Rubber Battery Doors? - G2 and Desire Z Accessories

So after having my G2 for a few months now, my one small problem is the battery door. Honestly, it's very nice, at first, but now mine is all scratched up and ugly
So I'm wondering if there's any battery doors that's not a cover, as in you put over your original one, but has a soft texture like the rest of the G2.
Something like this
Like this
I've been looking, but it doesn't look like there's anything of that sort :/
would be nice if it also matched with the G2, I wonder why no one has made something like this.

One of the things I tried out was buying a small piece of carbon fiber sample off of eBay for a few bucks. Goes on like a sticker and you can cut it to shape with a x-acto knife. Also comes off clean which is nice. I also noticed a small increase in grip on the back of the phone. Defiantly a "Under 5 bucks" beautiful mod.

Try using something like the Zagg Invisible Shield, Body Guardz, etc. The film is clear and offers a slight rubber texture.

+1 for ZAGG, the skin works a treat on my Z, even if a little tricky to fit

I wrapped mine with carbon fiber vinyl. I bought a huge roll of the stuff for like $15 bucks and have been wrapping everything from the back of my iPad to parts on my motorcycle and I still have a crazy amount left. I'll have to take a picture of it on the back of my phone with another camera. Or maybe just go find a mirror somewhere...
edit: Well, you get the idea. There is really ****ty light in the bathroom in this office. Better than the scratched up aluminum piece that was there before. I liked how it looked, but I got a couple scratches in it that I didn't appreciate, so covering it seemed like a good idea.

Just completed the 3M carbon vinyl mod:
Would definitely recommend others to do something similar, better grip and no scratching on the cover.

Or... you could just get the whole carbon fiber skin and not have to cut anything yourself.
http://phantomskinz.com/htcdesirezchromatics.aspx
It's a bit pricey at $30, but much easier and it'll fit the whole phone, not just the battery door.

What if I don't want to cover the entire phone? Or I happen to have some vinyl lying around? And its fun to DIY
The application that skin can still be messed up by the average user unless you want to risk shipping to them and be without the phone for god knows how long.

anyone use one of these before?? i like having a "black" phone.. even thou my g2 is sexy.. im diggin the full carbon fiber.

Meh... When my clear coat started to come off I went to the store and bought some 800 and 1000 grit sand paper. Rubbed away with the 800 using hot water and took all of the clear coating off, then moved to 1000 grit where rubbed some more then added a bit of hand soap and kept rubbing. The battery cover has a nice shiny brushed looking finish now.

True, but not all like DIY things. I could see skins like this getting big, a lot easier to just ship and apply some skins than have to buy vinyl, cut, fit, etc.

Anyways, I might try and snag a Zagg for my Z, considering I work at best buy and get them dirt cheap. I just don't want to put any more money into this phone when I'm most likely getting a Sensation.

Do you have any pics? I would love to see what that looks like.

Another good thing about applying the vinyl to just the cover is that it raises the thickness slightly to match the silver camera surround so that when you put the phone on a flat surface its less likely to scratch the surround bit.

This reminds me of the time when faceplates for cell phones were popular 10 years ago. If I could make my G2 more like the G1 in feel, I would.

Case or No Case?

I'll have my Nexus tomorrow. Just wondering, is the teflon coating on this thing pretty solid, or is it a good idea to get a protective case for it? I'm VERY careful with my phones. I never used a case with my MyTouch3G or my G1, and they stayed in great shape with only a few very minor scratches here and there. But if anything happened to my Nexus, I'm sure I'd be pretty pissed at myself. So... input? Thanks?

I didn't use a case for about a month, only used the sleeve. Dropped it on my mat on my rug for my computer chair several times. No marks at all. I bought a Ghost Armor body kit just in-case.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpGAW6L5x8U
the coating seems pretty tough to me,
personally i use the sleeve it came with during pocket transportation
and from what i heard the screen can be easily scratched by aluminum, so i would avoid any situation that would cause that to rub your screen
I use the crystal gel case, its very thin an unobtrusive. I'd say go with a case and even a screen shield; better safe than sorry. Besides, when Windows Phone 7 or something else from Google comes out, you want to keep that resale value up!
Trust me... you'll be just fine with the included neoprene sleeve. What's the point of having such a svelte phone if you encumber it with a case?

