Recently my Shield is not registering SD card(s) . When I went to reformat for some reason it fails(I using the windows default reformatting program). Do you think I need to download a certain problem? Also is Lollipop causing my SD cards to act wonky?
Make sure you format the card with NTFS or FAT32. By default Windows formats into extFS!

Hi all,
I have been reading about an issue that I have: 'android.process.media' keeps stopping.
One of the suggestions is that there maybe a corrupted file on your external sd card.
The fix is to either delete the file; good luck trying to find which file. or to reformat the sd card.
Since I have the keyboard dock and several 32gb microSD cards. I plan on copying all my files to the other card and then formatting the card in question.
However, it seems on the Asus tablet, I am not given the format option. I had it on my Samsung phone before the upgrade to ICS.
But one thing I wanted to do after some other reading is to format the card the same file system that is used on the internal memory.
If I have my facts correct, the internal memory is formatted as 'ext' and external SD cards get formatted as 'fat' (or is that fat32).
I think it's formatted as fat, is for compatibility with your PC.
However, the article, said that 'ext' is much more secure and less prone to corruption.
So is there anyway to format the external SD card in this 'ext' file system and how would one do that process?
Thanks!
Rob
You would need to do it in linux or find a windows program that could do it, as ext is not supported in windows. Im not sure the microsd will work right in the tablet formated as ext and your windows desktop wont be able to access .
Ok, I read in another thread, they suggested to put the microsd card in the phone and format from there.
I did do that.
And I have another question, my phone is rooted and it contains CWM.
I noticed in CWM, that you can fomat from there.
There are options to format areas, like /system /cache and the one I am interested in is /sdcard.
My question is this, is this /sdcard the external micro SD card or is it simply the partition /sdcard which is Samsung's internal memory. I don't want to take a change and format the internal SD card.
I think once formatted the external SD card, but I was on a different version of CWM, I have a different one after the ICS upgrade that was recommended by someone helping me do the ICS upgrade.
Anyway, thanks in advance!
Rob
Whoops almost forgot, there is thread on xda about formatting memory in ext4. I would like to try that and see if the Asus tablet can read that if I get to format the external card in ext4 Still looking for a Windows program that will format in that mode.
/sdcard is internal. /Removable is external.
I would be surprised if you can find a Windows program that reads, let alone writes, any type of ext filesystem (and forget about anything less mainstream like JFS or ReiserFS). Microsoft only made Windows compatible with their own filesystems, FAT32 and NTFS.
I bought a Sandisk 64gb MicroSD, which came formatted in exFat. I could see this partition in both Windows 8 and Linux on my laptop, using an SD card adapter (plugged into the SD card slot).
I wanted to reformat it to FAT so that I could use it in my Cowon mp3 player and/or old phones, so I booted into Linux Mint and ran Gparted. I formatted to FAT leaving 32mb front and back (which I read was necessary to make sure Windows sees it), and in Linux all was well. I copied some files over, put it in the Cowon and it worked.
But... it no longer shows up in Windows. Neither while it's in the device (over USB), or when I put it directly in the laptop in the SD card slot.
I have tried using Gparted to re-partition the drive and reformat using a number of different options - including having no partition, a small FAT or NTFS partition etc, and nothing works. In Windows, not only does it not show up as a partition, but it can't even see it as a drive - Disk Manager doesn't show it, and neither does EaseUS.
I have also had the same problem with another MicroSD card, using the same steps - works in Linux and on the the device - Windows no longer thinks it exists.
Help much appreciated!

I assume you mean FAT32? I'm not sure what gparted calls them but FAT16 certainly won't work. Also, you should be able to use the entire 64gb. It sounds odd to me that you'd need 32mb before and after. Try using the entire card first and see if that helps.
If not... I'm not 100% sure but even if there was no partition info on the card then Windows should still display it in disk manager. Try using the same card reader that works with Linux on the Windows machine. I'm thinking the reader might be faulty.
this is my first time in this forum so please be kind.
so the problem is when I copied a movie into ny sd card, it suddenly got corrupted.
symptoms:
It displays sd card is damaged
when you click it, it suggest to format but it will not format.
tried connctng it to a computer.
tried to reformat but doesnt reformat neither fat or nfs. (not sure bout the term)
tried 3rd party apps to format but doesnt work
tried chkdsk and failed
tried using card reader and failed
tried recovery app but failed
the card cannot be read by pc/cp
white protected whn reformatting
shos 0byte/0byte size
8gb mmc
Kindly post your device details so that we might be able to point in the right help.
You might also want to do a low level format of the card on a PC with a Card reader.
The memory card format is generic format in G pro 2 and its not allowing the user to copy the file more than 4Gb.I have formatted the memory card to NTFS but when i insert the memory card in phone its asking to format again and getting changed to the Generic file format. Is there any solution for this issue any one has come across?
Why not to use exFAT? G pro 2 can use cards formatted with exFAT file system. I'm using 64gb exFAT memory card without a problem. Just format a card to exFAT on a computer.
Hi folks,
I have an SD card here that I was using for Adopted Storage but I've managed to get it stuck as an "adopted" card and can't seem to get it back functioning as a normal SD card
Long story short... I wiped the device the card was in but I didn't "unadopt" the SD card before hand - as in set it back to portable mode. While the device could recognise there was an SD card afterwards, it couldn't prepare it for use and suggested a card error or something to that effect.
I figured I'd just pop it in my laptop (Windows 10 x64) and re-format it but this didn't work. Failing this, I decided I'd "nuke" it using Minitools Partition Wizard. While this program had better luck identifying the card, could display and delete the partitions on it and could run the Wipe task - it had no effect on the card... the partitions just re-appear after any attempt to nuke them!
Has anyone any ideas about how I can restore this card back to a normal FAT formated SD card?
Just to clarify - I don't care for the data that might be on it... I just want the card back usable
Thanks
Recovering an "Adopted" SD Card?
The best solution for now would be to plug the sd card into a phone with android 6.0 so that the phone can read the card and then while setting it up,you can format the card as "normal "(the part where it asks you whether to use the card as in adaptive storage or for accessing files).

When I try this, I get "Unsupported SanDisk SD card"
I'm then asked to select either Portable or Internal and then Erase & Format but neither work. They fail at 20% and the message "Unsupported SanDisk SD card" is shown again
I'm a bit stumped. I thought surely the encryption used on adopted cards was only to stop external reads. It seems in this case it's stopping me from writing to or formating the card
Running out of options
