I believe I have found a bug in Android.
I've been going crazy trying to figure out why my girlfriend in Mexico sends me texts and they get corrupted or are blank.
I was able to duplicate the problem today while in Mexico with both phones
Here's what happens.
Phone #1 is a Desire Z TelCel
Phone #2 is a G2 MySimpleMobile
When #1 is using language Espanol (Espana) SMS messages are corrupted on the phone #2 who is receiving. We were unable to send and receive to other phones as well.
I tried this several times. I get either blanks or $#%^#$%^#$^//..,":: just askii symbol garbage.
So I swithced Phone #1 back to English (United Kingdom) and sent a text. And perfect! All texts are sent and received perfect on both ends.
Phone #1 is able to receive messages in ingles/English no problem no matter what language is selected
Phone #2 can not receieves corrupted message only when Phone #1 language is NOT English.
This is independent of Phone #1 being the Desire Z or other Android. We had the same issue with a MyTouch 3G Slide that was unlocked. I kept getting corrupted messages.. and that is why I sold it and bought the Desire Z that has the NAB umts 850 so she can get 3G. (which we do no problem)
So.. either this is a NETWORK Error? OR a bug in Android?
This does not happen with the exact same SIM in other phones, like an old Samsung or Blackberry Curve or Tour. We've used those with no problems.
So this is specific to ANDROID phones and the Language or Idioma when it is NOT ingles/English
I can duplicate/replicate the problem and no doubt, either one of the phones must need a new language installed?
My first reaction would be that it is from using and international build or something.. but it happened with a Local San Diego T-Mobile MyTouch Slide 3G also.
Still not 100% sure if it is not MySimpleMobile or not. Or even TelCel. I need to text back and forth to a Verizon or Sprint phone to be sure. And have her switch between languages. But not doubt this is a bug.
For a quick fix. Is there a way for her to switch languages idomas fast? So if she wants to write me a quick text she doesn't have to goto Menu.. idomas.. blah blah blah.
Wondering if 2.3 Gingerbread will fix this issue???
Any other suggestions fixes?
Gracias!!!
Coool
Thanks for this information even if i dont have it its good to know just in case!
Finally found a thread on Google ... been using the wrong words I guess in my search.
No solution at this point. And Gingerbread doesn't fix.

Not sure why you can not install a few languages. So the phone can recognize Several Keyboards or ASCII char sets.
I should think if I had Spanish and English installed on my device.. and so does her phone.
Shame on Google for not having a fix for this.

I'm having issues with my Touch Pro on a T-Mobile US account. It fails to send texts alot, and I get that "Message was not sent. Try again?" prompt.
Does anyone know why this is happening, or a possible solution?

Knock on wood I have not had the issue with T-Mobile USA so far. Try a soft reset?
I've tried a soft-reset. This problem seems intermitent and I can't seem to sort it out. It was like this out of the box but then seemed to start working so I disregarded it but now it's doing it again.
i dont have the touch pro (yet) but i have the same problem with my touch cruise. It is most likely since we are only on Edge which doesnt have enough bandwidth for SMS, data, and phone. So when data is connected i have times when this problem occurs. I did find a work around though that is easier than soft resetting.
Send the SMS, if you dont get the alert message saying its been sent within like 5~10 secs I will use the phone to call someone (i call my voicemail).
After about 10~30 seconds i get the alert telling me my message was sent.
Annoying yes but better than a soft reset each time
i just got my touch pro and also use t mobile in san francisco. so far no problems with txt or voice calls.

Same problem here but in the Netherlands using T-Mobile. After this problem occurred I tried searching the internet but didn't found a solution. After about 30 minutes I tried it again and it worked
It could be having some sort of connection issues, might try having T-Mo verify the internal settings that its using to send the information. It almost might be your signal changing from H to G to E or something that is kicking out the SMS? Not sure but might be something worth looking into
I haven't been having any issues with my Touch Pro on the US network. However, when I bought my wife her LG Secret, we had the exact same issue. Easy resolution...call customer service. They have a department that specializes in phones not sold for the T-Mobile network. The department pushed two .exe files to my wife's phone, and got both SMS and MMS issues resolved.
The good news is we aren't the only ones buying outside of what T-Mo offers. So many people do that they have their own department to support us with no issues. They were a great resolution to our frustrations.
Good luck.

