Music Player - Samsung Gear S3

Question for you guys...
I stream music from my phone while I work out, using Amazon Music. On my AW watch, once music is playing, it is always on the active watch face (change track, volume, etc). On the Gear, if I open the music app, I get the same features (even the cover art), but when the face times out, the app closes. Is there a way to get it stay on until I close it? It's handy to have running while I am working out.
Thanks!

I'm not sure if this helps, but my BeyondPod podcast app stays on my S3 music player widget after I initiate it on the paired S6 phone. Have you tried using the music player widget?

I have not, I'm more familiar with Android Wear. I will see if I can figure that out. You mean set it as one of the programs you can quickly access from the bezel?

Yes there's a music widget app. I have mines set up to be the first widget from my watch face for easy access. Any time you play music from your phone from mostly any app it will show up controls for it. Weather its the stock music app, YouTube, Spotify, play music, or SoundCloud to name the few I use it will show up. Just go all the way to the right of your watch fave with the bezel scroll and it will have the option to place a new widget and just hold the widget when place to move it around

This!! Music controls are essential. I also went from AW and this has been my biggest issue. I would have loved the watch to keep the app open, any app for that matter, until I chose otherwise.
My "fix" has been to add the music player app to open with the double click action, but it's still a pain.
Also, rotating the bezel to skip songs instead of volume, seems kind of redundant in my eyes, as there are already buttons for that on the screen.

so if I am tracking, you have to rotate to the widget each time you want to manipulate the music? am I getting it right? there is no "stay active" portion of the music player?
thanks all

It would seem that way. I really hope someone finds a fix for this.

It really shouldn't be that difficult either. I'm new to Tizen, but as far as I can understand, it was a feature they removed.

This doesn't really help solve the issue, but another way to get to the music player quickly is to swipe down from the top (12 o'clock position) of the watch face to get to the "quick settings." There you will see a music note - touch it and it brings up the music player.

Thanks While it's nice to have a shortcut there, you still have to navigate to that button every time, which is a hazzle. It seems we just have to wait till Samsung hopefully brings an update to fix this.

request it as a feature through samsung's help system, this can be found in the Samsung gear app in the help options.
i requested it there before I found this thread.

Thank you! :good: Didn't know they had that. Do you think they will actually listen?

big companies only listen to big noise, so it's unlikely they'll do anything unless more people suggest this.

thephonus directed my attention to this little tool in another thread: http://apps.samsung.com/gear/appDetail.as?appId=suQANKUenM
it's a decent temporary solution, while active it disables the standby/AOD timer.
you should be careful though, as it also prevents burn-in protection from activating (shifting pixels, low light)

Any way to get around notifications pausing music? Without turning them off?

Android pauses music playback to play notifications. Is there a fix?
CyanogenMod 7 has the option to change that but I'm not sure how to do that otherwise.
I've read about a app called Tasker and that will prioritize your processes. It costs 6-something on the Market if I recall correctly.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Tasker is more like Locale. It doesn't do that - From what I know.
BTW, having this same issue on my HTC DHD.
It have to do with the Audio Focus in Android.
Is the Cyogen information accurate?
Does anyone have any more information?
I think you might be able to download the music player app called "double twist" from the market, and i dont think it will cut off. also, you can make all of the notifications vibrations if you dont mind

I use Doubletwist, it does not do that. It also messes up some of my album art and flat out doesn't play one of my few songs on my phone.
And I do not want to turn off notifications. I wish Google would fix such a horrible oversight.

On screen lyrics app

Hi,
I wanted to ask if you know an app which shows the lyrics of a song (like a bubble or sth.) directly on the music app or in the notification (but not the way as AirLyrics does).
I'm using PlayerPro, but the lyrics support isn't so good for me. Always clicking long on a song album cover and just get the lyrics shown app as a long paragraph isn't so nice. :/
Thanks!

