Hey XDA,
I want to start by saying I have searched XDA and have not found a thread with this particular information.
I have noticed that my 4G LTE speeds have slowed down quite a bit since March when the Thunderbolt was first released. During the first few days of having the phone I would never see speeds lower than 25Mbps. Lately I have only been reaching somewhere between 7-11Mbps.
Are other people in NYC experiencing this "throttling" of speed? Could it be due to the fact that the 4G towers are now saturated with more subscribers since there are now three 4G phones and more wireless usb cards/sticks?
I must also say that I am now on the MR2 (official) radio and I am running CM7 RC1.2. I don't believe it is a ROM issue since I can sometimes peak at speeds of 26Mbps but I won't sustain them.
I'm posting a poll to see what speeds people are experiencing. I hope this thread is useful to some.
If its a sustained issue, then I would venture to guess that indeed the towers are more saturated. Being in a huge metropolitan area like NYC, that wouldn't surprise me.
Your ROM shouldn't affect your LTE speed.

Yeah that's one possibility I imagined. I notice that I get higher speeds during "off-peak" hours, but I never reach that 30Mbps I used to reach on day one.
Nonetheless, I still think Verizon LTE blows the competitors when it comes to speed here in NYC.
Oh yeah. Fastest network hands down. No one else comes close to Verizon's LTE speeds. Even at 15 mb/s...

Verizon's LTE speed has always been advertised as 5-12mbps. The higher speeds you were receiving were due to low amount of devices on their network. Expect that range to be normal with anything higher a bonus.

Wow. Forgot to check the web version. I'm getting about 10-15 Mbps on the Speedtest App and about 25-30 Mbps on the web version! Curious isn't it!? Maybe the app is still buggy?

the app is very inconsistent but with the website check on Murray and Greenwich I pull in the typical 25+ down and 4.5+ up
Still going strong for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdF3AnNc308
Could be a tower that my apt is connected to, otherwise it's usually between 16-40mbps all over NYC including Queens and Brooklyn. Upload could be better though.
My Droid Charge has never connected to 4g at my house which is located on the east side of the botanical gardens across from Bethabraham in fact its on 1xrtt right now.
And performance is inconsistent near Fordham Plaza. 90KB/s on minute and 280KB/s the next.
well this is my mentioned average from above...ill show the speakeasy.net result upon my return to work tomorrow night

Speedtest app shows much slower on CM7
On Sense ROMs the Speedtest app showed much faster speeds (> 15Mbps), but on CM7 it looks very slow (<2 Mbps today in fact). Speakeasy.net shows much faster (37 Mbps today). I can't say which is more accurate, but I definitely don't feel like network speeds are slower on CM. Any more reliable ways to test?
I'm also in NYC.
I believe that assuming that the Speedtest App works accurately on Sense-based ROMs. I have been running CM7 for weeks now.

Just USB tether it. If you're paying for it, USB Connection Mode will give you the absolute best network performance as the phone becomes USB modem, and all the data functions on the phone itself halt and all the juice is passed to the PC.
All of this is wonderful, and I'd LOVE nothing more than to pull the trigger on Verizon LTE except for one small problem:
Assuming you get 10 Mbps download speeds, it would take you 136 minutes downloading at that speed to hit the 10GB data cap, the highest one Verizon offers.
Which by the way, cost you $80.
I'll settle for Clear Wireless at 3-4 Mbps with unlimited data for $45/month.

Well I would double check the fine print on your clear contract as I'm almost pretty sure they throttle or cut off your data past a certain point. If they don't, you're still settling for subpar speeds that most wouldn't dare consider 4G.
Good luck!
NYC Verizon LTE upper limit real world speeds:
milan03, those are some impressive numbers!
I'm running CM 7.1.1 and I seem to be experiencing the problem with AOSP ROMs when running the Speedtest.net App. what's new (or maybe not) is that I just noticed under details that my connection type is eHRPD and NOT LTE. Could this be the cause of the slower speeds received using the app?
I also tried using the stock browser and obtained a significantly higher score in the low 20's Mbps.

got my Tbolt about a month ago. during the first week or two, it was registering 4G speeds of about 20-25 mbps using the speedtest app. however, since then it's registering only about 5 mbps using the speedtest app. anybody experiencing the same decline in speeds? it seems to cap off at 5 mbps regardless of the number of reception bars - full bars vs. 2 bars.
unrooted, using stock, live in SF bay area. i'm wondering if my settings are incorrectly after messing around with my Modem Settings under the ##778# screen. my revA setting is set to eHRPD. and my settings for Preferred Network type under *#*#4636#*#* is set to CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto.
these are the correct stock settings for 4G coverage, no?
Speeds have been choppy for me as well in the Bay Area. Some days my 4g pulls less than 5mbps and some in the mid 20s.

