Developers and Users of This Forum:
I have stuck my nose in into what I think is a poor situation -- and if I am wrong you'll just have to fuss at me.
There continues to be a stream of posts not related to development coming into this forum -- and frequently posts that some of us see as related to development and ROMs get pulled by zealous moderators trying to keep this forum clean. Some are plain put in the wrong place and some are misunderstood in their intentions and some should be here.
The big problem -- as I see it -- is that we have two different things at play:
1. The devs need a place to coordinate, criticize, help each other, etc. in pursuit of program and development. Can't be upset over that.
2. But we also have all the ROM and Patch Posts here -- which draws piles of questions, comments, etc. as we all try to have some fun. It is the ROM-related stuff that usually creates the stuff that gets pulled, correctly or not.
I was IMing with a moderator -- svetius -- about a message I put in here and which got transferred to the Vega forum when I wrote it for G-Tab users about the VEGAn ROM. It still wound up in G-Tab General rather than here.
So I proposed to him -- Why not have a "ROMs and Patches" forum where the big stickies at the top of this forum could be placed. Then questions could be asked and answered and info shared related to them without it infringing on the devs. This is the biggest traffic in Developers as we know it now and it involves both devs and folks who are just trying to get stuff for their tabs.
And if "ROMS and Patches" were added, then the devs could do their technical thing here.
I'm not sure XDA will let even a moderator make a change like that. If you look at all the other sites under XDA, most of them use the "General/Accessories/Development/Apps, etc. format. XDA may pressure the moderators to standardize. I hope not when other structure might be better.
I would hope if we asked them they would be somewhat flexible.
If you like my idea -- or can improve on it -- please post here so the moderators can know what we think. This is a democracy and I will go with the majority. But you devs need to let us know what you think so we can try to either help you or forget it.
Don't give me any credit -- let's just get it fixed.
Rev
My apologies. If some of the above post doesn't make complete sense it's because I wrote it to the people who use Developers to express an idea I think has merit and to get their opinions.
Even though it was written for the developers, et al, it was pulled out of there without so much as an apology or a comment. Personally I think it was rude and flies in the face of the constructive work a lot of people are doing in support of the G-Tablet. I can't write ROMs, but I can express an idea to help those who can.
And if they are mad because I said their forums are not perfect and suggested a solution -- then I'm sorry for them. I don't think expecting help with improvements we need is too much to ask for.
But I'm not sorry I tried to solve a problem and be constructively helpful. Need more of that around here.
Rev
First let me qualify (or disqualify) myself.
I do not own a Viewsonic G Tablet.
I own other Android devices.
I have a strong background in development and programming. I am the Director of Engineering for a small company in Tennessee where we develop adult amusement devices (no, not porn) such as slots, video poker, etc.
I am proficient in many languages, as well as 'nix operating systems.
I have cooked my own roms in the past.
Second...
I have been lurking around the XDA developer forum since back in the Windows Mobile 6 days. I currently have an Android phone and an Android tablet (not a Viewsonic).
Like everyone else here, the prospect of the new build is tasty. Wanting to delve into it myself to see what I can do, It is helpful to me to look (like many others) in the development forums to see what I can see.
However...
Let this serve as a warning to anyone who is not a "Dev" on this forum.
This forum, like many other here at XDA belongs to a handful of "Devs" and you are not one of these "Devs".
Your best bet is to lurk like the rest of us. I don't care if you have a Honeycomb port that will work on this device or a pill that cures cancer. They don't want to see it and you don't want the hassle of being flamed for trying to contribute. They will get to it and you will not beat them to it.
Devs work hard. They do the work for free and they should be revered and respected. But make no mistake, they know it and are not afraid to tell you to STFU and GTFO for merely making a suggestion or comment.
So do all of us a favor, stick to the General forums and don't poke the bear.
I do not plan to respond to this thread and it should probably be closed immediately.

