**Let me begin by saying that, as a newcomer to the forum, I apologize of this has been posted in the wrong place. I considered posting it in various HTC Fuze specific or Android subforums, but decided on this one as it is "(Android) Software...General". If there's a problem, please notify me and move this thread accordingly. I have no intention of creating problems.**
I've been doing a great deal of experimenting with Android on my Fuze, and (after trying XDAndroid 2.0.1) am trying to get 1.6 (Donut) working.
I've been using the (1.6) build on connect-utb.com. My phone is an HTC Fuze, or a Raphael 110. Apparently, it (the build) was last made/modified on 11/22/09, and (quoting from the download/version description):
"This Android package is based on the Current phhusson/leobaillard's release from 22.11.2009."
The problem I'm having is that, among other things, 1.6 seems to be VERY unstable.
A program (google maps/voice/android keyboard/marketplace/etc...) seems to crash every minute. I've become rather exasperated with it, and, after multiple manual restarts and re-installations, I've come to the oasis of mobile phone knowledge asking for assistance.
I'm confused (regarding 1.6), as this is supposedly the more stable build. I shied away from XDAndroid 2.0.1 due to the small bits of UI lag I was experiencing. 1.6 attracted me due to the claim that it's much faster (as well as having a couple more features working).
Can somebody give me some advice in regards to whether I might be doing something wrong? I'm sure I'm using the correct startup.txt, and don't quite know what the problem could be.
Granted, if somebody also has ways of optimizing XDAndroid 2.0.1, or providing an optimized build, I'd welcome that alternative.
In short, I'm looking for an Android build that will run very fast, and with exceptional stability, on a Raphael 110.

When I used that version, I found the graphics and response times (overall system speed) were somewhat laggy. Is that normal (for my phone)? Is there a way to optimize it?
I know that the HTC Fuze (Raphael) has a 528Mhz processor, as well as 288Mbs of RAM, which is on par with the HTC Magic - another Android phone.
Can you please provide some insight as to whether I could either 1)optimize Eclair or 2) download a stable 1.6?

Would that also include every build thereafter, or just the one from February 22nd?? I downloaded and am using the March 1st build in the hopes that, as it's the most up to date, it will be the 'best'.
Also, I saw something about enabling 3D in Windows Mobile (before launching Haret, I assume). It said you could do this by launching TouchFlo3D.
I booted back into WinMo, launched TF3D, and am now going to see if it's any faster.

You might have more luck posting your questions on the XDAndroid forum. I too would definitely recommend using the later Eclair versions, I remember a massive performance leap around two months ago when that version number shot up. The Eclair builds will obviously be updated more regularly too.
The graphics lag is completely normal for your Fuze. The reason isn't a hardware problem, it's because the drivers for the graphics chip and just about everyting else in your WM phone need rewriting for Android, and they haven't been optimised yet, hence them not running as smoothly as on phones whose drivers have been written specifically for Android by HTC themselves.
My Touch Pro would require a soft reset every ~5 minutes with the XDAndroid 1.6 builds, but I could probably use it for 24 hours now on Eclair without it crashing.
If you're still unsure, why not just give Eclair a go? You can always switch back if you find it slower. As for your search for a build "that will run very fast, and with exceptional stability, on a Raphael 110", I'm afraid that the development just hasn't got there yet, especially for the stability. Relative to Windows, it's still miles off for that.

Thanks for taking the time to write this.
Since my last post, I have indeed given Eclair a second chance, and find it performing a bit better than I remember. Granted, I'm using the 'standard' home screen, not the Home++ one (if that makes any difference).
Also, thanks for clarifying that it's the graphics drivers that are hindering performance. That gives me hope, seeing as it's (more or less) a software issue that can, and hopefully will be, fixed.
While I would love to see the OS become faster one my phone, right now my biggest issue lies in battery life. Past that, it's camera capability, and then GPS. I'm also fiddling with a 3g/data issue, but I'm sure I'll work that out. I have never used bluetooth for the years that I've owned a cell phone, so I'm not too worried about that.
Honestly, though, I've been using Eclair for the past few days with very few reboots. I've never has any major crashes (usually only one when I boot into android and it says the latin keyboard process has crashed), and thus haven't had to reboot out of "necessity."
In short, I have given it a second chance, and am very thankful for doing so.
I wouldn't worry too much about battery life, GPS and the camera as they're the most commonly asked about things on the thread. The developers are well aware of how many users want these working, and I'm sure that if the project continues to be updated, these things (particuarly battery life) will be prioritised.
I asked svetius to open a board for Raphael Android Development, and he has very kindly done so. In the future, you'll probably get more replies here.

