Help a noob - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just got my shift and perm rooted it. I was going to install a ROM and when I went in to the recovery to do so I just got an image of a phone with an "!" above it. I assume it's because I have no recovery at all installed. So I downloaded one and can't for the life of me figure out how to install it on my phone. I'm not at all familiar with bootloader or fastboot and every thread I find seems to be using those and I don't have the slightest idea how. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need to install a custom recovery. Pull your battery then boot up your phone go to the market install ROM Manager open Rom manager then tap Flash Clockworkmod recovery let it do its thing then scroll down and immediately make a backup of your stock rom. You will need it at some point in the future, trust me!

Thank you! You saved me from pulling all the hair out of my head.

No prob , also d/l from market a file manager. Estrong's is a free one and Root Explorer is a paid app, there others pretty much personal taste . One other sugg. connect phone to your comp. when the pop-up comes up tap disk drive and copy that backup somewhere safe on your comp.

Captivate doesn't Work.

So I powered the phone down for class, and when I turned it back on three hours later, it hung at the boot animation, and then eventually just went to a black screen. Battery is at 100%, I had it charged that morning. Is there any way to fix my phone?
Need a little more info from you. Did you root, install any lag fixes, did you make a nandroid backup? One way that's sure to fix it is the Odin One Click Downloader listed in the development section of the Captivate forums, its always worked for me, but if you didn't have a backup it will wipe your settings and info and you'll be starting from scratch.
I was rooted, I was in the process of the 'one-step lag fix' when I realized busybox was giving me an error. It was version 1.18.1 instead of 1.17.1. So I went back to the recovery menu thing and reinstalled packages.
I have no clue what Nandroid is honestly. I'll look into Odin, but is there a Mac version?
As far as I know there isn't a Mac version of Odin yet....once you root download Rom Manager from the market place and then have it install the Clockwork Mod Recovery image, once thats done if your rom is stable use Backup current rom. I'd check if theres a wiki for Mac users, I use windows so I have no clue. I know you can download a new version of busybox installer from the market that lets you choose which version of busybox to install now. The ext2 lag fixes are pretty unstable and have caused some headaches (worked fine for me, but I still reverted back to normal). I'll post back later if I figure out a way for you to return to stock with a mac, but you might be able to just flash one of the stock roms through rom manager now after you change its name to update.zip, or flash one of the new roms that root for you (I've had pretty good luck with those so far).
Captivate doesnt work
I don't know if we have the same problem, but i got stuck on that black screen and wont boot up. I was able to recover it by doing that one click root for samsung captivate. (check it out on one of the threads) Just run the one click root/unroot it doesnt matter. Now when you're on the phone recovery screen instead of clicking "reinstall something" go to delete data, click it. as well as delete cache. then go up to do a reboot. Thats it, Worked for me hope it works for you!
p.s. Don't know if you can do it on a mac though, or you can always borrow a friends pc.

My computer doesn't recognize my captivate at all, so I don't know how I can put an update.zip on the phone.

I'm gonna try the delete cache/data.
You're most likely going to have to do an Odin flash.
If you are doing the ext2 fix, and busybox throws you an error, there are instructions that say run Remove to back off and fix busybox before rebooting, or this happens.
does anyone know exactly what the 'delete all user data' does?
Does it just delete downloaded apps and your contacts and music and stuff? Or will it like completely destroy my phone?
The only way to completely destroy your phone, is with physical violence, immolation, etc.
so it just goes back to a stock ROM without downloaded apps/root/whatnot?

Odin will return the phone to an out of the box state, delete all user info will just remove you settings and personal info. I've read in other forums that you don't even need to download drivers to get your phone connected to a Mac, have you gone into settings>applications>development and enabled usb debugging? Try that and then plug your phones usb cable in. The Odin One Click Downloader thread also says you don't need drivers for Mac. I asked in the wiki thread for someone to post some info for Mac users, maybe it'll help.
EDIT: Also I know its a pain but you can get Astro File Manager from the market (free) and go into Preferences and enable browser download, then just download the update.zip on your phone and move it around and rename it with Root Explorer (a paid app but worth the money) that should let you flash roms and so on from your own phone after rooting of course.

[Q] Can't load any ROM's---PLZ HELP

So i am running cm6 currently on phone. I seem to recall erasing the stock rom when installing another program on the phone as this is what it asked me to do (can't remember which program). Anyways I have downloaded at least 5 other roms I wanted to check out and everytime I tried to load one it says E:/ bad and something about the directory. I can run cm6 with no problem and it always lets me restore into my nandroids. Anything I can do. I was trying to go with a stock, rooted rom to run sprint football live but can't get anyhting to work. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What recovery are u using? try updating to 1.7.
Sounds as if you may be using Clockwork, try flasing a different recovery. I use Godspeed and it cuts down the time and never lets me down. Here is a link to the image as well as abd instructions on how to install it on your Hero.

yeah thats a great idea, use godspeed or open rom manager app and scroll all the way to the bottom then choose flash alternate recover and flash 1.6.2 recovery. and when u download new roms to flash, after u transfer them to your phone make sure you hit eject before u just pull or yoink it out ur comp.