.........lmfao i was about to say the same thing, this thread totally defeat its purpose, the fact is no matter how much you tell people to "search" "post in the proper section" "dont ask for ETAs" and so on theres going to be someone that dont follows the rules, and WTF???? "This forum, like many other here at XDA belongs to a handful of Devs"??? this forum belogs to the community just as much as it does the devs......obviously someone did not read the "state of the site anoucement......tsk......tskk
I am poking the Bear, and here it goes.
If you want us peasants to stop posting in the Development forum of ANY device, simply create a tag for Developers, make it so only "x" amount of posts and a review by the mods, will grant someone this tag. Then you limit access to the Dev forum to tag holders only. Then, when one of the Devs (whos' work is tremendous and I highly resect) has something ready to go, they can post a link or a file in the General section.
That way us 'morons' who are not welcome here can't possibly get in their way with our useless posts and questions. I am tired of the elitist attitude that some have here. Yes a lot of you know more than I do about this stuff, yes I am learning to do this stuff in my SPARE TIME. I am not in college, I do not have a job that allows me to sit in front of a computer all day(don't want it either). When I do have the time to get invloved, or if I find something useful, like many of us, I want to post it. I don't want to be a leach. I can only speak for myself with this. I may not be able to give as much as the devs do, but how can I possibly learn if I dno't ask questions?
The Search feature that people here are so in love with and can't wait to tell us "search is your friend"?
Its almost useless. Its rare that I can find what I'm looking for in the limited amount of time I have to be on here. Its generally easier for me, and many others I suspect, to ask the question and wait for an answer.
Then ask the question. The big complaint is that most don't even try to look or they post "LOOK>>>>>HONEYCOMB ON THE NOOK.....WHY DONT WE HAVE IT YET" in the dev section. Granted the search function isnt great but filling up the forum with the same questions over and over is what makes the search function useless to some. Although I seem to be able to find what I'm looking for most of the time with a little work. The moderators have asked that people not post general questions as new threads in the dev section yet it keeps being done.
its not an elitist attitude about the dev section. Its a request to keep the posts to development only or at least inside the correct thread and not keep asking the same question over and over with a new thread.
I agree with limited access...

Unfortunately, you're changing the rules of the present discussion with that. The OP stated "Devs work hard. They do the work for free and they should be revered and respected. But make no mistake, they know it and are not afraid to tell you to STFU and GTFO for merely making a suggestion or comment." The implication of that is you SHOULDN'T ask the question, you should just STFU.
IMO, the OP is WAY out of line. If the devs don't want comments/suggestions/questions, then they should keep their dev work private and not open it up for public consumption. Yes, the rest of the community wouldn't benefit as much in that case, but there's no excuse for an arrogant attitude like saying STFU for GTFO if someone merely makes a suggestion or comment on something that's been posted for public consumption.
If the devs are simply doing their work and sharing it just to have people fawn all over them for it and expect not to have to deal with the questions/comments/suggestions of the "unwashed masses", well, sorry, the world (and this site/forum, from my understanding) doesn't work that way.
Its the answering "How do I install clockwork?" question that is posted all the time even tho its clearly posted as a sticky. "I've followed the directions exactly and I cant get TnTlite to install".....wrong....you havent or it would have installed. "When are we gonna get an update to X rom?"......"How come we don't have Honeycomb yet?"....."Your rom bricked my device"....."Why won't someone answer my question? that was posted 15 minutes ago.....The devs do this on their own time and for the most part are happy to answer questions but when its clear that someone has no intention of learning for themselves and just want the info handed to them on a silver platter.......well....it gets old
The OP is out of line with his "psa" unless he speaks on behalf of the collective body of said developers.
This is a rhetorical post, I will not be responding again.
Edit: see what I did there with that last line?

Collaaaaa!!!!
If we want to grow the G Tab community ( aka continue to receive the excellent support from the Devs) we need to grow the number of G Tab users. If I were considering a new tablet purchase and stopped by here to check out the G Tab, I would not put it high on my list. If new members post in the wrong section or dup a post, it's Ok to send them a "Friendly" reminder, but to blast them like this is an insult to everyone here. Hell they might even be driven to buy a windows mobile 6 product.
I have received an 'infraction' from an XDA Moderator know as "Fallen Spartan".
As the thread is now edited by him, you can't see my post that he described "spam". The thread although is here.
The story is, Fallen Spartan had just asked everyone on the forum to stay on topic. Somebody then put a GIF (he quotes it was a PNG, he is wrong) of Michal Jackson eating popcorn at the movies right after his "stay on topic" post. I then replied "Yes, that's really staying on topic, thanks" and I received this notice.
Our regular Atrix forum mod is Mr. Clown. He has been a good mod so far and does what is necessary. Now we have this new guy, Fallen Spartan...
I want to know how to report him, as I believe he is abusing his XDA responsibility.
If you think I'm crazy, and he did the right thing, please say that also.
Thank you.

