Third party video players - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a third party ffmpeg video player that isn't absolutely terrible? Every one that I have used has a really bad UI and I'm tired of dealing with them.

They're all miserable unfortunately.
I use VitalPlayer because it's UI is the most unobtrusive of the lot.

I use MoboPlayer. The UI is simple and functional, thats all I care.

MoboPlayer is what I use at the moment, but it's quite pathetic. Why does the menu button lock the screen instead of, you know, bringing up the damn menu? Why are settings in some awkward pop up that's meant to be used for contact data? :rage:
I know Android developers are terrible at UX, but these video players literally take the cake.

I once tried something called VPlayer, seemed to work OK for me at the time. I like how you can swipe across the top to seek through a video. Only thing is that it's a 7-day trial, you'll need to pay for the unlocker app to use it for any longer.

Whilst I agree that the UI could do with a little work, I don't have an issue with "Menu" being the screen lock. It's actually very convenient when you're playing video for small children, and I am *far* more likely to want to lock the screen than I am to access the settings.
So, for me, this particular design decision works.
I also really like the way that Moboplayer effectively uses gestures for brightness, volume, and "seek".

[APP] Real player beta in now market

the real player handles video, music and photos...
I think it works very good for videos. the music player is too much like the default player and the photo browser pulls from a random folder rather than viewing all your picture folders.
anyways it is worth trying out

lol i was thinking the same thing. All my real player did was freeze all the time on my PC
This response is to reinforce my distaste for RealPlayer, their business model, their apps, and their lack of openess since their earliest inception. I can only hope that Android people do not show any interest in RealPlayer and allow it to die through lack of support/interest by the community.
UI sucks, file management sucks, options(lack of) suck....this needs serious work. I have no idea why they would label this beta. It might be 'working', but I wouldn't want my name on it, that's for sure.
I dislike real too (have for at-least a decade), however since they have embraced android and took the time to create an app, I'm willing to give them a chance to redeem themselves.

[Q] Browser multi tasking

Sometimes whilst surfing the net i like to listen to Youtube while using another webpage to surf at the same time, trying to do this on my Asus but it shuts down the sound immediatley.
Is there a workaround available for me to listen to Youtube while surfing?
I assume you're using the stock broswer, and switching tabs? That's weird - and unfortunate - behaviour, as I like to do the same thing (though I haven't got my Transformer just yet).
Did you try maybe using the youtube app while browsing with the browser? It probably won't work, but it is worth a shot.
I don't have my TF in front of me, but did you try using youtube in browser instead of the app? I know the app sound shuts off, but its worth a try.
Yeah i've tried both ways and also tried using Firefox and Dolphin browsers but they all cut the sound out when you open up another tab.
Hasn't anybody else experienced this?
I have. I watch a lot of Flash live streaming (StarCraft 2 live streams), and every time I want to check IRC, I have to close the browser, which causes the Flash process to freeze. The same thing applies to the YouTube app. This is by design, and I cannot think of any way to fix it.
Really unfortunate, tbh.

Yes, i have as well. The tablet doesn't do true multitasking as would a desktop pc. You can't have two tabs open that are actually streaming information at the same time.
I like to play music from one tab and work in another just like you, and the TF won't do this. It's like with the ipad or iphone, they don't actually multitask, they sort of freeze your apps until you open them again.
yea. noticed that yesterday...
sucks.
opened youtube to listen to a song, opened a second tab for guitartabs..
when i switched to the tabs..sound muted.

I don't believe its a transformer thing, thats Honeycomb.
Well if pandora can stream music in he background it is the apps doing. The developer designed the app that way so the app will not eat the batt and the cpu cycles when left open.
Otherwise a user would need to remember to close youtube correctly with an exit button or suffer a dead batt or slow tab.

As previously mentioned, this is by design. I don't think that will change. These devices are meant to conserve power while giving good performance. Why waste it decoding video when it is not being watched? The device does do true multitasking so a browser of this nature is certainly possible. Music will play in the background just not video.
The flash layer hibernates when it's no longer in the foreground. It's by design.

Ya, its battery management.
Ask in dev forum if someone can make an app to play youtube in background.
There is a post in the Xoom forums where is works with a particular browser and HC 3.1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13916886&postcount=68
I was streaming the "This is my Next Podcast" in a browser tab (Dolphin Browser HD) switching between tabs and apps with no problems yesterday. Maybe it's a settings issue, though I never made any significant changes so I don't know what it would be. I do use a desktop user agent... hmm, I'll try it again to make sure it wasn't an anomoly.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Yep, doing it right now. Running .13 w/ Dolphin HD Browser.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
It must just depend on the player, some flash content may just be a no go.

