[Q] Transformer Getting HOT - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am so fed up with this tab. Almost drop kicked it today. I put in the microsd for my evo 3d in the tab to listen to music. Came back roughly 10 min later and picked it up by the right side and dropped it onto the bed. It was SOO hot it left blisters on my palm! So I got the micro out and surprisingly it wasn't melted in HOWEVER all data on it was gone. So I put in a different micro and within 10 seconds it was too hot to touch. Then I went and bought a new microsd and same thing. How do I get them to cross ship me one? Can I just get my money back from them? Bought it from a guy on ebay and it was doa so I sent it in and it came back with a replacement screen with a 1x2mm black speck between the screen and glass (have separate thread about that) I am ready to get a different tab. Suggestions? when this comes back from rma it is going on ebay

Or you could RMA it again.
If you do sell it on eBay I hope you disclose these issues. It would be dishonest to unload this on another unsuspecting person and make it their issues.

Hmm ... It is likely that the unit you purchased was in fact defective.
But what's the batch number on it?

Thats very awkward.. first time I hear the microsd burning.
Was it being charged at the same time?
Could be a defect on charger or the 40 pin port?

Very bizarre... I always have my 4GB Micro-SD plugged in. When I play music or anything off it, it never gets hot at all. RMA it, and hopefully it will get fixed.

Hmmm, I should check this since I've yet to really use the microsd slot past the initial check..

Only gets kind of warm when I watch videos. Never gets warm at all when I listen to music. Never tried listening to music stored on microad but I don't think it'll be any different.
Sent from my Transformer TF101

blisters...huh....i've touched a red hot cpu and never even got blisters. Must have been glowing red.

Yeah, I've never gotten blisters either. Hmm. My transformer gets hot when I do something like stream movies or whatnot, but hot like warmer, not hot like scalding.

I have a my micro sd card int here listen music off it on a daily basis. never has it gotten hot.

never had a heat issue, only gets the usual warmth from charging thats normal with all devices

Sounds like a defect TF Could you test what kind of temp you are getting with SetCPU? I have a micro card and all my music is all it and I listen to it every day, and never had a heat issue.

I only feel heat or warmth when I'm transfering files or charging. Sometimes when I have been playing a game for an hour or 2 straight. But it's just warm, not blistering hot. Matter of fact, wouldn't the plastic backing of the TF melt before that?
Could it be that the cpu has a faulty heatsink/no thermal gel? or maybe it wasn't ventilating properly? Did you have it on a thick blanket or anything similar?
I still can't warp my head around "getting blisters" from it. I had a panini maker smash my hand when I was 5. It wasn't able to pull it off for probably 20 seconds, and no blisters. It would have to be extremely hot, and the device would've shut it self off. Oh and the SD card falling out? Probably didn't push it in enough. I use the screwdriver haed on my pocket knife to push it in and out. (Probably not the smartest idea, but I have clumsy fingers.

I think I transfer more heat from my hands than the device to me.
In another word, it doesn't get hot at all. My laptop on the other hand...

Ok its a batch 4 I believe. It is blistered I can post pics if that gets it solved quicker. The plastic doesn't appear to be melted but it smells like it is on that side. and I would sell it only after it comes back from rma. I have perfect feedback and would like it to stay perfect plus I'm not a dishonest person.

Same
Just experienced the same thing with my microsd in. I've had it in for atleast 2 months now and never expeirenced it before. All I did was having it inside the sd slot. Not charging/gaming or anything.
Once I pulled out the sd card it got cooled down. Didnt get scalded or anything, but i guess it could have gotten that hot if I didnt pull out the sd card.

Is this thing supposed to get burning hot?

Like, even just using it as a phone, it heats up. Is this normal?
I get the same thing, it gets really really really hot. When I use it as gps, or go online especially.
yeah, its normal. never heard of it not happening
I cooked breakfast on mine this morning.
I put mine in my pocket... made myself sterile.

I've got a Fuze and it was white hot too. I took it back after about a week and just got a replacement. This new one is not heating up. Although now the problem I have with this one is the 3G connection is not as strong as it was before AND google maps doesn't work for sh!t!! I'm looking for a fix.
Marc
Sounds like your 3G isn't really connecting, make sure you try all the forum posts on enabling and forcing 3G/HSDPA connections. Whenever I run mine on 3G it becomes a nice little hand warmer. Force it down to GPRS and it's not hot and has a useless data connection (but good for when the battery is almost dead).

