FML, I soft bricked my phone this AM - HTC Inspire 4G

I dl'ed the Nightly 123 for CM7 this AM around 4 then proceeded to make a nandroid then flash it. All hell broke loose from there. Bootloops, stuck @ white HTC screen, couldn't restore my nandroid. All was not bueno.
I ended up having to flash fresh and go through the displeasure of completely reconfiguring my phone. What a PITA. This is my first ever mishap w/ a flash and first ever failed nandroid. The md5 passed the check, it would go through the process of restoration but would get stuck @ the HTC screen.
Ughh, is it Friday yet?

The price we pay for freedom!!!...or something like that...just trying to cheer you up . I've soft bricked the phone a few times, but every time, as in your case, recoverable, if a PITA.

I have yet to "pay my dues to the Android gods" in this department.
Sooner or later it will happen, no matter how prepared one thinks they are.
And when it happens to me, I'll end up breaking all my own rules and posting without searching first, and get a taste of my own medicine for having been mean to some new people in the past.
And those people will bask in the satisfaction of the payback I'll be enduring.

^LOL
Glad you recovered it .

I have boot looped mine once a few weeks back and just 2 hours ago I Installed a UOT kitchen on a fresh install of Ninja, which I had completely configured and had forgotten to do a nand, which unfortunately broke the status bar (it would error out: Status bar has stopped working) No Status bar at all and it threw up the error like every 2 minutes. Lol

Man I couldn't even restore my nandroid that I do religiously prior to every flash. I has hacked to say the least.

I haven't bricked my Inspire (yet) but I have done a number on my old captivate as well as a few (don't hold it against me) iphones. In each case I was able to get the device up and running again. I think the worst part of the ordeal is when crap hits the fan after we know we did everything right.

Or when "I'll just flash this new rom before I go to work. It only takes a few minutes." Then something goes wrong boss gets a call "I'm gonna be late I have explosive diarrhea." .

Bahahaha!
I almost called in but decided to do.it while I was working. It only took three frackin hours but it's done.
And the lesson here kids is don't assume that everything is going to go right if you choose to try and flash/update a rom before work.

I think it had something to do with the rom Matt was running, but i'll let him expand on it if he drops back in.
I don't think you can actually fry it over oc'ing can you? Wouldn't it just freeze up or reboot first? Maybe overvolting or something.
Clearly, I don't know **** about the subject.

An excessive OC run for extended lengths or fully loaded(100%CPU usage) will kill it. Phones don't have the means to dissipate heat like a PC w/ a good cooler. If it didn't kill the proc, it could take out the mobo.

I gotcha. That makes complete sense. The freezing or rebooting I was thinking of would probably be from using settings that the phone straight-up wouldn't handle first shot, and wouldn't account for a setting that the phone would at least *start* to run, but after a prolonged period of time, generates so much heat that **** starts burning up due to the lack of ventilation.
Ouch.
Thanks tx...

Do like I do TX...keep a few different backups...
My backup folder typically looks like this...
2 different backups of Gingerbeast
1 of my straight up stock right after I rooted my phone
1 of A sense 3.0 ROM
Of course this does take up some space buy It saved my a$$ a couple times...

Yeah Scott I had it set to 1.3ghz but the voltage was really high im assuming and eachtime I was on the phone or just playing a games,it got to 106°-110° so damn hot I couldn't handle holding it. It was the rom because after my issue, suddenly a flashable fix for voltage was released and many users experienced over heating issues after a release was made. U gotta be careful with the new guys that are creating their first roms, and ill never go back to using that rom again. I took it to.at&t and even the guy smelt the sweet burnt smell. And the over heating happened at night when I plugged it in.

If you did brick there is a thred in the dev's that can and will show you how to unbrick and you can shop and decide on witch Rom you won't to go with look at it this way you have the best of both worlds good luck

