NOC carbon fiber vinyl. This sheet is enough material to do this mod for 6 battery doors.
I started by putting one edge of the battery door along one edge of a piece of paper, then outlining the rest. Next I taped the paper on the vinyl such that the straight edge of the paper was aligned with the carbon fiber weave.

A razor will cut the vinyl very easily. I then took off the back side of the carbon fiber vinyl, laying it sticky side up. I aligned one edge of the battery door with one edge of the vinyl and applied it starting from that side (like applying a screen protector).
It was already on really smoothly but I used heat from a hair dryer set to medium to smoothen as much as possible. One quote I read online was, "If the heat is to [sic] hot for your hands, then it’s hot enough for the vinyl."
Now this is where I should have done something better. With the excess vinyl not stuck onto the back of the batter door I immediately started cutting. I first cut it while trying to stay parallel to the battery door plane, so I can cut off excess later if necessary. While cutting I noticed it was better to cut with inward strokes, e.g., in the picture below I would move the knife down and left to avoid pulling the vinyl away from the battery door edge.
What I should have done is wrap the excess around while applying heat, followed by immediate cooling to "set" the vinyl in place around the edges. This unset vinyl along the edges gave me a little trouble later
This is what it looked like after a very, very rough cut.
This is where I realized my mistake above. I had to constantly reheat the edges to get good adhesion to the battery door edge, followed by immediate cutting. And since the adhesive film was unset, it kept accumulating on my knife, making it dull every so often
Side view:
To cut more vinyl off along the edges, I cut at an angle.
Preliminary fit was too tight, and the battery door wasn't fully pressed down. Also, my cutting was VERY sloppy on the speakerphone hole
So, I cut more.
It fit much better along all edges
And that's all there is to it! I hope this helps those who want to do this mod.
Looks good! I suggest you re-apply it a few more times and you should be able to get it perfect.
And another thing I forgot to tell you was try to stretch the vinyl over the edges while heating it to get the best adhesion but don't stretch it so that it distorts the carbon pattern. My application is still fully stuck on after 2 months
very nice!
looks good man. I'm think about doing something like it!
Thanks for this. I just bought the same sheet you bought. Hopefully it will arrive this week.
looks good, I am going to give this a try!
I did this the other day using your guide. I screwed up a little bit on the flat side by cutting off too much, so some of the door is showing, but overall I'm happy with it.

From what I've been told, the stuff comes right off when heated and residue can be removed with typical residue removal solution. If you bought the same sheet as me, you know how much more there is to use in case you want to retry it

Really nice work you have there. Does that carbon fiber give it a better feel? Or not make it so slick in your palm?
Actually after using the phone with the vinyl for 3 months I found it makes grip worse. I'm thinking of adding a layer of plastidip over it for better grip.

I like it very much. First cut btw

So after having my G2 for a few months now, my one small problem is the battery door. Honestly, it's very nice, at first, but now mine is all scratched up and ugly
So I'm wondering if there's any battery doors that's not a cover, as in you put over your original one, but has a soft texture like the rest of the G2.
Something like this
Like this
I've been looking, but it doesn't look like there's anything of that sort :/
would be nice if it also matched with the G2, I wonder why no one has made something like this.
One of the things I tried out was buying a small piece of carbon fiber sample off of eBay for a few bucks. Goes on like a sticker and you can cut it to shape with a x-acto knife. Also comes off clean which is nice. I also noticed a small increase in grip on the back of the phone. Defiantly a "Under 5 bucks" beautiful mod.
Try using something like the Zagg Invisible Shield, Body Guardz, etc. The film is clear and offers a slight rubber texture.