Same here, I got the phone the first week it was out and just as you I had
19Mbps to 22Mbps. Then a week later 4g crashed and we were running on 1x speeds for a few days, when I rebooted my phone I was @ 4Mbps to 5Mbps. So I called tech support ran a few test and was told this was our normal speeds. I even sent him a link to what I was testing out of the box.

I live in central Ohio and have a constant 4 bars when running 4g. When I was testing a tethered connection to my computer, with my ISP I get 12Mbps to 18Mbps. Using the phone I got 20Mbps but this was short lived a few days later I got 4Mbps.
Hopefully the speeds will @ 15 to 20Mbps again.

Obviously you can't read. You are getting 5Mbps, VZW states 5-12Mbps. Sounds about right to me. You aren't the only person who is using 4G, think about that too.
If you car was estimated to get 32mpg, and you got 31, would you be calling the car dealer to complain?
Most of you wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't for the speedtest app.
Seeing as the speedtest app wasn't programmed right for 4G right off anyways...
That, and network saturation is a b!tch
don't know the numbers but mines is still fast as hell...way faster then my cablevison modem...damn shame

Wow who pissed in your CHEERIOS?
And yes I can read. Nice Forum.
If you have read the beginning of the post the question IS "4g Speeds Slower Now?" Quick answer yes. Same experience as the poster. First received blazing speeds for about a week until 4g crashed.
Speedtest is an just app and the measurement may not be that accurate but it do give you something to compare to. As far as my car I get terrible gas mileage but also paid a luxury tax, no complaints.
Actually, ever since I installed new radio, the reception is worse, and the speeds aren't as consistent even during late nights in the locations i used to get -51dBm now i get -75dBm.
Is there any way I can go back to the old radio? unrooted.
the speedtest app is not accurate on GB. instead try browsing to speakeasy.net and do a test there. I was just able to run 2 tests ~21dn ~1.5up in DFW. right now speedtest app is showing 6-8dn... also of note it is also noon here, usually a high traffic time and i work in an extremely high traffic area (AT&T is useless here). Seems speeds have jumped today as i have been getting 10-15 down since the outage. looks like they have flipped some sort of a switch here in DFW today?
with the new radio the speed is horrible and is no problem with speedtest.net app, try to download something and u will see, plus i had a lot of times when i was on 4g and the internet was dead, all apps wore showing "network problem"
where is the 30-40M speed on 4g, the 4g was better then my home internet. now.....

I eat frosted flakes actually, don't like cheerios. Plus I make sure only milk goes in my cereal, so there was definitely no pissing.
Read again what you said, you called to complain to Verizon because you were getting the speeds they advertised .
Are 4G speeds slower now, common sense would obviously say yes, when 4G was "released" only people with a 4G "modem" could get it, in only a few cities. Now, there are 2 phones to go along with the 2 modem's, and a whole slew of new cities. More users on a network = general overall slowdown. This is a phone, not a torrent.
As far as your car, that's cool, you paid a luxury tax, so that makes it better... lol
but what is the point to have 4g with 3g or worst speed.
is like u have a v8 car working all the time only with 4 pistons.
it is not our fault that they r upgrading the network slower than they sign contracts and sell more 4g devices.
they r making more money, more profit they need to make the network to support the load. but like all big companies all that meter is MORE PROFIT.
all this for me looks like fake advertising, like i am selling u a car that suppose to be fast, it is for one month but after is very slow and other cheaper and older cars passing u in speed.
I'm getting between 4.5 and 5 down today but I am running a GB ROM and these are leaked radios so personally I'm not going to shoot Verizon considering I'm running alpha bits cereal on my phone.
Normally on the phone (I only use speakeasy's site) I'd get on a typical test 12-18 down and 2 up.
I just ran my speedtest about 8 times, everything is looking good here. When I first got the phone I was getting 45D/28U... Does that mean I should call and complain to VZW?

