Hi guys,
I guess we all spent quite I time now playing with our Surfaces, so I wonder what the things are that bother you the most right now?
For me personally it comes down to two main things: Performance and a real video player
Performancewise I think the Surface has really good hardware, but either WinRT or the App optimization clearly lacks so far, as there are quite a few times when I'm thinking: Come on, that's all you got?! And I'm not even thinking UI performance or Desktop performance, as I'm quite happy with that, Metro's probably not iOS fluent, but it's definitely fluent enough, and also the occasional little lag when opening Apps is fine for me.
But the in-App performance is simply too bad. No matter if it's games (I guess I didn't find a single game with at least modest graphics which was really fluent) or the video player (come on, not being able to play a single SD .avi fluently?!).
And that already brings me to my secong point: Video Player. To put it quite simple, either Microsoft will come up with a better looking, better performing player that supports all the usual types of files (no .mkv?!), or a third party player will do the job. Or I'm going to send it back, as that's simply a no go for a tab.
In then meantime I'm halfway between amazed and frustrated what the Surface can and can't do
I could do with a video player that will play dvd ts format as I have loads on my nas, if anyone knows one already would be good to know i loved media centre would be great to get something like that.
I found pinball being open even in background creates a lag issue so i always have to shut it down fully, i wander if other apps are also having this effect? Could explain lag issues as once closed mine is back to full no lag speed. It has same effect if its only thing open or there is a load.

I am able to play 720p xvid/avi ripped from bluray with no problem. What type of avi are you playing?
Here is my list of complaints:
- No LTE
- Lack of apps
- Random hang ups or general app slowness and/or crashing (not a major problem, and will hopefully be resolved through OS and app updates)
- My iPad now is boring to use
I try to play xvid avis which are way more fluent on my notebook... But also other avis are more fluent on the notebook...

My negatives:
Very low volume
Quite heavy
No GPS
Occasionally touch pin keyboard does not show on wake up despite folded back. Need to use touch cover.

There is a fix for the low volume. Check the tips and tricks thread.
I like the weight, right now the only downside I have is lack of VPN connectivity.
I'd like to see general performance enhancements but I believe those will come.

I think it's heavy as well...1/4 lb shaved off would be great, but it is the same weight as an iPad for those wondering.
My main complaint is the lack of POP3 email capability. I bought it mainly for work and my work email is a POP3, so this is a thing that will make me return it, even that I really love it far.

While somewhat convoluted, a work around is to send your work email to something like gmail which does support POP3, then link your gmail to the e-mail app on the surface.
To the OP, no tablet that I'm aware of supports MKV playback with first party video players. That is something the app store will take care of in time.
Anyways, no real complaints on my end, just some minor issues like the trackpad being a bit twitchy for my taste. Obviously the app store is a weak point, but that will get better with time and I bought the Surface understanding that.
Xda forum makes my Surface unresponsive if I'm using IE MetroStyle. If I switch to the full version everything works more or less fine.
thanks for posting these! I'm considering buying a surface and need to know these things.
I found in another thread that adding ad blockers lists in the Settings of IE fixes my performance issues when I'm using XDA, I tested and it works.

O/T but the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 does support MKV playback on the stock video player.

It is a Windows RT app (which is different from a WinRT app- all apps are WinRT apps), however it still only plays the same files that the built-in player can. It's just a wrapper for that.
One of the primary reasons for getting a Surface for me was consuming video content. So far;
- Sky Go in the UK website uses Silverlight and there's no Silverlight support
- UK Football League websites 'Player' video services use Flash and they're not on Microsoft's whitelist (thank the lord for XDA Devs workaround for that one)
- No support for Windows 7 Media Center .wtv Recorded TV files, of which I have tons
Add on top of this buggy built in apps like People, Music & Video. There's enough about Surface that I still love it, and I know apps and updates will eventually resolve these issues but it's frustrating none the less.
My Surface creaks. Around the bezel at various spots near the edge of the tablet, if I press the bezel it goes in slightly as if there is a gap behind it or as if it hasn't been glued down properly. I tried this all around the tablet. I tried this on my friend's Surface last night but her screen is fine. So I am returning my Surface ? Does your creak?
I am missing a good forum to discuss issues people are having with their surface devices. I am totally happy with mine, but still misisng sume things. Where can I have useful discussions about this ?