Had an issue today similar to yours, unlocked the bootloader today and kept the stock rom. Tonight I started deleting the bloatware, mainly using root explorer, no issues really. Used titanium backup to "force remove by exploit" I think its called. Did that and phone went black, tried powering back on, pulled battery etc, nada.
Ended up plugging device to usb charger and booted into bootloader, rebooted from there and its fine.
I ran into this tonight. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198585
Short story -- Clockwork Recovery is bugged and won't charge the phone. Your battery level is too low to power on, so you need to use another method to get some power into it.
I did this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15034469/tmp/recovery_fail.jpg
And yeah it's a lame problem.
Ahh, so this is not really a bricked phone, but a case of CWM dead battery! Good to know, as its an "easy" fix then. I was afraid that the phone, simply S-off and perm rooted, had somehow crashed permanently.
Matt
Straight Bricked
For me its not the battery, when tmobile sent me a new sensation i used my old battery, sdcard and sim and the battery still had around a 75% charge. I cant boot from usb i cant do anything. Its completely dead.
As for what i did?
I had been flashing multiple roms and kernels for 2 weeks. Overclocking, undervloting bla bla. No issues a wipe and flash couldnt take care of. I think i did a wipe and flash of a new rom and thats it. Dead. Wish i could remember exactly what it was. I guess im gonna mail it back since i have a new one and probably get charged full retail if they see its s-off and root.

Ahh..So it wasnt the silly CWM ordeal then. That sucks!
Try to pinpoint what you were doing right before this happened. Were you wiping something? (what were you wiping) Were you flashing a ROM? (What were to flashing)
Try to provide more details, as I am sure some of the devs here will be looking to jump all over it shortly.
EDIT: Were to making sure to check that the ROM you were flashing was meant for your version of the phone as well as the files not corrupted? I know it sounds silly, but its something to rule out.
Matt
happened to me too on two batteries. I believe that it is due to overclocking the cpu. because the battery stats are calibrated for a slower CPU speed, it drains it past the failsafe point to pure failure. CWM will recognize CPU for the given ROM. i flashed back to S-ON and regular RUU 1.29 and charging my batteries again for the correct CPU + battery stats. wish me best of luck
Wow, am i that stupid
Not positive but i think i figured out what i did. Something really stupid.
I think i flashed: [Desire] InsertCoin CM7/STOCK 1.1.0
So am i fully bricked?
Gotta put the phone in the mail tomorrow.
Do you think they will see that its s-off or if its (truly) bricked can they not?

They'll know....
actually... having worked in a few cell phone repair / refurbish facilities... i can tell you that they won't even look. they just plug the phone up to their bench and it overides everything and does a fresh flash. from there they just replace plastics to make it look like a brand new phone. if they are unable to flash it at the bench, they replace internals. so relax... no one will know or care what you did to it. these places get thousands of phones a day. and each tech at the bench has a quota to get through.
Thanks for your feedback guys. Shipping it off now...

Should i be worried? What could cause this?

Sounds like the radio to me. That's the thing that will suck up power the worst if it can't get it's crap together finding a signal, even to the point of heating that thing up. Mine starts cooking if I tether it and watch movies on it. Never had boot loops though, and I use the 1.70 radio for weeks.

I don't really know what to describe the "brick situation" we were having back in the day with the first leaked gingerbread as. Technically, it's not REALLY a brick because many of them could be fixed. It was more of a boot-loop issue. That whole situation muddied the waters of what defines a brick, but before that I always understood a brick to be a completely useless device beyond any help. Whether it could be powered on to view the hboot S-on or S-off state, I don't know because thankfully I've never had that problem.
There's always the option of electrocuting it until it won't power on though. Take an electronic lighter, remover the piezo igniter, and use that to zap sensitive parts of it's guts until it never worked again. That's like a few thousand volts. Not much inside there will survive that for long. (Yes, I really do sit around thinking about how to destroying things in undetectable ways.)
it's funny because everytime i hear about someone getting insurance for their cell phone i think "lol.. sucker!" but broke 2 phones so far and had to "craigslist" like crazy to find replacements at decent prices.

When the boot loop of death thing happened people were still able to get into hboot. So from there you would just flash an RUU and get back to s-on. If it truly is the same issue people were having the phone will be s-on after the RUU, but it will still just bootloop. If you are using the patched hboot I don't know if you would be able go get back because I don't know if fastboot was functioning.

Infuse DIED!