Normal? Extreme heat in an electronic device is normal? I don't think so. If any device you have is getting warm enough to be of concern TAKE IT BACK AND EXCHANGE IT!
BTW - mine doesn't get hot. I can feel warmth if it's charging, for instance, but I wouldn't call it hot.

Pretty much yes they do especially when using heavy power draining functions ie: Wifi, GPS, etc.
Some of the claims here of cooking breakfast, becoming sterile maybe slightly over the top and I have never been actually burnt by the device. But I have yet to use a HTC device that did not get hot when using the above functions for a period of time.
Just my experience and I certainly would not be using one if it boiled my nuts.
It´s not normal for a electonic device to become that hot, some heat is normal but not EXTREME HEAT!
Try flashing another radio and see if that helps, if not then you should send it back for repair!

mmmm, ever put something made of plastic near the heat exhaust vent on your laptop?? Most modern electronic devices that are based on a CPU generate exteme heat that is why they have cooling, heat sinks, etc.
I'm certainly not going to get into an argument about this but the bottom line here is that they do generate certain levels of heat. It definately should not be enough to burn you though.

Yes but a laptop has X amount more power then a phone! And you know, if the laptop didnt have a FAN to cool it down it would not last you even a few minutes!
However, our phones are designed without fans and are not supposed to get EXTREMLY HOT!
Let´s face it, no electronic device should get extremly hot, if it does then something is wrong, or something will be wrong with it soon!
Mine gets warm, but never hot even when using the GPS or wifi for over an hour. During a 20 minute telephone conversation it will get warm, but again not hot.
after 20 min of phone call, connected to wifi, on ac adapter, it got warm, never hot.
the hottest mine got was looking at vid porn via SkyFire browser. It looked really great... but oh man... the phone was sizzlin'.
Well I don't know if my phone is getting warm or hot. It's not an unpleasant warmth, just odd.
And Skyfire? I thought Opera Mobile was the preferred browser of choice.
My phone doesn't get extremely hot, mildly warm while surfing net over 3G, but that is it.

This is absolutely not normal and is one of the reasons i returned mine and went back to my Treo. I've used lots of high end phones and this is the first and only one that just starts toasting by itself when doing simple stuff.
Strange thing is that everyone i know with a T.P complains about the same thing. I could be watching Youtube for less than 5 mins and it starts boiling..what gives. I Youtube on my Treo (via Coreplayer) and it never gets hot.
I'd say this is a problem or issue with most of all T.Pro's. Sad really, such decent hardware specs.
I've also been experiencing heat coming from the back of the device, but only when I hold calls over around 15 minutes or if I'm using the internet extensively. I also notice it can create a good amount of heat when it charges. Usually when electronic devices have excessive heat it's due to a build up of dust.

So what am I to think? I have a few guys telling me NO! And the rest of you saying "It's normal" and ONE guy saying he exchanged his in and his new one DOES NOT GET HOT AT ALL!!!
what the hell!! I have like two weeks until my 30 days is up.

Touch Pro Combusted!!

I've had my Touch Pro from Verizon since February but then in the last week or so, my phone would randomly get hot to the touch until the battery is pulled. So today I set my phone in the kitchen on the charger and then went to the front room to play some Call of Duty on the Xbox. After an hour or so, I noticed that the house was a little smoky so I got up and went to check outside to see if a fire was happening because I had all the windows open but to my surprise, no fires outside. After I stepped back into my house, I noticed the haze was still there but there was also a weird stench in the house as well. Right when I walked into the kitchen, there it was, in a flamming pile of plastic and silicon melted into my kitchen countertop. So I non chalantley walked over, unplugged the charger and took my cup of 7up and doused the fire out. After that, called Verizon customer care up and after 30 minutes of what I might assumed to be eyebrow raises throughtout the call center, they agree to give me a new TP on the house. The only resistance I had was that they wanted me to bring in a chunk of the phone for inspections but the phone was so melted into the counter that I would have to pop the counter off and bring it into the retail store, not happening!!! Moral of the story, dont piss off the phone by not giving it proper graphics acceleration drivers when there is a dedicated chip onboard.
Wow!!!
It´s unveliebable!!
My condolences for your device or what´s left of
WOW!
Did you notice anything unusual before the combustion happened (Like the device getting exceptionally hot, etc)?

Battery Problem Really Corrupted µSD Card (I think...)