Sorry for being to quick, I wanted to add some of my probs:
Pop 3 account. I already have read a lot of disussions on this and found some tips, but my provider only supports POP3
Synching my Windows Phon 7.5 (simply not working)
Locking the device when I close the lid, meaning if I close the cover (touch or type) I want the device to be locked
Support for older micro SD Cards. I cant my SD cards to work only the new SDHCX cards work
Does anyone know a good method to search the AppStore ? I realized that I am getting different results if I do a "general" search in the store or If I look for an app in the specific section. This is getting me mad.
When will MSFT release the final version of its Office 2013 products to the Surface users ? I already have it on my PC but the Surface still has a preview of Office 2013

If you've previously written this app off for S2P or what have you, I suggest you check out the latest update to the software.
It's no longer JUST a media player. It's becoming more like an iPod Touch built into your WinMo phone. Check out the Facebook, Twitter and RSS apps built into it. The new like-an-iPhone-but-better interface (for the full effect, fill 4 pages of icons. Yep. Pages aren't just side-by-side, but above and below.) Plus, it has an program launcher which allows you to add your favorite apps to the home screen, along with your favorite music/video feeds and podcasts.
All it needs is a clock, weather and notifications and it's Kinoma FTW. If they take it as far as adding contacts, email and SMS, I'll never look at my today screen again.
I use a shortcut in Kinoma to iContact, another to my gmail inbox and yet another to SMS... sadly, the lack of a clock doesn't allow me to replace SPB MS3 with Kinoma, but I'd like to
Honestly, it IS the best WinMo app out there.. very very impressive.
How does it handle its core function - media? Last time I checked it out it couldn't do bookmarks well or play .avi files. Has that changed?
It's still pretty useless as a Video Player (laggy and no avi support) but for just playing music with a quick, slick repsonsive interface it's great. The added funtionality more than makes up for the lack of Video, use Coreplayer or TCMP for that. I've posted a Youtube clip on this thread of it running along side TF3D on my Touch pro 2.

Sorry, but you are going to have to pay for the full version if you want all the features. And you are complaining that they offered you a way to get it for free? Really?
The freeplay version is FREE, no time limits, and has many of the features of the paid version. But I dont know if it has been updated like the paid version yet.
I actually used the TrialPay to get RealNetworks (yuk) to pay for my copy. I was glad I didn't have to shell out my own $30, but it would have been worth it even if I had. Photos, music, YouTube, Orb, Audible, Streaming radio, audio and video podcasts in one app. And now they added Facebook and Twitter, and an RSS reader. The program is not perfect, but its getting close.

For anybody interested in Kinoma Play who hasn't checked out TrialPay: There's lots of different kinds of offers, so the odds a pretty good that you'll find one that's interesting for you. We've had lots of people "buy" Kinoma Play for free since we introduced it as an option, and so far it seems to be a win-win for customers.

Tried the free version quite awhile back. At the time, wasn't interested in paying $30 then. Looks more tempting now. I've also been wanting to try Audible.com, so I signed up with them via TrialPay. Waiting for the Kinoma registration, but TrialPay seems like a great idea if you can find something you're interested in "trying" out.
Charles,
Any chance of having trialpay working in China as at the moment it is not working. So hope you could look into it.
Thanks.
Hmm... The TrialPay process must be a bit delayed due to the US holiday, still waiting on the registration. Will be patient, it's a good deal.
In the mean time, loaded up the latest Freeplay version. It has improved a lot since the last time I tried it!

I paid the $30 for the full version, but to be honest I'm disappointed.
No AVI support is huge. I don't think its Kinoma's place to make a user code a video a certain way before it is played.
The app store has the same apps you can get anywhere else and most of them are not free.
The skin is not very visually appealing.
It takes to long to launch.
I think it would be good for social web apps but I don't tweet or use Facebook so, to me it's useless.
I have a music player already.
It's sits in a forgotten cab in my PC.
I already uninstalled it from my mobile device.