You probably mean 5.2 down and 1.3 up.
I'm in the Tampa, FL area. I'm getting 5+ down and 1-2 up pretty regularly in my area. I'm happy...it's beats the crap out of my old T-Mobile BS. More importantly, the coverage is WAY better.
Yes where do you all live? Where can I get these speeds?
Does anyone know if the icon in the task bar actually reflects what type of tower you are connected to? i.e. will it say "3G" if you are connected to a non-"enhanced backhaul" tower? Mine always shows the "H+" icon, and my speeds have ranged from 1.5Mbps to 8Mbps.
Well it shouldn't. Hspa+ should be available everywhere hspa was, and that's att's entire 3g network. So anywhere you got 3g you should get hspa+. That doesn't mean the tower can supply data speeds in the range of hspa+ 7mbit to 21mbit. The speed to the tower is being called "backhaul"
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
That's what I was asking - if the H+ indicated the tower was upgraded or if it just shows H+ always. I had hoped for the former but expected the latter.
the h+ is only the cell technology used between the phone and the tower, and all 3g towers are upgraded to use hspa+, but this doesnt indicate the towers connection to the network, so even if the tower can only supply 0.0000001mbit, itll still say h+. the only way to know what you can get from your area is to look at your actual speeds.
Just hit 11.47 down and 1.64 up out here in NYC. Pretty good if you ask me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Thanks, that answers my question. I was just hoping for an easy way to know which areas were upgraded, since I assume that even with an upgraded tower it's possible to see speeds below 7Mbps and therefore it wouldn't be cut and dried. I've only seen 7+ speeds in one spot so far (at work), I see more in the 2 to 4Mbps range so I guess a lot of my area is not upgraded.
I am very envious. We are supposed to be getting it in the next month. Of course by then we won't have the free tethering anymore.

Yes, this does have to do with my Inspire, since I compared to it.
I stopped by a bunch of stores today to check out some LTE phones, their speeds, and the devices, to see how much they stand up to the hype.
On my stop at an AT&T LTE store, I came across the Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket. I did a speed test on the device, and came up with these crazy numbers!
I made absolutely sure wifi was off so that the numbers would not be skewed. Also, there was an LG Nitro HD right next to it, in which I ran the same speedtest, and only got about 2Mb/1Mb. Of course I repeated the test numerous times just to make sure, and each time they came out about the same. I whipped out my Inspire 4G, and got about 4Mb/2Mb.
What's going on here? The only thing I could guess was that they were provisioning all the local bandwidth to the Skyrocket in hopes of trying to sell it quicker.
What do you guys think?
Well, Let's see. The skyrocket has LTE, the Inspire does not, hence the speed difference. You do the math.
It's legit.

It think it's fairly obvious that LTE is going to have a huge speed difference, but not THIS huge. I went to a Verizon store today also, and it got nowhere near those speeds. Also, why didn't the HTC Vivid and LG Nitro HDs that were on display get even close to those speeds, even though they were running on 4G LTE?
I think the real meat of this story is the fact that the OP's inspire received better Speed Test results than the new LG Nitro did. I find that interesting.
I'm with the OP in wondering if maybe they're provisioning the bandwidth for certain phones in certain markets.
I believe it's all a conspiracy. I got decent speeds on my Inspire every now and then, but I just wish the speeds were more consistent. I have a Skyrocket now and the speeds can be exceptionally nice in certain areas.

Not trying to pass off a wifi result as a true cellular data result are you?
don't mean to be off topic(i apologize), i understand theese speeds are lightning freakn fast, but what is one to do with theese speeds, at the current rate anybody running on a 2gig plan can expect to run that out quickly, right? check in on threads about phones running lte, and there will be a thread called throttled (for unlimited data users), 22mbs is great but two weeks later some are running 100kbs, sounds tough. so what exactly is the point of the large bandwith? faster cpu, dual core n such i get, but speeds like that are meant for home entertainement/pc, gaming console/pc, work etc.

Yea, but the mobile signal is limited by the distance to the various cell towers. Renewing the connection isn't going to boost the signal or magically make that distance any shorter, it'll simply refresh/renew it.
I smell serious bull**** with that app. Only thing I don't understand is the number of reviews.

See, I am thinking like you are! I agree with all your statments. Unless this app modifies TCP packet sizes and the like I cant see how it will boost performance....
But what intrigued me was the number of "5" ratings. Maybe it really does do something.
I might try it out this weekend. I always have slow data on HSPA+. On my Rezound with LTE I could get between 10 to 15 average down at home (boondocks) and in the city would easy hit 25+ When I was in the mall one day I scored 45 down. Thats not joke!
I miss my LTE and I know that HSPA+ will never hit speeds like that I am still under-enthused with AT&T's speeds. I was really hoping to get the 10Megs but I am waffling at 1.5 to 3megs down
Also let it be known I am on the 1.85 Radios. I have heard a lot of good things about the 1.88 so I might give that a shot this weekend too. However, I do get a solid signal so I cant complain tooooo much!