I have noticed as a new user that some moderators appear to take their jobs a little bit too seriously on here. Little bit of power drives them mad!! Its crazy so it is.
I have looked at that thread, and it does appear to have members consistently taking the thread off topic.
That is a DEVELOPMENT thread, and I see a fair bit of persistent off topic. The thread was derailed persistently, and it's a very important thread for users of the Atrix. there were numerous requests by members to keep it clean of junk, and this didn't happen.
The correct course of action here is to not reply or continue the off-topic, and hit the report button at the top right of the posts.
Also, you will find Fallen Spartan is in fact a member of the MC, and thus more than capable of dealing with cases such as this.
An infraction is a warning or "reminder" not to do something again, and does not cause any restrictions or other consequences.

here we are for to learn or enjoy with our devices, some times its funny, somtimes it´s serious, but i think here we aren´t for to discuss badly or to give the orders gifs to joke of some comments...
These situations must be cut and the MODERATOR is the manager of it, he chooses how to finish it

That sounds a bit too negative. I would like to add that this forum and site is fantastic. I have learned more about Android in a few weeks on this site than I would have trawling through manuals and websites. The work people put in to this site is commendable and that includes the moderators. Where else would you get such passion, innovation and good advice? So keep up the good work all and apologies if my comment sounded too negative.
The Mod asked people to stay ontopic. So you responded to an offtopic post with another offtopic post. You get told not to do this through an infraction and you whine about it? You sound like a 5 year old crying because someone else got some chocolate and your parents wont buy you some too. If you have a complaint go through the correct channels and try not to sound so self entitled. Live, Learn and move on.

under my opinion, your comment don´t sounds negative, and it´s the true... i think there isn´t any development forum better than XDA for develop or learn...
i´m spanish user, i talk a little bit english languaje and soo poor lol... and there are a lot of forums in spanish web but not so complete as this one, i believe that it does not cost anything to take care of this web and to follow the procedure of use..
Yes, you are correct, it was a gif file, not a jng. My mistake, but that had no relevance on me giving you an infraction
I understand your feelings about receiving an infraction and I know Mr Clown may let things slide, but you have to understand we received numerous complaints about that particular thread going off topic so I felt we (the mod team) needed to intervene. I cleaned the thread and left a gentle reminder for all to please abide by forum rules and keep thread on topic. Now the following 3-4 posts where the exact opposite of what I was hoping for. Yes, the first was in good nature, but it just encouraged everyone to do the exact opposite of what I said. No actions go without consequences and if I let those posts slide with no punishment other members would see this and also act inappropriately. Instead of you carrying on off topic and posting your post, all you had to do was report the post above you. But in turn your post also encouraged others to post off topic. I hope you understand my reasons. I do not go out actively dishing out infractions, but I will when I see it necessary. You only received a 3 point infraction which is not a permanent record against you, if is just a gentle reminder to abide by our forum rules and it will not be held against you if any further instances arose.
As for you reporting me, please do if you feel you have been harshly punished. Contact site admin mikechannon and he will look into my behaviour.
All mods have to abide by the same rules as you and everyone else.
Best regards
Rick
EDIT
The thread which I cleaned had over 15 pages of posts. After I cleaned it this number was reduced by half.....hence why we received so many complaints about thread in question and why I took action. Normally I would leave it to the FSM for that forum (Mr Clown), but unfortunately he wasn't online at the time

As one of the site's administrators, I am supposed to have some sort of decorum in the way I approach people, but this "new guy" as you call him has been part of the moderating team in this site for a very long time. As some others said earlier in this thread, infractions are just a reminder that you are doing something that is against the rules. Not cooperating with moderators is against the rules. In this particular case, Rick did nothing more than to clean a development thread from clutter posts and specifically asked that posts on that thread be relevant to the conversation taking place. You decided to reply to an OT post with another OT post (I honestly don't care if it was a png, a gif, a jpeg, or whatever format of image you used, so please don't hang on to trivial things in the matter). You went ahead and added a post that was not related to the thread's main subject, effectively going against a direct request from a moderator. It is the equivalent of being pulled over by a cop for speeding and left off with a warning, and the first thing you do the moment you turn on your car is to go from 0-100 mph in 10 sec right in front of the cop. What did you think was gonna happen?
At this point in time, I will consider this matter closed. If you come across a real injustice by a moderator, please feel free to contact either mikechannon or me.
Thanks.
These forums would be unbearable and unusable without the mods and the good work they do. All i see are kids with entitlement issues who need to learn how to moderate themselves better.

