Going only wifi dropping carrier on phone. - General Topics

I've been seeing this becoming more n more popular . People dropping their carrier and just using there WiFi to connect there phone for INTERNET n such .Was just wondering if anyone here does this already and or has any good apps ideas or tips for doing this .
Thanx oh not that it matters much but i have a Motorola Droid 2 for this.

No reason it wouldn't work. I have a G1 iPhone and it still plays Pandora OK and Internet's etc.
Just took the old ATT sim out and tossed it.

Cool ya I didn't think there'd be any probs to do it. I talked to my cuz n he only uses his phone when he's on wifi has a number for texting n everything. Also thru the same app he does this with if you try there adds or something he can rack up minutes to call people? Anyone hear of this at all. All I'd be worried bout is the internet and to still play the games

I used my Sprint HTC Touch Pro II for about a year on wifi only, before I got it ported to Boost.
No difference beteeen the two that I could tell.
Matt

It really depends on where you live and why you have a phone.
I considered this when leaving my Sprint contract but decided not to for what I think is a very important reason. Emergencies. What if something happens and I need to make a call and I'm not near WIFI ? What if I'm not near anything ? What if I can't wait to go hunt down a free WIFI spot before I need to make a call ? What if I or someone else is hurt and can't wait ?
To me, mobile web and ability to play games is a much smaller concern than personal safety.
My "dumbphone" saved me from bad situations by being able to make a phone call without having to walk for miles.
If I could live without mobile data, I would go for a pre-paid minutes SIM that allows you to at least connect to cell towers if you need it. There are emergencies where it's not appropriate to call 911, yet being able to call a friend or family member will save your sorry hide if you're able to.
Ultimately, I went with T-Mobile's 100 min/unlimited tex/5Gb data plan for $30/mo because it's pretty cool to be able to stream Netflix in-between my lab and other classes and to be able to use navigation if I'm lost or just need to know something without trying to find a 24/7 coffee shop with free wifi.

I've had good luck using Groove IP for phone calls, as long as you have a Google Voice account. After some echo cancelation tweaks, and putting up with an ever-so-slight lag, it was not much different than calling with a standard phone.

$10 unlimited media max web question

i got a question for all you guys using the (dumb phone) internet on your Fuze.. i have got an unlimited messaging family plan and they said i could add the unlimited web to a dumb phone not my fuze... so i gave them the imei number off an old razr and now they have my fuze and the razr on the account on the same line... i told them i only use data on the razr and i use wifi on the fuze... so my question is (i know this has been talked about before) am i all good or can they tell the difference between when im using the razr for data or the fuze for data.... the only reason im asking this is because they know im running the fuze on the same line also and i dont know if they can tell the difference?
They can't tell the difference. I've done exactly the same thing as you stated above and I've been using it this way for months now with no issues.
your good
yea - same here - got the media max 200 and use my phone to skype, slingbox, modem when on road trip ever few weeks and log into my camera system to view live streaming videos - use about 150K KB a month on average.
You got no worries!
sDs
I have done the same thing. I have Unlimited Texting and Web for $30
Just make sure to swap phones a day before calling AT&T about your account. And make sure that they didn't take your plan off once in a while. I do streaming download mp3's, P2P and more.
thanks guys... thats what i figured... i just wanted piece of mind that i was going to be ok using it.... and i only use it for light browsing anyway... but should i switch and use the razr sometimes or am i good just using my fuze 100% of the time
you can use ur fuze 100% percent of the time. this has always been a grey area for at&t but u paying for some data is better then none at all. i too have done the same for years now. its hard to seperate who uses what in terms of kb. yes pda's use more data but with the likes of celluar video and other at&t media features, even regular devices can use a lot of data. enjoy!
I've kept the same Data Package for years. I upgraded to a Fuze from a Samsung Blackjack. The sales guy told me some BS line like, "well the Fuze requires a faster data package because the Fuze is a faster device and the data on the cheap plan can't keep up."
I actually don't have any other phone's IEMI number on my account other then my Fuze. When I call Customer service or visit a store, they say I need the bigger plan but I tell them that it is working perfectly fine and to leave it alone.
ha ha i love squeaking by... these big carriers make hella dough... i just think its bull that both plans work exactly the same but they charge you more for having a more expensive device
Now will I get 3G service on my FUZE if I gave ATT an IMEI of edge/2G dumb phone?

Probably but I think MEdia Net would be cheaper
Yeah you will get 3g no problem, as long as its in your area.. There is nothing different between the pda plan and the medianet plan..
I pitched a fit to ATT one day about it, and I was told becuase my phone had a keyboard they want me to use the more expensive plan.. I guess because I can type in websites faster lol =/
You guys who use medianet, how much data do you average a month that you use? I think I use in the range of 200-300MB, I try to limit though to stay under radar.. lol
**edit**
Also not 100% sure on this, if you will get billed extra rather, but make sure you are using wap.cingular for your gateway and not ISP.cingular.. Supposedly you could get charge every money if you use the isp one.

easy Free wifi calling?? can someone help

since the sipdroid isn't allowing non-paying people to link GV to them for right now, is there another easy option?
I have very bad phone connection at my house so im stuck with the wifi option but every other method I found seems to take like 30 steps and 5 or more programs/accounts to setup.
If you are with Tmobile, you can use Tmobile's app wifi calling. It uses you air time, but works for no cell phone reception.