Help me install Froyo on AT&T Samsung Captivate

I have just unlocked AT&T Captivate with JH& update. Kindly tell me how to install froyo to it so that it doesn't get unlocked again and at the same time I could get froyo at my phone.
getting froyo
if you flash a rom you will have to re unlock it , BUT if you saved your unlcok code you can re enter it. the best way in my opion is to find a custom froyo or gingerbread rom that you want and root your phone ( if not already done just apply update zip and then turn phone off and hold down up/down buttons and power and when at&t logo comes on let go of power and continue to hold voume buttons then use buttons to go down to "re-install packets" and click power then it will root and reboot) and download cwm (i used rom manger free from market) and then transfer the "zip file" for the custom rom you want ( for froyo i used cognition 2.3b8 but just google cognition xda and is by designgears) then click reboot into recovery and "reinstall packets" and it will boot into cwm recory screen go down to "install ZIP from sd" then click it and find the rom zip you had and click it and will install zip !!!!MAKE SHORE YOU HAVE 3 BUTTON DOWNLOAD COMBINATION BEFORE MESSING WITH PHONE!!! to get to that just take sim card, sdcard, and battery out of phone, open up "odin one click" (to get it for captivate just look for odin one click by designgears) and hold down JUST up and down volume and plug in if you ever want to go back to out of box phone just use the odin and go back and if doesnt work just keep taking battery out and unplugging and re plugging if you have any questions just pm me hope you find this usefull
Look at ponack.net you should be able to find everything you need there. Everything from rooting your phone to flashing back to stock. They walk you thru it pretty well. After you have it rooted and have rom manager and titanium backup (for backing up your apps) then look for a rom here. I'm running phoenix 1.0 it's a great rom that is over clocked. Good luck with it all, after you get started it's addictive. Just a warning. Don't be affraid to ask for help when you need it this is a pretty good community of people here, just make sure you post in the right place. Happy New Year

Clockwork Mod Help

Trying to get Clockwork mod to work and am Screwing it up I guess. I bought Rom Manager trying to download a Rom thru it but it doesnt want to let me do this. So I guess I am going to try Precision. I downloaded it and have it on the SD card but it seems to be doing something wierd. I did a titanium backup of my apps. How do I save my current Rom incase I screw pooch? Please help a clueless tired of waiting on ATT newb
PS Phone was already rooted prior to Rom Manager
Need to do the following to get clock work installed. Its not a signed install so you need to mod the boot loader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213&highlight=signature
Where to start?
Did you flash clockwork, top option.in rom manager
You are on 2.1 correct
Ok this just got confusing. Do I just put this file on SD card too or does this require more steps?
Yes I did that and it says I have Current Recovery ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2
If you have clockwork recovery you can flash.
When you say backing up your rom are you looking for a way back to stock
Yes. In case I screw the pooch. But what about what tnerb said about modifying the boot loader???
PS Yes I am on 2.1 and was rooted prior to putting Rom Manager on phone
PPS should I also delete everythign off SD card before continuing
jpinks said:

he assumed you were on 2.2, disregard
Do you know what odin is?
At&t or rogers
what did you back up with titanium

I am on ATT , Backup all user apps is the batch backup I did and copied that backup to the pc. Should I do the all user apps and system data. Yes I know of Odin but the download links to it arent working, from the stickied post.
No system apps, just user
Give me a favor, turn phone off, pull battery, under battery white sticker on phone, top left, build number, between 1006-1012. What is yours
Sorry stupid otterbox is fighting got it off now
Its 1009 build
Odin dl to pc just in case
http://www.fileserve.com/file/emnCn2j
Do you have your contacts backed up
Usb drivers installed
Yeah drivers are installed. I have been using Kies for media transfers. I was hoping Samsung would make it a usefull program but I dont think that will ever happen. I thought TBU backed that up when I backed up my phone.
If you want to flash its easy, probably should take the time to understand, but I can get you flashed quick
Sure I appreciate the help. I hate to say most of the tutorials online suck. LOL
Cant I just save my contacts to the Sim and be ok?
So what is it, get me there now, be safe and learn. I am bored, nothing new ro flash
Be safe and learn is always good with me
Do you use gtalk