+1 for ZAGG, the skin works a treat on my Z, even if a little tricky to fit
I wrapped mine with carbon fiber vinyl. I bought a huge roll of the stuff for like $15 bucks and have been wrapping everything from the back of my iPad to parts on my motorcycle and I still have a crazy amount left. I'll have to take a picture of it on the back of my phone with another camera. Or maybe just go find a mirror somewhere...
edit: Well, you get the idea. There is really ****ty light in the bathroom in this office. Better than the scratched up aluminum piece that was there before. I liked how it looked, but I got a couple scratches in it that I didn't appreciate, so covering it seemed like a good idea.

Just completed the 3M carbon vinyl mod:
Would definitely recommend others to do something similar, better grip and no scratching on the cover.
Or... you could just get the whole carbon fiber skin and not have to cut anything yourself.
http://phantomskinz.com/htcdesirezchromatics.aspx
It's a bit pricey at $30, but much easier and it'll fit the whole phone, not just the battery door.
What if I don't want to cover the entire phone? Or I happen to have some vinyl lying around? And its fun to DIY
The application that skin can still be messed up by the average user unless you want to risk shipping to them and be without the phone for god knows how long.

Meh... When my clear coat started to come off I went to the store and bought some 800 and 1000 grit sand paper. Rubbed away with the 800 using hot water and took all of the clear coating off, then moved to 1000 grit where rubbed some more then added a bit of hand soap and kept rubbing. The battery cover has a nice shiny brushed looking finish now.

Another good thing about applying the vinyl to just the cover is that it raises the thickness slightly to match the silver camera surround so that when you put the phone on a flat surface its less likely to scratch the surround bit.

Woah, I'm really impressed by both your efforts. I didn't even think of doing this, but now...... I think I might look into it. Any tips for anything that could save me trouble down the track?
And Vln_Thomas: Did you measure out a piece beforehand and then stick it on or did you stick it on and then cut?
EDIT: Although, now that I think about it, I don't even know where I'd get carbon fibre tape. Australia sucks like that.

I´ve simply bought a 4*8 Inches sized Fibre tape.
Then i attached it on my backcover, heated the tape with a hair dryer and pulled it around the corners. When a part of the Cover was without folds, I let it cool down so that the tape cured and then cut a part of the fibre tape off.
Then I heated the cover again and the procedure started once more.
It took me for about 45 minutes and a very steady hand, even though a friend supported me.
That's awesome! Where did you buy the tape? I'm hoping that it was online...
Here : 3M™ DI-NOC™ CA-421 Carbon Folie
10*20cm are 4*8 Inches, enough for the Galaxy S

Exactly the same here... My edges just didn't get perfect because i was afraid to break them... I was usign the hair drier and it looked like the back cover was going way too wobbly (i don't know the word opposit to "hard"). So pulled it as I could by the edges, wait to cool down and cut off the resting tape..

But just a warning, the backcover usually gets really hot when the phone is charging while running demanding apps. So you might want to be careful doing that in case it is not releasing its heat buildups as easy anymore. Would be sad to have it overheat after making it look so awesome.

I guess so, I just thought it might become a problem if getting rid of all that heat got harder. Mainly because the original gets very hot, and the phone once came up with a warning on mine about not charging the phone while using it so much, I think I was using it to watch a full HD video or something, that I had not bothered to convert to something more fitting to the SGS. But it is nice to use it as a portable media centre.
What a great idea!! Here's me probably bought about 6 different battery covers and cases and always got rid of them because they never fit properly, or if I find one i DO like then they get cracks or the paint wears off.
And this is using the original! Brilliant idea.
Does the tape make the sides of the cover wider than the phone? You know how some cheap badly fitting battery covers seems to stick out at the sides where they should join seamlessly?
Of course it´s a bit thicker, but it fits pretty well Much better than those rubbish Back-covers from Ebay
And to clarify it: There is no problem with overheating at my phone at all....
Battery temps are the same as without the tape so i guess CPU and everything else will be the same too
Anyway temperatures highly depend on the modem-file you use...
I've got (yet another) back cover on the way from eBay, but I think this one may fit just right after talking to the seller... but this carbon tape idea i love! I was thinking about sanding down my stock Samsung back because i love the fit and everything, its' just too damn slippery.... and paint would scratch off over time. but sanding it (if it could be done evenly) would fix that.
Might consider this idea though. I wonder what different types of tape there are.... hmmm....
Bought a broken thunderbolt on ebay one night * drunk bidding never turns out good * anyways, the phone arrived and actually turned on even though it was sold as not turning on. So I ordered a lcd and digitizer and while waiting on them to arrive I fixed a crack in the casing with epoxy and bondo, and repainted the case grey. I had the bright idea if painting it white. I'll throw up some pictures soon, the phone isnt all back together yet and I still need to finish polishing the kick stand, but I'll post progress pictures once they are done uploading..

