Antenna location, where exactly is it? - HTC Sensation

Is it on the cover? On the phone body itself?
Anyone know the exact location of where it's located?

Top and Bottom of the back cover

Thanks...I'm assuming that the main antenna is toward the bottom of the phone since people have been complaining about the death grip issue?
If the main antenna was indeed on the very top then the death grip would be irrelevant since the top never gets covered by your hand. When holding the phone, the hand usually grips the middle-bottom portion of the phone.
Pretty interesting....hhmm..

I take it the very upper left gold contact part and the bottom gold part are where the antennas are located? ?

All of them are antenna contacts. Two for the cellular radio (one at the top and one at the bottom), one for the GPS and one for the BT/WiFi

Not true. It's touching or covering the top area of the phone that causes the wifi problem. It typically occurs in landscape mode where the left hand is holding the top back part of the phone. You can see vids on YouTube showing it. It's also been shown just by touching the very top edge, or specific spots on the top side of the back.

I was referring to specifically to the cell phone signal. As mentioned, I have reason to believe that the bottom antenna may be the main voice/web (3g/4g) signal? Which may be responsible for the death grip?
Anyhow, I just wanted clarification as to what the four gold points are specifically responsible for.
So let's start with the bottom. That may be the voice/web antenna?
Upper right (two gold contacts) wifi and gps?
Upper left (one gold point) for voice?

Death grip people are talking about is wifi, not mobile network. I don't have problems with mobile network signal, but I have BIG problems with wifi.
Top plastic (where the camera is): wifi & BT antenna
Bottom plastic: mobile network antenna
Oh, and there is another contact on T-Mobile version (top left) but I'm not sure what it's for.

The top contact is for the additional antenna that gives the HTC Sensation 4G receive diversity AKA less of a death grip effect when using the phone in portrait mode. It's an additional antenna

OK, help me fill this in, as I cannot find the info anywhere.
A = ???
B = WiFi

A is the GPS antenna.
B is the WiFi/Bluetooth antenna. (I agree, tested pins)
C is the "Diversity" antenna (rx only). (Can't be, I just tested and got GPS signal to be stronger on these pins)
D/E is the GSM/WCDMA antenna.

Actually A is the RX diversity antenna, and I'm pretty sure the WiFi and BT antenna is the one below the camera opening. Not sure though
The main cellular antenna is definitely at the bottom.

A is GPS and Diversity is below the camera per the FCC filing attached here:
My current theory (since the XE lacks antenna "A") is that if the filing photo is correct, the Diversity antenna may act a backup for the GPS antenna. Or the filing could be wrong and GPS/diversity are switched, in which case the XE doesn't have a Diversity antenna.

That's what I was thinking, the international Sensation doesn't have the contact there (A) and the Sensation 4G is the one with RX Diversity. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for them to completely switch the antenna spots around. It could be possible tho

This is the back of a UK Vodafone sensation, i.e. minus the 4G.
Sorry for the ****e quality, I didn't realise it was so bad until I's transferred it to the PC.

Bluetooth is getting on . But not detecting any devices.
Do u have any solution for this????

I have the HTC Sensation 4G (z710a from Bell) and it does not have the A-pin.
Nonetheless all connections (BT, Wi-Fi, GPS, mobile network) are working great!
As seen on the picture, the mentioned A-pin is missing on both covers. The left one is what I have for daily use and the right one came with my phone.
I have a second white cover and the pin is missing, too.

[Idea] Super Antenna

I was wondering seen as how we have an external antenna couldn't you build something that attaches to it and improves phone signal or make a cantenna? Any suggestions on how to do this?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
I don't know how much help this will be but I love the DIY spirit so here are some of my ideas.
Connecting to the existing antenna array could be achieved by attaching wires into the existing contact points in the back plates, then route through the camera lens opening out of the phone. The wires will have to be thin so that is something to consider. i.e. more fragile at longer lengths.
The new antennas could be based existing off the shelf parts or from existing DIY projects for each respective technology, but AFAIK you cannot use a single cantenna type device. Due to the different frequencies used for WiFi/Bluetooth vs. GSM vs HSPA+. I am unsure about how many you will need as a minimum or if there are special power requirements between the different technologies involved here.
Power will have to be another consideration. Not 100% certain, but I believe to get these "super" antennas to be truly super, you will need to increase the power to them. This will of course lessen battery life. So that would be another consideration. This mod might spawn a separate battery mod/swap.
I am not sure if this is cost effective or not, but DIY doesn't always consider cost. Of course if you are planning on using this to power some autonomous super killer robot, that can record in 1080P, and stream back live VGA video using the hardware built into the phone this could work out pretty well.
What if you somehow took gold wiring like on the connectors, attached it to the connectors and ran it along the inside of the back cover?

