Hi I send my iPhone 4 to my sister in Tokyo, but she didn't place a SIM card on it, and she tried video calling me using the iPhone 4 connected via wifi by entering my number, I answered and video is clear and voice, even without a SIM card on his part.
My question is will I be charge for something?

it only uses your # as a point of contact. the only thing you'd be billed is your data allowance if you weren't on wifi yourself

Ok I was just curious because she dialed my phone number even the iPhone 4 has no SIM. And the video call was very clear from her iPhone 4 to my infuse 4g. She even told me my video is very clear and smooth while hers is pixelated but it's ok may be because iPhone 4 has a VGA ffc. I hope you are sure I don't want to get charge by overseas call thanks

Iphone 4 is using qik, but it has no SIM when she tried it, and she dialed my US number on the qik app. I'm not sure if att will charge me.

Your not going to get charged for making a Qik "call" from your phone. It's just data. You only get charged minutes for voice calls. Unless you are over your allotted data usage. Then you just get charged for that.

video calling on the iphone isnt as good as the commercials make it out to be. it really does come down to that vga camera which can only process video at 320p nonwidescreen and low framerate. the actual facetime software is really nice though, and it would be great to see it come to android and windows, rather than just iphone and mac. until then theres qik and hopefully soon skype, but verizon was holding that one back and im sure microsoft will now too.
video calling on the iphone is only over wifi anyway. but yeah qik doesnt use minutes. it uses wifi or data. and winmo had real videocalling as does the i9000 which has a video button in the dialer. why att didnt get that feature i dont know. maybe the network desnt support the protocol samsung used, maybe att felt it uses too much data, maybe it is just impractical in america because there are too few phones that use video calling. for some reason the video calling never caught on in america but it is not all that new on a cell phone. infact samsung had it onthe f700 back in 2006 maybe earier, im sure others had it as well.
also yeah the video from vga will suck viewed on a wvga phone. the upscalling will make it look worse than if it was on an iphone for 2 reasons, the resolution is not a multiple of vga so te scalling doesnt work out nicely, and because the infuse screen is flipping huge! even if we had the iphones resolution or native vga we would think it sucked. this is about as big as you can go with wvga, never mind vga. i can see the pixels as it is, wish we had qhd res.

As we all know the the Nexus S has VoIP/SIP support and can be turned into a wifi hotspot, does this mean it will also support wifi calling?
What exactly do you think voip/sip are!?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I've heard about it but I'm not really sure what it does exactly, that I'm here asking.
i'd be sold if this was able to do a uma-like wifi calling.
it'll probably do UMA/t-mobile wi-fi calling once someone ports the app over.
Yes, it will support Wifi calling. I have been running a beta GV with the sip stacks for about a month and works great.
VOIP and UMA are NOT the same thing. One might use Google voice which is VOIP but not UMA. I could care less about Voip but if the Nexus S can't do UMA it is a deal breaker and will just pick up the Mytouch 4G. Already sad that the Nexus isn't 4G and doesn't have external storage but with no UMA support I will just get the Mytouch and wait for gingerbread to make its way to that.
UMA would be nice, but i'm good without it, but i seriously think it'll get ported somehow.
i think what the original poster is getting at, will it be able to use the tmobile wifi calling app.
i have a nexus one with it now so i can make phone calls. i am interested in this as well because i really don't want to pay another provider to make calls on top of what i am currently paying tmobile.
I'm wondering the same thing and this is actually the only feature that has me wanting this phone if it does in fact allow wifi calling.
My Nexus one has a broken usb port and i've been forced to swap batteries the last few months while waiting for the first gingerbread phone to arrive. I was already hoping for so much more like 720p display, dual core, new ui, because it barely feels like it's an upgrade over my N1 as is.
When the official specs were announced I almost considered going to the iphone4 or Samsung Focus but I just can't do AT&T, lol.
Pretty sure G-Voice via VOIP would be better than the original wifi-calling app, anyway. I wasn't all that impressed with the wifi-calling app on N1, honestly.
How so? The T-Mobile app is free and uses your minutes from the calling plan. Gvoice requires payment ontop of your calling plan. I don't want to pay twice for the same service.

I've been using google voice for a year, and I've never paid a dime for anything. Unless you know something I don't know about some new service fee for g-voice when used in concert with VOIP, you may wanna re-assess g-voice altogether. It's flippin' AWESOME!.....
....AND FREE!!!
In all fairness, though.... call quality on the wifi app was poor for me. Volume was really low. Could be the fact that I was using an N1 hacked version, but I doubt it. If g-voice is only using the data you already paid for, then I don't see how it could cost anymore. Maybe I'm missing something though.

