Will the droid charge ever be supported by Cyanogen?
Reason I ask is because I just picked up the droid incredible 2, which is a great phone and even better on battery life than any other android phone I've had before (evo, nexus s), and I'm still on my 14 day trial but I'm considering the droid charge. I love the amoled screen on sammy, makes all other screens look washed out, and the vanilla look and speed. So cyanogen for droid charge ever? How are the roms without TW and how is battery life on the charge?
Last question, how does the charge feel in the pocket? I remember my evo was like a brick, and the nexus s was like nothing compared to it. The droid inc 2 is about the same as the nexus s. Thanks in advance.

I just don't like TW. It really lags the phone, comapred to the nexus s which has the same hardware but stock vanilla. That is why I'm asking about CM7, but I'm sure there are other roms out there which has taken the TW out of it right? I'm just in the fence between this phone and the droid inc 2.
Let me try to give some input on the droid inc 2 and maybe you guys can give me some feedback on what your experiences are with the charge.
-very light, feels great in the pocket
-sense, a couple or roms being developed now with addition of 3.0 sense but I can live without
-no 4g, not that I have 4g in my city, but it is offered at some places I usuallly go to
-already has a beta cm7, which runs nearly perfect, very stable
-very fast phone, browsing the web and opening up apps
-battery life is best from my experience, can easily get by with one day with moderate/heavy use with leftover juice
I'm just trying to decide wich one to keep with the help of people who already have the charge and can talk about the pros and cons of the phone. Thanks again.
If the 4g is not that important to you, then your current phone has better hardware except for the screen.
I personally don't know how I survived without 4g for this long.

I have the Charge primarily for the screen. After all, any time im using the phone, im looking at the screen, making it the most used piece of hardware on the device besides the radios. Its plenty fast for me as well.

Im telling you that super amoled really spoils you. That is the one thing that is really making me be in the middle between the two. After having one and going back to a LCD is hard, really looks washed out, plain and boring.

agreed...4 g is faster than my wifi right now. Screen is SICK. Can't go to a bionic from this, only a 4g GSII. If it exists.
I hate to say it but I'm getting the d3. I'm going to sell this phone. I hate how slow it is and knowing samsung updates won't come fast leaks are great but leaks are leaks. 4g is killing my battery and I'm always on wifi anyways. And oh who doesn't miss the keyboard. Locked isn't a problem im sure it will be unlocked the same way the atrix was and motorola left fastboot on it which means there is more to come. Just my opinion and i know the trolls will come.

r2DoesInc has a Charge and is going to work on porting OMGB and OMFGB to it, so we'll have at least those for AOSP ROMs then. Once one AOSP ROM is done and working, it should be easier to port others to the phone then as well. It will happen at some point, the only problem is, it could take a while to happen.
To put things in context, the Fascinate, which came out about 10 months ago and is extremely similar to the Charge specs-wise, has just -- literally in the past few days -- gotten more-or-less fully functional CM7.
As far as the Incredible 2 goes, it's a decent but thoroughly underwhelming phone considering it came out so recently. Single-core, no 4G, okay but not great screen...it really is more comparable to the Fascinate than to the Charge or Droid X2.
Honestly, if you have a choice, you'd be better off waiting for the Droid Bionic, which will finally mate a dual-core processor with 4G.
i tell you 4g is so sweet. I came from a dx and i knew the bonic was coming out when i bought the charge. I dont regret at all upgrading. As i hated Blur and there screens are bad. TouchWiz is not that bad to me. I think you will be very happy with the charge. I am rooted and on humble 1.3 and voodoo kernel and my benchmarks are as high as my droid x on Gingerbread. I dont see qhy everyone loves Motorola after owning my charge.
Good luck buddy

I am so very confused. I have the droid charge. I had a droid 1 for the past year, I rooted it a hundred times or so with all different roms. it was very easy. I cannot for the life of me find on here or droid forums how to root the charge with no other changes. I guess there isnt a way yet? I really LOVE 4G. I have seen speeds up to 12 Mbs. And twice that fast posted by others like in Dallas area. I am a truck driver I am in and out of 4G areas all the time. I have a situation where I had to pay for the tethering right now my son was in a terrible crash and we have been in the Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville since Sat. $30 for 2Gigs...ugh. I need root. lol. I have searched and searched. I do not understand the oodin method. I really have tried to find what im looking for just unable right now. ty in advance

Yeah, you definitely have to be willing to flash a rom to this phone, Sammy's stock software is awful. I don't think I could own the thing without a custom rom and lagfix applied.

how do these roms run compared to stock? I have seen the pictures but no videos, maybe somebody can post one and compare it to something else. Honestly the droid inc 2 has got pretty much the same specs as the charge exept no 4g and more ram. The thing that I love about the charge is that it will be future proof with the 4g and the lovely screen.
How about the droid 3? anybody seen one yet? It just seems appealing because of the dual core and front camera, but I would hate the extra bulkiness from the keyboard. So hard to decide on a phone which will be a solid phone for the 2 years.