I think the one above the camera hole is for wifi because I saw a youtube video of a guy that took some tin foil and stuck it in the hole on the phone where that connector would make contact and it gave him a really strong wifi signal. He took out the foil and the signal dropped. So I'm thinking that the connector on the top is wifi. The strange thing is I also have an unbranded euro/asian sensation and it has one less connector than the TMO us one (but uses the same mobile bands/radios) and when I use that cover on my US sensation there is no signal difference. So I really wonder what that extra one is for, since I have noticed no signal difference when using one over the other on the US phone.
Hey guys Ive been giving this some serious thought and here are a couple of my ideas on this....I am looking for some serious Beta testers for my ideas, there is no money compensation for testing just fame and prestige......PM me if your intrested in beta testing for me..hurry I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna want in and space is limited.

Maybe T-Mobile uses AWS bands for HSPA+? I'm not sure if that's even possible, but I don't know much about that stuff.
Anyway, I believe the antennas are:
Above the camera: Wi-fi
Below the camera: BT? (correct me if I'm wrong)
On the bottom cover: Mobile network

No, My Asian sensation has the same bands as my tmo sensation. It has the AWS band and gets the same download speeds as my TMO version. If it wasnt the same bands I wouldnt even get 3g, I would be stuck on edge. Tmo's 3g and 4g(HSPA+) run on the same frequencies. So if you have a phone that doesnt have the AWS band and the phone supports 3g and 4g you will only get 2g speeds. I believe All the the sensations first released had the AWS bands. I think only now are they starting to release versions with different bands. I know a while back a sensation passed through the fcc with att bands. Maybe those are the ones we are seeing popping up on Bell now?

Hmm, not sure how good this idea would be, but it's worth a shot
I'm thinking as the antenna has to be of a specific length to work, this length is determined by the frequenzy of the signal
Here is some examples : http://www.air-stream.org.au/wavelength

ive stuck tin foil in the back of it touching th ebottom two connecters and ive never suffered from death grip since , going on 2 weeks now :0
It should be possible if we could get a flexi pcb that we stick inside over the exisining connections and route outside and fold around that sticks down. I dont think we need more power, just a increased area. Should be easy to do.

[Q] Galaxy Tab 2 7 Wifi antena issue? Death Grip

Similar to iPhone 4, the wifi bar drops when I grab lower left corner in portrait mode. It doesn't seem to drop the connection completly but the bar goes down from 5 to 1..

My tab has *EXCELLENT* wifi reception... when I hold it in portrait - upside down.
Only slightly less better in landscape either right side up or upside down. Seriously. Better even than my Droid X.
They had to put the antenna(s) somewhere. Leave it to an engineer to pick the worse location.

Thanks and it justifies the swap to new one. I am actually glad to hear that it is not an universal issue.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using Tapatalk 2
The signal drops if I hold it along the lower left side in portrait, but I don't loose connectivity. While they could have put it somewhere else, the best place would be where the power and volume buttons are, but the buttons probably prevented that. If they put it anywhere else, there would be an issue with poor location when being held, or loosing signal while being held.
Swapped with new unit and the problem does not occur at the same level. The signal strength does fluctuate but within a smaller range than the previous one.