Testing
I dont have time to test this over a whole day because I have work and in my free time I am playing with Scott's cleanROM. But did a couple of tests on this this morning using speedtest.
My setup is:
AT&T HTC One X (Obviously)
CleanROM 2.6 Standard Edition
Kernal: 3.0.8-01158
Build Number 1.85.502.3
Baseband version: 0.17.32.09.12 (Is this the radio?)
Sitting at the same spot with my phone inhand in midtown NYC I was on LTE with a network strength of:
RSP (dBm): -70
RSRQ(dB): -7
I ran speedtest without the app 5x on two different servers
Secaucus
Download Average: 12.91 MBsp
Upload Average: 13.628
Ping Average: 49.6
New York
Download Average: 12.72 mbsp
Upload Average: 14.16
Ping Average: 49
Then installed and ran the app and did the same process with speedtest
Secaucus
Download Average: 12.72 MBsp
Upload Average: 14.65
Ping Average: 50.4
New York
Download Average: 13.34 mbsp
Upload Average: 14.93
Ping Average: 50.2
This app made be consistently get a better upload speed (not by much) and the download speeds were far more volatile IMO I didnt see enough to keep the app. But then again im a noob :/
Deleting the app now to get back to CleanROM 2.6 fun

That download speed is about what I average on AT&T's LTE network but my upload is usually at least double that. I've hit over 60Mbps down numerous times. I'm in the metro Atlanta area so I'm not sure if it's that good everywhere.
I had thought about trying this app out before because I used to lose LTE signal when I got by my house but with the newer radio I get 3 bars of LTE now. I also live about 50 miles north of Atlanta. Needless to say, I'm very impressed with the distance their LTE signal reaches to.
Good for all of you who are in LTE area.. Here in Jacksonville.. All we got are nice beach and beautiful girls in bikini... I'll rather have LTE speeds than those..
All I have here is crappy HSPa+ from At&t and bad signal reception. F*ck At&t

See, I am thinking like you are! I agree with all your statments. Unless this app modifies TCP packet sizes and the like I cant see how it will boost performance....
But what intrigued me was the number of "5" ratings. Maybe it really does do something.

I think you're really missing your Rezound lol. Don't worry I miss it too. Extremely underrated phone.

Got my N5 over lunch, and got it set up.
Coming from HSPA+42 on my HTC One S, I immediately installed Speedtest app to see what I get now. Boy was I disappointed.
1. It has trouble actually completing any tests. Half the time it ends in "Network Communications Issues" error message.
2. When it DOES complete a test, it's disappointing on the speed. I've gotten a max of 10mbps down, and 2mbps up. This doesn't make any sense, as my One S was able to get 7mbps down and 5-6mbps up.
Anyone else dealing with this? The phone's great, but I swear, if T-Mobile is gonna F up this whole LTE implementation, I'm gonna be royally pissed.
Are your APN settings correct?
Also, wrong section, this belongs in the Q&A section.
my tmobile was activated in store, so i'm not sure if that matters, but i have had no issues since switching this morning. solid LTE connection pulling down 15mbps pretty consistently
LTE working fine on T-Mobile here. Maybe it's a bad simcard?

I tested T-mobile's HSPA+ and LTE on the Nexus 5, HTC One, and Moto X, all side by side and running concurrently with the tests repeated frequently throughout the day. The Nexus 5 did just as good as the others and had a trend towards better speeds (the N5 still has the fastest speed I've gotten at my work of all 3 devices). The reception is also slightly better on the Nexus 5 over the other two phones, averaging about 10-15 dB better than the Moto X which is the worst of the 3 devices.
T-mobile's network, from my experience, does not offer consistently fast data throughput. I can run speed tests back-to-back and get a 10-fold change in data speeds. It doesn't seem to impact actual performance enough for me to notice, but it'll be reflected on all the tests I run. I think the device is perfectly fine.