I think you are right. During browsing I noticed the same problems, my network changes from H to G and back. For a small period the connection will be lost, maybe that was the moment I wanted to send my SMS.
Is it possible to assign H for my preferred data connection?
Hello!
Could someone confirm that the Android system is sending out short messages without user interaction?
I am using my unlocked G1 with a different carrier and get SMS messages from the carrier telling me that some sms can not be sent. But I haven't sent any SMS and all the messages that I send get received by the receiver. So my consumption is that one of the preinstalled applications must sent sms messages. (perhaps in the direction of T-Mobile)
This behaviour started right after the activation of the G1 with the different carrier. Especially after restarting the system I get this messages and after that nearly every hour.
Here are some details about the system:
G1 unlocked
Carrier: Simyo
System: Android RC30 custom build (at the beginning I had RC19)
Network: 3G switched off / Wlan switched on
It would be nice to hear if someone has the same problems. I'm getting up to 100 SMS during the day from my carrier. (I suppose that they are auto generated)
Regards from Germany.
It sounds like the MyFaves service is sending SMS messages,
Id try using the modified RC8, this doesnt have the MyFaves App and is known to solve this problem.
Make sure you back everything up before doing the software change (Just in case)
Yes it does. We've already explored most of the issue in a previous thread.
This behavior comes from an application installed by T-Mobile (MyFaves) that you can not uninstall.
If you are using a custom build RC30 (I assume JF's one) switch to the UK TC5-RC8 from JesusFreke as it removes the crazy app. It works on a US phone and the functionality are the same.
If you have an official OTA-RC30 i'm so sorry but you're SOL and I would suggest to go and try to raise hell with T-Mobile if you can..
I hope you didn't get charged for those SMS...

Yes, heres the thread that I created when I discovered the problem on my G1

Install RC8, that should sort things for you
Great thank you for your help. So I won't have any problem with the moded RC8? Switching from RC30?
You helped me out!
I am on callmobile, a provider in Germany and have no sms sent unintentionally.
Strange but I read about the problem.
Well callmobile is using the T-Mobile network right? So you won't get messages that are showing the failure of delivery.
I have updated to RC8 now and the sms hell is gone. Thanks to all the guys that helped me out here.

You're right, callmobile uses T-mobile net, but it's not t-mo itself. Maybe that is the reason anyway.
Lucky you, you've got root access. And I am so stupid: I read somewhere that there is no reason for having root access on the device at the moment and you should wait with root access if you were not a developer. As I was bored by the permanent notification for an update, I pressed YES and ... there goes my possibility for root access, auto rotation, use another provider without unwanted sms...

