[Q] Anyone else have trouble w/the Speaker Phone Mic? - HTC Inspire 4G

When I am on speaker phone (no headset attached) please say I break up when speaking - every time. However when I have a headset attached or use the phone normally its perfect.
Anyone else have this issue?

Do you have your phone turned upside down or screen facing up when on speakerphone?

Facing up...does that matter?

Yes it does.

It does? Is the mic for speaker phone different than the one for regular use? Maybe that's the issue...

I have to agree, the speakerphone with stock rom seems to have poor functionality. I'm usually holding the phone with the microphone (which I assume is the little hole next to the USB port) directed toward my mouth, but callers usually have difficulty understanding me and the speaker tends to exhibit a lot of static.

So custom ROMS do better with this specifically?

Problem solved

I have been noticing this since I got the phone last week and I couldn't really figure out why it was happening.
During a phone call I finally found out that the recipient couldn't hear my voice properly, even though I hadn't changed my tone at all, when the phone was kept in a landscape manner.
Has anyone else been having the same problem?
I'm guessing this is a software that, if it has been signaled to Google, could be fixed with an update.

I have similar issues. When I'm lying down in bed and the phone is almost upside down with that top mic port touching the pillow under my head, people can't hear me at all. The bottom mic stops working or something. I have to make room between the phone and the pillow to get them to hear me again. Hopefully a software/noise cancellation issue.

I figured out the problem. I was simply covering the secondary mic (top of the phone). I did a few trial and errors and found that was the problem. So no hardware/software issue, it was just a simple case of mishandling the phone
I hope this is the same for you! :victory:

Thank you! I was wondering why this was happening. I had the phone upside down so the top mic was touching the pillow.

Why it should happen? it is not like this in other phones. the top microphone is for talking on speaker mode. why the bottom microphone stops working when you are laying down?
it is weird.
So, this morning, when i tried to make some calls ( or others call me) my mic is dead also (and everywhere else, google now, video/sound rec -just hiss-) only works when the speakerphone is on, then it works fine, when i close the speaker from the call, mic is dead...
The noise cancelation is not covered with anything ( tried to also cover it with my finger to test) and nothing works... only when the speaker on calls is on...
Anyone found anything about this ?

I have exactly the same issue. Did you resolve it with your phone?
Yeah... The noise cancelation mic was dead. I had to replace it... It was about 30 euro
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks for the reply. Very interesting. I have read so much about this issue and this is the first time I have heard that the noise cancellation mic had to be replaced. Where did you pick up the part? Did you do the repair yourself? Any tips or guidance?
i got it from LG, replaced it myself, its nothing much if you got some tools to correctly open the phone.

static earpiece noise

Hi all,
Does anyone get bad static through the earpiece when on a phone call – it's a lot more noticeable than my old nexus 5 and there a fix?
On another note what's the go with image enhancement – does it cause severe battery drain and is there an advantage in turning it on?
I had this issue as well. Found out my device was faulty. Sounds like yours might be to. I had perfect audio when I put it on speaker, but if it wasn't on speaker than there was noticeable static.

Call quality

Not sure if any one has this "issue" when calling without a headset but does sounds of your calls seem better from back of the phone? I have noticed when calling (no speaker, and no headset) the callers sounds seems be louder from the back of phone (as if the speaker was installed backwards).

The sound of earpiece also comes out a bigger hole which is on top of the phone, next to sim card tray. Maybe that is what is happening?

Was thinking the same. Not sure seems odd they would miss something this simple. Unless it is just my phone.

Samsung made the hole in the top for the air to escape as the front earpiece slit is too narrow and wasn't enough

Bad voicecall quality, no issues on when on speaker

Hi,
When making a phone call, the receiver of my call complaints that he almost can't hear what I'm saying. When I then switch to speaker, I can be heard fine. Isn't the phone using the same mic for both normal conversation and speaker phone?
Is there maybe an issue with noise reduction? I remember back with the Nexus phones, that the noise reduction could sometimes make a phone call difficult to hear.
(OnePlus 7 Pro on 9.5.11 and now also with 10)

Are you speaking directly into the mic? Is it noisy around you? Is it noisy around the other person? Are you yelling into the mic 1 cm away from it? Is it fine if you leave it off speaker but move the device further away?

Hi,
I have same issues with my phone. I have tried with both EU and international roms.
If someone have a solution I take it :good:
Similar issues here.
It's actually my biggest complaint with this device. Being on a Canadian carrier and thus not having VoLTE or WiFi probably isn't helping either.

I disabled VOLTE and Wifi and this seems to improve quality a little bit.

Sorry for the long delay......
- Yes, directly into the mic
- Not noisy on both sides, tested this today again with my son in our house. It was quiet
- Not yelling, just normal volume.
- Doesn't change when moving the phone away
To add, it seems that calling with WhatsApp voice is a little better and voice call through DUO is really good. Don't understand this.

Call quality - aggresive audio filtering and volume drops

I'm noticing that my wife and other people I've called mentioned not always being able to hear me, as if I'm walking away from the phone and then audio becomes almost inaudibly weak - or gone even. I've tested this and it seems that there is some aggresive filtering going on, when moving the handset away from you mouth a few inches, audio indeed drops significantly for the other party and quickly disappears completely. Talking directly into the mike and putting it in speaker mode solves the problem, but I really would like to make calls in a normal fashion also.
Doen anyone recognize this?
It seems related to how aggresive the phone filters out ambient noise / and/or uses a cut-of point for audio strength. Anyone know of a way to adjust that?
I have just tried calling a day ago and nobody has mentioned anything to me.
I haven't encountered such an issue either, I've made numerous phone calls recently.
Which ROM are you running?
So far, I've tried weeklys 20.9.3, 20.9.17, 20.9.24 - then switched to stable 12.0.10.0 and now 12.0.13.0.
It might be due to the fact that the gel case that comes with the phone seems to have a narrow opening for the mic, which is directed downward. Combined with the top speaker facing up, which means I need to hold the phone below my ear to hear the phone sound clearly, both distance to the phone mic and the direction of it (facing away from my face) are very sub-optimal. I'll try to modify the gel case a bit to make a small audio channel towards the mic, maybe that helps.
It's not a gel case and the microphone ports on it are perfectly fine.

How (and who) is this going to help?
I am having exact same issue. It happens with no cover on. I'm using xiaomi.eu rom, are you on chinese rom or EU?