I'm with verizon
If you call and complain enough verizon should give you a network repeater that will work for your house. It will use your home internet to provide a better connection.. They might try and charge you for it, but like I said with enough bickering you'll get it for free
Try this, its called "GrooVe IP" :
http://www.appbrain.com/app/groove-ip/com.gvoip
The app costs a few bucks tho, but after you buy it all you use is data, not your cell minutes, and there is no complicated set up at all besides inputting your google voice info.

I tried it. They kept having me reset my antenna radio or suggest buying the extender. They could not give it to me free or for a lower price. And when I threatened to cancel my contract, they just said "Sorry to hear that, I'll connect you over to cancel your contract."
As for the app, thanks for the suggestion. Will check into that.

Can I use my thunderbolt out of the country?

I'm going to be going on a cruise this weekend to Mexico and was wondering what I need to do with my phone, if anything. I'm pretty sure the TB is just CDMA so it won't work in such place as Mexico. I wasn't sure if it had any additional capabilities due to the sim card or if that's only for 4G.
Anyway, I would like to still use my TB for games and music while I'm there. Is there anything specific I need to do to prevent any outrageous charges from happening. Thanks in advance.
They radio off and you should be fine or put it on airplane mode just used WiFi to do emails if anything, that's what I miss from my iPhone I could take it out the country like nothing and still used it lol, oh yeah be carefull I almost lost my phone one time and people might try to steal it too

You are correct it is just CDMA however it will work in Mexico. I just came back from Cabo San Lucas and it was fine there but as jgalan says turn off your data so you are just able to make phone calls. Fyi, .50 cents per text outgoing, .05 cents incoming and .99 cents a minute for a call while in Cabo. There used to be a time where you could change your plan to unlimited global email but they don't have that now instead it's like $90 for 100mb of data and when you pro-rate that you have very little data available to you without additional charges.
Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to Grand Cayman Islands and Cozumel which is near Mexico. This is my first cruise so not exactly sure what it all means lol. Do you think it will work there? But when you say turn off data, is that as simple as pulling down my notification bar, quick settings, and turn Mobile Network off?(I'm running gingeremix 2.1).
I'm not too concerned about making calls or anything of that sort, just want to be able to play games and listen to music and not get charged anything. My best bet to just go into airplane mode? But if the phone does work there, just make sure data is off?

good to know! Is it safer to just put in airplane mode? I worry about charges and I know my whole family is going to tell me to leave my phone but I really want to bring it along. They don't understand lol.
I traveled Mexico and Central America for six months, by motorcycle, last year.
Since I was going so long, I bought a cheap Telcel phone for $20 in Mexico. Then, i had it unlocked to use anyone's SIM card. I popped local prepaid cards in while living in Guatemala. It didn't work anywhere else, for me.
I also broke my netbook early on the trip, and used my 2008 iPod Touch as my main comms device. Skype with a headset mic and I was good in hotels and Internet cafes. I would think that you'd do the same with your HTC.
yup, i just put mine in airplane mode when i'm traveling. there's really no need to text or call when you're on vacation anyway.
Couldn't you use WiFi for data if it is available?
I was in China and I just rocked airplane mode and used wifi whenever it was available
FYI, most cruise ships have WIFI on board, so theoretically you could still use your phones via WIFI. I say "theoretically," b/c the cruise i went on back in January charged out the rear for WIFI.
But like others have said, just disable the data. There is also a single button widget you can put on your home screen that will disable/enable with one touch, so that you don't have to go through the menus. Same for WIFI, airplane mode, bluetooth and GPS.

I just left my data on when I went to Cozumel. Most of the time, the ship was out of cell service, however I received emails in bulk when the ship was close to land and in service. I did not have any charges on my bill. I don't recall getting any text messages at the time though.
Anyways, have fun.
I just got back from south america and it worked great!!

[Q] Life without a carrier?