[REF] Sk4g root and cwm files

First off i will make this clear I DID NOT CREATE ANY OF THESE I AM JUST RE-HOSTING THEM i know alot of download links failed after awhile an seeing how there is only about 1-2 people still on this forum that actually try to contribute. and i hope alot of people will find this useful ..
i will add what it is an what to do with it after the links .
SIDEKICK 4G files
ADB Fileshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/2k0wp2qmd805oq7/ADB_Files.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?a2ytuvc4qandhfi
extract to c:\
you will have to make a folder name it adb
this is to enter reboot recovery and download mode with out a root.
ODIN KD1 Fileshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/w2lqhszgxajp564/Odin3+v1.61andsk4g.pit.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?t1gvfrwqq4n1y3d
this needs 2 other files which i dont have anymore but either way i recommend the kg2 files
ODIN KG2https://www.dropbox.com/s/uddzc6ss9v31lh8/t839-Sidekick4G-UVKG2-One-Click.jar
this is if you need to restore to stock
just put your phone into download mode either through the phone or adb files above
but this may take a few trys (i did my phone took the whole night to get back to a fresh stock)
Super-One Click to Root Devicehttp://www.mediafire.com/download.php?rj08beywov4thc1
this is the main thing you will need to root the device just download unzip in to a new folder and run (make sure device is in debugging mode) settings > application > development > debugging mode
Beginners packhttp://d-h.st/QxO
This pack has all the stuff you need for beginning sk4g root/cwm also has the kg2 one click odin which may be needed for faulty root(does happen not all the time so if you get an error you may have to odin back to stock then re root)
i hope anyone who does have any files will upload them here to help others as i dont have every file that may be needed..
Extras:
KJ2 Lockscreens
(if you dont like the update status in the notification center go to settings>display and turn off before flashing this)https://www.dropbox.com/s/kypk18gqszx4onj/KJ2_Locks_v1.1_-_PDT.zip

There is aother set of drivers you can download that work with the sidekick I forgot the name should be in a sticky tho
Also it might be the computer or cord sometimes the pins in them get damaged so id suggest you try another cord or computer / usb port
If the computer isn't reading the device is plugged in even if everything else is working flawless then its the phone so try turning it off an plugging it in as then none of the systems are running an should charge if so then you may have to odin which is a pain

You have to stay away from ROM manager, it flashes the wrong recovery and well... You'll be stuck at stock. This phone isn't like too many others, it seems to hide recovery within the ROM you are using, then when you flash a custom ROM you get a recovery embedded in there. I believe if you use one of the one click installers it adds the voodoo (red recovery) to your phone, which is the one you need.
So there are some annoying steps to flash your first ROM, but after you do all is good and you can flash like any other phone. Look in the general section for a sticky called noon guide to root or something, I believe that's what I used to get the red recovery, but I used a different method to root as I'm not a fan of one click anything
If you get stuck post back and someone here will be glad to jump in and help

Can I do this to get cwm http://theunlockr.com/2012/10/14/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-t-mobile-sidekick-4g/ I want to install the Jb Nexus rom...this is very confusing...I have a my touch 4g and it wasn't this complicated to flash cwm.
yes that looks about right to me, heres a quick synopsis of how i first rooted
1 searched out all files needed,
drivers
clockwork recovery
first rom i wanted to try
i got that recovery file and update.zip
2 then i was able to dig up THIS as if for learning purposes alone i dont use on clicks (and this will work with windows too)
3 after i was rooted i exchanged the recovery file in a similar way as laid out in the link you have
4 booted into that recovery (yellow)
acctually i think i just found the thread that helped me the most HERE
i know it seems complicated but its easy, if you mess things up you should learn to odin or heimdall anyway as if you ever f up you use this to go back to scratch and start over.
yeah it may have seemed easier on your glacier but htc and samsung build their firmware/software very different and in many ways i find the htc phone more complicated and are more easily bricked.
anyway follow the guides and youll be good
happy flashing!

Thanks, I did what the other guide said but when I do reinstall package I get an error of E:signature verification failed. Should I try deleting any cwm I did before from Rom Manager, not sure what to delete though...I'm almost there...
if you have a sig failed error my guess is you dont have the right clockwork, you cant use what comes with rom manager, in fact your best off deleting it and not using it, on any phone (but thats a different matter) THIS IS THE RECOVERY YOU NEED just to start, then you will end up flashing the voodoo lag fix recovery, once you have the voodoo (red) recovery your good to go, really its been enough time since i did all this that i may not be the best person to ask, but i do remember not seeing a single guide with all the info i needed, i had to take piece from here and a bit from there... i guess my recommendation is to read through the coutless posts of people attempting their first time and failing, you learn best from this but its time consuming
you need the file up there ^ an then follow this down here (if you get lost please tell me ill help if I can)
When cwm is finished downloading rename it to recovery (it will be a recovery.zip)
Put this file in your sd card but don't put it in ayfolders
The with the same file you want to extract it to (exapmle downloads) a new folder
With the file that is in a folder you want to move this to system\bin\
It will then ask if you want to replace a file an cick yes
Now go into recovery an reinstall packages
To download a rom
Install the zip to sdcard
Go into recovery
Reinstall packages
Go to backup and restore an make a backup (just in case)
Now wipe all data cache and go to advance an wipe dalvik
Go back an go to mounts
Unmount system
Go back
Go to install zip
Go to choose zip
Find the rom you downloaded an click it
Now wait
You will here a smexy robot talk to you xD
Wait atleast 10 mins for everything to start up an run
An you are done
