Is there a way to set up the mms apn seperate from the data apn? I would think you could use mms without data. Well at least back in the day on flip phones you could.

Total FAIL!!!!!
I have APN issues when I change the "build.prop" to allow Netflix play. Its the hack that changes the manufacturer to HTC Vision.
Anyhow, everytime I do that Data stops working. MMS stops working too. Had to enable WiFi for MMS to download to the phone.
This is sad news, will always need Data, even for MMS. Just so wrong.

what? you dont need a data plan to get mms working. I dont have a data plan and my mms works great. Now depending on which build you are using you will have to turn off wifi to allow the mms to be downloaded to you phone but just make sure your data box in settings is checked and you shouldnt have any problems.

I use the build.prop for Netflix and everything works including mms and pix on my phone. All it really does that I notice is change the signature to HTC vision if I respond on my phone to xda

What are the changes you do the build.prop?
I changed everything
Model
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
And the fingerprint.
It sucks, when I change the build.prop I lose Data connectivity and can stream on Netflix only with WiFi never on 4G
Which lines did you change?

Only needed to change 2 lines: model and manufacturer. Change model to HTC Vision and manufacturer to HTC. Then reboot.

Are you being billed per MB of data though?

No. No extra charges on my account for mbs. I have unlimited text messages but beyond that I have no charges

Haven't read other responses, so, hoping I'm not repeating sage advice...I have a no data plan too, just make sure you tell t mobile you DON'T want data, the website or better a live person can block it...Then, go to phone and ENABLE DATA! There you hve it, pix and tricks till you cry...

Thanks made the changes data works with just changes to the buid.prop file.
Thanks

yea it doesn't work off wifi at all but im running the rc and after a couple reboots the edge symbol comes on and i can't go on the web but the mms works i guess it just takes a couple reboots to get it working at first

[Q] Using MMS without a data plan

Hi,
I have a Nexus S with Koodo in Canada. I have the possibility to send unlimited MMS, but it doesn't seem to work. I called the tech support and they are telling me that the only way to be able to use that option, it is by enabling Data.
I don't have any data plan. I asked to the tech support if it was possible to block all the data except the MMS, but he said me no. The only way he gave me is when I'm trying to send a MMS, enable Data and turn it off after. The problem is that many applications automatically use the Internet when possible. For every MB, I would need to pay 3$...
Is it possible to activate Data, but blocking everything on my device? I'm sure their must be a way, like blacklisting every servers except the one dealing with MMS.
Any idea? I tried an application called Quick Settings, but it doesn't seem to work when Data is off and MMS is on.
Thanks
Have you tried to set your APN type to "mms" rather than "default"?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Is there a way to know before I activate the data that it won't sync my other applications?
I don't think so, but if you activate data with only an mms apn present, I don't think you will see a 3g icon in your status bar unless you're sending an mms.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
go to settings->wifi/networks->mobile data->apns->select your apn and edit it
Scroll to the very bottom setting, make sure it says ONLY "mms" and NOT "default, mms".
Alternatively, you can root your phone and install droidwall and select exactly which apps can access 3g/wifi.
I think it's a bit silly and disingenuous for your carrier to sell you an MMS plan knowing you don't have a data plan (and that MMS uses data) but then don't show you or direct you on how to then set it up e.t.c..
With Droidwall, can I prevent some apps from using 3G, but able to use WiFi instead?

Usually MMS plans come /w a specific APN that is set to "MMS" only as barqers explained earlier. Ofc this is getting a bit more "delicate" on devices that almost require a data plan to function at all (and try to enable it themselves on a fresh setup).

You can't do MMS over wifi, you'll have to switch to mobile data to do MMS. It should work normally, but I've found that MIUI and MMS don't really go together when you're on wifi.

Ok I see. I turned off WiFi and of course my data doesn't work. I thought MIUI/CM7 fixed the loss of apn (data) issue ? Although I can make calls, I can not use data over the mobile network unless I remove my battery and reboot with WiFi off. This sucks.

Yup! I can successfully connect. But my apns have data and mms as different profiles. So I think its switching to mms then before it sends properly it tries switching back to data? I don't think there's a way to combine the two apns for wind mobile. But it works fine on weapon :s any more clues??
Thanks for your help so far!!

I just checked and once I try and send an mms it locks the phone in this vicious cycle of switching between internet and mms apn settings. Then a reboot fixes it. Anyone else experience this? I'm not sure if or how I can give more detailed info.
i dont have any issue, but sometime when phone goes through dead spot and radio crashes.. where it stay stuck in no service, you flick on plane mode and it doesn't effect it. So you'd have to reboot in order to get your service back. Otherway around that is you go in mobile network and select your network, but apns will disappear. :d SO just reboot.

Would it be too much trouble to ask you how did you fix this? some of us are dealing with this issue and we will appreciate if you can give us the solution since there's no patch or fix out there
thanks
I looked around and found that mms doesn't work over wifi, regardless of rom or root or anything. It seems the tmo servers need to make a data connection in order to start mms send. I've never had a problem receiving mms over wifi, but sending seems not possible.
Edit: As far as receiving, I enabled "auto retrieve"and have had no problems receiving mms on wifi.

Tethering & Mobile Hotspot Temp Fix for ICS

Ok guys, here is a temp fix for you to continue using the mobile hotspot. But I am not sure how long it will be able to work until it gets blocked.
Go to Settings
Mobile network
Access Point Names
New APN
set the name
set the APN to: epc.tmobile.com
save
after you save, select the new APN you created instead of T-Mobile data.
Anyone mind confirming?
yeah please confirm if this helped anyone

Bigger question is what is the new APN? epc has been the updated apn for a long time since the days of wap/internet2/3
ziddey just create the new APN with epc.tmobile.com and save it as is without any additional changes.