Hi mate
Why not like AirLyrics way?
Tell me why, I need feedback for improvements.
You can use musixmatch or tunewiki. Although I'm not that big a fan of either.

Hi together,
thanks for the answers.
To AirLyrics: I'd like to have the lyrics on my musicplayer, like a bubble or sth. which turns up. Another way would be that the lyrics get displayed in the notificationbar. The thing is, I don't want to make a detour to another app which needs to be opened. I just want it as comfortable as possible. I have to thanks a lot that you replied and want to have improvement feedbacks.
To TTPod: I already used the app on my mobile, but didn't like it too much. It is quite nice also with the themes and lyrics integration, but I somehow just didn't like it.

[Q] Disable stock music player

Hi there,
I don't like to use the stock music player. I want to use Spotify only.
If the music is playing and the device is locked, I push the power button und get the lock screen, with the music controls in the upper area. If I hit "pause", the fun begins: Spotify stops playing and the stock music app starts playing. This is just ridiculous.
I tried to set Spotify as default music player, but that doesn't change that behaviour. I installed Nova Launcher, but I cannot "disable" the stock apps as I have no root.
Are there any possibilities to disable the stock music app without root?

Seems not possible without root i have the same Problem with Google play music. Stock music begins to play...
Think positively that the default player comes with many free music.
But its not possible to control the music through lock screen. Thats a big gap
I am having this same issue. Stock lock screen seems to have media controls permanently locked to stock music player. The most infuriating thing is the artwork and everything is displayed as you would expect, but as soon as you touch a media control it activates stock music app.
What a pain in the arse bug Hauwei. how did you screw that up!?!

Have you tried changing the default music app? Settings -> Manage Apps -> Default app settings -> Music
Doesn't help me with Pocket Casts, but if Spotify shows up here you might have a solution.

You can't change the default music app to Spotify. In addition, I've already tried changing it to something other than the default music app but it still does't work.
It seems like the only way to do it is to disable the stock music app - but I don't have root
Damn, you're right. Just tried it with PowerAmp with the same result. The lock screen is even worse, overlaying the Huawei buttons (that don't work) over the PowerAmp lock screen controls. The smart cover controls serve only to stop the music, and once paused you have to unlock to play again.
This may be what pushes me to root...

Even with root you won't be able to solve the stock lockscreen music button mess ... Huawei did a lot right with the Mate 7 and with EMUI, but they also have a lot of silly bugs that can drive you crazy ...

Thanks for that. I do agree - there is a lot in EMUI that I would normally root to implement - and this is sadly something we will have to live with, for now. Thankfully Pocket Casts monitors the buttons on my Nokia Monster headphones, and that's how I pause/unpause anyway.
Does anyone know of a forum we can voice our concerns on? Perhaps a feedback mechanism that Huawei monitors...
UPDATE: I found a solution for this dilemma. You'll need root though. The music player controls in the lockscreen can actually be used to control ANY currently running music app and even show title and album cover. HOWEVER, you'll have to UNINSTALL the Huawei Music app from the system folder, which is what you need root for. Once the Huawei Music app is gone (remember: UNINSTALLED, NOT frozen), the fixed link between the lockscreen controls and the stock music player are gone.
Sweet. Gives me a good reason to root. Now to go find that thread...
[EDIT]
Damn, looks like my firmware has been updated beyond what works for a live root solution.

BL unlocking is a bit quirky, but you can always revert back to the stock BL after flashing CWM. Rooting once you have unlocked your BL is easy-peasy.
You can disable the Music app out right i do this via adb shell using the following command.
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.mediacenter

This can be done without root as it only uninstalls from the user not the phone so factory reset will get the app back.
Make sure you reboot after to make it take effect.