They could. Right up to the point where it doesn't work at all.
RF layout and design is a fickle thing, where everything becomes a series of trade-offs. Personally, I'm amazed that works as well as it does.
For a living, I do PCB layout and manage/maintain an ECAD library. I recently put a part in the library - WiFI/Blutooth antenna chip. It's a tiny, really tiny thing with the inputs on opposite ends. At the time, I notice the datasheet said both inputs were GROUNDED. (?!?) I brought it up to the tech that submitted it - who called the manufacturer and we determined it was not a mistake. I did the layout, the boards were fabricated and assembled, and it works perfectly. It's just a mystery of modern RF technology.
I've spent some time with Samsung support. This is what they had to say:
Visitor: It sounds to be a hardware issue at least in my opinion... something with the antenna placement, bad isolation or something...
Samsung: Thank you for holding.
Samsung: Thank you for bringing the issue to our notice.
Samsung: I will make sure that the concerned department hear regarding this issue.
Since everyone sees this as a huge problem, where do you want to put the antennae that it wouldn't see a drop in signal during use? Put it at the top left, and it's going to be on the very bottom during landscape use and likely see issues. Put it on the top and you loose signal during landscape use, plus you have to deal with the headphone jack. Put it on the bottom and you need to move the USB connection and speakers, and you would deal with signal loss during landscape use. Put it on the bottom right, and you loose service the same as you do now. Put it on the top right, and you have to deal with the power/volume buttons and the IR blaster. So where does everyone want to put the wifi antennae then? A dongle that plugs into the device?
Be a left handed person
At least, top left side is less touched than other place unless move the power button and put WiFi there...
Anyways the intention of OP was to figure out if it is a design issue or a flawed device case. At last we know what it is and have some piece in our mind by admitting it as it is.
Knowing that Kindle fire has a similar form factor and use scenarios, I wonder if Kindle fire also shows the same death grip case.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express
If it were an issue with the case, you wouldn't see any change in signal, or you would have terrible signal all the time. It could be considered a design flaw but it is likely a design compromise. It could also be that they tried to put the wifi antennae elsewhere, but found that it had the best performance in the current location.

Wifi Antena - Double/Change Camera

Hi, yesterday i open my gtab and i saw the wifi antena its very small
Is there any way to change it? or amplyfi the wifi signal by changing it?
I was thinking changing for one of these:

I think this its the best:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/U-fl-Laird-...ectional_Network_Antennas&hash=item416946edf8
Problem solved (Antenna) i will get one OMNIDIRECTIONAL ANTENNA 9bi and try to get inside the tablet, i will post pictures by request.
anyone?
A solution for you would be this:
buy one of these (dont have to use fleabay of course, but it must be IPX to RP-SMA)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/U-fl-IPX-to...824?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4a9fb5aa28
drill a hole on top/side to fit perfectly and screw it in, the ipx end will attach (snap on) to the motherboard.
then you can buy one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/7dbi-2-4GHz...ectional_Network_Antennas&hash=item45fbc0cf30
or you could even get one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Netgear-Pro...ectional_Network_Antennas&hash=item415fa80efb
this one would not be portable but you would have a great signal!!
your only requirements are the IPX connector and an RP-sma adapter if the antenna you buy does not have an Rp-sma connector
Our antenna is like the second one I linked, just way smaller, probably 2 or 3 dbi.
In terms of signal, every 3dbi is a double in gain, so a 7db would be double or triple stock antenna strength
You have the right idea, but anything less than 5db would be a waste of time, you wont notice much, and the patch antennas are directional. The external rabbit ear type will receive from any direction
to mods: I am not a vendor and I hope linking to fleabay is not against the rules. I will change if needed.

so, what about your antenna? did you see any difference from stock antenna?
i dont want to have any external antenna, because i use it most of times with some of my clients, and having some external antenna takes the "stylish" thing to the g-tablet, i have even consider to buy some carbon fiber for the back
so you say that the last option i consider (the black internal antenna rectangle) will be useless? or worst than the stock antenna?
can you send me a picture of the work you made with your tablet?
NO, the STOCK antenna is 2 or 3 dbi. If you upgrade to a 4dbi like the one you linked to, you will not notice a difference, but if you went up to 5dbi or 6 or 7, you will notice an improvement. They make patch antennas which may fit inside our tab, but if you do not get at least 5, it is a waste of time. I have not changed mine, but I have a lot of PC experience getting people wifi from long range. I have even set up a connection two miles away using a 24dbi dish from an mmds system. I am just saying that wifi reception is based on signal level, measured in DB, and every +3DB is equal to double the reception strength. If you go from our STOCK 3DBi to the one you showed, you will be mad that your signal is the same. go to atleast 5, and you will see a difference. Some people think their wifi is crappy because they do not realize our STOCK antenna is directional, and if facing the wrong way, signal will be weak. I only suggest the external antenna for a more noticeable improvement. You will have to choose style over strength or vice-versa.

so, instead of having an EXTERNAL antenna as you suggested
why no put inside the tablet?