Well after reading the latest GTG V2.2.2 thread changes today I decided to give it a go as I have really been having a ton of problems with my phone since new. Mostly battery issues but also weird stuff since loading Infused 2.1.0. I had loaded 2.1.0 twice after going back to completely stock but the weirdness persisted. So I backed up all my stuff tonight and then fired up Odin and loaded all the necessary stock files from GTG's Ultimate Unbrick which i have done many times. It started right up and then it stalled trying to establish a connection and this has never happened before. I waited a while to see if it would just go anyway but after 30 min. it was still sitting there and had not done anything in regards to loading up any new data to the phone. So I closed Odin and hit the power button on the phone and it came back up with an icon for phone to computer connection so i tried Odin again and once again it started up and tried to load files to the phone but again stalled and sat there. So i waited again for a while and then stopped everything and pulled the battery hoping that the phone could be brought back into download mode but unfortunately it is completely dead now. No lights no power up nothing??? So I guess I got my answer to my constant problems and strangeness it was the phone itself that wasn't any good. So now i have to go to the store tomorrow and negotiate a replacement phone I sure hope the fact that I spend a ton of money there with my clients corporate phone account will get me some good will and they will just swap it out for a new one. We will see as i really liked this phone it just needs some fixing.
I am a bit bewildered that AT&T/Samsung would release a phone with so many bugs in it. The completely stock phone was buggier than all hell and was only marginally better once I updated to a custom rom. The bluetooth has never been right from day one stock or custom it would constantly disconnect my headset and the GPS was the crappiest phone GPS I have ever had and I have had a bunch of them in the last few years. Here's hoping that the GB update fixes and resolves all of the bugs in this very nice phone.

Yeah you have a crap phone. But since you modified the software (god forbid on something you OWN!!!!) Samsung or AT&T(/Rogers) won't touch it. They probably have something to scan for modified software at the door that will shoot you in the foot if you try to walk in.
I've used unbrick at least 5 times because the 2.0 Infused ROM kept messing up my phone. Worked perfectly every time.

Actually, from my understanding, they don't really question you if you bring in a phone to be replaced. If nothing else, do like what everyone did when the Galaxy S line came out and tell them that it crashed during an OTA update or when you connected it to Kies. Or tell them that you were having issues with it freezing up a lot recently and when it frozen the last time, you pulled the battery and it wouldn't come back on.
There is no reason for them to everyone know that you had custom software on the phone.
Good luck.

Have to agree with Entropy would say u just got a dud.
Had no issues getting my phone replaced after installing custom rom on it. Went the extra step and soft bricked it and made sure it wouldnt boot past samsung screen before taking it to store. (My micro USB was borked) Had to wait on replacement phone but they sent me home with my phone and unbricked it and used it till new one arrived and bricked old sent it in and never heard anything about it afterwards.
I've used this method many times and never had an issue. (May not work if you get zero lights, etc, but worth a shot)
Just make sure you're not on Windows XP

Would have sent it to you no problem except that i need to return it to AT&T to get a replacement phone. Sorry I couldn't help.
I went to the AT&T company store that I do all of my bsiness with both personal and corporate. I showed my AT&T girl the phone and that it was dead and would not power up. She tried another battery as I also had done and still nothing. So she tells me becase the phone is over 30 days old i have to go to the device support center to get a new one or call in and they will ship me another phone. Well I couldn't wait for them to ship one as i need my phone for work so I had to drive 35 mi. to the device support center to get another phone. Just strikes me as stupid that they cannot just give me a new phone right then and there. When I got mine I was short of my upgrade period but they gave me a conditional upgrade or something and the phone cost $400.00 so I was pretty pissed off that they were just going to give me a refurbed phone considering what i paid for the damn thing. Actually I didn't pay for it myself one of my clients picked up the tab but I still felt like they really stuck it to me not giving me a new phone. I spend thousands of dollars at their store every year with all of my client purchases you would think they would cut me some slack and give me a new phone???
Anyway I got a "new" replacement phone and it seems to be working fine. The GPS worked far better than my original Infuse right out of the box with the Froyo ROM and UCKD5 modem. I also did a speed test with three bars and got 2735 Kbps Down and 319 Kbps up and it said I was on EDGE?
So I just rooted it and i am going to load up the Infused 2.2.0 and manually install the newer modem and the camera fixes. I am going to hold off restoring most of my apps until I use this one for a few days to see how it performs first.
Oh and the girl at the AT&T support center told me she had to replace my battery because it would not power up the new phone. So it looks like I had both a bad phone and the battery also quit the farm at the same time.
I had issues with my first infuse (I'm in FL) and completely blasted it to the point where it would literally not even respond to any button presses soft/hard or otherwise. It was DEAD! COMPLETELY DEAD...I was very sad. Anyway I was within 30 day startup period and they did full replacement no question asked. I told my local att store it froze and I pulled battery and it wouldn't come back on. They acted like morons and gave me a replacement but i feel like they knew what I did. Didn't say anything though.
Needless to say. I take my time now with these custom roms. Rockin Infused 2.2.3 and loving life with my GB and 30fps.
Good luck!