so now that there is a froyo leak out for our phones, is it stable enough to update to it? i was thinking of going for the cognition v2.2 froyo, but obviously dont want a ton on unreliability problems lol...so whats the status on that?
I can't speak to cognition, but I have been running Froyo since it came out a few days ago (no root or lagfix) and it seems fine. Some have complained about lag - if it is there, it is not near as bad as stock 2.1. Others have said the browser has a memory leak - i have not run into that yet either.
Overall the plusses outway the minuses. I am happy with it so far. I have not had any crashes or FCs and the GPS is no worse then JH7. Unless i find a show stopper issue, I will keep it for now.

I would call it Beta. There is still stuff that looks like they ported the i9000 Rom over and they still need to do a little clean up. Some EU spellings of things, some minor bugs, Wireless AP and USB tether are present.
I think this is the 2.2 Captivate Base that they will build from. A solid Beta, but not the final.
It has been running fine for me. Once Rom Manager gets updated things will be great. Only AppsInstaller doesn't work for me but its not really that big of a deal.
This FROYO is actually very stable in that everything works perfect.............Have been running for 24 hrs barely so theres a bit more testing needed but yea its definately a GO . At first i got a couple of force closes on several of stock apps like music, phone, and a couple of others but only happend once and never happen again kind of like if it was still setting up or something but besides that and some odd color changes 2.2 is stunning i notice an overall snappier feel market 2x quiker (i dont use lag fix because it ruinned my OS a few times thats just me) and with root enabled the limitations are infinate
I've only been using it for half the day, but I have to say that samsung fixed most of the little annoying problems with this phone. We finally got the phone we paid for with the exception of lag. It's still there, but the one click lag fix solves that. All in all,i recommend the update. Especially with cognition.

I'm running the most recent release of Cognition 2.2 for Froyo with the built in one click lag fix. (Even though I really didn't even need to run the lag fix, its that smooth) It is sick. Phone is just silky smooth in all aspects. The only thing I noticed was that flash was slowing the browser down a little, but only on super large pages with tons of plug ins like huffingtonpost so I set the plug in setting to "on demand" and now I can't find a page large enough to slow down the browser. I put it next to my friends new Iphone4 and it was embarassing how much faster the Captivate was loading pages. Only things that arent working on 2.2 yet are titanium backup, which you really shouldnt use for this anyway since you don't want to install 2.1 apps on the 2.2 update, and Rom manager, but I fully expect that with the level of support we've seen from the Rom dev, he will have it updated in no time as well as an update for Titanium. Overall, I almost feel for the first time that I no longer need to scour the forums looking for ways to improve the phone. It is just sick (have I said how sick it is?) how well it runs with Cognition. GPS works perfectly, and I don't mean just getting locks. I put it on my dash and have been driving around a lot for two days and My Tracks is right on. My position does not drift off the road AT ALL anymore. No more being on other streets and otherwise just drifting around all nilly willy. GPS Test shows at least 6 or 7 locked satellites and usually 9 or 10 locked. I don't think I would get better performance out of a Garmin or Tom Tom. It does get better sat locks on the dash with a clear view of the sky rather than in the cup holder in the center console however, but that is to be expected with any GPS device. Even so, it was still fully functional in the cupholer.
I installed by Odin one click back to stock, did a GSM Master Reset via the phone keypad *2767*3855# then rooted, put the downloaded Cognition 2.2 file on my internal sd card, and then installed with Rom Manager, (works because I'm back on 2.1 at this point) I HIGHLY recommend this. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all the spare time I just freed up by not having to flash my phone a million more times
P.S. If you can, donate a few bucks to DesignGears for the work he has done with this. It's totally worth it! It's amazing that he's gotten a ROM out so fast with the release and he is constantly working on, upgrading, and tweaking his work to make it better. (which is why im sure I'll be flashing again in the future /cry)

What does that have to do with Froyo as a stable OS?
I just opened Cnet tv and I could play the video.

