Can I use my thunderbolt out of the country? - Thunderbolt General

I'm going to be going on a cruise this weekend to Mexico and was wondering what I need to do with my phone, if anything. I'm pretty sure the TB is just CDMA so it won't work in such place as Mexico. I wasn't sure if it had any additional capabilities due to the sim card or if that's only for 4G.
Anyway, I would like to still use my TB for games and music while I'm there. Is there anything specific I need to do to prevent any outrageous charges from happening. Thanks in advance.

They radio off and you should be fine or put it on airplane mode just used WiFi to do emails if anything, that's what I miss from my iPhone I could take it out the country like nothing and still used it lol, oh yeah be carefull I almost lost my phone one time and people might try to steal it too

You are correct it is just CDMA however it will work in Mexico. I just came back from Cabo San Lucas and it was fine there but as jgalan says turn off your data so you are just able to make phone calls. Fyi, .50 cents per text outgoing, .05 cents incoming and .99 cents a minute for a call while in Cabo. There used to be a time where you could change your plan to unlimited global email but they don't have that now instead it's like $90 for 100mb of data and when you pro-rate that you have very little data available to you without additional charges.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to Grand Cayman Islands and Cozumel which is near Mexico. This is my first cruise so not exactly sure what it all means lol. Do you think it will work there? But when you say turn off data, is that as simple as pulling down my notification bar, quick settings, and turn Mobile Network off?(I'm running gingeremix 2.1).
I'm not too concerned about making calls or anything of that sort, just want to be able to play games and listen to music and not get charged anything. My best bet to just go into airplane mode? But if the phone does work there, just make sure data is off?

good to know! Is it safer to just put in airplane mode? I worry about charges and I know my whole family is going to tell me to leave my phone but I really want to bring it along. They don't understand lol.

I traveled Mexico and Central America for six months, by motorcycle, last year.
Since I was going so long, I bought a cheap Telcel phone for $20 in Mexico. Then, i had it unlocked to use anyone's SIM card. I popped local prepaid cards in while living in Guatemala. It didn't work anywhere else, for me.
I also broke my netbook early on the trip, and used my 2008 iPod Touch as my main comms device. Skype with a headset mic and I was good in hotels and Internet cafes. I would think that you'd do the same with your HTC.

yup, i just put mine in airplane mode when i'm traveling. there's really no need to text or call when you're on vacation anyway.

Couldn't you use WiFi for data if it is available?

I was in China and I just rocked airplane mode and used wifi whenever it was available

FYI, most cruise ships have WIFI on board, so theoretically you could still use your phones via WIFI. I say "theoretically," b/c the cruise i went on back in January charged out the rear for WIFI.
But like others have said, just disable the data. There is also a single button widget you can put on your home screen that will disable/enable with one touch, so that you don't have to go through the menus. Same for WIFI, airplane mode, bluetooth and GPS.

I just left my data on when I went to Cozumel. Most of the time, the ship was out of cell service, however I received emails in bulk when the ship was close to land and in service. I did not have any charges on my bill. I don't recall getting any text messages at the time though.
Anyways, have fun.

I just got back from south america and it worked great!!

Using an unlocked Inspire in Europe

I will be travelling to Europe in the next few weeks, and have some questions about using my inspire.
I have already unlocked my phone by calling AT&T and getting the code, then inserting another SIM, and entering the code. So I am good to go in that regard.
When I get to Europe, I just buy a SIM card and put it in the phone, which will allow me to make calls. What about overseas calls?
What about data? Do the SIM cards allow you to access data? Will I get 4G, or be restricted to Edge?
Honestly, I am more interested in Data than voice, as I am more likely to send/receive e-mails that call.
Would I be better off signing up temporarility with one of the AT&T international plans?
Thanks!

Research the area you are going and find which the carriers are and see who's related to who. If you find a carrier thats somewhat related to att you may get 3g or 4g, but T-Mobile you'll get edge. Also call or get in contact with carrier and see what they have, dunno how it works overseas cuz i never really been overseas with my phone. Hope it helps and if anyone see anything I mentioned that's wrong you're welcome to A) correct me and B) call me mean evil names =D

Bluizzo you ninja turtle you. Lol just a slight correction. Europe uses different bands than us. So no 3g, just good old edge. Though I think I saw someone post that their country used our bands somewhere. But generally they use the 900/2100 for 3g.
I would get a prepaid sim from a euoropean carrier. They have way better deals that put our prices to shame.

