On more than one occasion (renting google moves and enterprise email), I have been told I can't use an app because my device is rooted.
Is there a way to "trick" an app into thinking that the device is not rooted so that the app can be used?
P.S. I posted in Dev first but I think its going to be deleted. Well I am pretty sure so I am reposting here.
Does it ask for super user permissions, if so deny them and see if that works.
As far as movies, I think we need source to trick the os.

Neither app needs root permissions. They just won't run on rooted devices.
It checks something...anybody have an idea of what it checks?

Okay my question is simple, should I root my x10 now or wait for the 2.1 SE update.
Also does anybody have any info about the boot loader, I've seen various posts saying its been cracked, has it? And if not any idea how long before it is?

Would like to expand a little upon this thread. I am at the same position as OP was, and my only concern is that I heard some apps in the market are not available for rooted phone (instead of the other way around) due to some protection coding. Is that true? Are there any major apps that are particularly note worthy?

I haven't had any problems since my root, phone if anything works better, google and download an app called x10 root, this will root your phone without all the fuss. If you want to undo the root install universal androot and unroot it. They are not on the market though.

Like above said, be careful what you remove. Titanium backup is what I used. Freeze stuff first to test.

I am planning on rooting my GFs Huawei Ascend with this guide:

Now I already have a rooted Evo 4G and I know with that there are risks of bricking. Are there any risks of bricking by doing the steps in that guide? (Cricket version) I plan to freeze all the apps they recommended as well. Or is there any better way to root this?
Use Gingerbreak.apk to root it.

there is hardly a chance of bricking your phone by rooting. and i think z4root is the way to go (its easy to use, gets you rooted in under a minute)
What about superoneclick? I was reading it in the thread. It enables third party apps too. I haven't read about any deleted SD cards with z4 though. But I have with soc and Gingerbreak

well all rooting methods do the same thing: they get you rooted. its just that some are easier to do than the others and some work on certain android versions. i recommended z4root because all you have to do is open the app and hit permanent root. for superoneclick, you need to connect your phone to the computer, enable usb debugging, etc (its not much of a hassle, but why not just root on your phone?)

Also, is there any chance of data on phone (SDCARD / Contacts) being deleted? I saw in the GB thread or maybe SOC that SD CARD can sometimes get formatted.

I installed Xboarders stock OTA with root and superuser is there so I assume I am rooted. The first thing on my list is to get rid of FU***** car home I have no use for that thing. so how do I do it. If someone can tell me how to do it for general apps that would be great because there are a few that I dont think I want.

So there is a program in the market for it okay cool. Now I noticed that Xboarder included a few things along with the rom that have to be installed seperatly and the lg camera went back to stock so All I have to do is reflash the cammera and any of those tweeks that I might want right? Can I do it all at once or do I have to reboot each time I copy a .zip from my SD card?
And the other thing is I have been using mybackup pro because you didnt need root and it worked like a charm to restore all my apps and data I got titainium pro but do I really need it I noticed that now that I have root mybackup has a few extras for root users.
That brings me to another question what is the Dalvik cache? And should it be wiped. I get the impression it is kinda like RAM is that accurate? Sorry for all the questions but this is how I learn.

Android applications are basically java apps. Google didn't want to license java from Sun (now Oracle) so they wrote their own compatible version of it in a clean room environment (no intellectual property infringements but Oracle is suing them anyway) and called it "Dalvik." The Dalvik cache is the section of memory used by Android for java processes. Yes, it should be wiped EVERY time you flash a new rom or update any system app as a root user. Not clearing the cache can result in all sorts of problems including lockups, slowdowns and unexpected reboots. Keep in mind that after clearing the Dalvik cache the phone will take about five minutes to start up the first time (will be stuck on the boot screen while it is doing this) to rebuild the Dalvik cache. After the first boot the phone will be back to its incredibly short bootup time on subsequent boots. Do yourself a favor and clear the Dalvik cache.
Well now I see why I need titaium back up I answered my own question it is la multi purpose tool more than just backup. I noticed that you can do some damage if you uninsdtall certian programs I actually read that if you uninstall systerm apps it will stop you from getting any OTA updates in the future. I dont know how true that is anyone know? For now I just froze car home with titainium.