Skype works
I can confirm that xformer can multi-task no problem, but seems to be dependent on the app. E.g. Skype works fine. I can have a video call going in the background, the other party can see me and we can keep talking, while I can go to home screen, fire up the browser and start surfing. Does not work for Youtube. via the app or the browser's built-in. In fact the browser (built-in) itself seems incapable, i.e. anything running on the browser shuts down, if the task is switched away. This also applies to tabs, i.e. if I fire up two tabs at the same time loading content, only the tab on focus continues to load, while the other ones go on a "paused" state. I haven't checked with Opera Mobile (flash is dead slow on any browser other than the built-in one), so I hardly use Opera Mobile.
I think pandora works in the bg as well. But I wasn't able to get the music player going on the background. I haven't tried Amazon mp3 player in the bg yet.

Android is not multitaskig ? no simultaneously running apps

Hi,
I got both Asus Transformer with Honeycomb 3.2 and Galaxy S2 with 2.3.4
Neither of them is multitasking ?? I can't listen to the music and e.g. read
emails or use any other app. Going to emails will stop music, youtube etc..
It rather 'parks' apps and not runs nor stop them.
With both of devices running on dual core CPUs this is quite disappointing.
Is there a way, a flag or setting somewhere in the OS to enable real multitasking ?
Thanks
when you switch from one application to another, are you using the back button or home button? the back button ends your application while the home button leaves your application as it is
Thanks,
I see now the stock audio player works in background when using home button.
Youtube doesn't. some apps seem to be privileged to run in background and other are not.

Not exactly. It all depends on the application - apps have full control over a back button, it can't kill them. But many apps exit themselves on back button.

Youtube doesn't because Google has implemented it that way. Most of users don't want to play videos in the background, so Youtube app automatically stops playback when going background.

It makes perfect sense. I usually have music videos running in the background. It awesome and im disappoied that my asus tf101 running honeycomb 3.2 doesn't allow me to run awesome music in the background. rage!
Why don'y you convert it to mp3?
or, if you want to keep it, I think Meridian Media Player can play video files as mp3.
There is so many songs that are on youtube and there are some cool playlists too. i spose its kinda like a cloud but a universal cloud at that. This docking keyboard is sooooooo slow and the cursor keeps jumping to the browser http: Plus why when i hit spacebar does the input do irregular things. For example: when using youtube i cannot use spacebar on docking board i have to use onscreen keyboard. so annoying. Sorry asus tf101 honeycomb but you may be a dudddd or i this particular tf101 needs taking back and replacing.
sorry for bad english in above text but yea keyboard is playing up.

Your personal downsides of the SurfaceRT?

Hi guys,
I guess we all spent quite I time now playing with our Surfaces, so I wonder what the things are that bother you the most right now?
For me personally it comes down to two main things: Performance and a real video player
Performancewise I think the Surface has really good hardware, but either WinRT or the App optimization clearly lacks so far, as there are quite a few times when I'm thinking: Come on, that's all you got?! And I'm not even thinking UI performance or Desktop performance, as I'm quite happy with that, Metro's probably not iOS fluent, but it's definitely fluent enough, and also the occasional little lag when opening Apps is fine for me.
But the in-App performance is simply too bad. No matter if it's games (I guess I didn't find a single game with at least modest graphics which was really fluent) or the video player (come on, not being able to play a single SD .avi fluently?!).
And that already brings me to my secong point: Video Player. To put it quite simple, either Microsoft will come up with a better looking, better performing player that supports all the usual types of files (no .mkv?!), or a third party player will do the job. Or I'm going to send it back, as that's simply a no go for a tab.
In then meantime I'm halfway between amazed and frustrated what the Surface can and can't do
I could do with a video player that will play dvd ts format as I have loads on my nas, if anyone knows one already would be good to know i loved media centre would be great to get something like that.
I found pinball being open even in background creates a lag issue so i always have to shut it down fully, i wander if other apps are also having this effect? Could explain lag issues as once closed mine is back to full no lag speed. It has same effect if its only thing open or there is a load.

I am able to play 720p xvid/avi ripped from bluray with no problem. What type of avi are you playing?
Here is my list of complaints:
- No LTE
- Lack of apps
- Random hang ups or general app slowness and/or crashing (not a major problem, and will hopefully be resolved through OS and app updates)
- My iPad now is boring to use
I try to play xvid avis which are way more fluent on my notebook... But also other avis are more fluent on the notebook...

There is a fix for the low volume. Check the tips and tricks thread.
I like the weight, right now the only downside I have is lack of VPN connectivity.

My main complaint is the lack of POP3 email capability. I bought it mainly for work and my work email is a POP3, so this is a thing that will make me return it, even that I really love it far.