as the space inside gtablet with the both plastic covers isnt that much

I will just dismantle it, and make it happen inside the tablet (the plastic cover around antenna its useless right?its just for protection? since will be inside tablet no need protection, right?)
another options are this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Lin...ectional_Network_Antennas&hash=item1e677a7dd1 (this its directional only, will be that bad?) (but its ufl/ipx :good
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Band-2...ectional_Network_Antennas&hash=item20c639d4fb (cheapest but 1 dbi less, its that much difference?)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/7dBi-Linksy...ectional_Network_Antennas&hash=item1e6e6818b5
As your an expert in this specific area, what do you suggest me from this options?
I know Linksys its a great company for wireless solutions, right?
but ,chinese omnidirectional 7dbi vs Linksys directional 7dbi
What you think will be better for my specific case? I know its hard, since its omni vs directional antenna, and also no-brand vs good company
Hope you can help me with this last questions
thanks
Get the cheapest one you can find. Actually, get 2 of them. All they are is a wire which is cut to the right wavelength, and they have a ball shaped ground plane towards the bottom. If you get one from a router, it will even have an IPX connector on the end of it already. I say get 2 because if you are careful, you can cut the outer rubber/plastic away and have just the wire, which will easily fit inside the gtab case, and still work even if you curl it around. They are really cheap, so if you get 2, you can mess up on 1, and still have the other.

like the image above?
and will work the same?
If it does will work the same, then i can buy a higher DBI antenna, and just curve it as an L in the angle of the Gtablet
i saw 17dbi antenna that are 20-30cm something lenght
so i can curve in the angle, and will fit great inside tablet
i'm right?
yes, you're right. If it is the right wavelength it will work, as long as it will fit. a 17dbi would be longer than that though, sounds like a FAKE. ALFA makes one that is 9dbi, thats the best REAL one I have seen.

This is not a cheapo chinese, be careful taking the plastic off. I own one of these, it works great, look at all that have been sold already.

so, yes, you can change with a better antenna
its just that a better antenna will be 10$+ and actually i dont want to spend that money just for an antenna

GPS Antenna Fix for desire s. + Wifi boost

GPS FIX FOR HTC DESIRE S
FIRST OF ALL! This is not my idea! Original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263078
I just wanted to make a better thread with pictures so people can see it better
And i don't actually use this phone.
Just using my old nokia
Guys i want to make a clear instruction for you if you are having trouble with your gps.
The problems with the phone before i did the fix:
- GPS not locking at all!
- GPS can't find any satellites!
- Endless waiting just to find (with luck) 1 satellite!
And now after i did this fix:
- GPS finds 5/6 satellite under 1 minute. (if you are in a good area sometimes 7/8.
- GPS Locks constantly. even when it finds less satellites.
- Navigation works perfect
And WIFI is now stronger. Now i can connect to the router from a longer distance. outside the house the wifi router still gives me full great signal
did not effect the battery life
Warning!!!!
Before You Begin. Iam not responsible for broken devices. You just gotta be gentle with it! And use your brains

I have read in the forums that the battery cover is also cooperating with the GPS. I couldn't find anything good in google that shows where the gps and wifi antenna's are. But the good thing is that this fix works for me.
thank you soo much! Tried it today and worked!
I also put aluminium in these antenna's.
I can't watch the youtube video, it says "private".
The pictures' quality is very poor, couldn't you make better ones? Thank you
And, last question, do we have to unscrew something to open the phone in that way?

Videos is now Fixed!
Sorry for the poor photo quality. I am not able to make better pictures.
Maybe as soon as possible i will get a new camera. So i can make new ones.
And no you don't have to unscrew anything.

Thanks a lot for sharing. It fixed my WiFi!! It was broken after severel throw downs :victory:
It's not so easy to open the camera cover, because of the glue under the cover.
I put two little pieces of aluminium over the contacts, but the wi-fi cover doesn't seem to be changed.
I'll try later with the gps antenna signal.
Anyway thank you for the tips and the guide.
I noticed a boost on my 3G signal level when I bent a little bit those pins under the batter cover, then I added two small pieces of aluminium foil on the battery cover, over the "golden" contact pins