I can play them. Just click the names. 2.2 stock 'beta'.
Go to pocketnow.com (full desktop version) and click through a few articles there. Muhahaha. Scrolling will become ultra slow, other apps will be forced out of memory, and you may even get a browser crash if you're lucky. That's the memory leak bug.

Go to the site and open your task manager. Is the browser not using about 100 MB of memory? Memeory leak.
The FroYo build is stable and fast. I like it.
I rolled back. It is stable - but some of the underlying features are broken. Forwarding emails does not include any comments you make. Google contact groups now work, but the listed names map to the wrong contacts.
Some nice improvements overall, but some issues are show stoppers for me. It won't crash though - or at least it didn't for me.
Has anyone tried enabling jit on this? I know it was attempted on 2.1 but no one made it past the lock screen before it bootlooped on the galaxy s. 2.2 is made for jit & it should be more stable now right? All I could find in the forums is how to do this for other phones like the droid x (sounds pretty unstable though) & im too much of a noob to figure out how to apply that to my captivate to try it.

Froyo has been pretty stable for me, and certainly better overall than 2.1 was. It still needs work to have what I would call a well-polished feel, but overall I find it to be an upgrade.
I'm hoping it is a beta, and we'll get an even better one soon

JIT is already enabled.
I kinda think now. that this device was over developed for an under developed os platform. think about it, this device has preemo hardware right yet googles apps are half a$$ working and some arent working at all. i think mabe google needs to step up their app development skills a lil then mabe all these new devices will play nice. its been said that apples apps are better quality... i hate apple lol im currently running a moto droid 1 over clocked to 1.2 on pete's bugless beast 2.2 froyo rom and let me add my phone works ten times faster then the galaxy tab this gtablet and the ipad?? how??? i havent a friggin clue. it dont make sense. android is awsome bottom line this device has potential will that potential be wasted?? i hope not for. what do u guys think.

The true answer to why Google will not support this is that Honeycomb is their OS for tablets. The hardware manufacturers could not wait to release this hardware (to try to get an edge on the competition).
Currently, Google will not support and will not allow Android Market to go onto a device that does not fit certain criteria.
One of these is that the device MUST have a cellular radio.
Since most of these tablets do not, Google cannot and will not allow Android Market on it at this time.

Google doesn't support wifi only devices yet. I think with android 2.3 we will see a change with that, and that is when we will get this device to shine. It will take time for the hackers to work everything out. It took weeks/months for pete to get his rom to where it is today, and as great as he is, he had a lot of help from the huge DROID community. The community for this gtab is small but growing, and will get better with time. What isn't working fo you? I am on CM6 and got most everything working for google apps except ones where the hardware is limited like GPS/Phone. I have video conf, email, contacts, calender, gtalk, angry birds, flash, overclocking, n lots more etc...

i havent purchased it yet. but i want one so bad ive looked at a few of the cheaper tabs and this one looks like its got the best quality for its buck. the galaxy tab is over priced and seems to be less snappy, well from the videos ive seen of it in action. im not a 100% TECH SAVOY but ive rooted my droid and updated its build prop. in order to root this device u used the update.zip format or do i need adb shell to do it.

i dont use setcpu bc depending on some of the kernels you use in(in my case im using slayhers 1.2 ghz kernel) has and interactive governor built into the kernel.. and im using the compcache.zip . i use terminal emulator to execute the scripts to enable compache. go to peter alfono's main site and u will find all the detailed help you need. good luck man..

I'm using overclock widget, I saw it mentioned in another thread...some say it woks some don't, not sure if I notice a difference...I'm just trying to get this stable before I can even think about benchmarks.

I used Z4root and rooted my Gtablet with one click. I didn't need an update.zip or adb shell. So don't let the rooting hold you back because if someone like me (no programing or hacking expericence) can do it you surely can.

i didnt know z4root worked on the gtab i saw it used to root the galaxy tab.. thanks man i think im gonna give it a shot. ill post back if i get one for sure.
i have been an owner of the Transformer for just under a week, to be honest i think its a let down.
Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
I could go on.
I know the OS is relatively new, but i cant buy that. The tablet cost me £415 with dock, If i was a normal customer, (the everyday user) i would take it back to the shop as i would think it was broke.
My last point is the constant crashes, it even locked up while trying to shut down.
So please please please tell me there is an answer, i so want to like it, as the concept is brill, i based buying this on my xperia play, i love the os, but honeycomb maybe the problem here!