It also does not autoresume where you last listened to a playlist or folder when restarting the app. So if you quit you must remember which song you were up to(my playlist is about 2000 songs). I went back to pocketplayer.
Thought I'd start a thread, similar to the games one, to allow for recommendations for apps that are found to runs particularly well on the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
I'll start this off with:
Google Earth - Obviously the big screen makes it nice, but the fast GPU and super smooth touchscreen controls also help. tilting and twisting with two-fingers, panning and flying over the high resolution terrain of the Alps is simply amazing. I'd almost say, due to the intuitive touchscreen controls, it's as good or even better than the desktop version (not as many options yet though).
AndroidVNC - This works just like I almost imagined. Sitting on the balcony, then 'tap...tap' my Kubuntu desktop is displayed nicely and can be used on my tab. Awesome for checking up on progress bars of running stuff.
WinAmp is cool on the Tab. Gives You big enough room to select and scroll through directories (compared the N1)
Speed Hud uses the FULL SCREEN, can't wait to try it in my car at night !
EStrong File explorer also uses full screen and is excellent to use on this device.
Wifi Analyzer on the Tab lookes like a professianl Wifi tool !
XBMC remote is alos great on this device. Only problem I have is when Yo rotate it during browsing folders it looses info and You have to go backwards one step to see anything again.
TuneIN radio also works great. I have it running in the background most of the time
Skype is also a dream on the Tab. Gives good room for the big communications...
Photoshop express on a screen like this rocks !
MSN DroidX also works really good
IM+ does not work well. It does 2/3 size in the center
Meridian player works really well too.(pro edition) Plays MKVfiles and everything I have tried smooth. Flac and mp3's are no problems at all.
I just discovered TV Flash. Works really well on Tab, good quality and nice selection of news channels. Some entertainment tv as well! Get it while its in beta!
I'll add another one:
GMote is awesome. Using the entire screen as a touchpad to control the mouse on my XBMC box. You can also switch to remote or keyboard mode, and even stream files from the computer to the Tab. Very nice.
Fennec official beta works a treat. Finally we have firefox!

Indeed. By the way, gmote doesn't work in fullscreen. Only the pad works, and not too well at that...

What exactly are you having trouble with? It automatically goes fullscreen for me (cover art of streaming music, the remote buttons and the file browser).
As for the touchpad, I did increase the mouse acceleration a bit beforehand, because I was using the touchpad from the Logitech DiNovo Mini before. Maybe that makes the difference.
The browser isn fullscreen for me. Cant remember now as ive uninstalled it. Ive got PocketCloud so its not really an issue.
Anyone tried GRemote? It's a prettier version of GMote, albeit commercial. http://gbmsoftware.com/
Will need to try Fennec, a link to a recent working .apk would be useful.

The server is, yes, but the client isn't.
They did say several months ago that they were working on a OS X server, but no further word of it, my guess is that it's not going to happen.
I'm searching for a good Newsreader App, where i have my Feed Abonnements on the left and the articles an the right, like you get it on your desktop browser when visiting google reader website.
Just search for fennec for android... can't be easier than that.

That's strange. In my case I just chose a root folder source for my comic collection that is located on my external sd card and away it went.
Perhaps you should get in touch with the developer through the comic reader mobi forum. The person seems to be quite hands on when it comes to helping users.

Yeah, JKK made a howto.
Even before today's update 'Skifta' has always been my favorite DLNA software. Today's update improved the honeycomb supoort and added landscape-mode.
It is far superior to the bundled 'MyNet' software as it discovers more servers, is faster and more stable. To put it in simple words, it just works!

Great feedback - thanks for the comments - glad you're enjoying the product!
For MKV (or other non-handset native formats), you probably want to install one of the third party players (I like VPlayer, but I know RockPlayer/MoboPlayer also feature on the list of likes by the team here). If Skifta detects other players available, it'll give you the option to use them for video playback.
Let us know if this works better for you (either here or over at our forums - forums.skifta.com).
Allan (of the Skifta team),
Updated and still cannot see any video, just music. Have Skifta on Dell streak without any problem. Mobo, rockplayer and arcmedia installed.

Well I'd uninstall and delete all data, cache etc of all of these apps (skifta, mediaplayers) and then install skifta and moboplayer only. These two work perfectly together for me (asus eee tf).