and then the epoxy
lil bondo
and the grey paint
and now white
Also the extended battery back was all scratched up so I roughed it up filled it and sprayed it the grey color, I thought it would be too much white.
Nice job, mate. Hope it all works out for you.
Thanks man, all seems well. I just need to sand down so rough edges on the bottom, put another coat on it and let the paint fully set up for a few days before putting the phone back together. I hope it sets up well and holds up. I think it will be a good phone for someone, may require a wrap to protect the phone. I imagine it will sell for 300 or so
I briefly thought about remodeling mine in the same sort of way. Go all black though, dInc2 style. It's cool to have something unique. How did you polish the kickstand?
That actually looks cool!
Sent from my Thunderbolt running CyanogenMod 7 using the Tapatalk app.
The best way to go about the kick stand is either 800 grit sand paper, or red scotchbrite. Tape the phone down to a table and tape under and around the kick stand, close it and goto town.

I took mine apart and sanded it using 180 grit paper. It took awhile to get all the crevices scratched up then I cleaned it with contact cleaner. I sprayed it with KRYLON FUSION (4 light coats) I let each coat dry for about an hour, the last coat over night. Then 2 coats of KRYLON crystal clear gloss. Let that dry 2 days. Letting it dry is the most important part.

I thought of buying another bezel and doing this with some nice plastic paint. clean bondo job. Most people fubar bondo!
I polished the kick stand. I actually just chipped all the clear coat off with my thumb nail for the most part then used a dremel with polish disk to make it really flashy
I have been getting a ton of emails about people wanting me to do this to their phones.
I just don't feel comfortable with people shipping me their 300 dollar phones and taking them apart.
That being said, I can give you all a few tips on how to do this yourself. First off I used a glue called doctor bond it, it was a two part glue. Overall it seemed to work good. I put the phone back together once and it was all good to go, but I took the phone back apart to fix the glass and putting it back together the crack re opened. I wouldn't suggest repairing the crack if you have one ( which a lot of thunderbolts seem to develop a crack at this exact spot. You can get a replacement housing for 24.99 on ebay.
if you want to repaint your case, I would suggest using dupilcolor's automotive spray paint. Krylon Fusion is just too soft imho. It is designed for parts that need to be able to flex a lot, which even with this being plastic, it doesn't really need to flex.
Masking this was also a PAIN, mainly the kick stand area... Take your time with a straight razor and green masking tape. Lightly scuff the housing with 800 grit sandpaper and wipe down with wax and grease remover or acetone to remove all oils. Make sure you're wearing latex gloves at this point to not re contaminate your substrate. I used dental floss and a coat hanger to hang the phone housing and paint it.
I would say at least 2 light coats with 30 mins flash time between them, then a final wet coat and let dry over night and through the next work day. Then shoot it with a few coats of clear. ( make sure you use the same brand of clear and paint from the same line ) After you've cleared the phone and let it dry over night again, you could take some fine cut rubbing compound and buff it by hand, but it shouldn't be necessary.
The important thing really is just knowing how to pace yourself and let the thing DRY. if you get a run in the paint don't freak out, just let it dry and take some 1200 grit and wet sand it out.
I couldn't get krylons fusion to not feel sticky, granted I didn't use their clear over the paint. Also with the fusion I could not get good coverage as I had a few different colors, the black, stock grey and bondo color. A primer would have been ideal but I don't believe krylon has a primer.