First of all, what android version and firmware build are you running and are you rooted? Secondly, have you performed any OTA updates since you bought your TF? Before I installed a custom rom on my TF, I myself have experienced serious lag and slow down due to multiple OTA updates. As with any pc based platform, its typically best to do a full wipe and perform a clean install to have it running at its peak. Before I took the route of a custom rom, i did a full wipe and fresh install and could immediately tell the difference in speed. So my suggestion is that you take that route first. Also, if you are interested in rooting and installing a custom rom, be advised that starting with the B70 revision, ASUS changed and locked down the bootloaders and they are currently unrootable at this time...which means you won't be able to install a custom rom. Find your S/N and if it starts with B70 or higher, then you won't be able to root at this time.
I have not had to many FCs, either stock or on Prime. Most times that I get any problems at all are in the stock browser, and usually thenjust a matter of slowness and the occasional "FC or Wait" prompt; particuarlly on more 'involved' web pages. Loading pages are also fairly sloow at times but still faster than my phone. My phone uses Opera for tremendous inprovement over it's stock browser.
Don't know about the 720p, haven't tried and don't know what program you used. Out of box is rather minimal audio/video playback as far as I noticed.
General performance wise, this thing beats a number of x86 systems I've had, espiecally while compiling C/C++ code.
If it's not something closer to the hardware, doing an nvflash to a custom rom might be worth trying but it can be an irk to deal with nuking everythiing you have stored, backups or no.

Get DicePlayer - best player around, supports HW acceleration and 720p is good as well (compared to others) - thanks to tegra2 plugins. Not free tough.

Higher resoltioun and tegra2 issue AFAIK (might be wrong).
Check to make sure you've received all updates on your tab

You are correct, custom roms are always going to end up being preference. If you are able to root, the best way to start off this endeavor is to visit the posts of all 3 major roms for the TF in the development section. Find out what each rom offers, and make your decision based off of that. You can always try out each rom to see which one you like better.

i here good things about opera, but i dont like the way it loads (waiting for the page to load before displaying) is there anyway to disable this feature?
Sometimes you just want to click on a link i dont really want the whole page to load!
Asus changed the bootloader not too long after they started making the B70 revisions. So there is a very small window of chance that your TF can be rooted. You can always try, but the chances are slim. I can't answer your Opera question...I don't use Opera.

There is no option for this in Opera Mobile; I should know, it's what I use off the phone next to me .
Opera Mini is probably the same, but I would highly doubt it would support that feature even if it wasn't.

Anyway, just accept you got suckered in to all this EEE Fad, iFad marketing BS. The Tegra 2 is a $5 PoS SoC... kind of like the PoS Atom CPU.
Tabs are fairly useless, but you wanted to waste some money
Oh if you disable flash in the stock browser it's speed is good.
I'm stuck with stock too ... REALLY FARKING pisses me off that I'm locked out of my own device.

Lol, this man has made the greatest mod to his TF!
But yeah, try running a custom rom (if you can) and see if your problems are still present. If so, contact Asus and maybe they will give you a replacement, could simple be some hardware malfunctions.
well i tried to root using the all in one tool, when trying to backup and root i kept getting an error cannot boot to pad or something like that, so for now ive had to admit defeat and wait for some bright spark to hopefully crack the new bootloader :-(

Just wanted to bump my original thread to say after alot of complaing from me i can now say i am a proud owner of the Asus Transformer TF101.
Thanks to the fact i can now root and install custom roms.
After a few weeks of trial and error, i tried, revolver, Prime and KRAKD.
The latter for me was easily the best so so smooth, OC 1.504 i tried same on the other Roms, but with KRAKD i had no issues and its just so much quicker in my opinion.
One issue that exists in all the custom roms is that the xbox controller doesn't work until you change the kernel. Weird.
Brwosing is more of a joy and with ICS on its way my tablet experience is looking up!
Still tempted by windows 8 but we will wait and see.