Personally, I like the Incredible's track pad, hated the Eris' /but I can certainly function without it. when you think about it, it's a touch screen phone.. the track pad is just taking up valuable real estate.
I do love the Thunderbolt. It isn't what I hoped it would be. and I wasn't sure about the kick stand. but it looks really well built. And I'm not in a 4G area, so paying for it may not be worth it unfortunately. Hopefully they adequate the pricing so it's doable.

Funny I figured Verizon would've called it a Droid at least. The trackpad really would just take up space on the already large device. it fits well on the incredible though. i had a droid x for a while and I felt like it needed a trackpad even though it was so large. there was definitely room for it on the X

Put It this way... There are justified and explainable reasons for the lack of dualcore. If you think about, Qualcomm is really the best CPU on the market, if HTC would've debuted a Dualcore Snapdragon, everyone would've disregarded the tegra and all its mobile counterparts, minus the xoom of course =)
In Addition... There are NO APPLICATIONS or Android itself is NO WHERE NEAR the use of two cores and hyper threading. This should pick up after Q3 maybe even Q4 when the "Devs and Engineers" fine tune the use of all this great hardware.
For now, the thunderbolt is the best machine. Dual Mics plus the media mics by the camera and speaker as the Droid x had make this a Beast over that chump called "Droid Bionic" garbage. 768MB Ram, Second Gen Snapdragon, Plus the dev support on this makes it insane...

Please answer if you have had both so I can get good advice. The inspire battery isnt a big deal because I can buy another one. Best Buy carries the Atrix for $99.99 on contract, so if you're for hardware or raw performance I'd go the Atrix path. I personally don't like the Inspire, so I guess that discounts my opinion, but I'd get an Atrix, root it, and maybe flash a custom ROM on it if you don't like MotoBlur or any of options that ADW or Launcher Pro have to offer.
I have the atrix and to be honest with you ... I hate it. Just try and wait it out for for a better phone to be released.
I'd personally say Atrix. It is quite sluggish at times but im sure it can be solved with a software update. the reason is that you will be future proofed and also 1080p recording is in the works.
Thanks guys. Things is I can't wait for a better phone because I have to make my decision Tuesday. Please, more opinions

I have an Atrix, and I love it. Those that say the phone is sluggish don't know what they're talking about or have a ton of rouge apps running in the background. Just use an alternate launcher and you shouldnt have any complaints.
I would only recommend you go for the inspire if you consider camera quality a top priority or care about the locked bootloader on the atrix (which has almost been worked around anyway).

I have THE Inspire and am VERY happy with it. I was between the two myself and the deciding factors for me were the larger screen, no motoblur, and the awesome development community. If you are into modding your phone, the Inspire has it hands down. My Inspire is running @ 1.4ghz and is noticeably faster than the Atrix's that two of my coworkers have. If you aren't going to root it, or just want to retheme it, than IMO it's just a choice between features.

I have the inspire and love this phone. Its my second android phone after being with the iphone for the past few years.O and Its free at best buy this week with a new two year or upgrade with 2 yr.
Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm gonna go with the atrix for 2 reasons. First is gorilla glass. I'm known for keeping a lighter or keys in the same pocket as my phone and I've scratched many screens. Also I hate screen protectors. Second is actually 2 reasons in one. Sound quality and the fact that the only thing that drags me towards htc and sense is the evo. I actually have the evo,and its one sexy beast. But I feel like the inspire isn't even up to the evos standards when it comes to the epicness of the phone. The evo set a high standard and still after over a year holds its ground against any other phone on the market. People are still paying 200 dollars for it with a new contract, but the inspire just don't seem to get that much hype. I really like htc's builds and how sturdy there devices are,but I'm no stranger to the plastic feel. I've owned nothing but samsungs ( ) so the atrix wouldn't be a problem on that end. The only thing(s) that is still giving me doubt is the fact that I really wanted to upgrade to a 4.3 inch screen, and that with the atrix it looks as if everything is really tiny, even the keyboard. Please,if anyone has had both, tell me why you decided to go with what phone.