As I say "new guy" I mean "new guy" to the Atrix sub forums specifically. I see some people here saying what he did was his choice and it is fine that he did it, and a couple that think it was too much or thinks that a lot of the forum moderators are being more strict...
I know that this infraction is no big deal at all, I've known that all along. Regardless, I fell as I am being yelled at. And no matter a "big deal" or just a "warning"...I don't think it was at all necessary.
It doesn't seem to myself that I am making a big deal, but maybe I am and I just don't realize it. I won't report anyone. I don't want to try to over power anyone because I can't. And even if I could, now that I've calmed, I wouldn't. I don't want to make anyone mad, and I don't want to waste my time.
Maybe I just need to realize some moderators are more strict than others, so I should follow the rules closely at all times.
Thank you for your post, and please do close this thread.

hi guys - as my inspire comrades, i'd love to offer you guys spotify invites. it's through this cool service i found called klout that measures your influence via social networks. they give you cool perks (ie spotify invites). anyways, here's the link: http://klout.com/perk/Spotify/Spoti...eeb5e4309f4a1e38f2a120afc3953fb10d7a27e7bf964
[rant]
Let me start this off by saying that I respect and love our mods for all their great work.
However, I have seen more and more in the past month or month.5 that many of the threads in this subforum have been closed. Some because they're no longer relevant for whatever purpose (which is a good thing), but other select threads are closed because they are off topic. The question I pose is why do some off-topic threads have to be closed?
Granted, this is a forum for developers and for phone support, applications, questions, etc, it is also a community. and because it's a community within a community (inspire users), I'd like to be able to have few off-topic conversations without them being closed by the mods. This is also the general subforum and therefore, I think it's appropriate if I want to start a slightly off-topic conversation with my fellow inspire users.
I understand the fact that sometimes off-topic threads can cause clutter, but I think thats most relevant in the case of multiple threads of the same topic.
disclaimer: conan, this post was not really inspired by you asking the other user to use the off-topic forum in the other spotify invite thread, but is a result of various threads i've seen closed recently. also, as i mentioned earlier, i would like to share the spotify invites with my fellow inspire users, not other random people that happen to also be browsing the off-topic forum.
lastly, i'd like to thank all of you amazing people for making my experience with the inspire so freaking awesome. this goes from the devs to the other people like me that respect and love the devs' work to the noobs without who we would be so peaceful and happy without having to tell them to search
[/rant]
I appreciate what your saying about the fact that you'd rather offer these to another inspire user, not just the first random OT user to jump on your thread.
That said, there is an undeniable problem at the moment with clutter on the forums.
While your post is entirely genereous and well intentioned it is not strictly "on topic". I know this may seem petty but if we (the moderation team) are to bring the forums back into line the way they used to be, we need to be consistent in our actions.
You may not have asked for my opinion but I'll offer it anyway..
I would have just picked out a couple of members you'd like to donate these invites to and PM'd them, your two fav devs or someones who's helped you with a problem for example. Perhaps even your friendly forum moderator (just kidding).
I'm not gonna close your thread right now because like I said, I appreciate the intention behind it but let me know when they are claimed so I can close it and prevent it turning into a "Where can I get an invite??" thread...
Cheers.
I know this seems contrary to XDA's recent apparent policy of consolidating the number of forums rather than expanding, but maybe a community/off-topic board for various high-traffic devices would be in order.
I also have Spotify, but no invites, and would highly recommend you take this generous guy up on his offer.

whenever i rant, i like to hear opinions from everyone that i'm ranting about. so thanks for your opinion what do you think about having an inspire off-topic subforum? i feel that since the Q&A section popped up, the general section has been MUCH cleaner, so props for that! maybe this well help too, maybe not. oh well.
and also thanks for the advice about PM'ing people - i'll try that next time.
FYI - there's 1 invite left via the link in the OP

