[Q] What format for SD card? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now hat we have 3.1 woprking on (telstra) xooms in Australia, could someone please tell me what format should be used on sd card, fat 32 ?

yes, fat32 may not be the only one that works but it will be best for compatibility on any platform (win, Mac, Unix)

fat32 definitely. And it should be formatted in another android device (phone). Formatting to fat32 in a PC often causes compatibility problems with the Xoom.

Fat32 works for me

SD Card format

Just got a class 6 16gb micro sdhc card for my AT&T Captivate (Galaxy S) and I was curious to know, what should I do with it, formatting wise? Should I just leave it as FAT32? Is it possible to format it to NTFS and use it in my phone for regular data/music/videos? Should I format it as EXT, and would it be better? I already did an EXT2 "fix" that used my internal memory, and I just basically want to use the card for additional room. Thanks in advance. I tried googling but wasn't satisfied with what I found, basically just a bunch of stuff about linux kernals and what they support and such. I have the stock rom.
Thanks again!
You can still access data/music/videos if your SDCard is formatted in FAT32.
As for which you should go with, that's upto you. If you are running an older ROM (<2.*) - you may want to think about partitioning your SD for ext2/3/4 (where your apps will be) and then FAT32.
If you are on a newer ROM (>1.6), you can format it as FAT32 and utilize the entire SD card.
(If you have any performance issues, you can always download Swapper and create swap-space for your phone to use, but you should be fine if you are running a Galaxy)
Thanks
Appreciate it. Always good to have some clarity.

[Q] How can I backup/restore my data in the ext2 partition?

Hi,
I am now using a 8GB SD card for my phone (around 6GB FAT32 and 1GB EXT2).
Now I am going to change into a new 16GB SD card (that I will create 1GB EXT2 partition soon)
Can anybody tell me how I can move the EXT2 partition from the old card to new new one using my pc?Thanks!
The only way I know of to do it with a pc would be to use a Linux distro, live or otherwise, then read the data from the ext partitions and copy it over manually if you can have both cards hooked in at the same time (one in a reader one in the phone).
Thanks but my Desktop is running Windows 7,
is there any alternative solutions?

HTC butterfly (can't copy file larger than 4GB to sd card)

Hi Guys,
Can I get help on how to copy a file larger than 4GB to SD card? I tried to read up and try a lot of stuff but still really lost here. I'm on Virtuous rom.
- I tried to format my card in ext4 but the phone don't recognized it. (I read stock rom don't support ex4)
- I tried to format the card in the device but it didn't work. (I think the phone format the card to FAT32 but not sure as windows just say "generic hierarchical" file system).
- I tried to format the card in NTFS and the phone didn't recognized it.
- Tried to format the card in FAT32 and can't copy the 5gb file because of the 4GB limitation.
- I tried to format my card in exfat but phone don't recognized ( I read that stock kernal don't support exfat).
I think you can only have your card formatted as FAT32 for the phone to recognize it. 4GB is a limitation of FAT32. So that's it, you're stuck with that limit.

It sucks when alot of devices depend on fat32.

[Q] SD Card 2nd ext partition no file delete - Windows8.1

I fomated a microSD with FAT (1st partition) and ext2/3/4 (2nd part.). 1st FAT works fine under every OS. Also ext (2nd) works fine on Ubuntu Linux PC. and it works on my Windows 7 PC.
But:
Under Windows8.1 with ext reader software like Paragon ExtFS I can read/WRITE but not DELETE files from the ext partition. ext2Mgr can not Access the partition at all. Reader Software like Linux Reader, ext2explore can read it
I tried it with a 4GB normal microSD and a 64GB SDXC. The micro SD is inserted into 2 different USB-readers (one with an SD2microSD adapter), one which can direct read microSD and on another PC into an built-in reader with an microSD to SD Adapter. Files and Partition have read/write permisions fr everyone.

[Q] SD Troubles

Recently my Shield is not registering SD card(s) . When I went to reformat for some reason it fails(I using the windows default reformatting program). Do you think I need to download a certain problem? Also is Lollipop causing my SD cards to act wonky?
Make sure you format the card with NTFS or FAT32. By default Windows formats into extFS!