Just updating here for people who may be stuck in the position I was but I went with the inspire, and folks until you hold it in your hands, you wouldn't know its awsomeness. I stated it wasn't as good as the EVO,but I have both and this thing blows the EVO away. And as far as battery life,im a heavy user and I make it through the day off a charge. That's with very heavy usage. I did tweak a few things but nothing I even noticed. Brightness down to 47% and turned off HTC mail sync and news sync. Saves a lot. Great phone here, bada ba ba,I'm loving it

I am thinking about trading my Mytouch4g for a G2x.....i also have a dell streak 5
In everyone's opinion, which is the better phone? I know the G2x's specs are ridiculous compared to the other 2, but I have heard of many issues with the G2x.
This G2x is unlocked and rooted running 2.3.3. So I imagine that most of the bad bugs are worked out already.
So basically, I am wondering about other people's input on this trade. Should I go from the Mytouch4g to the G2x? Or should I just stick with my Dell Streak 5?
I made this switch. But I was forced to cause my MT4G died after I dropped it in water. Yes G2x is faster and has a bigger screen but in terms of development I think MT4G being an HTC is a better phone.
CM7 worked a lot better on it than G2x although G2x isn't that bad. It is still stuck on 2.6.32 kernel though, while the MT4G kernel is up to .35 and easily devvable.
Spec-wise, they are about the same. Shouldn't be much of a difference except for the keyboard.

What are the thoughts on this? Is it going to be a better idea to root it and install a custom ROM? Are the problems more prevelant on the stock ROMs?
He said it has been fine since he got a new one. But that it had many problems before when he had one with 2.2.2. I just dont want to trade for some buggy non-functional phone!

I got a MT4G and my wife got the G2x. After playing with her phone for half a day, I went back to the store and traded my MT4G in. I love the G2x.
Very true about development. If you are flash happy and want to change ROMs often...stick with the MT4G.
I'm in the same boat as the op, and I'm really tempted to get a g2x, as I'm a bit of a tech addict and can't wait for the gs2. On the other hand, the mt4g isn't terrible. It's stable, and development wise a lot better than the g2x. It runs pretty much 99% of what I want it to run very well.
The development is the only thing keeping me from jumping right now.

I am getting antsy to get a new phone to replace my MT4G, but I do not want to spend a ton like I would on a sensation or the Galaxy 2. I was thinking an older dual core might be a good start.
I like to tinker, but not overly flash happy. Just want stability and decent battery life, and the typical things like good signal reception and call quality.
Why do people always bring up GSII? I doubt you'll notice any differences in real world performance... Just get a G2x. Development isn't that bad... But if you MUST HAVE Sense, stick with the MT4G.
The GSII is a great phone... If it is anything like the first one then it will be even better with cyanogen or any custom ROM, same with the sensation. I don't use Sense often, but it isn't that bad, especially the newer versions.
The biggest difference will be battery life. From what I am hearing, the new SOCs are much easier on the battery, so all things being equal, the sensation or GSII will have much better battery life even with higher use cases.
That is why the choice is more difficult. Besides... us tinkers (aka the rooting community) will never be satisfied long with the same phone. After about a year, it is time to look into something new. Sometimes we can't afford the latest and greatest so we look for the best bang for our buck we can.
As to a new g2x owner (3 weeks) I love this phone, bought it brand new from the store and it works flawlessly, I flashed weapons GB build and using fauxes over clocked kernel.
In other words, i'm in love with it.
Hi, all. I currently have an Epic 4G. But it is broken, (mic and phone speaker don't work at all) so I am entitled to a warranty replacement. This was an Asurion replacement so I talked to them. I asked them to give me a Nexus S 4G instead and I got it without too much problem. The rep I was talking to said he couldn't do it but his boss said yes without hesitation (maybe I should have asked for an Epic Touch 4G instead and seen what happened but I digress). If I am lucky the phone will arrive tomorrow but probably the next day.
Anyway, I am hoping that I can get some advice on this phone. How to root it? What Roms/Kernels are the best. Ect.
Thank you very much!
About which roms or kernels are the best, there's not an easy answer to that. Being the developer phones, the nexus line has a lot of people working on the source. This is good and bad, because there are a lot of cool things you can get on your phone, but a lot of stuff will not work. Often times there will be a tradeoff between getting bleeding edge updates and having a stable system.
That being said, NANDroid backup is your best friend. Before every flash, backup your entire phone's state. Then if nothing works, restore your backup and it is like nothing ever happened.
Well to start off, and always a good impression, is to search for the first request. Shouldn't be hard to find a thread about rooting a NS4G or a YouTube video. Just looks better on you.
As far as ROMS go, well Cyanogenmod is a well respected name in that realm. Also you could pick from any of the other hundreds of ICS Roms. Just make sure you get it from the Nexus S "4G" forum.
Dig around in the forums. Shouldn't take long to find a thread with the topics you are asking about.
Good luck and welcome to the Nexus club.

