Hello.
I know similar threads can be found on related subjects, but I've easily gone over 25 threads and have made 0 progress.
I recently flashed {ROM} Ninja-07061 on my Inspire 4G and I'm absolutely in love with it. So far, it's my favorite ROM and I really want to keep using it.
The problem lies in the fact that I can't send or receive any MMS messages without first connecting to the mobile network, something I haven't had to do in all the non-cyanogen mods I've tried.
I've tried changing APN settings, using different messaging apps and pretty much all I know I can do without risking any damage to my phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there is anything I should post that could aid in solving the problem, please tell me, I am very very new to this entire android thing and I'm trying to learn as much as possible, but there are things that I still have no clue about.
Thanks in advance.
Possible Solution
I've had a similar problem with earlier versions of the ROM. I don't send enough MMS messages to know if this works, but at one point I had added an MMS-only APN. Something like what is mentioned in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983
Let me know if it works.
Thanks... unfortunately it didn't work :/
I've tried many different APN options and I still get the same results. MMS I received are stuck at "downloading" and ones I send are stuck at "sending".
The issue is with the way cm based Roms change the apn when disabling data. They disable the apn completely. While other stock based rom's don't disable the mms part of it. MMS use a little but of data and that's why you see the data arrows work when you send an MMS .
Okay, let me see if I understand.
CM based roms don't let me download or send MMS because they don't automatically connect to the mobile network to do it?
I noticed that I can send and receive while on the mobile network but not while disconnected (or while I'm connected to wifi).
Originally this worried me since I have a free MMS plan, which I believe should work separately from the mobile data connection, but I don't really know how it works (because I'm a total noob >.<).
I've read a little and it seems that MMS will be free, but they still require me to be connected to the mobile network. From what I can discern, this means that most stock roms (sense based) force a connection whilst sending or receiving an MMS and CM roms don't?
If that's so, is there a way to get the messaging app to force the connection, or will I have to connect to the mobile network every time I want to send/receive an MMS? I try not to have the connections enabled due to battery life and the fact that my data plan is capped.
Sorry for the wall of text, just trying to get used to the entire android scene :/

You got it. The only way I was able to do it is to activate data (which I normally keep off due to wifi everywhere and being on a prepaid plan) when I send an MMS. There are apps that control what can connect to data. I think apndroid is one of them.
The reason sense works is that it has its own built in MMS settings seperate from the apn settings.
Okay, guess I'll have to try some stuff out, at least I can rest easy knowing what's up now.
Thanks a billion.
No problem.

Hey,
I do not have a data plan with my carrier because virtually everywhere I go has WiFi, so I leach off of this. Because of this, I disabled the data connection so I don't wind up with any accidental charges. But, this leaves me unable to send or receive SMS messages. Has anyone found a good solution for this? Thanks!
If you cant send SMS thats not a data issue. If you mean MMS then:
Here (T-Mob UK) i have 2 connections, my internet connection & my MMS connection. If i receive a media message, the phone connects to the latter - free - and downloads the message.
If i send a mms, it connects again (still free for the data) and sends it. I get billed per mms sent, regardless of the ammount of data.
The internet connection isnt used for messages at all, but for everything else (and is billed per kb)
I'm talking about MMS, I mixed it up in the paragraph. I have to connections with AT&T: Media Net and ISP GRPS. So will just disabling the ISP GRPS connection allow me to send MMS without accidently connecting with Opera a day later on accident?
With AT&T, Data and Messaging are separate features. As long as you have a Messaging or Messaging Unlimited plan, you can send and receive text and MMS messages.
Yes I realize that, but my issue is accidental data usage after the message is sent. I have unlimited MMS and SMS but I dropped the data because most places I go has wi fi. The issue is that I might send a message and an hour later it downloads my email from the data connection either when there is wi fi or not.
I do the same thing with my Fuze, I also have AT&T and use NoData. I just tried to send a MMS and it wont even connect to send it. I even uninstalled NoData and it wouldnt connect. I have done a little looking aroud and with AT&T any smartphone you use has to have a data plan to send MMS, it is true that it doesnt need it but AT&T wont let you connect to media net with out it.

This is correct. As far as I am aware there is no work around for it either. I used email for the longest time instead, but finally decided it was time to get a data plan. Its actually pretty nice.
I think this is very wrong of AT&T to do, I pay for unlimited text and MMS and I cant even use it. I have no need for the data plan, at home I have Wifi I also have it at work and my half hour drive I dont need to be connected to the internet. The only company I know that will let you do something like this is T-Mobile, I did it with them when I had my blackberry.
Yeah it is a little unfair, although really the end user is at fault too for disabling the data feature to avoid accidental charges.
Side note- I thought that with Blackberrys you had to have the BB Data service as it is something RIM mandates or because its a licensing/contractual thing between them and the carrier.