Bad simcard couldn't possibly be the cause of a data conectivity issue. If it was a bad SIM, the whole connection (data, voice, SMS, MMS, etc) would fail, so I know there's no issue there. Plus, it's been working fine in my One S (though a bit slow on T-Mo's HSPA+ network). This same issue also happened on my GF's N5 last night when I was testing hers out.
Also, for the first response -- yes, APN is by default set to fast.tmobile. I checked that first to make sure it wasn't set to EPC instead.
LTE is working great on TMO for me. I'm getting about 10-11mb down and 6-8mb up. I'm not really close to a tower either, their network is mostly in the city area - I'm just outside of it by a few miles. I didn't modify anything on my phone -just popped my sim out of my Nexus 4 and put it in my Nexus 5.
Must be you.

My speed test were just like yours op. Not sure if its the phone or my APN settings but the Nokia 521 that I had prior had better speeds. Its especially noticeable and slow when it goes in h mode.

What city was that in?
My T-Mobile LTE speed tests here in Indianapolis are crap compared to that .

Wow, I wish I was getting those speeds on TMO in the Bay Area. I can't even get LTE in most of Los Gatos. Wonder if it's because I'm on prepaid....
I am also having the same problem. I have the $30 plan and in the DC area. On the upload test, sometimes I get "Network Communication Issue" error and sometimes when I am successful. On the successful attempt, for the first seconds or so, I get good speed but then it just died and drop the overall speed to at most 2.5 Mbps.
I am getting "Network communications issues" as well. My apn is fast.t-mobile.com. I am in the Baltimore area. Interestingly I get this more in the areas where my signal is strongest.
Edit: For me, when it fails it's always the upload test that fails. I just ran another test and got 22 down/1.13 up. Since the upload speed was much lower than normal I ran the test again and that time the upload test failed again.

Yeah, I second this one. Up until sometime late last winter/early spring I got REALLY GOOD HSPA+ with an n4, and then suddenly it went ENTIRELY into the crapper, as in mostly useless in a worse way than Sprint. i.e. seemingly good one second crap the next(T-mo HSPA+) v. just totally crap(Sprint).
With the n5, I no longer have the HSPA+ dropouts on LTE, but bandwidth is no better than the best it ever was on HSPA+, which in reality, is fine with me as I only use it when not at home/work/somewhere with REAL low latency broadband(although I must admit that at home I have comcraptic, which I really don't consider real given the variability in latency and bandwidth which I consider to be unacceptable even for home use given the wide variation/cost of "product").
That said T-mo since sometime early this year was utter **** on HSPA+ while beforehand it was pretty awesomely good. LTE gets me only back to where the "awesome" was and ain't awesome at ALL for LTE, but better than Sprint or AT&T, as Verizon crushes all comers overall(gotta love full signal in the boondocks of BFE upper peninsula... not dropping out in underpasses(AT&T), etc.) .
[EDIT]
Oh yeah, by HSPA+ "awesome" I'm talking:
60-120ms pings(test server coupla miles away)
c. 8Mbps on a "good" day down
c. 2Mbps on a "good" day up
And theoretically, I'm in a VERY good/EXCELLENT coverage area... so it's like I got very good HSPA+ then crap HSPA+ then crap LTE that was about as "good" as very good HSPA+... [EDIT2] I'm NO WAY NEAR those 20+ Mbps bandwidth tests, never have been... [/EDIT2]
Still better than my alternatives for the price though I guess... voice/messaging works as well as Sprint/Verizon, data is WAY WAY WAY better than Sprint, voice messaging is WAY/WAY/WAY better than AT&T, and then welp we're done with our choices... (although I expect a cap R when in the boondocks of the UP... v. full signal no R, OTOH it's a bit cheaper... which ATM is a factor...)
[/EDIT]
I wasn't getting LTE at all on my phone, got a new sim card and that fixed the problem. The guys at my t-mo store were super helpful.
I am also receiving the "Network communications issues" error when testing my speed. It will hover around 5 - 6 Mbps downstream and before the test can finish it will say "Network communications issues". I am on T-Mobile's LTE in Milwaukee. APN setting is "fast.t-mobile.com" which is the recommended setting for LTE speeds by T-Mobile.
Edit: I am using a nano sim that I had recently got and am using a micro sim adapter.
Count me in!
I also get "network communications issues". It always happens on upload. Never had this on the N4.
I get 6-8 Mbps download and 1-4 Mbps upload on T-mobile LTE. Upload always spikes the first couple seconds and then stays consistently low.
I am using a full size sim card that I cut down to micro size. I also have two micro sims I ordered from Tmobile. I'll give one of those a try at the end of my month to see if that makes a difference.