I bought the ballistic BC case and I love it. Except for the screen protector. It got scratched and really blurry and it really ruined the amazing quality of the infuses screen. So I applied a regular screen protector (pack of three from Walmart for 10 bucks) and popped out the built in case protector easily by pushing on the edges and then put the case back on and now I must say that I am back to liking the case. And I am most likley going to dremel off the little Red bar behind the camera because it gives my pictures a red tint to it. I was skeptical at first but now its all good.
(Edit)Does anyone else get this when they take a picture with flash?

so why do you even want a screen protector? The glass is scratch resistant and off course the screen looks so much better without it.

Because scratch resistant doesn't mean it will never get scratched. Even with just light use there are ever so slight scratch marks near the top of my phone.

heres a link where u can buy it for like half the price

I have the same case and I removed the built in protector not long after getting it. It just takes away from the beauty of the screen.
Are there any good ones that don't take away from the luxury of the nice screen?
I have that same case.. I love the belt clip holder. And no. I don't have that problem. And I take a good amount of pictures. I hope that dremel fixes your problems.
And as you said.. those Walmart screen protectors worked fine? There's not any give on the front part that clips in? It seems like there would be more than usual because it is a lot thinner of a protector? (for everyone that doesn't have one it's a fairly sheet thick of pllastic)
And if you are coming here thinking of getting one, I will share my experiences with you. The case is made up of a hard plastic that is a .... well let's just say it's really hard to take off. Not impossible but especially that first time. This makes battery pulls harder. Sometimes you can get around it by killing the phone by holding the power for 6 or so seconds and then hitting the volume keys at the right time but it doesn't always work. The outer layer that comes on the case is nice and bulky. If you think that you will be sticking it in your pocket with this layer you got another thing coming. It's a very sticky plastic which makes it very hard to pull out of a pocket. It works very well with the case holder though. A rather obnoxious thing is there is slits around the base layer that the case slides into. The top two and the bottom two tend to come undone very easily. They always seem to slide out which is annoying. It's doesn't exactly make it feel like the case is going to come off but annoying. The only way that you can keep it in your pocket is if you don't have that layer on which decreases the protection. It feels VERY solid when you have the extra layer on and rather secure when you don't. It's also a little rough on the hands around the edges so if you have soft girly hands then you might want to looks else wards towards a pretty smooth case. But if you are a man and work in something tough or just aren't sure where you will drop it, this is the case for you. (Have never used otterbox..). But that is NOT to say that this case is by any means perfect. I had this problem where it felt like the vibration inside the case was going to rattle the phone to pieces.. that was kind of unnerving but I got used to it after a while. Then when on vacation I hopped onto a hotel bed, my right hip landing on the bed and the hip belt holder BROKE! I wasn't very happy because I was busy and couldn't go to ATT but it would no longer hold my phone. After all these problems I took it back to ATT where they quickly traded out the case for a new one.. I had my receipt of course.. I THINK they used it? Not positive. I have had this new case for 2 or so month have jumped onto my own bed and haven't broken it. It's also worth mentioning that at ATT they mentioned something about a one-time exchange policy. one coworker to another which means I can't break it again within my one year time frame. D: This is a bummer because I went through 3 ipod touches in one year. Let's say I realized just how much water was in my life... And finally if you are still reading this thanks, I didn't mean to make it so lengthy. In conclusion, it's a good case, pricy but protects it well. It's dropped a few times and I haven't really thought twice, because it's "designed to survive life".. just don't jump on a hotel bed.

Have a laugh, continue with your day
Decided to make something for in-between as my cover needs to come from China, going to take a few weeks.
Remember if you see someone talking to a cardboard box, it doesn't have to be someone mental imitating talking on the phone!
Love it!