I screwed my phone up last night as well. Used Tegrak and OC'd to 1.3 ghz and it ran fine for a few hours then rebooted. It would lock up at the boot animation. I reflashed 5.0 and all was well again.

Good luck to you. It really is no big deal once you get use to it. And bricked usually means gone for good. Most people just erase everything from the phone and then just fail to load the replacement operating which means the phone is just brand new again.
Here are some videos I have made to help people who need visuals like me...
Let me know if you need some help along the way.

Hmm I dont know but congrats. Did you try re downloading the file? I know it works part of the way but maybe it got screwed somehow. It work for stock so phone cant be to screwed up.

[Q] Htc Shift battery / device issue

I have an HTC Shift that is now a replacement phone Sprint sent because the other Shift bricked on a OTA update. The phone itself looks brand new. (we have had it since Apriil) The problem with the phone is that it will never charge the battery. I actually have 3 spare batteries so in total 4 batteries are charged to 100% but as soon as I put them into the Shift device the battery status will range from 0% to 8% an occassionally will charge to 12% but no higher. If I take the battery out and put it into another HTC it will show 95% or better as charged - to be clear this is the same battery that just seconds before registered 12% or less.
I've tried everything. I've changed Roms (the good thing about this is that I can tell you the ins and outs on about 12 different Roms and kernels now) I've changed up kernels. I installed Bettery Battery, battery calibration tools, spare parts...booted it up empty, let it stay off and "charge" all night, on and charge all night, factory reset, everything but RUU because it just won't do it and HTC update, won't do that either because of the battery being below 30%.
OK, so you say - take it back to Sprint and get a new one - can't do that because I can't unroot it with the RUU as it still shows s-off -
I'm brain dead on this one.
I'm not a newbie at this. I've rooted several phones, HTC, LG, Palm Pre, even turned the Palm Pixie to a wifi goddess in it's day by switching out the radio(you know). I've jailbroke the Iphone and Ipad. Rooted my Thrive and turned a pandigital into a sweet little android.
I don't want to take the phone back like it is. I want to figure out what the heck is the issue. (i know...i know) When I plug the phone in the led comes on as though it is charging but it never charges...any ideas? you know it's probably something simple and I've just fried my brain at this point. Any ideas? Anybody??
Thanks in advance for any input, ideas or helpful tips!

I'm no expert on this, but if i were you i'd just brick the thing and take it to sprint.

Excellent advice... FAIL... COME ON MAN...
Make sure you are wiping the system partition as well... Going from sense to aosp needs a thorough system (not data) wipe... To wipe system, it's located in mounts and storage in recovery if using cwm...

My girlfriend's phone has the EXACT SAME ISSUE. No idea how to fix, I figure there's a contact or sensor hw at fault. It's not ROM specific, flashing a new rom won't make a diff. As soon as the gf or I get a new phone, I'll mess with the device itself.
Best advice - return it!

Been there.....not fun at first, but once CS knew I knew more than they did it was no longer an issue to have my account credited for the service I WASN'T getting. Most ever off was 165 from a 180 dollar bill

Well that's a lot of money. When i was buying the Evo LTE i didn't know i would have to give them my phone and so when she asked for it i was like ummm... I need to go home and do something real quick. She gave me a weird like and ask what i need to do and told her that i can't say. I think she knew i was rooted cause she told me i won't get in trouble but i just was like nope i don't want a flagged account so i'll be back in 30 minutes. She gave up at that point

How I got stuck was I was having like extremely poor service and was waiting on a call back from them, and through reading what people said about them never calling I thought I was safe, about 30 minutes after I flashed cm7 a rep called and wanted me to go into epst and at that time I was so new to being a rooted user I had no idea it wasn't in aosp. So I tried the ## code and when she asked what happened I said nothing she said ok hang on while I flag your account. My first words to the rep was are you fu**ing kidden me! So I stabbed back by tethering to my ps3 while playing Modern Warfare lol

So...unroot before taking. As it says, there's an issue with reading the battery correctly. It's charging the battery, because when it goes into another phone, it shows the correct percentage.
It -has- to be a hardware issue. Unroot, RUU, whatever... there isn't an easy fix for this without messing with the hardware (which will likely result in ruining the device).
If the flex cables were shot, you'd all recommend the same thing. What's the difference with this?
There is a newer and easier way to unroot HERE