And I'd just search around in the Development Section... I recommend CM7 Nightly with the stock Kernel.
So now I downloaded Rom manager and I have some more questions first the first option is to flash cwm recovory didn't I do that already? Second I see an option to backup current rom is that the same as what I did In cwm before I did anything.g else? And if so will it overwrite my current one i ask because I don't want to loose my current one it is my stock backup. Sorry for all the stupid questions but I am really learning

Hey it is really quite simple just flash clockworkmod then flash xboardeds stock ota with root or any ROM that is pre rooted (most are) and boom you are rooted. A quick search in this fourm will tell you

NVFlash isn't impeded by this or any software update so you will always be able to use clockwork to flash new roms, pretty much all of which are rooted.

No. Root exists within the rom; if you change to a non-rooted rom from a rooted one you will lose root. However, unless you specifically go out of your way to unroot, a rooted rom will stay rooted.
Oh, and to answer your earlier question about Rom Manager, it's a totally unnecessary tool. There is nothing it does that you can't do manually from recovery. Ignore that it even exists.

Stay the hell away from ROM Manager...it's dangerous and frankly shouldn't exist at all.
If you want to use CWM, flash it to "real" recovery like you're supposed to.
Is it possible to unroot your phone without going back to the stock rom? My employer started offering wi-fi but only for unrooted devices. Thank you.
There have been miscellaneous discussions regarding hiding root, I would suggest looking into those first.
As well, if there is no software/app needed to be installed on the device there's no way that a wifi connection could detect root. So, how do they plan to find out if you're rooted or not?

They do have something that you have to install in order to use the wi-fi service. I hadn't seen anything about hiding root and will do a search on that. Thank you!

I work for a financial company so everything is extra secure.
I still don't understand why root access to your own device poses a threat so much that your employer doesn't want you connecting to wifi. Either way l, hope someone can help u hide ur super user status or connect to the network anyway

Because companies like that are paranoid and think you may accidently or on purpose give them a virus, or have them. Android is not affected by a Win32 virus, and it may not even be affected by a regular Linux virus (very unlikely but I don't know tons about the ins and outs on that level).

Not sure if hiding su would work. A simple app should be able to determine that you have su binary even without gaining access (IMHO).

Yes it's possible, I have CM9 without root. SuperSu has an option to remove root I think it's just the app and the SU binary not sure. I would assume that they don't want a user rooted because it's very easy to packet sniff if you're rooted and connected to someone's WiFi

So I have an update on this. The app that my employer is using for this is AirWatch. I tried using the Temporary Unroot option in Superuser prior to installing it but my phone still came back as non-compliant. I know that the unroot worked though because ROM Manager told me that the phone needed to be unrooted in order for it to work. I am thinking there may be another app on my phone that it is detecting and thus causing it to say it is out of compliance. I am going to keep researching but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

maybe it's detecting any of the apps on your phone that were granted su access....did you deny them SU access before hiding root?
I tried that and also uninstalled a couple of items but still no go. The only apps on the list are superuser itself and titanium backup as I deleted the others.

Thank you again to everyone for your help. We switched to the new plan at T-Mobile and I ended up buying the HTC One. With the offer to trade in my wife's Samsung Exhibit 4G (the I first one) for $100 toward the purchase from HTC I felt it was the right time to upgrade.
I just read on CyanogenMod's website that all CM stock ROM's allow the owner of the phone to control whether root access should be granted to an application. Will OnePlus One allow a general user to install a native C++ application that requires root access without hassle?

The OnePlus One will be delivered in official state not rooted.
If you want install applications with root requierement then you have to root first your device.
Rooting/flashing/modifiing the software is dangerous by nature so if you damage your phone by doing this no one will replace you it for free and not with warranty.
Rooting/flashing/modifiing your device is okay by OnePlus if you asking cause of warranty but when you damage it cause of rooting its not okay for example when you try overclock with a app.
I tried to explain it simple i hope all will understand and agree this.
There is also a thread in OnePlus One forum if you want take this information from the base just use search engine like always

I would think from what I've heard this phone should be as easy to root as a Nexus. It should be basic fastboot oem unlock for the bootloader then you can flash a custom recovery and superuser.
I root my devices, because I usually want to get rid of the unneeded CRAP that comes with most phones.
If OPO or any other mfg delivers a device without the bloat, I doubt I would need to root it.
The main reason I root is for a particular call blocking app that requires root and works on the system level. Main reason.

I need root at least for Titanium Backup as I'm a flashaholic... and always in need of a full backup of all the important apps I install everytime. But from what I read, it will be possible to choose whether to root or not. About bootloader I don't know. I'm also curious what recovery will be installed... Will they build their own version of CWM? And if yes, will we need to build something else?