Sent From My Fingers To Your Face.....
before i start this thread please understand i have been "stalking" this site and the forums gaining much knowledge of the devices i use and have owned... in NO way am i trying to bad talk any general mod or admin in anyway and dont mean for this to be insulting to anyone...
my question(s) is:
Why do most if not ALL moderators feel the need to threaten people in EVERY forum... now i can understand if there is a person swearing at someone... but honestly most of you flaunt your BAN powers a little to much... as if we cant see your "moderator" title and know when to shut up and grow up till you leave jk lol
now with that said i understand some of you have a life outside xda... and may get a little "pissy" then log on to XDA and see 50 PM's about a person or forum being out of control... you then go in there with a chip on your shoulder and not only get MORE pissed off... but make someone pissed off or upset by your NerdRage banhammer powers of steel
i think you need to understand that we are people too... just as you are... we are no perfect and do not mean to make mistakes... but with that SO DO YOU... so please if any moderators read this next time you "clean" a thread and decide to leave a cocky comment regarding your powers of vacation giving... try politely telling the general public to do what you ask...
(PLEASE INSERT USER FOR PEOPLE... IF YOUR A IGNORANT PERSON THAT THINKS EVERYONE IS FACELESS OVER THE INTERNET)
i really enjoyed xda a year or so ago... when it wasnt so violent and people where nice... but i think XDA moderators should set an example of those who are rude... and be the bigger person rather than blatantly abuse there privilege's
let this thread die... or comment i dont care... hell even ban me or send me on a vacation... some one needed to say this in my opinion... and obviously many people on here CANT have that very thing without someone *****ing at them.. or stepping on someones toes
hope XDA can start this new year off better than the last one ended
thanks
The short version: It's their JOB
The longer version. They are responsible for helping to keep XDA a innovative thriving board that has a wide range of users from a wide variety of different backgrounds and experiance. They not only have to deal with keeping the regular userbase happy but they have to ensure xda remains a productive and successful family friendly (for the most part) website, and in doing this they deal with alot of stupidity, trolls, spambots, incorrectly placed posts, whingers, drunkards, spammers, scammers, noobs, rickrolls, memes, tired old jokes, and self entitled douches (to name a few).
Some people may behave when they know a mod is watching whist others may continue being dumbasses or annoying or breaching the rules and may require a more firm approach. (Although in my oppinion a warning is not a firm approach, a flat out ban or suspension without a warning is). XDA is a informitive treasure-trove of awesomeness that covers a wide veriety of tablets, phones, programs and platforms, and whats more? ITS FREE! Sure feel free to whinge about being warned for a percived infraction but really you should be taking it up with the mod who did it or other mods cause this type of thread will get you no where. Believe it or not the tolerence level here is pretty high, as long as you post in the correct areas and make a minimal attempt to remain on topic, they are not too hard and if you are feeling like being stupid, they even provide a forum for people to be stupid in (check out the off topic section, I do regularly. Its funny..... sometimes.)
SO in the end you can either be in here whinging or out there making productive use of yours and your phones time, otherwise there is that little X in the top corner of your screen.
And remember:
I tell you. Most moderators take this site to seriously. It's like it's their baby, also some of them are very sad And have nothing better to do than ban people.
Really you just have to put up with people that don't have a life outside this forum.

That ban threat that you are talking about is a generic copy and paste message. Why should they type out a personalized message to the hundreds of people breaking the rules everyday? And it really isn't a threat. If you continue to break the rules, you WILL be banned.

i have YET to get WARNED or ANYTHING from a moderator... this is a general question from all the **** i seen on man forums where the moderator feels the need to taunt and belittle people... this is a FREE site... but in no way should people feel like **** because a moderator is being a asshole...
and people like you (ignorant ****s) are the reason why people get defensive and trash talk each other and argue....
maybe after this post i will be yelled at for swearing but again this isnt about ME getting yelled at and complaining.... this is ME standing up for the people who dont get a warning for anything but get banned... and it has happened and for you to say" you shouldnt get a warning it should be a ban or vacation" just shows how arrogant you are... bet if i track through ALL of your recent posts/threads you havent helped one person without being a **** about it first...

Lol its a crusader on the internets fighting for the rights of the downtrodden and abused on all forums everywhere, One day we will break free of this dictatorship and take the forums for the common man.

WAAAAAAA WAAAAAAAA WAAAAAAAA No one tells me what to do ill tell my mummy and she will get you in trouble. My mummy says I can do what I want and you can't do any thing .
Actually your post and general whining reminds me of this:
close to the end of 2015 and alot of mods are still huge jerks who think they have power over any and everyone.

I can tell you first hand the Moderates on this site are some of the best people I've ever encountered anywhere. And they have a site with near 7 million members to watch over. Then along come people who got "in trouble" for breaking the rules that they agreed to when they registered, calling moderators power tripping jerks. :silly:
Well, I will need to disagree. The tolerance most show amazes me at times. If you only knew the messages we often receive. Again, an incredible group of people here selflessly donating their time, for free, to help keep this site great.
All that said, me, myself, I lean to the jerk side.
Thread closed. 3 years late, but well deserved. :good:
