[Q] Unroot before taking in phone for camera repair? - Thunderbolt General

Hi everyone, I got my thunderbolt back in May and have been very happy with it. Sometime in June I cracked my camera lens The pictures that I took were unaffected. Over time the crack has spread to cover most of the lens and although you cannot see crack through the pictures I take there is nore light coming into the light sensor than there is supposed to be and all the pics are washed out around the edges when I am outside. So my question is do I need to unroot before I take the phone in to get the camera fixed. Technically they don't need to turn on the phone but maybe they will to see if the problem is actually fixed. OR, they might just give me a replacement phone. Then what do I do?

You will get a replacement, they will send yours in to get repaired. Unroot just to be safe

definitely unroot!
no one wants a surprise bill for $600....

holy ****! it's that much? I'm definitely unrooting! thanks for the warning/advice. is there any way to save my clockwork backup so I can restore it after I get my new phone?

Unroot, go back to stock, or Verizon may not fix. They gave a freind of mine with a rooted D2 global a lot of verify and a bill when he took it in running a custom Rom forbthe replacement he got. He had keyboard issues.

Very high battery draw/camera issues

So a few days ago I checked my phone at work, had been off the charger for 4 hours not used at all and it was dead. Battery draw was ~300ma the whole time. The next day I noticed my camera wasn't working. Ill get an error message(activity camera not responding). Sometimes ill attempt to open the app and nothing will happen. This was all on gingerbeast. So I wiped all data and reflashed GB. Camera still doesn't work and battery draw is insane. I've since tryed AR, virtuous and cm7. For the record I've wiped battery stats, tryed without SD and sim card. I've been unable to find the cause of the high draw, although I think its related to the camera. Tomorrow I'm going to try and unroot and return to fully stock. Sorry for the long post any help is appreciated.

If your camera isn't working on any freshly installed ROMs, you probably have a hardware problem. As a last resort, try going back to the stock ROM. If your camera is still bad, then you'll need to do a warranty exchange with AT&T. The camera issues may very well be causing your high battery drain.
So HTC told me to send it to them within 30 days. And what do you know the next day my camera works fine! Should I still send It in or wait it out? Im also getting slight screen lifting in the corner so I might as well? I don't have a spare phone to use but I can buy some cheapo for a temp

Yes. That screen lifting will get worse before it gets better, so take care of it while you still can.

From what I recall, the inspire is about 20 times harder to replace the screen/digitizer, because the thing it honestly slapped together.
@ OP Sad part is if you do wish to repair it your probably going to have to go through HTC as I had some lengthy conversations with ATT and had to threaten to cancel and report them to the BBB on face book before anyone actually wanted to help me. MY phone was to the point where the bottom right of the screen had lifted and I could press on the bottom center and here clicking noises.
Edit: Try downloading watch dog lite to see if any apps are causing the battery draw before you unroot, a little troubleshooting can go a long way .

[Q] Unrooting Before Shipping Back to VZW

Unfortunately, I've encountered a hardware defect on my phone...
...the dreaded power button is getting stuck and becoming virtually unusable. The VZW Tech Support is sending me a CLNR device which should be here on Friday. (Apparently, they got rid of free overnight shipping.)
I'm unrooting tonight so I can play around with the new OTA over the next couple of days.
Is there anything I need to do to the phone other than un-root it so that VZW doesn't know it was rooted, thereby avoiding any future headaches and $299 charges.
Thanks!
Drew
Just to remember to remove your sd card before sending it back. If left in by accident they can tell some of what you have been doing with your phone.

Just make sure to follow the unroot process in the dev forums so you put your phone back to "stock". You want to make sure its back to "S-ON" but that's about it.

Actually just got the new phone today and rooted it this evening. Everything works perfectly fine and the power button actually presses down now. lol
The only annoyance is that the speaker seems to crackle if above more than 1/2 volume. Thankfully, I can hear just fine if below that. But if it becomes too bad, I'll have to do another swap.

Curious as to why you would bother unrooting software when hardware is the issue? Here's why I ask.
I buy all of my companies pcs and cell phones. If I wipe MSCRAP7 off the machine and it has a MB failure and I call the mfg and they send a new one i don't restore back to 7 why would you on the phone?

Because if I don't, theres a strong risk I'll have to pay full retail for this replacement even though rooting didn't cause the hardware failure.

Inspire backlight dim/flickering

I have recently encountered an issue where my backlight is dim (backlight levels are at it's maximum) to the point where I can't even see my screen if I'm standing outside during the day (didn't have that issue before), and at times it flickers. It's really irritating, because I have to wait until I am indoors/in my car for me to be able to see what's on my screen.
Is there a way to get this fixed without losing the data on my phone? I really don't want to lose my text messages, if at ALL possible, and I'm hoping it's not just something I have to live with for the life of my phone.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
There are apps you can use to backup your data. I use SMS backup for my texts and sync all my data to my Google account.