You could just try to send a normal SMS to the number 453, my guess it will not work on the network your provider is using. Hence the myfaves problem is not an issue as long as you're not roaming.
yes, you are right. 453 sms produces an error message.
last weekend I was in France and - so far - I have no roaming on my bill.
Hello, can i update my G1 Rc33 too RC 8? How?
I got the nexus s from Rogers Canada so it is the 9020A i believe.
When I send a text message in Korean to my friends who are on Telus network, they get a bunch of ????????? instead of the actual message.
And also when I send them like a picture message then can't see the picture either. When they send me stuff then I receive everything fine.
I have not tried with other networks buts when I send stuff to my friends that are on Rogers network (same as me) then they get everything fine.
I never had this issue with Telus before when I was using the crappy LG GW620R which I also bought from rogers. Is the error happening because the Nexus S is unlocked? Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
Thank you.
I had a similar issue as well but my suspicion was that my receipients were using CDMA dumbphones so they were unable to recognize Korean text messages.
I forget the exact name of the text message type but 7-bit type supports up to 160 latin language characters per message. And the text message type that korean (and maybe other languages) text message uses supports up to 70 characters per message.
Anyways what I'm trying to say is that my friends with iphone, android and blackberry (with east Asia language pack installed) had no problem receiving korean text messages. But my CDMA dumbphone-using friends couldn't receive properly.
As for the mms issue, it was the same thing but it happened to me when my Messaging application had the "black background" option enabled. My CDMA dumbphones using friends said they got the mms,but see nothing but black background. This was when I "patched" (installed this zip in recovery) to bring the black background option. Now, most custom roms have this option without separate patching, and I don't seem to have this issue anymore but I will have to verify once more.
Anyways that was a lot of mumbo jumbo, but hopefully it can help you find your answers.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Thanks for the reply... But my friends from the mentioned provider are using gsm phones just like me. One is on the iphone 4 and the other is on lg new chocolate... as mentioned, on my previous android phone, I never had this issue with them.. This is why I was wondering if it is the Nexus S problem and if there are any solution around it.
UPDATED
I´ve just been using the HTC ONE X for about 4 days and I´ve been receiving hundreds of repeated msgs from my carrier. They say "Vivo RJ 21" (Vivo is the carrier, RJ stands for Rio de Janeiro...the city, and 21 is the area code for Rio de Janeiro). I´ve already tried several factory resets with no luck. I´ve also tried a micro sim card from a different carrier and I kept receiving the same msg (except for the carrier name). I´ve received other regular msgs from my carrier and from other people that were not repeated. It´s just this one.
What are my options here????
Do you still have the same number ported over? If so then maybe it might be a glitch in there system. If not then it might be spam from the poor person before you. Either way either get a block on that or call carrier to stop it.
The worst part is that I cannot even block this number because whenever I try to add the number to the Mr.Number app it tells me to add a valid number. The number is only 2 digits...it´s 50
Looks like it would be best to either call them or go in store and ask them to test the phone. Sounds more like a software hiccup, but who know? Hope you don't have to receive that many texts tomorrow
But do you guys think there is a chance this could be phone related?
I might just try to get a micro-sim to sim card adapter and test it another phone to see if it still happens.
Its a broadcast message
U can stop it in message setting
It will not harm u
Press thanks
Or u can give me ur one x as a gift
How do I stop that in settings? I´ve tried everything and I don´t think it´s that simple.
It must be getting close to 200 messages.
Just go to your carrier already! Or if nothing works, then do a barrel roll~
Don´t you think I would have gone to the carrier if it wasn´t closed during the weekends! I´ve already called them 3 times and they did different things. The last thing they did I was supposed to wait 24h.
What is a barrel roll?
Can you remove the SIM and use the phone without it? If not then try finding some other app that blocks numbers... maybe one that supports blocking operator numbers?
as said before carrier messages can be blocked...I'm assuming a battery pull did nothing?

Ok, just let me know how. So far I´ve tried about 7 differente text/spam blockers apps and none has worked.
The HTC One X´s batt cannot be removed.
Do you have message settings
Just check there might be option of broadcast message
Keep our forum clean
I do have message settings but there are no options there that would help me with this (only stuff like notification types, signature, forward to email, etc).
Today I´m going to the store where I got the micro sim card to have it changed. I REALLY hope it works because it would be a real shame if this was the HTC One X and not the micro sim card.
When I go to "about the phone", then "network" it shows:
operator name - unkown
signal strenght - 0
mobile network type - unkown
service state - radio off
roaming - not roaming
Nonetheless I can make and receive calls, send and receive text msgs, navigate, etc. The only issue is really the operator msgs informing my city area code over and over again.
I went to the carrier and got a new micro sim and did a factory reset WITH the micro sim card inside the phone. The date above got populated. I will wait to see if I will get anymore msgs but I think this might be it.
I´ve tried with a micro sim card from a different carrier and the problem persists. This is phone related for sure. I really don´t know what else to do...maybe try a different rom other then the stock?
I´ve called HTC again and they instructed me to do the following:
-> "settings", "call" and then disable the option "cell broadcast".
So far no msgs. Lets wait and see.
So my phone is the HTC J Butterfly 2 (HTL23) from Japan. I am on EE network in UK. Whenever I text someone, if the number format does not include a prefix i.e. does not have +44 then the message goes through fine. However if the number does have the prefix then I get the error message:
Sorry, the number you are sending to does not contain the correct number of digits.
I've tried using many difference SMS apps, but all come back with the same error message (figures, as everything goes through the EE network regardless of app). I have spoken to EE and they say there's nothing that they can do. I do not get this problem with phone calls.
Can anyone help me to fix this? I think it may have something to do with the fact that this Japanese phone still thinks it's Japanese- need to try and convince it to be English!
Any help appreciated.