Thanks
I was just jokingly advocating its environmentalist status to a girl, who was rather pinned and asked "How is it any green?"*
I replied to her I was still looking for the right crayon
* ("if you make something for in the meantime while you're awaiting a shipment from China" is probably what she meant)
Hahah good one!
Kind of reminds me of the hands-free headset that has no wires or batteries..
The case makes it look like a Nexus S!
As someone asked on reddit for a tutorial, ill copy it here. Not much you cant figure out yourself.
My case consists of 7 layers of cardboard. Depending on the thickness it may be more or less with others.
1. Take the nexus 4 box. Cut out a few rectangles as big as the box is. (7 was enough for me).
2. In the inside of the nexus 4 box, take the 'tray' out where your nexus4 used to lay in. Fold it open and trace the shape onto a few cardboard pieces. This is going to be your 'bumper' section. You need as much layers as your phone is thick (9.1mm). The shape doesn't need to be perfect, rather cut away too less than too much.
3. Glue them together. It doesn't matter if the hole doesn't match op perfectly.
4. Take a dremel, a drill or any other rotary tool and a sandpaper head. Now sand the hole of the bunper together into the perfect shape. You can use sandpaper and do it by hand if you don't have any tools available.
5. Trace out another piece of cardboard, but this time cut the hole smaller. I just kept the sides by default and took a thumb of thickness extra on the top and bottom. This is your face plate. Pierce two holes on the top where your camera is and proximity sensor.
6. Put the bumper around your phone and mark the sections you want to cut out. Vokume rocker, on-off button, micro usb and the 3.5mm jack.
7. Cut your bumper to pieces and glue it onto your faceplate. Dremel or sand where necessary.
8. Now for the back part: I took two pieces of cardboard. And traced my public transport card on the top of one. Carefully cut out only the top layer if the cardboard and remove the 'waves' or 'ripples' inside.
9. Make an opening in the center of the hole around a fingernail long. This is how you slide the card out.
10. Glue the intact back piece and the card holder piece together so you card will be sandwiched in between.
11. Now you can simply glue them together with your phone inside, or if you want to get it out and leave the box intact, you can make an interlocking mechanism. You can also pierce the corners with a large pick (twist! Don't push, as that ruins your box) or small drill and use some fishing line or hennep strand..gift ribbon even works, to close it up.
finish everything up by sanding or dremelling the sides so they are all correctly aligned and every piece is the same size. You can round your corners too if you wish.
someone do a review on this, looks interesting

I actually have quite a lot of faith it would work in a droptest from 1 meter high in a cornerdrop (or even flatfaced). If someone wants to sponsor me :3
Send this to MKBHD!
I notice how the layers seperate with the use D:, plastered the sides full of white wood glue now to keep it together.
Pray for me I did not accidentally put glue on my phone
So many reactions I get with my case . I currently also use this wallpaper, but I haven't found a really good one fitting the style.
Looks awesome !!

Similar to yours but live

Unfortunately, live wallpapers kill the battery very quickly.
Yesterday I was laughed at it for the first time by a girl with a white Iphone.
Btw, changed the design a bit. By removing the little connections of the openings on the buttons on the faceplate, I have a folding line , so now I can take my phone out.
Better copyright that design before Otterbox steals it

After a month of use I figured I should update how it went on in use. Got my chinese normal business leather case now, so little use for this any more.
(Really, thumbnails don't work on XDA? :/)
But ye. In terms of design, I can take my phone in and out by removing the two connections and create a folding line. In terms of sturdyness: The cardboard disintegrates into ruffles after a while, and ye, made me to just glue the entire thing. It's a semi-TPU case now. (But it made it a lot more solid). The top bit of the face plate came off. Didn't really bother putting it back on, the phone was enclosed enough and just glued over the rest.