If you drop it on concrete then it will scratch the case. You don't have to have a gigantic case. Just something to cover the actual phone.
I have a BSE and it's amazing.
It is made of a silicone type material that gives it a little rubbery feel [not a lot at all, just a little bit].
It makes it less vulnerable to scratches and damage to the actual phone.
It gives the phone a small bit of grip so it's not so easily dropped.
It gives it a glossy look.
It covers every inch of the phone including the screen.
It's crystal clear and doesn't get as many smudges as the normal screen.
Here's a great review on it
The only problems I had was at first it looks a little hazy but the skin just has to sit for a little while then it will look great.
And applying the skin is very tedious and takes about 30 minutes to do it right. If you do it wrong it will have bubbles and wont sit right.
Here's some pics of mine

I say get a skin as I find the phone to be too slippery without one. I have gotten used to it but I don't trust other people to use it without a skin.
@dumbestcrayon
nice skin, makes the phone look oh so sexxyy..
p.s. Glassjaw is AMAZINGG
I dropped my n1 on concrete and the scratch was enough to make me consider selling it! [I know, issues...] So now I use the stock case but get sick of taking it out all the time, its fine in the pocket without protection

Oh yeah I love it. One of the only physical flaws, IMO, was that the body isn't glossy. Now its better.
Glassjaw is pretty good. Haven't heard them in a long while. They came up on last.fm.
I would say no, but that is a pretty tasteful case posted in the forum. If you are on the fence, I say go for it. the phone is very durable, but it was a bit slick in the hands at first.
I'm all for the bse. Wish I put one on my g1
I use the Seidio belt clip case mostly for transport protection. But it's easy to remove the Nexus for use anytime as is!

I have a belt clip also. I just like the BSE because it has no flaws. It makes the phone glossy, a little grip, protects it from any scratches because it covers 99.9% of the phone [where the .1% is the tiny lines between where the pieces of the skin comes together XD]
And, it was $8. So it's 100% win for me.

Yeah, I had it for my MyTouch. When I ordered my N1 I expected to have to throw it out. It's a good quality clip that I got from some website. I forgot where. My cousin got his N1 before me so I tried his and it fit perfect. I was pretty happy about it. IT was a little bit tight at first but it stretched out a bit. It has an open spot right where the headphone jack is too. But as of today I got my Rockfish BT headset so I wont need that anymore
This headset is amazing...A2DP is great.
dumbestcrayon, have you had any experience with the Invisible Shield?
I currently have the Invisible Shield on my phone without any complaints, just wondering if you had a comparison.
Price-wise, mine was more expensive at what, 25 bucks i think, but albeit with free lifetime replacement. Dunno about performance though...

I can't make out however, if the full body skin also covers the edge (open slit) of the screen to prevent any dust/lint from getting inside it and further into the screen.
Can you confirm please?

Screen protector - bargin!!! - Large pictures inside!!!

I bought this the other day:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/FoneM8-Desi...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1273093982&sr=1-14
Got it today and I can report it is a bargin! only slightly reduces the sensitivity of the screen, which I actually like! Fit is good and you get 5 of them for <£2. The seller is doing themselves an injustice.
Oh and put it on with the peel off tab at the top. It fits the other way around (as I found out) but its meant to be at the top.
JAmes.
Re: Screen protector - bargin!!!
do they completely cover the screen?
Ordered last night. will give em a try when they come. the ones i ordered before are rubbish.
Ordered a pack @ £2 one cant complain Will add to this thread when they arrive
Yup total coverage.
I'm gonna buy another pack before the seller bumps up the price.
Can get pictures if wanted?
JAmes.
I recently ordered this screen protector from eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/x2-LCD-Screen...ries_MobilePhoneBatteries?hash=item2559ea1f8e
It literally took only two days to arrive from US and its one of the best full screen coverage protectors I have every used, well impressed. Only £2.00 (including postage) and you receive two screen protectors.
After applying, I have not noticed any adverse affects on the touch screen; if anything, it actually feels better/smoother, with no trapped air bubbles or dust underneath the screen.
Note: lucky i was sent two protectors, I messed up applying the first one because it caught some dust particles in the air if you order this, make sure you apply in a dust free room!
why do you need one when it has a glass screen?
Try and scratch your screen and when you don't manage to and provide evidence I'll remove my protector

Please do - pictures would be great. Can you take one of an unused screen protector too?
How is it applied? With a liquid solution or strips on top/bottom that has to be pulled?
Yo! Pictures aren't perfect I'm afraid and I had to use the flash and I forgot to clean my grubby paw prints off
You get 5 in the pack + a big general one you can use for something else.... dunno what
I've not applied this one perfectly, its slightly mis-alligned at the bottom left which has a knock on effect at the top, but its only off by about 0.5mm so I'm gonna wait until it annoys me too much before I use up another. I've tried to show it in the pics. If it were perfectly alligned it would take a really trained eye to spot it.