Unlock boot loader as soon as possible because it will erase everything on your phone including SD card.
As far as ROMs you've gotta use a ICS ROM. There's lot of great GB ROMs but you're not getting a Nexus to be stuck on last year's OS. CM9 Is currently my favorite. Lots of other ROMs have more tweaks like quad and octo locks but CM9 is the smoothest for me. But try em all, why not?
As far as kernels there are a lot of good options. Personally I like Steve Garden's latest. Has the best colors without using Voodoo so there's no annoying green flash when locking. But again, try em all!
Oh... and how to root? Well, it's basically "fastboot oem unlock" "fastboot flash recovery whateverrecoveryyouchoose.img" and flash the SU binary in recovery. Or just flash a ROM.
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE* (relax, it's a signature)

It is all depend on how much budget you have. If you have a high budget, I would say look at the Galaxy Nexus instead. Otherwise, the normal Nexus S is good enough. There aren't many 4G carrier available, and you won't need 4G in daily life.
I come from an epic. No regrets whatsoever. The only wins the epic has over the ns4g are the better camera, and speaker. Also the epic seems to get better 3g and 4g reception. Other than that everything else is so much better. Development included.

+1 to what rush said. I had to bring my epic in for repairs but they didn't have any refurbs so the sent me a nexus. Check out shabby's one click root and there is also a one click unroot. Qbking has some good videos of various roms also.

Great read! I too am a new comer here, coming from the misfit phone Droid X2, which was a decent phone, but with no unlockable bootloader, will never reach its potential, but we had great devs that made some decent roms with what they had. But anyways I'm really liking this phone so far, & with unlockable bootloader & so many roms, I'm feelin all goody like a fat kid in a candy store! Lol And seems like a good community here

GummyNexus is good, I just don't like the visual changes. I would go with Bigxie's ICS Rom. That, combined with the Matrix 14.5 kernel set to lulzactive is perfect. 9 hours unplugged and I was at 86%.

oICS v43 is good too, but I am thinking of giving gummy another try. I've been hearing that it's doing quite well and oICS hasn't been updated in awhile(although it is reportedly still in development.)
great phone! im coming from a evo 4g and didn't want to use my upgrade so I bought this phone off ebay. Loving it so much. I think I'm stuck on nexus phones from here on out (^_^)
Yeah advice is get an epic touch lol better phone. Better battery. But its not free like the nexus is right now. My advice, get free nexus from sprint online and then just grab the galaxy nexus when it drops later.

I saw this on the galaxy tab 7.7 forum that ICS is being released for the tab.

Isn't this supposed to give us a possible chance at ICS since they share similar hardware??

The Charge really is way underpowered. All the later phones are much more powerful. They're not going to ever put any effort into this wimpy phone. FP5 was just the fix for the embarrassing crap software they were running on it before. Just run Tweaked 3.0 and keep it til you can get something better.

This.
The Charge has always been a good phone, the problem is they gave the phones before and after it better hardware/software. Even the Thunderbolt which was released before the Charge is supposed to get some ICS love(official) and has ROMs for ICS. The Charge has always been over looked and under appreciated. If it had been given proper hardware and a lil lovin' it would be right below the Nexus. At this point it is ridiculous that Samsung won't just give up the RIL so that some more can be done to try and bring the Charge back from the dead. All I gotta say is thank god Dwitherell stuck it out and made the Charge more of what it should have been.
I have a question, if this is a slightly refreshed Nexus S, and the Nexus S can run both ICS and JB, then why can't this phone? From a hardware perspective, I know Samsung obviously doesn't want to spend the time and money to create ICS for their bastard child phone.

It's not about phone capabilities, really. It's about 2 things. First, this is a limited user base device. Second, this is a skinned device, and there's not enough room in the system partition for the skinned version of ICS or JB to run.
AOSP ICS and JB do run, and from what little I messed with CM9 on the Charge, it ran quite nicely. There's no mobile data with it though, because the RIL has proven to be tough to crack, but as far as hardware capabilities, it can run stock...just not the TouchWiz skinned versions.
My DC is wifi only and I would love to play with ics or jb on here.