Warning against this mod!!!!!
I would be seriously cautious about modding your phone in this way, you can cause damage!!!!
Anyone who knows about transmitters will tell you that a transmitter needs a tuned antenna or it will suffer poor performance at best and damage at worst!
The gps unit although not a transmitter is very close to the other antennas and sticking foil inside your phone on just that antenna could still cause reflection of RF energy from the other units.
modding the antennas in any way of the transmitters within the phone is even more likely to cause damage, adding the foil changes the electrical characteristics of the antenna and what is called "SWR" (standing wave ratio).
When an antenna and feedline do not have matching impedances, some of the electrical energy cannot be transferred from the feedline to the antenna. Energy not transferred to the antenna is reflected back towards the transmitter. It is the interaction of these reflected waves with forward waves which causes standing wave patterns. Reflected power has three main implications in radio transmitters: Radio Frequency (RF) energy losses increase, distortion on transmitter due to reflected power from load and damage to the transmitter can occur.
So, mod your antennas at your peril.
Bending or cleaning the spring contacts that connect to the antennas will do no harm and could actually improve the connection but anything else comes with potential risks.
Steve.
Thanks Man! My wifi signal is now much stronger!
But sometimes when iam in a bad area the wifi drops a little bit... and goes up again.
The gps fix worked a bit faster. And my 3g boosted up a little bit.i have no idea how that happend but it's awesome!
It didn't give me a huge boost but it kinda boosted every thing a little bit up!
Thanks, this boosted all my signals, as I didn't know yet where the antenna's were located.
Tried this fix but honestly it didn't improve any signal, it did not make it worse either. Maybe it's a aluminium foil quality thing
send from my desire s

I completely agree with the above statement this is dangerous and may also make your signal directional (so good for one direction - away from the foil side and terrible for all other possible directions) - trust me you dont wanna be the idiot standing in a room trying to "aim" your phone for good signal. Plus there is an agps fix available at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442032 which is much safer and definitely works locks up to 13 satelites and atains lock in about 7 to 15 seconds for me. It further speed things up by eliminating SSL encryption when it gets the network time NTP to use for GPS location fixing. As for WiFi get a better router and maybe update the radio software both easy to do and explained in detail on XDA forums, and more likely to work.
Thanks for Your article. I didn't tap a foil, but i just scrached joints. It bring my gps to life
This is what i did please correct me if is wrong if alu folia can damage something?
After that tested gps, had 0 satelites before this and now
My router in room is about 2 meters far from my bed and chair and signal was like this now that signal is from outside 7 meters trough 3 thick walls
and inside is
Thanks guys

Question T'Eyes CC3 2K - Slow 4G Internet / Antenna Placement

Hi guys,
Quick question: what is the best antenna placement for the T'Eyes CC3 2K for best signal reception ?
My installer placed the 4G & Wifi 5G antennas sticked on the left pillar (driver side, under the factory cover, next to each other - like 2 cm apart) and the GPS on the same side a little lower towards the dash.
4G reception was pretty slow compared to the test I did on my phone in the same location (same carrier, using speedtest app)
Then I had my installer move the GPS antenna on the opposite side (passenger pillar), leaving the 4G and 5G/Wifi in place, next to each other on the left pillar.
Didn't see a big improvement ...
I am using a SIM card installed in the external adapter located in my glove box.
Do you think the 4G mounted next to the 5G / Wifi is causing the slow speeds ?
Or is it just the carrier / GPS & LTE bands available on the T'Eyes CC3 2K for my location ?
In the same locations, my iPhone is fast on 4g
Thanks again !

You're going to get a better signal and better speed on most mobile phones.
The modems are just better designed and usually support more frequency bands.
The same goes for 4g/5g routers. The throughput is often much lower than a mobile phone.
I get faster speeds tethering from my mobile to the head unit than I get by putting the SIM directly in the head unit.

Yes i was thinking maybe the smartphone has much better hardware for 4G/5G.
I will try to use the mobile hotspot for a few days and see how i like it.
Thanks for replying !
I was facing same problem and was wondering what i did wrong. In the beginning was thinking that the GPS antenna interfere (i put Cellular and GPS antenna in between 30 cm) but looks like i should get used with it

What did the seller suggest when contacted for support?
I didn’t contacted the seller. I went back to their recommended installer and ask them to move the GPS antenna on the other side.
Still same behavior afterwards.
I think it’s just the hardware and the limited GPS/LTE bands supported by it
If we think about it, our smartphones have all antennas crammed into a small case without any issues. It’s just better hardware.

This must be hardware issue, funny enough crappy YT57B very slow, fake parameters head unit had much better reception than my new Teyes CC3 6G, what a shame.