GVoice doesn't require any payments. Calls to USA & Canada are free. Any other country have their rates, however. We still don't know how exactly is the VoIP implemented on the Nexus S, so can't say how it'll work as of now.

UMA and GAN are the same thing...in 2005 UMA specs were incorporated into the 3GPP rel. 6 specs and were renamed "Generic Access Network" or GAN.
The current list of phones that are UMA/GAN can be found here at
www .umatoday.com/smartphones.php
Currently the Nexus S is not there but that could just be because it is not out yet. Just have to see if after the release date if they update the list

If I was able to figure out how to use Google Voice to make calls over wireless LAN with mobile number, that will be a good alternative to wifi calling.
Wifi calling works fine on Vibrant
Blackberry supports wifi to cell handoff, Android handsets don't. Not sure whether Android is technically UMA or not. Either way the key is being able to receive calls over wifi. If you're stuck in the bowels of some massive office building and you have zero signal, being able to receive text messages and calls fluidly would be awesome. Especially if they're able to call or text to your regular number.

GVoice on Android isn't VoIP, it just routes through your GVoice number. You need a SIP account like Gizmo5 etc to set it up. GVoice in GMail on your desktop IS VoIP. Hopefully they bring something like that soon..
As for how SIP/VoIP calling will work on the Nexus S, we'll just have to wait a few more days to find out, with concrete details.
Both phandroid and Droid life have confirmed that this phone will not only do data and voice over 4g but 3g as well. Yeah! Just another thing to be excited about

No. simultaneous data and voice is not possible over cdma. They are both wrong. What might happen is voice will go over cdma and data over lte or both will transmit over lte. If you live in an area without lte, you are out of luck.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
how is it possible?
since the new iPhone 4 will do it apperntly they have figured out a way to do it, and you guys only think its not possible because thats what verizon has aalways said, and ven if it doesnt, who the hell cares, who wants to talk and look at the web at the same time
What should work and should not and why (I work on the network)
Ok, I am an engineer working on VZW's network, as well as in the past worked on GSM stuff as well. The reason that VZW could not do voice and data at the same time is because CDMA voice, 1xRTT data, 2G voice, 3G voice, EVDO REV0 and REVA all use the same channel groupes. VZW uses channels 283, 242, 201, 160, 78, 37, and 1019 in the 800 A Band, and with Alltel Acquisition now has 466, 548, 589, and so fourth, the PCS spectrum is abundant too. The LTE is on 700 mhz so uses a different set of radios so could in theory run it at the same time as voice since it would use the other radios to do it. Thats the reason it can work but if they write the software to do it is another thing. They might not because of battery life, would be like running 2 phones off the same battery at the same time. The iPhone will not do it because it will not be LTE ;-)
You could be entirely right as I'm not an engineer for Verizon so I'm not sure, just going off of info based on what I believe I read on one of the android blogs. You can actually talk and surf at the same time. All you need is speakerphobe or headphones ans I wifi connection lol. But I'm pretty sure that anyone on these forums knows that;-)

Fixed your quote for you, one word SVDO.
I wonder if they're doing VOIP trick so they are techinally only doing data alone.
There's nothing prevent HTC from directing the phone dialer through their own VOIP applicaiton.
Also, the iPhone on verizon will not be doing simultaneous voice/data.
So, this is like when you are talking to someone on the phone, you are able to look up stuff like on Maps and all that right?
If Its what I am thinking of..I am able to do that on my Eris(albeit, it is rooted..but..)

You in the wrong forum by any chance? We're talking about the Thundebolt here not the Droid Eris.
He was probably referring to my post
and yes I know that.
Family Guy: I was referring to your post, I just had a huge argument with a Guy in the Eris forums about this exact issue. He insisted that kaos froyo would do both. I insisted that there Is nothing that kaos could do or anyone else to make data and voice work over 3g on any Verizon phone that is currently being sold. And he insisted that his Eris would. I asked him if his wifi was on, he insisted that wifi and 3g wouldn't run at the same time. Anyway, this went on for like 20 private messages and I finally agreed that he has the only Verizon EVER Has ever sold. It could be worth millions. Again, sorry if I sound like a ****. No harm intended. Can't wait for the ****ing thunderbolt.

