you can't type in the commands yourself?

Can someone tell me how to use the terminal on my PC, it won't work on my Android.

to do it from your computer you need to have adb set up. there are hundreds of guides for that on xda.
what do you mean it "won't work" though? be more specific?

The last step in the command line, the renaming "su" to "mu." I can't rename it because it's a read only file.

I typed character for character correctly, still "failed on '/system/bin/su' - Read-only file system".

Didn't work for me sadly I still get the playback not supported. I'm on the T-Mobile G2x
Edit: Also tried unrooting via super one click and still got the same result after reboot.

well, it says potential. it doesn't say it will work. it's an idea.

Custom ROMs and Sprint Apps

I have a question, when custom ROMs are available and we flash them to our Hero does that mean we will lose the Sprint apps that came with our phone? If so is there a way to back them up and restore them on the new ROM? I am most concerned about the GPS app.
Can you just
adb pull /system/app/Sprint_Navigator.apk C:\
and then install that apk?

That would definitely work but there is no reason the apps should not be included. It's all up to the rom dev. But that would definitely work. That's how the Dream developers got the Sprint apps on the Dream.

This is what got Cyanogen in trouble and the C&D order. He was including Google licensed apps into his ROM.
Chances are custom ROM devs will not have the apps included for the same reasons.

Ok, so i have a Mac and everything seems to be working ok but when i do this:
96-26-56-112:tools brynehobbs$ ./adb pull /system/app/Sprint_NFL.apk desktop

There is nothing new on my desktop. I'm not too sure what the 'local' path should be though...

Im not quite sure how the folder structure is for Mac OS but since it is unix this command will work:
Code:
./adb pull /system/app/Sprint_NFL.apk .
The dot basically says extract it right here. You can then look in the directory where adb is located and the file should be there.

Yeah man. I was pretty psyched to have these apps (which personally, I like) on my Dream. The only complaint is the fantasy option in the NFL apk doesnt work on the Dream but then again, it currently does not work on my Hero so I dont know what gives there.

One small correction, it's "/system/app" (no plural s).
adb pull /system/app <wherever>
So i emailed my friend the Sprint_NFL.apk trough Gmail but when he tried to open it on his G1 he got: "there was a problem parsing the package"
Do i have to root his G1 and use adb to 'push' the file to the G1 for it to work properly?

Well it should work. I just checked the dream forum and the mods were forced to remove the links so you cant get them from there anymore either. I dont think root is necessary but maybe it is. I would try adb or make sure he has install apps from unknown sources checked in settings->applications.

Android symlink errors system/xbin/su PLEASE HELP

I have been trying to for over a week in the captivate forum to get ANYONE to try and help me and so far no one will. So i'm really hoping someone will take the time, i will PAY YOU UP FRONT over paypal to help me. I am DEAD SERIOUS.
Have a captivate, but this problem is not exclusive to this phone. This error has happened on just about any/every android phone there is.
Phone was working fine, have been putting any and all custom roms on that i wanted, but went to install a new custom rom (cog4), and it fails every single time at system/xbin/su. Now ANY rom i install (custom), gives me that same error. NO CUSTOM ROM WILL INSTALL. THEY ALL FAIL. I have flashed back to stock a million times, wiped, re-partitioned the sd card, master cleared, and done all of those in every combination possible. The ONLY rom i can put on here is the one i had RIGHT before this problem started (cog3.04). Only roms that can be flashed via odin will go on my phone now. All zip files fail.
I am not a noob and know my way around a computer. I promise if someone tries to help me i will be very prompt in my responses and will try ANYTHING that you ask me to. I have been googling for over a week hours a day, i am never gonna resolve this issue unless someone with the know-how helps me Every time this topic is brought up on any forum on the internet, the problem never gets solved and it fades away....there is no answers out there. Someone who knows this stuff is my only hope
I will pay you to help me even if your troubleshooting does not work
Just out of curiosity, did you open Rom Manager once you installed it to grant it superuser rights? Also, make sure you Click the top link in Rom Manger and choose your phone. "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Yes tim i have done that.
I sent you a private message -- here is the same:
Have you tried adb root - and then from / rm -rf * and see if you can wipe all clean. Ofcourse if the issue is the partition, then this won't help. Also I have never tried this - as this has never been an issue for me.

I read that post but the update-script in Cog4 doesn't have those lines. You could in theory edit the script so that it just has those three lines but I'm not sure that would be sufficient to install Cog4. That may be a question for DG.

Not sure as this looks like a patch and specifically asks for no wipe. Also my knowledge is limited as to what harm you can do that will make the phone unusable -- BUT you are already into that realm . Perhaps someone with deeper specific experience can answer this????
Open Root Explorer and remount R/W. Switch to the system partition and look at the permissions on bin and xbin. They should both be rwxr-xr-x

ok make sure your usb debugging is on before you run commands. If thats on try to just copy and paste the command instead of typing them. If that doesn't work then start over. Your gold card should be good.
I had to type it in about four times before it actually worked.

You should use the most updated version of the hack kit in case something important has changed, also make sure your not typing hackerize- ace clean" as you did above. It should be hackerize-ace clean, no space between -ace like you had put.
alright i tried it like that and i got the same error
Are you using Version 8 of the hack kit? if so just copy "hackerize-ace clean" and paste it in case there is any miscommunicastion and let me know.

yes i am using version 8 of the hack kit and when i enter it it still says no such file or directory
I had the same problem the first time I ran it and it stopped for some reason. Tbh I think the "clean" action just kills the adb server and restarts it but I could be wrong.
ya im just not sure what to do at this pointe since its not working
I had to redo the hack kit a little while ago and I didnt do the "clean" step just did adb kill-server and then adb start-server. I havent had any problems and everything is fine but thats just me, there still is a possibility it can mess up your phone im assuming.
No.. your not doing anything wrong the command runs in the background and doesnt return anything... if you keep running again and again it wont do anything cus you already cleaned..

You need to use an app like Root Explorer or you can use terminal emulator and type in these commands (all without quotes and press enter after each one):
"su"
"cd /system/media/audio/ui"
"ls" -- this will list all of the files in the directory, find the one that you want to get rid of then type
"rm <filename>" replacing <filename> with the name of the file you want to remove. Hope this helps!
If you don't want to use adb or the terminal, download a program onyour computer called Android Commander. It's a gui that does the command stuff for you.

sdcard permissions messed up?

Ive factory reset several times now, I've reflashed the android l preview image several times, and flashed two 5.0 roms over it even, and i even tried a multiboot with cm11. My device can't take pictures, video, basically anything to do with the camera doesnt work. Pictures seem to take, but don't save. Video or any panorama crashes the camera, and the error logs show something about permission denied to the files they are trying to create. How can i fix this?
Did you copy all your data back to the phone via recovery?
Usually for L, you run
su
restorecon -FR /data/media/0
...which is mentioned in his sticky lots of times.
But If you copied all sdcard data back to your phone via recovery, there's a different approach

No it's uncommon. I've only sewn it for people using recovery or adb to push and pull sdcard folders.
Download and flash this zip via recovery.

The adb (or TWRP MTP) only seems to break permissions if you're pushing folders. Pishing individual files should be fine.

Its not related to L at all. Files should be fine to push. Its just folders I think that cause the issue.