I'm rarely out of wifi range,..in fact, pretty much never unless I'm walking around on the streets of the city or traveling, and even then I can find it fairly easily. I'm wondering, has anyone gone to a mobile lifestyle without using a cell carrier, using wifi only? What is your strategy? I'm wondering if Skype or a similar service would work well enough as my mobile contact number, maybe coupled with a prepaid dumb phone for the car for emergencies. Is this a realistic idea?
In an absolute emergency all cell phones can still dial 911 no matter contract status as long as they have signal

Well if you have a Smartphone you should be able to port your current number to Google voice and make and receive calls and texts from it without requiring a plan
I have a android phone and I make calls on Wifi all the time and love it! Maybe I need to make a call at a friends house with no signal? Google Voice via Wifi To the Rescue!
You don't even need to port a number to Google Voice. They'll give you you're own number when you sign up.
If you're okay with not having a signal while you're out and about, then by all means go for it.
I'm sure it could be done but I doubt it would be very practical. Imagine going on a little trip or wanting to make a call but can't because you're just outside the wifi range. Even always being near a wi-fi connection doesn't guarantee you'll always be near one.
LOL I'm waiting for my unlock code to a HD2.
So far it's livable with GoVoice for texting and checking email, listening to music, and watching netflix.
Going to school and all that isn't really necessary for a data plan cause wifi is available and on top of that all around campus
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Try netTalk from the market works good for Out going calls on WiFi.

Doesnt matter to me, i only tether when necessary. Most the time at my house my phone goes on my wifi. This probably has something to do with those who abuse tethering by using lte for all their stuff. If you want to complain, thats where i would start, not verizon.

So pissed.
First off: !!!!
OK, there has GOT to be some sort of way around this, or at least a way to delay this from happening to one's self for a bit....
A) What about going out now and purchasing a new LTE device at full retail ahead of your upgrade date (mine is this November)? Will that grant me an extra 2 yrs of unlimited data before I am forced off?
B) And what's this I hear about buying phones directly thru the Play Store and going month-to-month with Vzw? I was hearing you will soon be able to do this and retain unlimited data this way?
There's gotta be a way....I will NOT go to shi**y At&t or Sprint or TMobile......
How many people really use 4 gigs a month? Thats what i have cox hispeed at home for. I know between cox, vzw, and sirius for car and phone, its expensive, but i have everything i need whenever and wherever i need. I know this sucks for those who abuse it, but shouldnt all around network quality be better if it is limited? Ive been unlimited since the alltel days, im not happy, but the only time i tether is once a week when at my hotel, just to have a secure connection. I can shop around next time, but as much as i travel and work in the sticks, verizon is my best option.

Some of us like myself don't have the luxury of high speed internet at home. I use a lot data because my phone is my internet connection. I don't use most of my data on 4G though because I only get it at my house and I disable it when I'm working because I'm at locations that dont have it so it eats my battery up. They won't keep it like this forever anyway. I remember when 3g came out and they charged people for data pretty much until the whole network was 3g and then by allowed it to be unlimited. Anyhow I don't really see Verizon keeping this up forever. I bet they will lose a lot of customers over this move. If they won't renew my unlimited plan I'm gone.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
But the phone as the internet connection is the problem. Thats not what it was meant for. People playing ps3 or xbox, streaming netflix, torrent downloads. Everyone who is abusing it is why its making them go this route. There is free wifi almost everywhere. People can sign up for home internet service. If your a college student, the activity center will have wifi. I hate paying $54 a month for internet at my home, but i also get up to 50 meg dl, i run all laptops, printers, and all cell phones connect as soon as its in range. If people want to leave for a more crappy network to abuse, let them. The tethering is a big reason phones are getting harder to unlock. The only unlimited in our area is sprint, but they suck outside of big cities. If forcing limits on everyone makes the network better, ill adjust to it, as i always have.

Unfortunately I have to tether for work, and also do it at home because my apt's internet selections are wayyyy too much money for the crappy speed. I am sitting at 24gbs right now for this billing cycle, and it resets on the 18th....so I am not ready to pay $220 worth of overages.....outrageous

Well, seeing as how there's nothing groundbreaking that any of the new phones can do that the Thunderbolt can't already do, I'll be using my Thunderbolt until rubber bands and epoxy can't hold it together anymore. I got mine on launch day, and other than the kickstand losing a bit of its finish, the rest of the phone is in perfect condition.
Wife is bummed about not being able to get an iphone5 once it comes out, but maybe after this fails badly for Verizon, and/or there's a big class action lawsuit, and they finally kick in the auxillary retro thrusters, I'll consider getting a new phone then. Sprint LTE is still going to suck because they're still using 1900mhz that doesn't do good building penetration, thats the reason Wimax failed.
I left sprint where I had 25% off monthly for big red.
mmarcz
I only tether mine when my wife needs to do something for work which is maybe twice a month. Even without tethering I still use 5 gb on a low month. Lots of Pandora and with a 2 year old netflix is a must for long trips, or even when waiting at the doctor or when waiting at a restraunt. If they kill unlimited for me I will either change carriers or go to a feature phone. I love my bolt, but I can move vids to my tablet for my kid and bring my zune back out for music. I'm old enough to remember life before the internet much less mobile anything, and smart enough to not get raped by big red because they want more money. Unfortunately some people are so attached to being connected 24/7 they will pay whatever to keep that data going.