Actually, this does work. The only difference I can see between the APN that was on the phone and the new APN created is the following:
Original APN
APN Type: default,supl,admin,hipri
Newly created APN
APN type: Not Set
I have no clue what this means, but that is the only difference I see and the newly created APN does in fact work and allow me to tether over 4G.
Also, I had purchased EasyTether a while back to use on Sprint with my HTC Hero (before I learned to root a phone), and easytether also works using a USB cable.
Thanks to the OP for finding this!!
remove admin from apn type.
Found a possible issue with this fix. When I have the newly created APN enabled, I cannot send an mms. When I select the original APN and try and resend the mms, the mms goes through.
Anyone have suggestions?

thanks for pointing that out jtress, will try to look into it.
edit: jtress i was testing it out and it does work with the current settings. i'm not sure why you are having problems with mms. does anyone else have this issue with the mms not going through?
I have no problem either

Does this still work? I've tried it and it didn't work for me when trying to go to amazon.com. I've also tried deleting the default apn and removing the apn type. I've even tried using wap.voicestream.com as the apn. So far nothing works.
My issue with the APN and not being able to send MMS, may have something to do with me being on Tmobile prepaid plan.
I can live with it this way. I very rarely use the tethering. So, if all I have to do is go in to the settings and switch the APN for the few minutes I use the tethering, I can live with that
tethering workarounds
Regarding the new tethering block, there are a few other workarounds that worked for me.
1) Change your user agent string to something mobile on your browser
2) Browse through an encrypted proxy (work VPN works great for me)
3) Use the internet for things other than HTTP and you'll be fine. (HTTPS works fine)
Confirm that it worked for me. I entered the new APN and restarted the phone and now it works like it did before. Thanks!
hey guys, does the usb tether still works after the update?
Wow I feel both dumb and extremely happy all at the same time but I got it to work! I never restarted the phone before so I guess my phone never properly set up the APN.
The way I got it to work:
1. Selected Default T-Mobile Data APN
2. Delete all of the information from the APN type
3. Reboot Phone
Thanks for reminding me to do the simple things!
Looks like the fun is over...
I had been using Wifi tethering for root users and it seemed to allow me to use it just fine. All of a sudden this morning it stopped working and I got a push notification to my phone about mobile hotspot access being blocked. Came here, found the APN settings in this thread and tried it. Worked for about 30 seconds before the same thing happened again.
Looks like they are being pretty hardcore about it now...
Anybody else experiencing this or know how to get around it still?

Xt720 mms and apn

Hey all. Got a question about having issues with my mms messaging. I've been doing some reading about it and fixed the issue by adding an apn. I don't have a data plan but after entering the apn, I was able to access internet even without wifi. Now I'm worrying about extra charges I may occur. I stopped using the data internet but my data arrows continue to blink even without using any apps..why are these data output and input occurring? And was that the only fix for the mms issues occurring?
Sorry that its 2012 and I'm posting this but this was just an affordable unlocked smartphone for me.

Hi Buddy,
It could be possible that you could incur extra charges for the data usage,if you do not have a data plan. Hopefully, I'm guessing you haven't overused it. Which ROM have you been using these APN settings on ? Just go to settings>wireless settings>mobile settings>turn off data. You could also try any APN apps from the market, if this process does not work for you. MMS settings would require a little data connectivity, correct me if I'm wrong.
I was using tmobile us appname but decided to delete all apns. Yes mms requires a little data but without a data plan, data usages would somewhat be kept on check while keeping mms' to work. But with the apn, there's really nothing restricting me from using data which I've never encountered before while on my g1 and charm. I've decided to play it safe and only turn on apn when I'm sending or receiving mms with a market app to help input the settings for apn quickly. Thanks much for your input

Download MMS over wifi

Is it possible to download MMS when mobile data is off and Wi-Fi is on? Everything I've read says not possible, is it a greedy carrier thing to use mobile data? Manufacturer? Android? I could have sworn I used to do it fine on HTC phones or Motorola's. I don't get any notifications about MMS of Wi-Fi is the only one turned on. Can we change it with a different ROM?
Sent from the Matrix
No it's strictly data. Think of it this way, texts are sent through your data signal and service so in order to receive that picture you download it through your data which uses that signal to retrieve it. Idk if I make sense but this is what I've been told.

The Verizon Message App didn't fix the phone to allow you to download pictures sent via text over wifi... Still have to turn off Wifi and turn on Mobile Data in order to get the pictures. I think this sucks as I just switched to Verizon from Sprint less than a week ago and with Sprint you could get those pictures on wifi or mobile data. Its just a ploy to make you use more data and there has to be a way around it as it is Carrier Specific and NOT Phone Specific...

Doesn't appear to be as you describe it -- I've been struggling to get MMS picture messages through (from my Galaxy Nexus / toro / VzW) when the phone is also connected to WiFi. Digging pretty deep into the issue (a few people still working on it), it appears to actually be a bug (google this for a lot of eye-burning reading ). Anyway - taking a break from the detective work trying to figure out how to make it work, I installed Verizon Messaging on both my Galaxy Nexus and my Nexus 10, which - as you can imagine - has NO cellular connection. I'm also in my home office at the moment, in a finished basement with incredibly poor VzW network connectivity. After failing at being able to send/receive a picture MMS for the last few hours, installing Verizon Messaging seems to have done the trick: I can now easily send / receive picture MMS from the phone while it's connected to WiFi with barely any usable VzW network signal.

As long as both are on it will work. MMS goes through a Verizon data only server. That it what the problem is.
personaly, i don't get it. how hard would it be to have a 3rd party intercept an MMS and send the attactment via email thereby sending it via WIFI?