Yeah there are some countries that use the same bands

The main countries that uses the same ATT band are Canada and Australia for 3G. The rest use the same bands Tmobile uses.
Thanks for the info. Looks like I will be picking up a SIM when I get there.
Hopefully my reply is not too late.....
I have been travelling to London for work for the last several months and have used O2 as the carrier on my Inspire. I was able to get a pay as you go SIM with a data plan. You will need to manually enter the APN information get the data and MMS working properly. I found the APN info by doing a web search.
And yes the service was Edge and not 3G.

THANKS!!! I am in Ireland, and picked up a vodafone SIM card. Could get voice, but not data. Did a web search for APN, and found the APN on the vodafone site. Now I've got working internet. It is EDGE (I've got a G with up/down arrows), but is fine for what I need.

EDGE should be an "E". "G" is GPRS which is like 1G or worse, but hey, if it works for you, then great, but you should be able to get EDGE with the proper APN.

Can't seem to get EDGE, just the G. Which is OK, since all I am doing is checking e-mails.
However, my battery life has improved dramatically. I don't even need the powerskin case here. Battery lasts all day, no problem.
It's incredible how much battery is used by a fast network.

Indeed. Especially if it needs to boost the radio for reception. I was camping a few months back on the fringe of coverage area. The first day, I left mobile networks on and it kept going in and out of coverage and my battery was dead within about 14 hours. The next day, with a fresh charge from my car, I turned off mobile networks and I still had 80% battery by the end of the day.

[Q] Is there a way to force an AT&T Infuse to roam on T-Mobile???

OK, I don't care about the data and stuff my phone is mostly connected to Wi-Fi. I just need to be able to make calls and I don't even get a bar on EDGE. So is there a way to force my Infuse to roam on T-Mobiles network, they have a tower right down the road. Phone is rooted and has Infused v2.1.0 rom but when I go to the network selection it "sees" T-Mobile but when I try to connect it says: Your SIM unable to connect to this network. Thanks in advance for the help!
Are you using a T-Mobile sim?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
No, I just figure since there is no signal and I do get roaming with my plan wouldn't it just be able to connect if there is a lack in coverage? If not there has to be a way to... Right?
If the phone can pick up any bit of AT&T signal, you can't roam, and your area also has to have a roaming agreement with T-Mobile to roam.
If your phone is unlocked why not get a T-Mobile sim? Prepaid is cheap if you need the service. Roaming can be expensive if you don't have a roaming option.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Rats! well looks like the only options are to get a T-Mo SIM or call and complain or hopefully wait maybe in a couple of years after the buy-out they will light up that tower so I can use it...
Thanks for replying.
Yeah there's a lot of places where AT&T and T-Mo have no roaming whatsoever.
For example, at least back in 2008, putting a T-Mo SIM into a phone anywhere within 15 miles of my apartment would cause that phone's IMEI to get blacklisted by the towers for 15-20 minutes, even after putting the AT&T SIM back in. (I had a friend that was on T-Mo - put her phone into my Tilt and it didn't work. Put my SIM back into the Tilt and it STILL didn't work and stayed that way for 15-20 minutes.)
Whats weird is I got a message from them saying that they had lit up a new tower 5 miles east of Oregon City... a lot of help that does in the area I live in. COME ON! I've used that Mark the spot app and called (even from other accts cuz I know they have to get enough complaints) and the service still sucks! But before u tell me to change providers the only other with decent service is T-Mo plus I'm on a contract with 5 different phones with all staggered contract end dates.
VENTING: One other thing that kinda irks me is how they know when u take the sim and put it in a data phone then the automagically charge u the most expensive data plan when u only use 10-20 MB's then when u call them to change it to the cheaper plan they give you the run around...
You can get an at&t micro cell to boost you're signal. It works off your internet/cable router. Works pretty good, but if it switches from micro cell back to data or vice versa can cause dropped calls. Just an option.
this is why i want this attmobile to go through! able to access att + tmobile towers!

Got charged $150 by T-mobile for WiFi call roaming.....