While somewhat convoluted, a work around is to send your work email to something like gmail which does support POP3, then link your gmail to the e-mail app on the surface.
To the OP, no tablet that I'm aware of supports MKV playback with first party video players. That is something the app store will take care of in time.
Anyways, no real complaints on my end, just some minor issues like the trackpad being a bit twitchy for my taste. Obviously the app store is a weak point, but that will get better with time and I bought the Surface understanding that.
Xda forum makes my Surface unresponsive if I'm using IE MetroStyle. If I switch to the full version everything works more or less fine.
thanks for posting these! I'm considering buying a surface and need to know these things.
I found in another thread that adding ad blockers lists in the Settings of IE fixes my performance issues when I'm using XDA, I tested and it works.

It is a Windows RT app (which is different from a WinRT app- all apps are WinRT apps), however it still only plays the same files that the built-in player can. It's just a wrapper for that.
One of the primary reasons for getting a Surface for me was consuming video content. So far;
- Sky Go in the UK website uses Silverlight and there's no Silverlight support
- UK Football League websites 'Player' video services use Flash and they're not on Microsoft's whitelist (thank the lord for XDA Devs workaround for that one)
- No support for Windows 7 Media Center .wtv Recorded TV files, of which I have tons
Add on top of this buggy built in apps like People, Music & Video. There's enough about Surface that I still love it, and I know apps and updates will eventually resolve these issues but it's frustrating none the less.
My Surface creaks. Around the bezel at various spots near the edge of the tablet, if I press the bezel it goes in slightly as if there is a gap behind it or as if it hasn't been glued down properly. I tried this all around the tablet. I tried this on my friend's Surface last night but her screen is fine. So I am returning my Surface ? Does your creak?
I am missing a good forum to discuss issues people are having with their surface devices. I am totally happy with mine, but still misisng sume things. Where can I have useful discussions about this ?

Sorry for being to quick, I wanted to add some of my probs:
Pop 3 account. I already have read a lot of disussions on this and found some tips, but my provider only supports POP3
Synching my Windows Phon 7.5 (simply not working)
Locking the device when I close the lid, meaning if I close the cover (touch or type) I want the device to be locked
Support for older micro SD Cards. I cant my SD cards to work only the new SDHCX cards work
Does anyone know a good method to search the AppStore ? I realized that I am getting different results if I do a "general" search in the store or If I look for an app in the specific section. This is getting me mad.
When will MSFT release the final version of its Office 2013 products to the Surface users ? I already have it on my PC but the Surface still has a preview of Office 2013

Music Player

Question for you guys...
I stream music from my phone while I work out, using Amazon Music. On my AW watch, once music is playing, it is always on the active watch face (change track, volume, etc). On the Gear, if I open the music app, I get the same features (even the cover art), but when the face times out, the app closes. Is there a way to get it stay on until I close it? It's handy to have running while I am working out.
Thanks!
I'm not sure if this helps, but my BeyondPod podcast app stays on my S3 music player widget after I initiate it on the paired S6 phone. Have you tried using the music player widget?

Yes there's a music widget app. I have mines set up to be the first widget from my watch face for easy access. Any time you play music from your phone from mostly any app it will show up controls for it. Weather its the stock music app, YouTube, Spotify, play music, or SoundCloud to name the few I use it will show up. Just go all the way to the right of your watch fave with the bezel scroll and it will have the option to place a new widget and just hold the widget when place to move it around

This!! Music controls are essential. I also went from AW and this has been my biggest issue. I would have loved the watch to keep the app open, any app for that matter, until I chose otherwise.
My "fix" has been to add the music player app to open with the double click action, but it's still a pain.
Also, rotating the bezel to skip songs instead of volume, seems kind of redundant in my eyes, as there are already buttons for that on the screen.
so if I am tracking, you have to rotate to the widget each time you want to manipulate the music? am I getting it right? there is no "stay active" portion of the music player?
thanks all

It really shouldn't be that difficult either. I'm new to Tizen, but as far as I can understand, it was a feature they removed.
This doesn't really help solve the issue, but another way to get to the music player quickly is to swipe down from the top (12 o'clock position) of the watch face to get to the "quick settings." There you will see a music note - touch it and it brings up the music player.

Thanks While it's nice to have a shortcut there, you still have to navigate to that button every time, which is a hazzle. It seems we just have to wait till Samsung hopefully brings an update to fix this.

Thank you! :good: Didn't know they had that. Do you think they will actually listen?
big companies only listen to big noise, so it's unlikely they'll do anything unless more people suggest this.
thephonus directed my attention to this little tool in another thread: http://apps.samsung.com/gear/appDetail.as?appId=suQANKUenM
it's a decent temporary solution, while active it disables the standby/AOD timer.
you should be careful though, as it also prevents burn-in protection from activating (shifting pixels, low light)