If you have a PS3, you should be able to use a Sigaxis controller using the Sigaxis application on the market as well.
Hi all! I'm a noob to the site and a noob to smartphone modifications, so please forgive me for my questions and concerns. I've used forums for years on many topics and found the knowledge base to be incredible, so I hope you guys will help me out, too.
So, while my Skyrocket has generally worked very well for the past 2+ years, I have always felt it's not living up to its potential. I've read numerous threads on many forums to see what my fellow Rocketeers were doing. I think I've come to the conclusion that flashing a new ROM is the way to go, but I am a bit wary since I've never done this nor know anyone who has. My thinking goes along the same lines as my experience with computers... If you buy a Dell, HP, etc., you get the garbage that the manufacturer bundles in along with Windows. If you wipe the HD and install your own clean copy of Windows, you can usually get better performance without all that other stuff. Hence, the idea for a new ROM for the phone.
A few things have me wondering, though... There seem to be more ROMs available than flavors of Linux! I know choice will end up being a personal thing. My goal is really simple... I just want a clean OS that is stable, efficient, and runs the basic functions I am accustomed to. So, I am not looking to experiment or push the envelope. I want a phone that doesn't crash at the worst possible time, and one that can actually make phone calls! I assume that I will still be able to use the Google Play store to download apps (after installing the plugin thingy). My phone is from AT&T and is unlocked. Will it say unlocked after flashing a new ROM? Will Visual Voicemail still work? I occasionally use FoxFi to create a mobile hotspot. Will I still be able to use it? Or do other ROMs already have this feature unlocked (or bypassed)? I use apps on my phone mostly for email (Yahho/Gmail), calendar, FB, Instagram, YouTube, taking photos/video, viewing forums, and the like, besides making phone calls. In other words, what should I expect from a new ROM? How will things be different? I'm really trying to gauge if this is a worthwhile endeavor for me.

The Skyrocket, to me, was always a case of OEM software that limited its potential. If you really sit down and tweak it, custom ROM, new governor, overclock, it's a beast of a phone that can still keep pace today. You'll have to balance performance with battery life--overclocking and switching to a more aggressive governor doesn't do you any favors there, and some ROMs are better about battery life than others. It's a great phone with a lot of life left, though, much more so than the vanilla S2 because the Rocket has LTE capability.
To hit your other questions, any app that is available on the Play Store will work. If a ROM needs a second gapps flash to get the Play Store (along with everything else Google ships) back, that will be made available and is a very easy install. I've never unlocked a phone, but I don't believe that a new ROM would lose that. Wait for someone else to reply, but I'd be shocked if it did. As far as what you want, there's a ROM to suit any desires. Most ROMs are pretty basic and look and feel like you'd expect a Skyrocket to. Some are designed to feel a little more like iOS, some are designed to be stripped-down (and faster as a result), and some are based on stock firmware and very closely replicate the original experience. It's up to you to read through the dev forum for the Rocket and pick the experience that's best for you.
As far as how difficult it is, spend a couple hours reading about flashing, how it works and why it works. Once you have that basic understanding of it and can follow a few simple instructions that are pretty universal across ROMs, you're set.

One piece of advice: when you pick a new rom from "Android development" read the WHOLE thread associated with that rom, with special attention the the first couple of pages. Make sure you understand the process and any potential pitfalls.
First rom I tried I spent probably six hours reading. It was worth it.
Success!!! I now have the latest CandyKat running! It ended up being not too bad at all. Now I need to figure out how things are different from the AT&T Jelly Bean this replaces.

I have Kandykat. It seems to be a good solid rom. The Google Now launcher is buggy though. I changed to Nova launcher. Other than that it's been fine.
Thanks for the tips, Chris. I've been using Launcher3. What's the difference between these launchers? Everything seems to be running fine on my rocket now. Any tips on increasing battery life? Any tips on some nice customization?
Google Now launcher seems to have the annoying habit of forgetting the screen setup (app positioning) during reboot. Launcher 3 also exhibited the same problem. Launchers are a matter of taste, but Nova launcher seems solid and looks right to me. YMMV. It's easy to try a few.