OMG, do you work for Skifta?
Well I gave it a try. Here it goes:
"Updating skifta" - no no no no. First launch did quite some download, but each time one starts Skifta an update check? And what happens when temporarily one has the INet down? Or some other connectivity problem? Well it did happen to me today; INet was up but the "updating skifta" was there just idle ... a good few minutes. No go exiting and relaunching Skifta ... always the update check. So in such cases the program is unusable at all.
Chose media source - "No media sources found". We wait and wait and wait... Aha! Found one server. But not the local MyNet which is always running. Oh, MyNet server appeared. And finally Skifta's own server. We need improvement with discovery. MyNet, ArkMC and UPnP are almost instantaneous.
On to video playback. We browse and select and ... have to select 3rd party player. No renderer function (at least for video). Sigh.
Images - buffering .... buffering .... buffering and image (turns out it's taking some time loading the icons images). But why is it so small??? Seems like 640x480 (sometimes 800x600) but _never_ fills the width or height. And it's not the server downscaling the images, try with the preinstalled on the TF101 local images like Boat, Bus, Cat. That's with jpegs, with gifs it does fit w or h. Lets zoom!!! Nope, no zoom A simple tif - black. Let's try a bitmap - black screen again. No message that unsupported, just black.
Audio. No ogg/vorbis support with builtin renderer. A very quick "unsupported" popup and automatically the next song is selected. Wav? Good they work. Seeking - nice, fluid. But ... with mp3 seeking is horrible, better if it was muted.
Overall it is very good that competition products appear. Skifter is still beta so much room for improvement. For the moment I'll stick with MyNet,
"to put it in simple words, it just works!"
Allan, after we users weed out the bugs, will the first non-beta be still ... free?
That's quite interesting. MyNet never worked for me but Skifta did out of the box. That's why I posted this thread, even though I don't get paid for it
Eventually everybody's gotta figure out what app is best for his hardware and software config, as it seems like right now there's no dlna app that works for everybody. Actually I haven't heard any bad reports about upnplay, but its UI is driving me nuts. Its all a compromise
Strange that MyNet didn't work for you. The more we get to chose from the merrier I do hope they will continue improving Skifta and keep the "low" (read: free) price tag.
Diodato - couple of points to make in terms of the issues you raise specifically..
On the update issues that you mention - Skifta checks for new fixes/functionality on each boot and dynamically introduces them if available. Primarily this is used for bug fies against specific devices/device classes. If there aren't any updates found, this should be pretty quick. Since version 0.72 the client has had the 'offline' mode built into it. Provided you've connected at least once before with an internet connection, it will startup without doing the check.
There was also a bug that meant that the app would sometimes hang on the 'updating' screen regardless of connection state - we think we've 95% fixed this, but there are still certain circumstances where it will happen - these occurrences are more likely around skifta app upgrades from the market if it's already running). There will be further bug fixes in this area as we narrow the causes down more.
In terms of the playback capabilities of Skifta - the app currently uses the native player (over which we have no control of codec support) or a third party player (in the case of video, if there are one - or many - installed). I know it's frustrating when your favourite codec X isn't in there (for us too), hence the introduction of the third party player option - there is a fairly large amount of choice here (vplayer being my current favourite and moboplayer getting a lot of good comments from our users).
Device discovery happens according to DLNA spec, but that sometimes means that you'll miss a broadcast and wait for the next retry. For the majority of devices, they'll respond to our first query and be instantly available - others won't and the app will discover them as they broadcast themselves.
We at Skifta very much appreciate all feedback, good or bad and as you probably noticed, try to respond with code drops, fixes, advice, etc fairly promptly - it is vital for the product as far as we're concerned to keep that feedback loop active.
We're also constantly working on new features, stability improvements, device compatibility enhancements and behind the scenes features that should mean that the service keeps moving for you guys. It would definitely be worth you checking out the latest market upgrade (0.74) that addresses some of the items I've touched on above.
We're working on some particularly exciting features right now that I'll be able to talk to you about soon!
Allan.
UpnPlay is a good dlna client also. Mynet didn't want to list my files for some reason.

No, I am not looking for a universal player. The native Android will do for me. But I didn't know that Skifta is delegating _all_ video rendering to an external player. Would be nice if Skifta supported also the video playback through the native renderer. Perhaps future releases.
For the moment you can try to fix playback of OGG (natively supported by the Android player) and images (full screen with zoom possibility)

Also, you can watch live tv
I have orb installed on my media center computer, I'm using skifta and moboplayer and now I can watch live tv on my TF. This is wonderful.

Youtube videos, or other flash videos don't just start playing by themselves
So I was thinking about possibly another phone, though I love this phone (screen, camera and all)
I was also thinking about trying to flash ubuntu (it would be a PC! at least this what I think anyways)
I was just wondering if there were better phones out there under AT&T for the money, not sure if my insurance would allow me to jump from one phone to another so easily... need to talk to the guys at the shop.
Thanks for any input
I don't know what you mean by YouTube does not start by itself but no android phone let's you play a video in the background. I would keep the infuse but get insurance on it.
What I mean by that is
On a PC (desktop or laptop etc... pad even)
A video starts playing by itself when you click the link, or refresh the page, this is not so
I mean perhaps the flash hasn't quite gotten there yet and I should appreciate the fact that I can even stream youtube videos in the first place
And the other part is, once I have this clicking, as soon as I minimize the web (press home) the music stops, same thing happens when I press the power button
(I like to look up a lot of music on youtube and listen to it in the background) while performing other tasks
thanks for the reply
Flash on Android is suspended when out of focus. There's nothing you can do about this, and it's unlikely that will change since Flash was discontinued for all mobile platforms.
flash is discontinued. It it still works and is useable just won't be updated