How can I use Tasker to make a watchface with music controls?
watchmaker lets you make your own watchfaces with buttons that can trigger tasker tasks.
in tasker you can create tasks that simulate media buttons.
and then you can send the %MTRACK variable from tasker to watchmaker if you want to be able to show the currently playing track.
What do I put in the right hand side of the variable?
Maybe I should start another thread asking my Tasker questions since I'm Clueless when it comes to Tasker.
Hi all . . . I'm reviving this to see if anyone has any other ideas. I don't want to keep my watch face lit up non-stop to control audio because that'd drain battery like crazy, so the "I am alive" trick is out. I don't really want to go for a media controller watchface, as the ones I like are already pretty information-dense, and I don't want to lose the features I like in favor of audio controls.
This is probably the feature I miss most since switching from my Pebble. It seems bonkers to me that there's no way to do this. Maybe with a 3rd party audio controls app? To be clear, I want to control audio playing from my phone, not from my watch . . .
You can link music app to double press on home button.
It is not ideal but if you are not using double press for something else maybe it can help you.
..... or made a Music Shortcut on a face
Boy, this is also annoying me. You have to scroll back or take an extra step which is frustrating as hell when you want to just change tracks. Will see if there's a workaround and get back.

Question Universal Music Widgets

For those of us who want to run a more standard Android launcher (Nova, oem launchers, etc), what are you guys doing re: music player controls?
I've noticed that car launchers like Agama and Vivid have pretty cool music controls integrated in- whether it is my Bluetooth connection to a phone, Spotify, Amazon Music, YT Music, etc., it displays whatever track information it has (sometimes art too) and universal play/pause/next/prev buttons. I like that.
My Atoto S8 Ultra (uis7862 based unit) comes with a pretty standard launcher. There is a music widget that seems to control just the built in local music player, which I don't like and therefore don't use. It got me thinking, are there any universal widgets that can work the same way the Vivid/Agama/etc launchers handle it?
I found and tried the following so far:
Music Widgets for Car Devices
This seemed promising on paper. I can't get it to switch between sources however, it gets stuck on the last one used even if I clear all open apps. For example, if I had Spotify open, and the next time I drive I want to listen to Amazon Music, it still shows Spotify controls and track information. I have to go into settings for the widget and press OK, only then will it update.
Also, I think I had the Bluetooth track control the very first time I installed it (I was playing music over BT to test it), but ever since I used it with anything else (Spotify, Amazon, etc) it refuses to ever go back to BT control.
Material Music Widget
I like the aesthetics of this one, seems much nicer than the first one. BUT, the trial version only allows you to connect it to a single app player so I can't confirm if it does what I want correctly. I also can't seem to get it to recognize the BT player, I'd imagine if it wasn't designed to be a car player widget it wouldn't be aware of that as an option.
What else should I try? What do you guys use?
I use Poweramp without any widget. The interface allows you to swipe left, right, up and down on the album cover. Very easy and intuitive. I like keeping it open to see the album cover. I have navigation, Waze on the left 2/3 of the screen and Poweramp on the right 1/3. I think it's 2/3 and 1/3 or it could be 3/4 and 1/4...not sure. I usually use the steering wheel controls to switch to the next song and play/pause. I have another button to change source, but I usually don't. I usually listen to the music on my USB stick using Poweramp.

That doesn't help me though.
I have multiple drivers of my car between my wife and daughter, we use a mix of sources between Spotify, Amazon Music, AA/Bluetooth (because my daughter has her own spotify account she wants to use), etc.
It's annoying to have so many interfaces, I feel like there could/should be one set of "now playing" info on the display, with one universal set of controls for pause/play/next etc.
Agama and other launchers do this correctly, but their UI is too busy and too far from stock for me. I like the stock Android UI better, with the recognizable and colorful icons, but finding a widget like this seems harder than expected.
I am finding the folks at 4PDA made something called Music Proxy which sort of takes over the FYT standard audio player and uses that widget. However, Atoto's built in player widget is kind of ugly, huge, and doesn't even support album art (unlike other launchers that have this built in), I was hoping for a better option.
Suggesting a totally different app (Poweramp) isn't a solution for me personally, although I appreciate the reply.