It looks nice.
Is it clear or matte?
It looks a lot like one I had from DC Mugen for my Samsung i780 and uses the same method of applying it.
I put an InvisibleShield on my Desire a few days ago. Very nice protector, but I hate applying the InvisibleShield because it always seem to get screwed up.
The "peel" method is much easyer as the whole protector isn't exposed while applying.
Its clear. The picture was taken on top of my mousemat which is frosted glass so might be making it look a little matted. Its also still got the protector covers on which makes it not as clear. Oh and my paw prints are all over the phone when I took the pics.
They are a little tricky to fit, but you get 5 of them for £2 and you can take them off and put them back on, although its difficult not to get it dirty when doing so. Actually I've just read the instructions on how to fit it.... opps I pulled the whole protector off and then fitted it. Oh well I've got 3 left to try
JAmes.
PS. If I remember I'll get some pics in sunlight tomorrow.
Some indoor pictures (like previously posted) but the the screen turned on would also be appreciated if that is not too much to ask.
it looks like the PDAir protector but you only get one of them and I already made it dirty.
Plus could not get the air bubbles out.

lol... never thought of scotch tape! maybe you could try it in your bathroom after you have a bath as the steam will remove the dust particles from the air.
I bought some of these from eBay last week and have to say its a brilliant buy. under £2 for 5 is a bargain. I have passed one of my spares to a mate. Perfect fit on screen and no noticeable reduction in sensitivity. Just make sure you give the screen a good wipe with the cloth provided beforehand and you should be fine. No air bubbles and after over a week of use I have nothing bad to say about it.

Most protectors you can wash under the tap and 'apply wet' to the screen. I've done this a few times with various devices if you dont get it right the time/ get a spec of dust underneath etc. You simply squeegee out the water with a credit card (or similar) with a thin material wrapped around it to avoid scratches. Very much like window tints.

Do you use protection or do you go bare? Cases and screen protectors, you pervs...

I bought a gel skin and a screen protector at T-mobile in the mall today. Already took them both off because they made the phone look and feel like **** in my hand. Honestly, it felt like the same dimensions as an iPhone. Yuck.
I know I'm gonna drop it eventually, but it looks even ****tier in the case than it would with scratches, so **** it. This is such a sexy phone I just want to look at it all the time.
What's everyone else doing?
I have the red one... dude I couldn't stand to hold my phone for even 5 minutes without a case lol maybe I'm going through my babying phase but if I gotta be with this for next 2 years then I gotta keep it lookin new at all times. It's just too slick to me without a case imo

I can't stand a case either...I also can't stand the screen protector that they cut for the mt4g, cuz it is reduced glare and it seems you take away from the beautiful display. I use a leather holster that works well cuz usually when I drop my phone its usually cuz if falls out of my pocket....only draw back is its leaving black residue on my red finished part...

still nekkid. I'm just using the G1 sleeve. It fits the MT4G perfectly.
Bare back all the way, I would rather pay for an Insurance replacement If I dropped or scratched the display. But I will not cover its natural beauty with plastic or rubber.
Coming from a Vibrant I realize that my only downgrade is the display, Everything else is an upgrade, So why would I further reduce this display with plastic or rubber. I keep one pocket empty at all times, the only thing I use this pocket for is my MT4G.

Nothing all the way around. That said, I'd like to try a clear "protector" for the battery plate so as to make it a little grippier. I had one for my iphone 3g, which helped immensely. Anyone know of one that might fit the battery plate?

Agreed! The screen protector they gave me sucks. For iphones they have screen protectors that cover the entire front of the device, right? That's more what I had in mind.
Something similar for the rear isn't a bad idea.

Yeah, peace of mind is why I bought it. It also feels clunky and bulky in the hand with the case on. Yuck.
The only protection I would consider for my phone is maybe a thin screen protector, or maybe a Golden Shellback coating to make it waterproof.
no case because it makes the phone too bulky. i do use a realook screen protector though, cant even tell its on there.
I've got the white hardshell with the thin rubber sleeve case on mine. It came with a screen protector that I've managed to scratch the heck out of somehow. It's a nice case and doesn't add much bulk to the phone. Generally I like to use the phone without a case but from past experience with rubber coating on plastic (Blackberry Bold) rubbing off, I opted for a case.