unfortunately this isn't just an infuse issue. Most phones i've tried won't let you watch youtube videos in the background, only if it's the main app open.
Get another Infuse. They're great phones and dirt cheap now. The only other one that's remotely better than the Infuse and the same size is the Skyrocket, but that one is $250 at the moment...and AT&T doesn't seem to be handing them out cheaply. Or you can drop down in size and get the S2...but that one is still $199 because it's a good seller. We should be getting our official GB release sometime in December so grab another Infuse and help decrease the surplus inventory.
What I'm looking to do with my SGS3 is WIRELESSLY mirror the audio, and video of my phone to a HTPC/Mac. Apple via "Airplay"allows for this in iOS and it works BEAUTIFULLY using a client on the pc/mac like AirServer, or Reflection. I find it difficult to believe that this is not available on an Android platform. The problem is, searching for such an app almost always results in finding remote desktop apps n such. Watch a video using Airserver or Reflection, and you'll see what I'm looking to do. I've seen media player apps that'll send videos/audio, but not by mirroring the actual Android device. I know I've gotta be missing this somewhere.
There's an app called MirrorOp Sender that sends the video to a connected receiver/client, but it's VERY slow, and does not support the transmission of audio. MirrorOP Sender also requires the device to be rooted. Not like that's a huge deal to me, but perhaps to someone else.
Thanks in advance!

Xda tv did a review of an app that does this. Look on their youtube channel. To late for me to find it. I'm sleepy.

Thanks Here's the video I think you might have been talking about. I was unawar that TeamViewer allowed for the control of a phone FROM a pc. I thought it was only to control a PC FROM a phone. Thanks! But it should be known, though this is a seriously cool option. Audio still does not transfer over the wifi, only two-way video communications.
And so the hunt continues for something like AirServer and Reflection on Android. Don't necessarily nee to control it from a pc/mac, but would really like a wireless audio/video presentation platform for Android.
Bringing this post back to life in hope someone has a new idea. Can someone please explain to me why the ability to mirror audio and video from Android to a PC/Mac isn't available yet? Thanks

I am looking for the same, Although the other way. I think there are bunch of apps to mirror your Display but audio is not possible due to some limitations in Android framework.

I too was looking for an app like this and honestly sat there and started to wonder why i actually needed it.. can you explain a senario where this make sense and why an app that beams audio/videois not a good enough solution. hell i am with you on having more options including a featuer like airplay mirror, but maybe untill such application exists i can suggest good enough work arounds because like you i spent MANY MANY hours trying to figure out how do do this mirror thing with no dice. but i did find nice workarounds..
Holy hell, finally I think we might have a solution. I haven't tried it yet, but clearly, we aren't the only ones in need of this feature.

Looks promising. SplashTop 2 works other way round but is too damn pricey.
Just reviving this thread because I am also looking for the same thing. That app posted in the last post, BQScreen, as far as I know doesn't differ from the one the OP stated. Both apps don't transmit any audio, they just mirror the screen. MirrorOp is kinda cool because you can control it both ways, you can also use your mouse to click buttons on your computer to control your phone. Keyboard also works so you can reply to all your whatsapp msgs from your computer but at the end of the day it doesnt transmit any audio.
I use a galaxy note 2 and have never had the need to do this before because both the tvs in my house that get the most use happen to have a computer in the same room and I have them set up to just send the computer's screen to the tv screen and use unified remote/xbmc remote to do whatever I want, thus ending the need for allshare cast/apple tv devices which in my opinion offer an inferior experience than a full fledged HTPC.
The problem is that I have a tv in a room in my house that is getting more and more use lately and it doesn't have any way of showing netflix or youtube or all the files I have in my media server, etc. Basicaly, no access to the internet and I bought the tv right before all the smartv craze started. I am now on the search of a way to mirror my phone's screen (or anyones) to that tv in order to give that tv some added value. Of course I would still need to have some kind of reciever in that tv to get it to work so I really don't know what I am searching for. In the end I will probably end up purchasing an allcast dongle and use it specificaly for that tv, that way all tv's in my house would have access to all the media in my house and the internet but if anyone here has another option, I am all ears.
I have google tv and youtube connects nicely, i'm not sure if that's what your looking for though. I just connect and it plays the video on my tv.
Reviving this i case the 4.3 framework has changed to allow this functionality. If someone with knowledge of such things can chime in that would be great!
Bumping this topic, years have gone by and still no solution?
mirror from koush is the closest thing ...
it's meant for airplay so you can just install airserver on your pc
Chromecast
Google Chromevast
Looking for the solution. AirServer works on Windows and promises Google Cast support but it looks like it only casts audio from Chrome desktop tab. Google Play Music app discovers the chromecast device but music doesn't start