Was in France, used T-mobile WiFi calling feature and got billed just like I haven't used it at all..... THIS IS NUTS....Is T-Mobile trying to rip me off or did WiFi calling not work on CM ROM. I obviously know how to use it and even showed my friend who by the way did NOT get charged.
So yes, WiFi calling icon showed its active and connected while I made the calls....

I don't think WiFi calling works in air plane mode
If you turn your phone in airplane mode, then turn on WiFi, it should work.

I did. They say they cannot guaranty free Wifi-calling roaming....and the only thing they can offer is $80 credit with 2-year contract extension.\
I am just too tired to argue.....it says on Tmobile website NO ROAMING CHARGES, I asked to see Terms and Condition for Wifi-calling where they dont guaranty it and rep says they dont have it.....
I have no proof that I used Wifi calling and all they see are my calls without any Wifi-calling.....
The Wi-Fi calling does not work in airplane mode... Skype, text plus work strictly in Wi-Fi with ap mode on. Wi-Fi calling requires a cell connection to register. I just finished a deployment in the middleast and used the Wi-Fi calling feature, no extra charges. I'm rooted using weapon gingerbread.

oh well, i extended my contract and got my $80 back. i figured i am probably gonna get One S anyway, so now I dont have a choice and will be buying One S when it comes out since i am already under contract.
I don't have WiFi calling because I am not with T-Mobile. Instead, I use airplane mode with WiFi turned on and use Skype which gaurantees that there's no roaming charges. That will work for any phone which has WiFi and Skype anywhere in the world.
WiFi calling uses your plan's minutes, unless you strictly went WiFi with the Groove IP+Google Voice route. I'm not surprised they whooped you with an extravagant phone bill from you "roaming" internationally.
I've used WiFi calling in Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the Philippines. I've never got a single charge from T-Mobile.

thats how its supposed to be. i have NO idea what happened to me. i only see 2 reasons: 1. problem with custom ROM or 2. T-mobile has to actually enable Wifi-calling on their side in order to avoid roaming charges.
of course maybe its just a glitch in the system. after all how many people use this to avoid roaming fees....very few, so i really have ZERO proof.

One way to figure it out without costing you $$$ is to take your phone to T-Mobile and use one of their store's SIM cards to try out the setup you used for WiFi Calling. If you discover the cause for being charged while using WiFi Calling, post it here.
That's why I'm always careful to not enable any roaming with data, hits you hard. :/

Going only wifi dropping carrier on phone.

I've been seeing this becoming more n more popular . People dropping their carrier and just using there WiFi to connect there phone for INTERNET n such .Was just wondering if anyone here does this already and or has any good apps ideas or tips for doing this .
Thanx oh not that it matters much but i have a Motorola Droid 2 for this.
No reason it wouldn't work. I have a G1 iPhone and it still plays Pandora OK and Internet's etc.
Just took the old ATT sim out and tossed it.

Cool ya I didn't think there'd be any probs to do it. I talked to my cuz n he only uses his phone when he's on wifi has a number for texting n everything. Also thru the same app he does this with if you try there adds or something he can rack up minutes to call people? Anyone hear of this at all. All I'd be worried bout is the internet and to still play the games
I used my Sprint HTC Touch Pro II for about a year on wifi only, before I got it ported to Boost.
No difference beteeen the two that I could tell.
Matt
It really depends on where you live and why you have a phone.
I considered this when leaving my Sprint contract but decided not to for what I think is a very important reason. Emergencies. What if something happens and I need to make a call and I'm not near WIFI ? What if I'm not near anything ? What if I can't wait to go hunt down a free WIFI spot before I need to make a call ? What if I or someone else is hurt and can't wait ?
To me, mobile web and ability to play games is a much smaller concern than personal safety.
My "dumbphone" saved me from bad situations by being able to make a phone call without having to walk for miles.
If I could live without mobile data, I would go for a pre-paid minutes SIM that allows you to at least connect to cell towers if you need it. There are emergencies where it's not appropriate to call 911, yet being able to call a friend or family member will save your sorry hide if you're able to.
Ultimately, I went with T-Mobile's 100 min/unlimited tex/5Gb data plan for $30/mo because it's pretty cool to be able to stream Netflix in-between my lab and other classes and to be able to use navigation if I'm lost or just need to know something without trying to find a 24/7 coffee shop with free wifi.
I've had good luck using Groove IP for phone calls, as long as you have a Google Voice account. After some echo cancelation tweaks, and putting up with an ever-so-slight lag, it was not much different than calling with a standard phone.