[Guide] Carbon fiber vinyl battery door, with lots of pics

After seeing a few posts (by ocdetails and desirez_pete) I wanted to try the mod myself. Thanks to their advice, I was able to do it pretty easily in one sitting. During the process I decided to take pictures just for the sake of having some kind of record, and since I didn't see any picture-filled guide on how to do this in our forum I thought I'd provide one to help those who might have been intimidated at the thought of this DIY. It's really quite easy!
I ordered a 1' x 6" sheet of "Black M500 3D Carbon Fiber Vinyl Stripe Wrap Sheet 6in" from an eBay seller named metrorestyling. It's basically a knock-off of 3M's DI-NOC carbon fiber vinyl. This sheet is enough material to do this mod for 6 battery doors.
I started by putting one edge of the battery door along one edge of a piece of paper, then outlining the rest. Next I taped the paper on the vinyl such that the straight edge of the paper was aligned with the carbon fiber weave.

A razor will cut the vinyl very easily. I then took off the back side of the carbon fiber vinyl, laying it sticky side up. I aligned one edge of the battery door with one edge of the vinyl and applied it starting from that side (like applying a screen protector).
It was already on really smoothly but I used heat from a hair dryer set to medium to smoothen as much as possible. One quote I read online was, "If the heat is to [sic] hot for your hands, then it’s hot enough for the vinyl."
Now this is where I should have done something better. With the excess vinyl not stuck onto the back of the batter door I immediately started cutting. I first cut it while trying to stay parallel to the battery door plane, so I can cut off excess later if necessary. While cutting I noticed it was better to cut with inward strokes, e.g., in the picture below I would move the knife down and left to avoid pulling the vinyl away from the battery door edge.
What I should have done is wrap the excess around while applying heat, followed by immediate cooling to "set" the vinyl in place around the edges. This unset vinyl along the edges gave me a little trouble later
This is what it looked like after a very, very rough cut.
This is where I realized my mistake above. I had to constantly reheat the edges to get good adhesion to the battery door edge, followed by immediate cutting. And since the adhesive film was unset, it kept accumulating on my knife, making it dull every so often
Side view:
To cut more vinyl off along the edges, I cut at an angle.
Preliminary fit was too tight, and the battery door wasn't fully pressed down. Also, my cutting was VERY sloppy on the speakerphone hole
So, I cut more.
It fit much better along all edges
And that's all there is to it! I hope this helps those who want to do this mod.
Looks good! I suggest you re-apply it a few more times and you should be able to get it perfect.
And another thing I forgot to tell you was try to stretch the vinyl over the edges while heating it to get the best adhesion but don't stretch it so that it distorts the carbon pattern. My application is still fully stuck on after 2 months
very nice!
looks good man. I'm think about doing something like it!
Thanks for this. I just bought the same sheet you bought. Hopefully it will arrive this week.
looks good, I am going to give this a try!
I did this the other day using your guide. I screwed up a little bit on the flat side by cutting off too much, so some of the door is showing, but overall I'm happy with it.

From what I've been told, the stuff comes right off when heated and residue can be removed with typical residue removal solution. If you bought the same sheet as me, you know how much more there is to use in case you want to retry it

You definitely want to try a few more applications to get it right

Eh I had to waste one piece of it because I made it a little bit too small, so I think I'll just deal with it for now.

Thanks for the tut. I used it and it came out good. Though it looks a bit sloppy as i cut a bit too inwards and the speaker hole came out very sloppy. Im happy with it now i know what i did wrong. Thanks!

Really nice work you have there. Does that carbon fiber give it a better feel? Or not make it so slick in your palm?
Actually after using the phone with the vinyl for 3 months I found it makes grip worse. I'm thinking of adding a layer of plastidip over it for better grip.

I like it very much. First cut btw

[REVIEW] Rugged Armor Case - Love Mei: Powerful

I arrived at work this morning and I'd received a new case for my Galaxy Note 4 to review! Happy days!
I'm currently dissecting it now and will update this thread later today, but first impressions.... this thing is BIG!
I've personally never seen anything with such heavy duty protection for the Note series, that's not to say they're aren't others, it's just a new one on me.
If you're scared of damaging your device, then this robust looking thing may be right up your street.
More to follow shortly while I put this thing thru it's paces.