Yup. That puppy's goin' back. Start backing up.
No way it should be doing that, or that you should have to deal with it for the life of the phone.

The thing is, even if he's out of his 30 days with ATT, he still has a year with HTC.
This is undoubtedly a manufacturer defect. If he is rooted, he'll need to get it back to stock and s-On, or risk having the warranty voided due to the whole rooting thing.
Titanium Backup might be able to backup texts, but is it under warranty or did you buy it used?
Also this might be a stupid suggestion, but did you try with the auto brightness off? Maybe there is something flaky about the luminous sensor. Good luck dude keep us updated
LOL 'He' is a she, but thanks for the advice. Not rooted, and I haven't used the warranty, yet. My texts were the only thing I was worried about, but I did sync those to my gmail, so I'm good! Gonna see about taking it to the warehouse for replacement.

Messed up my tf ...need ur help

Ok so ... my little niece threw my tf on thw floor...it wasnt that bad ..jus a small fall. I checked for any screen cracks. There was none. I thought everything was ok. Later when i opened it up ... my wifi stipped working and there is some.heavy ass LCD bleeding going on. I did everything. Literally everything ....i even banged it ..lol. so my question here is is it a siftware problem. As far as i am cincerned ...its not. Its pretty much hardware. I heard of RMA. so do they charge for RMA and i am rooted with revolver rom ...... i dont think i have any insurance so r they gonna charge mme for RMA. PLS lighten me up with all the details. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
And can u guys help.me.out with unroot to. I dont even know how to use adb or what adb is ...but m.pretty giod at following instructions.
Sent from my hand by installing ANDROID in my brain.
my advice would be try flashing it back to the stock ROM (if possible) and if that doesn't fix your problems, then yes it is a hardware problem... If anyone asks don't mention that it was Rooted & ROM's before when you get it repaired

you have to pay to ship it to RMA and if they find that it is user damage, they'll probably charge you extra for repairs. As has been said before, try to flash back to stock and see if that solves it and, if not, then RMA it and good luck

Warranty exchange question

Okay so I was on Synergy 1.7 and Beans and I had GPS issues. The GPS would never lock on. I turned on Navigation and it would stay stuck on "searching for GPS". I Odined back to stock and same issue. So now I'm thinking I need to exchange it. Two questions tho.
1) will I need to contact Verizon or Samsung for the exchange?
2) I got this from a trade here in XDA. Will this affect me getting an exchange?
Thanks in advance

Well you can take it in to Verizon but I don't think they would exchange it, especially if you bought/traded/etc it from a third party. In my experience they would just claim it was abused or messed with by you or previous owner and offer to "fix" it for a price.
1. Verizon
2. I can't say.
Before you call up Verizon, though, I recommend you search the Synergy thread for a GPS fix. I remember someone working it all out, though I don't recall the specifics. I figure you'd rather go through that than swap devices.

As long as you didn't get it from them, they will most likely give you a hard time about exchanging it because if not from Verizon, you had to get it from a third party used :/

Hey Jay,
I have actually done manufacturers warranty claims on phones that I have purchased through a 3rd party (eBay) a few times with Verizon. I don't offer up where I got the phone, but they don't generally ask either (in my experience). The phone should still be covered under the 1 year warranty with Samsung, Verizon just honors that warranty for you and ships out a different refurbished phone in its place. As long as you put a stock image back on your original phone before sending it back in you shouldn't have any problems.
Also, I usually tell them right up front that I "went into a store and worked with their tech support people who gave me this number to call to get a replacement phone. Already did 2 factory resets and checked that I had the latest software update and it didn't help at all." That usually helps to bypass all of the generic tech support questions that they ask and just get down to getting your new phone.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Thank you so much. I'll try this out after I try a few other things to try to get my GPS to work. I'm currently completely stock so I'm hoping I find a way. So they send you the refurb phone and they give you like a box to send it back like Asurion does with insurance claims?

Yes, they send you a refurb phone and you keep your original battery, battery cover, sim, and SD Card. Then place the old phone back in the box and affix the return tag that was included with the replacement phone. It's super easy.

Yea, that is how Verizon handles it.
Does anyone know how Samsung would handle it if you try to go through them like the other guy suggested? I'm in the same boat and would rather return to Samsung than Verizon (I hate that Verizon gives me a used phone in exchange for a phone that I paid full price for and bought new). I feel like Samsung would want me to send the phone back to them first, which I cant really do because I need my phone and don't want to activate an older phone and lose my unlimited data.