My unrooted Samsung Droid Charge was acting really squirly; rebooting, constantly scanning the media card, getting really hot, being a general PIA. I thought there was a problem with an application and found that if I was able to catch things at the right time, remove the µSD card so the applications couldn't access the network then I could usually get things working and put the µSD back and the Charge would work for a few days until it happened again.
So, after a couple of weeks and the problem possibly getting worse I take my Charge to a Verizon store (yeah, I know, what the hell was I thinking!!?) The first thing the petite girl tells me is the phone is out of warranty by twelve days. Then she tells me it has water damage (the red tattle tale is slightly activated). Now I was pretty sure about the latter (five minutes sitting in a half foot of river water was my clue), but the former was a bit off-putting. Nevertheless, I have a have a SquareTrade warranty so figure worst case is I send it to them along with $50 for a refurb replacement. Still, I want to see what the Verizon folks have to say.
The petite girl takes the phone to the service area and swaps out the battery. After ten minutes she comes back and tells my the problem with my phone is that the battery has been damaged by water and it needs to be replaced. I'm thinking of calling shenanigans on her but she has nice eyes. The petite girl says she's sorry but they don't have any batteries in stock but she can order one. I say thanks but no thanks and leave (nice eyes only go so far with me...)
When I get home I realize that the µSD card is named with some gibberish characters and I wonder if the thing is corrupted so it isn't being read properly. I swap the 32GB µSD card out for a 4GB (all I have lying around) and for the past couple of weeks the phone has only rebooted a couple of times, it isn't constantly scanning the media card, and the battery isn't getting crazy hot. It seems to be working okay.
Anybody have any thoughts on this situation?

SD Card Slot

Anyone else having issues with the mSd card slot?
Plug a card into mine and it makes a sound and works, knock the device or touch the card and it makes the unplugged sound and disappears..
Looking into the port the pins look like they are at a bit of an angle and the plastic slot moved a bit, a few of the screws weren't exactly tight so I gave them a quick tweak, the slot itself doesnt move anymore but the problem persists..
I've raised it with MS support and they are doing an advanced replacement but didnt know if anyone else had seen, had or heard of this before, I'd put it down to a build quality issue tbh..
Just hope they dont say its not covered as some of the screws have a bit of silver showing where I tweaked them, didnt take it to bits or anything depends how anal they are I guess...
Nope no issues.
I have seen a few people show images of obvious user damage they claim as magically appearing that Microsoft did returns on. You should be fine.
Had that same issue on mine; if I held the card in with my fingernail it would work fine, but as soon as I let go it would come out just enough that it would disconnect. Microsoft exchanged it no problem. My only issue was the support rep told me to send back all accessories, yet they only shipped me a lone Surface, with no charger! When I asked another support rep about it, they said that the accessories ship separately, which means I received my Surface overnight, but had to wait a week for the charger.
Yes, I had this issue on my previous surface. I got an exchange on it, as it randomly stopped booting a few weeks ago, and I haven't noticed it on my current one.
As long as I'm not the only one then, I did try a few different cards so knew it wasnt that, its not like I use the card much atm but its nice to have the extra space seeing as I dont have a bloody drop box app yet
Guy I live chated too at Surface support said just send the Surface back without any of the accessories, then rang me a few hours later as there was a problem on the system and then went through it on the phone, if only Samsung support were as good with this Slate 7 I have :/
Anyways replacement should be in the building shortly, it left the local UPS depot just before 6am, not sure how much use I'll get out of it tho as the charger is sat at home and I didnt even think about it until I saw the post above...
New device 50% power, that'll do, installing updates now, d'oh, battery will probably be dead by the time its done, it sbeen going for an hour and is installing 4 of 18...
Replacement sd card is a much better fit, doesn't wiggle in the slot at all and doesn't disconnect when you touch it..
However I might have a different problem now... :\
bump... anyway to fix this without an exchange? going back to school tomorrow and the closest MSoft store is 2 hours away (Tucson --> Scottsdale). The MSD is def loose and it constantly is disconnecting. pain in the ass when trying to listen to music.
my current solution is I stuck a tiny folded sheet of paper in between the msd and the tablet to try and hold it in place. so far so good, but its only been a few min...

I did mine on an advanced exchange so wasn't an issue for me, meant putting a holding charge on my card tho, not sure if that's an option..

[Q] My Z3 is bad. Was it bad luck and should I try again?