PACKAGING:
The packaging is pretty decent to be fair, and definitely has a premium feel to it.
THE CASE:
Straight out of the packaging, this is what you get, they've included an Alan Key, to actually get into the thing which I think is good of them.
I've had "screw in" cases before, where you end up having to search around in the spider invested drawers of your garage just to get a key or screwdriver small enough to fit these things, so definitely a positive on that front.
Open up the case here is what you get inside:
Two Lanyards
An alcohol wipe
Cloth
Spare screws
And a second Alan Key
It's simply a case of unscrewing the screws and dropping your phone in
The inside part where the phone sits is rubber, with parts of it made into a honeycomb mesh, I'd say there's about 1CM of the stuff that separates the phone from the outside world once fitted.
The other materials used are aluminum for the front and back plate and it also has it's own glass protector which states to be Gorilla Glass, I can't confirm or disprove this but it's definitely glass.
The glass itself is clear and does not impair viewing and because the glass is attached to the case and not adhered to the screen, you do not get the "halo effect" associated with the current tempered glass protectors currently on the market.
Once installed get ready to start weight lifting, the whole thing together is "HEAVY", most definitely not something you'd want to stick in the top pocket of your shirt.
The only part not covered by this case is the rear camera, but is protected to a degree, as it's set back from the surface of the case.
Because the whole phone is enclosed, you have some raised capacitive buttons, to use instead of touching the phone itself, they work really well as does the responsiveness of the screen and the S-Pen on that screen, the S-Pen doesn't work with the capacitive buttons though, not a big deal but it's something to be aware of.
The ports for the Pen, USB and headphone socket are all covered by a cap of some description, the case states to be "Weather Proof" and I think it most definitely is, everything seems to lock together well, but it's not raining here (for once) so can't test this right now.
On a side note, I'm happy to report that all the cutouts for the ports and sensors are precise, everything I can see so far makes me have a feeling they've took care in creating this case.
The back of the case has a raised rubber backing, giving it some friction to stop it sliding around.
It's not as "grippy" to my bare fingertips though.
CONCLUSION:
This case in my opinion is great for those who do a lot of outdoor activities, or work in outdoor conditions and want to protect their device the best they can, this really does feel rugged and up to the challenge, in stopping rain and dust getting to your Note 4.
I personally would use, but only when I'm going to the beach or out camping/walking in the countryside with the family, not as my daily protection, for the adventurers out there, this is thing will be a great investment.
For the average person like myself, it's just two heavy and adds a substantial amount girth to the size of the Note 4 to use full time.
My everyday protection comes in the form of a Spigen Neo Hybrid, which in itself isn't exactly slender, but providing Love Mei don't ask for it back
I'll use the Powerful when I know I'm going to be going somewhere that phones are "allergic to" as this thing feels bomb proof.
Cheapest place I could find to get this was direct from them http://www.lovemeicases.com/love-mei-powerful-bumper-for-galaxy-note-4/ at $49.99
I like he case, but the branding on the front is the big turn off for me.
Wow that bulk! Guess you'll be happy it's safe I guess

I know, mental ain't it! you need to have big hands to handle this with one hand, I'm 6.1" have sizeable hands and can just manage to handle it.
These cases were originally copied from a company called Lunatik.
Lunatik really dropped the ball making anything outside of the iPhone only cases.
That Note 4 version sure looks huge. Makes the Defender look slim.
A kickstand would have been nice. If it had a holster I'd buy it. I particularly like the glass protection screen considering there isn't a glass protector that fits properly w/o a halo available and I like the water resistant feature. Did you test it making calls and know your voice doesn't sound muffled?
From a bulk standpoint it doesn't look any bulkier than any other highly protective case like the Defender for example.
I see where others are talking about seeing the case, but I don't see any pictures that are posted. Were they taken down?

Just when I thought I'd covered everything.... [emoji12]
I'll check on that today, reception wise, I didn't see any changes but didn't check GPS etc, so I'll check that too.
All the rugged cases look ugly.
Why isn't there a more girly one, that doesn't look like a fat robot?

We only get the black and glacier in the UK. It's a bit of pain to order from the US because I always end up paying custom fees and the case itself is pricey already. And then I don't want to buy from a reseller because I am not aware of any reputable ones. You never know whether it will be genuine. I bought one for my S4 and it was a really bad clone. Oh well!

It wouldn't maintain it's looks if you worked on a building site and dropped it on concrete [emoji12]
I always put a rugged case on my new phones for a couple of months. By then I have my eye on something new. Then I take off the bulky case and enjoy the phone for a while before I sell it.
Thanks for the detail review, firstly I'm hanging on between love mei case and lunatik takkit, now I will go for love mei to have my N4 under extreme protection....
This case seems solid on protection,no other cases will have a better performance on guard...