Yeah. You will see the Guy I ended up going through the argument with in one ofbthe kaos threads. It all started with him saying that his rooted Eris smoke his all his friends DInc's and lets be honest, if u have ever played with both, you know that's not an accurate statement. On a positive note, you guys check out some YouTube videos of the second Gen. Snapdragon processors, damn!!! They were smoking!!! There is a video on android forums or phone arena with the thunderbolt getting a 2150 with no task killer and that's pretty damn good. I know the entire stigma aelround benchmarks as I've been around here for a while(700+ post) but it takes a fast phone to get that without a "lagfix" synthetically driving up scores

Trust me, I don't want it. Samsung build quality and rfl sounds like a horrible experience. But with the release comes another 4g lte phone. I think some knowledge can be shared of the 4g. Maybe helping us TB owners progress with our 4g experience.
Personally I think it's cool to think if I had one I could just swap sim cards lol. (Sims FTW)
What do you think?

While you would hope you could just swap sim cards, it wont give you voice calling. You have to call Verizon and give them the cdma info to get it working. Now maybe once they start doing VO-LTE then we will have a sim swap situation, but there is no telling if that will be available on the bolt, claimed to be possible on the LG.

I know store reps rarely know anything true but I was told switching your sim into a different 4G Verizon phone will switch all services. Cell phone companies can now tell what kind of phones sims are in so I'd be surprised if the CDMA info didn't automatically change. But I wouldn't want that ugly charge anyway. How does samsung hit a home run on the infuse's design but release this crap at the same time?
Hmm Im very curious, Later I might swap SIMs between my moms TB and mine and see what happens, Ill test CDMA and LTE.
It was my understanding that the sim cards were only working for the one phone, and even going to another TB (like for a replacement) was requiring a new SIM card.
That was when the TB was just released, it might have changed though.

To add to what everyone else is saying, I've had a replacement and they even let me keep both phones for 5 days. I switched back and forth 20 or so times to see which one got better 4G coverage.
The catch is, if you SELL your TB, the new guy has to get a new SIM card.

All I'd be worried bout is the internet and to still play the games
I used my Sprint HTC Touch Pro II for about a year on wifi only, before I got it ported to Boost.
No difference beteeen the two that I could tell.
Matt
It really depends on where you live and why you have a phone.
I considered this when leaving my Sprint contract but decided not to for what I think is a very important reason. Emergencies. What if something happens and I need to make a call and I'm not near WIFI ? What if I'm not near anything ? What if I can't wait to go hunt down a free WIFI spot before I need to make a call ? What if I or someone else is hurt and can't wait ?
To me, mobile web and ability to play games is a much smaller concern than personal safety.
My "dumbphone" saved me from bad situations by being able to make a phone call without having to walk for miles.
If I could live without mobile data, I would go for a pre-paid minutes SIM that allows you to at least connect to cell towers if you need it. There are emergencies where it's not appropriate to call 911, yet being able to call a friend or family member will save your sorry hide if you're able to.
Ultimately, I went with T-Mobile's 100 min/unlimited tex/5Gb data plan for $30/mo because it's pretty cool to be able to stream Netflix in-between my lab and other classes and to be able to use navigation if I'm lost or just need to know something without trying to find a 24/7 coffee shop with free wifi.
I've had good luck using Groove IP for phone calls, as long as you have a Google Voice account. After some echo cancelation tweaks, and putting up with an ever-so-slight lag, it was not much different than calling with a standard phone.

I just bought the 3G version. I'm fine without having it connected if its only benefit is using it by itself if I want to leave the phone at home. Which I don't see happening.
Are there any other benefits? I have unlimited so I had to get a new line and am paying $45 for 3gb. Not sure if I even need that.
I don't want the non-3G version because I like the larger watch.
being able to receive / make calls in bt mode is nice. I have the wifi version, the wife has the 3g version, bought on swappa/ never activated.
3g version has speaker built-in, larger battery, ability to be stand alone device with separated number or remotely connected with call forwarding enabled. Im surprised that you had to take new $45 plan. I have smart watch plan for $5 a month. I dont think there is much data included in that plan but I dont use much data on watch itself ( data on phone it is a different story ). Even watching youtube on watch is a pain.

Yea / One of the adv of the 3g is the speaker. My wife has the sport (AT&T off swappa)/ I have the BT/WiFi classic. Both are nice. Personally, I looked at the classic 3g version which I could get on swappa / but it was just too big, I talked to a guy @ ATT who let me try it on. IMHO the WiFi/BT version looks more legit to a true watch.
OK thanks. Yeah I would rather have a slimmer watch than have a speaker or 3g.