You only need the service books for your carrier for mms to work on the Blackberry, t-mobile will give these out AT&T wont. For the Blackberry the work around is to put in a sim card that has a active BB data plan, it then downloads the service books and when you put your sim back in it will still connect with out charging you for it.
Can anyone tell me the settings to Connect to "Media Net" on AT&T? It would be really appreciated

have you tried at&t's support pages?
I have tried running mulitple different configs for a single APN on CM7 however none of them seem to work fully. I have searched and not found one with a solution. Any single apn works great for constant data connection (i havent noticed a speed change with any) i can send and recive txt. HOWEVER if i recieve a MMS i get the option to dl but it will just sit and the pic/video will never download. Is there a way to get this working? if i reset to the default apn where i have one for phone and a separate for mms i can dl just fine but then my data drops again. Is there a working config for a single APN so i can stay connected to my data and my MMS messeges will download. I send/recieve alot of pictures from my phone that are of my kids or items i am selling online. I need to have this feature work and really dont want to switch to another rom.
thank you for any help.
Is it possible to download MMS when mobile data is off and Wi-Fi is on? Everything I've read says not possible, is it a greedy carrier thing to use mobile data? Manufacturer? Android? I could have sworn I used to do it fine on HTC phones or Motorola's. I don't get any notifications about MMS of Wi-Fi is the only one turned on. Can we change it with a different ROM?

No it's strictly data. Think of it this way, texts are sent through your data signal and service so in order to receive that picture you download it through your data which uses that signal to retrieve it. Idk if I make sense but this is what I've been told.

Hmmm thanks. I wonder why i don't get notifications for it though

Try using the "textplus" app in playstore. You can send mms/text and even call voip via wifi connection.

Even better

The Verizon Message App didn't fix the phone to allow you to download pictures sent via text over wifi... Still have to turn off Wifi and turn on Mobile Data in order to get the pictures. I think this sucks as I just switched to Verizon from Sprint less than a week ago and with Sprint you could get those pictures on wifi or mobile data. Its just a ploy to make you use more data and there has to be a way around it as it is Carrier Specific and NOT Phone Specific...
I use the vzw msg app with avail data, and the textplus app via wifi. Working for me so far.

Doesn't appear to be as you describe it -- I've been struggling to get MMS picture messages through (from my Galaxy Nexus / toro / VzW) when the phone is also connected to WiFi. Digging pretty deep into the issue (a few people still working on it), it appears to actually be a bug (google this for a lot of eye-burning reading ). Anyway - taking a break from the detective work trying to figure out how to make it work, I installed Verizon Messaging on both my Galaxy Nexus and my Nexus 10, which - as you can imagine - has NO cellular connection. I'm also in my home office at the moment, in a finished basement with incredibly poor VzW network connectivity. After failing at being able to send/receive a picture MMS for the last few hours, installing Verizon Messaging seems to have done the trick: I can now easily send / receive picture MMS from the phone while it's connected to WiFi with barely any usable VzW network signal.

As long as both are on it will work. MMS goes through a Verizon data only server. That it what the problem is.
personaly, i don't get it. how hard would it be to have a 3rd party intercept an MMS and send the attactment via email thereby sending it via WIFI?
I have tried other apps like Textra, etc, but none of them can handle MMS properly. If I am on WiFi, MMS will never download or send. If I turn off WiFi, I have about a 50% success rate and they usually end up coming in hours later. I have tried different ROMs, different APN settings, different apps. It is a shame that T-Mobile sells this phone with pathetic MMS capabilities on their network. I understand it works fine with other networks, but T-Mobile is atrocious.
So, is there anyone out there using this phone T-Mobile who doesn't want to throw their phone in the ocean when dealing with MMS? I'd be interested to know your setup.
Thanks for your help?
not a single issue with sms or mms here, on tmobile in nyc. do you have the correct apn? or do you have it entered correctly? im using the fast.tmobile.com apn.
Same here no problems with native messaging app and textra
No problem with stock AOSP MMS or Hangouts or 8SMS. I did have trouble with another third party client but I don't remember what it was, think maybe Textra the same one you used.
No problems with MMS although I will admit I had some problems with MMS but that was the app's fault. I had to manually put the MMS because the auto detection wasn't working just yet. I'm using chompSMS. Textra SMS worked fine as well.
Ensure you have the right APN. Also the T-Mobile APN is fast.t-mobile.com the - matters.
No issues with Purity rom and MMS...
Go to Settings>Wireless&Networks>More>Mobile Network>Access Point Names and select T-Mobile. If there isn't one then add one with the name T-Mobile and the address as fast.t-mobile.com should fix your MMS issues

Which APN?
Are you on Android L? Sounds like the same issues I had. I tried all the APN tricks and it still wouldn't work. I would get them occasionally when off Wifi. On stock 4.4.4 I don't normally have issues with MMS.
When I send an MMS message my signal indicator shows data connected and with good signal but Chrome says my device is offline. Has anyone else encountered this issue and know how to fix it?
Edit #1: Why is MMS in it's own seperate APN in the settings I added the MMS into the APN for data and it may be fixed. Why would the default be wrong?
Edit #2: Added screenshots of APN & I T-Mobile is my carrier.
Edit #3: Forgot to mention I'm in the U.S. with a MHA-L29C636, still not fixed

Nobody has anything to say?
Not sure if this is relevant to your issue. My experience here on Vodafone in Australia is that when I receive an MMS, I have to turn off my WiFi and turn on mobile data, and then the MMS content will load. I assume it would be the same if I tried to send an MMS.

I have the same exact issue as these people who also have T-Mobile. Not quite the same as yours mine doesn't work even when connected to WiFi.
Hi to all. I am on Tmobile USA. On L29C636 rebranded from Chinese. Had the same exact issue with Mms after resting the device. So it happens after a reset. I solved the issue by deleting the APN and Mms settings and entered a complete new one based on Tmobile settings. Honestly it's the same but for some reason that's how it worked for me. By the way I had issues with native SMS mms app on the phone from day one. So I am using Textra and that was another work around for the Mms. Good luck