Galaxy S4 missing calls, not receiving calls - Compromised solution

Symptom: I just upgrade from iphone 4s to Galaxy S4, after about a month use, I missed 4 calls from my friends. The phone did not ring at all, and there was no missed call in the log. This is a very serious problem. someone say she almost broke up with her bf just because of this,
Solution:For now I found the solution is to turn off the LTE by go to setting=>Connections=>More networks=>Mobile networks=>Network mode and then choose "GSM/WCDMA". Then you will not miss a call.
Compromise: your data speed is reduced to 4G HSAP+. But if you have 200MB plan and only receive emails like me it does not matter(poor solution for people who has unlimited or 2gb+ data plan), plus by using 4G HSAP+ instead of 4G LTE you get better battary life.
Explaination: I lives in Pullman WA where we have LTE here. Some of my friends using a LTE capable phone (iphone 5, other GS4, nokia 920) also met this problem sometimes (this happens totally random or say I cannot conclude a situation when this will happen). The general idea is that LTE can only handle data transfer but not voicecalls (you can make a call with the LTE on and you will see that your phone swith from LTE to 4G), so if you are using the LTE network and your phone is connected to wifi (at this time your phone is using wifi data not LTE and then you are not connected to the tower at all, this is my guess, I am ME engineer not a communication engineer) and it's on sleep mode (these situations are my assumption) you may miss the phone call. But when you wake up your phone and ask your friends to make test call. you will receive the call.
If you read this post, many people with GS3 has this problem before:

and with iphone 5:
forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1489651
and their solution is to turn off the LTE through a complicated process(we have such function build in the phone, :laugh,
I put this here to help people who has the same problem, but I also wish ATT can fix this problem ASAP because we are paying for LTE speed. So if you have the same problem with your LTE phone please leave a post here and this could arrise the attention.

Yes, they give me a new sim and my old sim stop working after they activate the new sim. But I put that new sim into the iphone 4s first before I put it into the GS4, Will this cause the problem? Do I need to ask them to issue me a new sim?
Thanks for the reply
Probably not. If you got a new LTE sim then that should not be the problem.

It takes att about a week to fix it when they received enought complains! that happens in my case, when you call them to report LTE network tower is down, they think you a idiot! Telling or guiding you how to setup your phone! There's nothing wrong with your phone! The lte tower is down!

It takes att about a week to fix it when they received enought complains! that happens in my case, when you call them to report LTE network tower is down, they think you a idiot! Telling or guiding you how to setup your phone! There's nothing wrong with your phone! The lte tower is down!

You're a moron. That would be just fine if your phone was left in one spot. But a moving phone that shifts towers......yeah your logic is completely flawed. There is either a problem in the radio firmware or the hardware itself...IN THE PHONE

Ummmm but yeah dumbass we're not talking about a whole network outage.
Everyone would be dropping calls/texts in your scenario but that's not what this is about.
My wife's phone misses calls/texts randomly while moving and connecting to different towers over a 140 mile radius, she has a GS4. Now here's the part that makes your statement dumb. While this is going on, I receive calls/texts perfectly fine on a GS5 sitting right next to her the whole time.
It's a device issue, not a network issue. Something so simple normal monkeys can figure out.

Wow are you just born a total moron or was it a learned response. It's still relevant if it happened on a new phone purchased in February plus there is no definite fix without sacrificing quality. Don't assume you know everything...just makes you look more the ass than you already are.
Just man up and accept your defeat, you lost with your original post I replied to in the first place. Only kids get mad when they are shown how ultimately wrong they are.

i experienced this before.
this is because LTE network is down in your area, that is why!
it' like you connected to your router wifi at home, you pulled the internet cable. but your phone still connected to the wifi. it just wont let you surf web since there is no internet connection, but your phone still connected to your home wifi router.
know what i trying to say?

why would you want to turn off LTE?
there is a code for Note3 that let you turn off LTE and stay at 3G. why would you want to stay in 3G instead of LTE ?

From what I have read here I wanted to turn it off as a troubleshooting step and see if it would fix my not ringing problem.