No idea. I know they used it on the FYT Android 6 Sofia's. I never used it. I had to dig down deep in my memory and then search Google Play Store to find it back.
I guess you simply have to try.

I wanted to as soon you wrote it, but it says not compatible with my version of Android.
I could try forcing it via side load but I feel like it might just not work since it says designed for KitKat.
Its a shame because we know it's possible for a widget to do what we are asking but no one has done it.
Meanwhile, thanks to suggestions elsewhere here, I found the music widget updater for Teyes and the music proxy app from 4pda that goes along with it.
It's VERY CLOSE to what I want. It turns the standard FYT music player into a "now playing" universal widget, supports pretty much any media including Bluetooth, and gives play/pause/prev/next controls to whatever is currently playing.
The only problem is that the Atoto oem widget is ugly and still doesn't support album art the way the ones I found above do.
It also doesn't go forward or back in the track like the other suggestion, but I know that isn't compatible with Bluetooth streaming anyway (avrcp support is weak, even in the Bluetooth player screen).
I wish I had more experience with app development so I could try making it myself.
Do you have link?

FYI, thanks to a post in another thread, @surfer63 pointed out that Ubiquity widget DOES work if you just sideload the apk, despite the Play Store saying incompatible. I installed mine from here and it seems to work:
https://m.apkpure.com/ubiquity-music-widget/com.jackthakar.musicwidget
The problem is, it STILL doesn't do what I wanted apparently: Give universal controls for all audio playing, including Bluetooth.
It's pretty much the same as the apps listed in the first post - as in, a good universal widget for apps (Spotify, Amazon Music, Youtube, etc). But it still does not recognize Bluetooth audio streaming. For that source of audio, you need to use the Bluetooth app on the radio to see and control what's playing. This is what I'm trying to avoid having to do.
The launchers like Vivid, Agama, etc, can all seem to integrate this into one player control. Even the WidgetUpdater for Teyes app linked above this post seems to get it, but relies on a very poorly designed stock launcher widget that doesn't look right on Atoto's launcher (text is aligned oddly). It's totally possible to get this working, but I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
Is it possible that Ubiquity works with other FYT units and their Bluetooth controls? I know my Atoto has a funny Bluetooth system compared to other FYT radios.
UPDATE:
Vivid Launcher. If you've tried it before and found it buggy, try it again now. It does it perfectly.
A long time ago and it was terrible re: compatibility with FYT (it was made for a different radio type). Tried to do too much customization and fell short, being buggy and freezing a lot.
I just tried it again because I remember their music widget was pretty spot on, and I have to say it seems like they really fixed it up to be more compatible, and the audio controls are now EVERYTHING I WANTED IT TO BE!
It will even automatically switch to Bluetooth audio as a source if you start playing something off your phone, pausing the head unit's playback elsewhere. Before this, if I was playing Spotify locally, I couldn't hear voice notes on my phone unless I switch over to the BT app. With the new Vivid launcher, it will automatically pause Spotify and switch to BT as a source when it detects something is playing there. I can then hit play on spotify again and continue.
And no matter what audio source is active, their music screen acts as a universal widget with controls and titles and even album art if there is any. I'm just so excited to have found this I had to share.

What kind of phone do you have and what version of Vivid launcher?
I have special version working well with NavRadio+ and when I use my phone that player sometimes changes into BT playing even if there's no music, but for example sound of typing.
I have a Oneplus 10 Pro, and I dunno - whatever version of Vivid is on the play store about 3 days ago!
I just installed the Vivid launcher on my wife's A6 pf (8581a) and none of the bluetooth or phone functions exist, so I guess they turn on / off features when it recognizes certain hardware?
I noticed that mine lags a couple of seconds before switching to bluetooth, so a notification like turning on my phone or getting a message doesn't switch, but anything that plays for 2+ seconds did. So a voice note would cut off the first couple of seconds, but at least I can replay if I need to and still don't need to change the headunit over.
Maybe your kb has too much constant noise so it clicks over?
