Verizon demos GB based Video app - Thunderbolt General

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/07/1...bolt-at-lte-innovation-center-we-want-it-now/
So where is our GB or at least this video app

The same place as our promised Skype with video chat, stuck in limbo forever and ever.

That's way VZW not releasing Skype
I was thinking maybe that's way VZW didn't release the Skype with video chat.
This is so they can charge us for their very own video chat service.
They're just refusing to be a dumb pipe.

Yeah but for now, I'm happy for 3G calling......they could of held out and not given us 3g calling in the usa! Hopefully someone can get that one skype app that was ripped from the thunderbolt to work on the EVO and we'll have video chat working too!

yes, that would be awesome. i was very hopeful when that came out. i never use skype for calling, only video chatting.
I use it when I'm in an area where my cell phone reception isn't up to par but YEAH the video chatting is what I use at home mostly. But is still cool to have the option open just in case you do want to call someone via 3G instead of your phone line.
Just think about this.....you can now call someone up to three ways on your EVO....google voice, your regular phone line and now skype.....is amazing how technology keeps on growing...hahahaha
Now the question is:
Could someone make Google Voice forward to a SkypeIn number, and then cancel their voice plan minutes completely? That would be awesome.
I've heard there are some voicemail issues with this, but not sure.

I'm sure you could. The bigger question is, with Sprint + GV integrating, if you choose to use your Sprint number as your GV number, could you then disable ringing of your Sprint number and only use the SkypeIn number?
Congratulations!!! Now we gonna wait a year to get video.
Or somebody hack verizon app.

[Q] Data via. Wifi

Basically I'm wondering, if I could buy a WP7 phone (probably HD7) and use wifi for data and use apps for making calls and such over wifi. If not, I'm looking for WP7 on a prepaid service.
Thanks in advanced!
I can answer the first one but not the second one. I got both a samsung focus and a HTC inspire 4g.
For the first three weeks of ownership I keep the sim card in the HTC and used both wifi date and mifi data for the focus. now as for makeing calls on the focus using an app over wifi I haven't tried that yet. I do not know if there is an app for that nor have I looked for one. however, att's go phone now has a smart phone plan that you can also use. hope this helped
Thanks, but the GO Phone doesn't have any smart phones. It's OK, I'll look for some WP7 apps
EDIT: I think I'll just buy the full price HD7, and get skype. Thanks!
Before you go out wasted your money, you should know that currently there is no Skype for WP7. The API is not there yet to support any VoIP apps.
There's a google voice app...free version and paid are kinda the same. Main difference is a big one. Paid offers push notifications while the free version does not.

Google Voice uses your phone's voice minutes to communicate/dial out. You can't use it just over wi-fi.

I know, but Microsoft bought Skype, so it's inevitable.
And is there Google Voice for WP7?
Google Voice is never designed to be VoIP, even on Android phones. Probably Google's way to not piss off carriers.
Mango will have socket API that is needed for VoIP apps. But with current schedule, you probably won't see such app until early next year.

Question about QIK video call app.

Hi I send my iPhone 4 to my sister in Tokyo, but she didn't place a SIM card on it, and she tried video calling me using the iPhone 4 connected via wifi by entering my number, I answered and video is clear and voice, even without a SIM card on his part.
My question is will I be charge for something?

it only uses your # as a point of contact. the only thing you'd be billed is your data allowance if you weren't on wifi yourself

Ok I was just curious because she dialed my phone number even the iPhone 4 has no SIM. And the video call was very clear from her iPhone 4 to my infuse 4g. She even told me my video is very clear and smooth while hers is pixelated but it's ok may be because iPhone 4 has a VGA ffc. I hope you are sure I don't want to get charge by overseas call thanks

Iphone 4 is using qik, but it has no SIM when she tried it, and she dialed my US number on the qik app. I'm not sure if att will charge me.

Your not going to get charged for making a Qik "call" from your phone. It's just data. You only get charged minutes for voice calls. Unless you are over your allotted data usage. Then you just get charged for that.

video calling on the iphone isnt as good as the commercials make it out to be. it really does come down to that vga camera which can only process video at 320p nonwidescreen and low framerate. the actual facetime software is really nice though, and it would be great to see it come to android and windows, rather than just iphone and mac. until then theres qik and hopefully soon skype, but verizon was holding that one back and im sure microsoft will now too.
video calling on the iphone is only over wifi anyway. but yeah qik doesnt use minutes. it uses wifi or data. and winmo had real videocalling as does the i9000 which has a video button in the dialer. why att didnt get that feature i dont know. maybe the network desnt support the protocol samsung used, maybe att felt it uses too much data, maybe it is just impractical in america because there are too few phones that use video calling. for some reason the video calling never caught on in america but it is not all that new on a cell phone. infact samsung had it onthe f700 back in 2006 maybe earier, im sure others had it as well.
also yeah the video from vga will suck viewed on a wvga phone. the upscalling will make it look worse than if it was on an iphone for 2 reasons, the resolution is not a multiple of vga so te scalling doesnt work out nicely, and because the infuse screen is flipping huge! even if we had the iphones resolution or native vga we would think it sucked. this is about as big as you can go with wvga, never mind vga. i can see the pixels as it is, wish we had qhd res.

[Q] video calls

My wife and I currently have 3G phones on an alltel plan, I was under the assumption, after a few talks with customer service, that I was unable to get a 4G phone on my alltel plan, but the verizon (store) rep just told me that I could...
We were going to get the incredible 2 because I want a FFC to video chat with my two young kids but now it seems I can get a 4G phone, but need to decide soon as they are about to go to tiered data plans...
So my question, how well does the video chat work on the Charge? Has anyone done it between two charges... is the picture pretty clear and sound insync?
And with the 4G off, can I easily get a day out of the battery (unlike my incredible I have)?
thanx for your help...
still trying to decide between the charge and the revolution, but leaning towards the Charge
There are not many mainstream video chat apps out there right now. Video chat should be coming to skype and google talk soon. Because of this I have yet to do any video chatting with my phone.
Obviously battery life varries greatly from user to user but I get at least 8 hours with everything on and a decent amount of usage (I don't place many phone calls though).

video calls through 3g?

I'm surprised to see the htc sensation phone app doesn't provide video call support
I know I can use skype via wifi but would be nice ove the 3g network.
regards
It used to be possible on my old nokia N95 I had years ago and that only had 3g iirc.
It's funny, it was phased out because nobody saw the point of it and was a waste of time and money. Then five years later crapple decided they'd include it as a cough cough NEW feature, and it suddenly became fashionable to be able to do video calling...