Hi,
I have a Xperia Z3 for a few months now. Software wise it's great, I really love it. But I have a series of very annoying hardware issues.
1) USB cable doesn't connect properly. Well, it does, but any movement breaks the connection. Touching the cable, even lightly, disconnects the USB. I lost a lot of time transferring files and accidentally pushing the cable, and it's super scary to install sensitive stuff via USB.
2) It gets really hot really fast. Playing simple games or browsing the internet for 5 minutes already makes it warm. Playing hardware intensive games for 20 minutes make the phone so hot that it's *really* uncomfortable to hold it. I can't play games outside because I can't stand holding the phone, and putting it in my pocket just makes my leg hot because the heat is spreading through my pants. Despite that, I never got a overheat warning. It happens with both stock and custom ROMs, so I don't think it's a software issue.
3) I got a small crack on my screen. I have absolutely no idea how it happened, but I don't think I was careless. Is the screen too fragile? I don't think so, this one is probably my fault , but might as well ask.
I'm asking all of this because these problems are really annoying me, and I want a new phone. I really love this software/spec-wise, so I'm thinking to get the same. But damn, if I buy another Z3 just to have the same issues I'll feel like the biggest idiot on the planet.
So, was it just a bad luck thing or should I go for another phone?
Thanks for reading.
Hi Hexenir
I've had my z3 for around 6 months now and think it's a great phone.
No. 1, have you maybe worn the USB port out by connecting lots and lots of times? (you mentioned you've used custom roms so I assume you've flashed more than the average user) Do you charge through that port too, thus increasing how many times you've used that port? I use a Magnector to charge so I only use the USB port to side load apps and mine is totally stable. I can move the phone around whilst it's connected and it doesn't break connection. Also, are you using the cable that came with the phone? Sometimes other brands can be sloppy fitting.
No 2, I can't really comment here because I don't play intensive games on mine. I have browsed reddit for easily a full hour and there might be a slight temperature increase but nothing I wouldn't expect. It's also sat in a case so I'd imagine it's harder for my phone to get rid of heat.
No 3, As I just said, I use a case so I've not got any cracks on mine (yet, touch wood) but I haven't ever dropped it either. I use a Roxfit case and I'm really happy with it. I always used to keep my other phones naked (no case) but the glass front and back made me feel paranoid about dropping it. There's also the issue that the z3 can slide if it's on a flat/smooth surface (mine slid on my bed duvet and I've heard they've slid across tables) so again, my case stops this.
These aren't cheap phones so at the end of the day it's your decision but if you do, I'd recommend a magnector and a case. Another thing I should mention, I switched to a magnector because I worried about wearing the water tight seal by opening it to charge every 3 or 4 days. Have you recently done a pressure test to see if you've worn that seal out?
The Z3 is a great phone, but ...
1)
USB - I usually use the magnetic port for charging and do most file transfers by wifi so the only usage of the USB port is for me flashing roms. Nothing happened yet but I guess this is something which can be fixed under warranty.
2)
My kids play Asphalt 8 on it and it does get warm but not hot. Before investigating further I would recommend doing a factory reset to see whether this resolves the issue. If not, warranty may help either.
3)
A pain in the ass and you are not the only one. Depending on your country you may have difficulties to get that repaired.
1- Bad USB? Have you tried using another cable and/or another computer to see whether the same problem persist? I highly doubt its software issue, wouldn’t harm to do a repair with Sony PC Companion. If you have tried all those mentioned above, I would assume it’s a defected phone, hardware issue.
2- I think its normal for the Z series, they do tend to get warm easily. I have the Z and now the Z3, both experienced the same thing. One thing is that heat disperse poorly on glass in compared to metal. This might be one reason why many OEMs do not use glass back anymore. I know its a shame, beauty or performance, your choice. However, i would say the Z3 disperse heat far better than the Z.
in addition to that, it also depends your location. Here in Vancouver, its mostly raining and windy, so heat isnt that bad in compared to Asia, Hong Kong/China etc.
Idle average CPU temp is 24 Celsius
Browsing average CPU temp is 30 Celsius - 40 Celsius
Playing games reaches 4x Celsius fast. I normally let it cool after reaching that high. Thus, i barely play games on the phone.
3- I do not believe that the Z3 has gorilla glass 3/4 so I wouldn’t bet on the glass is "tough." That said, I would advise you to put on a screen protector regardless of whether you like it or not. Trust me, a simple screen protector will hold the glass together. I had the Z before and dropped like x times and the screen didn’t crack at all. Dropped my Z3 few times and its still fine.
Well if I purchase a phone where the screen cracked randomly and have the issues u mentioned I would not buy it again.
With the screen crack Sony will refuse to repair it under warranty but u can still try.
I always have an insurance when I buy Smartphones. I paid 150€ and it covers everthing Sony will refuse to repair.
