Which ROM do you suggest? - Droid 2 Android Development

Okay, so here's my situation. My Droid 2 had a physical keyboard failure, so I had to get a replacement (yes, I stock recovery'd mine before sending it back). So, now I have new stock Droid 2, but it's been awhile since I've rooted/ROMed it. I'm still capable of doing it, but not sure what is good these days. I was running Fission 2.5.7 Black Edition. I was looking through the forum and it looks like Gingerbread was leaked, but there are no custom ROMs for it. I assume this means Motoblur would still be there and it would still be full of bloatware? I'd like to run Gingerbread but if i can only have it with Motoblur, then I'll wait for a custom ROM. If this is the case and I have to wait, do you guys suggest just going back to Fission 2.5.7? Or how does Liberty compare? Any others I'm unaware of?
Leave your suggestion and a reason why. Greatly appreciated!

I've been running Fission since the beginning of times. It's been solid for me and it is a good choice. Sure GB leaked but never felt the urge to try it. CM7 is being perfected as we speak and I will for sure try it out. It's been acclaimed as the best ROM for a reason.

Go for Cyanogen, it now has official nightlies, and I have been running it for about a week. The only issues left with it are incredibly microscopic, i.e. to connect to a computer, you must plug-remove-plug.
It is also the only ROM with all the Moto stuff completely removed (the other ROMs deeply hide it, IIRC), which is a major plus. Don't be alarmed that you must flash it from Froyo, that is related to the bootloader, but the ROM itself is Gingerbread.

So you can flash a GB ROM on top of Froyo build? Or at least in this case?

For CM yes, and you have to be on Froyo. The kernel was updated with the Gingerbread leak, and the 2nd-init method used to take over the bootloader doesn't work with the updated one, only the Froyo one. Here is an article on how it works by one of the main guys responsible for bringing CM to the DX.

If you're a fan of stock (aka vanilla, aka blurless, aka nonbloat, aka....awesome) like Fission gave us in 2.2, I'd suggest flashing Apex 2.0. They made it release candidate up from beta last month, and I'm in love. There doesn't seem to be alot of fanfare about it. I would have thought that since there was such a fan following of stock fission, and he's decided to drop the D2, that people would be all about it's "sister", Apex. Stock GB, you can't get any cleaner. Sure CM7 and Liberty have some extra tweaks, but if you're a barebones guy, Apex is the way to go. Here's the link on droidforums.net
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ap...v2-0-0-release-candidate-rc2-6-12-2011-a.html

I was running Fission but was frustrated at the lack of updates and GB. I've been running Liberty GB 0.8 and have been pretty happy with it. I am curious about Apex and may give that a go at some point.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
I decided on Fission for now (2.6.1 I think) Black Edition. Just a version up from what I had before, but i gotta say I love Fission! I think I'll just keep this until CM7 is official. Considered giving Apex a try, but it seems like CM7 will be right along here so I can hold out until then.

Atrix to Inspire today. What ROM SO MANY?

I have a atrix and got ATT to send me a free inspire. Long story.
Anyways on Atrix really only 2 ROM Gingerblur and Greyblur. They are both great and about 99% use one of those.
Then there is gingerbreak to root it. Very easy one at that. Then you are pretty much done since you cant over clock it.
Looking at the inspire dev section is crazy next to atrix. The whole first page is all diff rooms.
I can assume the thread with the most post is the best one but could be wrong. Also since i can overclock the inspire might be some diff options.
Here is what I like to do.
1. Root
2. Over clock
3. custom nice stable rom
4. I am somewhat noob as I had blackberry prior to feb atrix so dont want any of the above steps to be so high level i cant figure it out and brick my new phone.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Root (pick one):
Hack Kit by attn1
One Click by bubby323
ROM:
Inspired Ace
Kernel for OCing:
MDJ V Series (gingerbread)
Note, this is all preference-based. You should try out several ROMs and decide for yourself.
Thats about the worst way to decide on a rom, half the people flash roms cause of the name, just try a few. once your rooted, flashing different roms is the easy part. And the kernel is what's gonna make your phone faster and improve battery, not really the rom.
..
I'm having trouble finding a ROM better than RCMix HD. I've tried many others but keep going back to capy and friends.
Plus rumor has it capy is uploading the first working Sense 3.0 rom as I type. Soo excited!
I always end up back on cm7
Sent with the power of a unicorn horn.
I really like cm7 also. At least until I have to take a picture.
Root it, then start playing with different ROMs. Personally I stay away from ROMs that use or have parts of HTC Sense in them. No need to OC the phone it's fast enough.
I've been using CM7 for the last few weeks. I've had good luck with Cognition HD and LeeDrOiD 4G 2.2.
i keep going back to cm7. just root and flash away and see what you do and don't like about the roms out there. just make sure if you flash kernnels to make sure they'll work with whatever you are currently running

I just tried out TPGB-CM20110506 and I'm not digging the theme... restoring CM7 right now.
When I had my EVO I went Senseless (as CM6 didn't work right for it). Basically as pure android as you could get, but you had the Sense dialer and contacts, which I loved. Ever since then, I've been using CM7 on my Mytouch 4g and then my Inspire, but I think I might try a sense based ROM tonight for fun.
Honestly, try CM7, try MIUI (you either love it or hate it, I think it's gorgeous but impractical), then try a sense based rom like inspired or RCMix. You've got all these options and they're all free, so why not try them all? This isn't Apple, or even Moto and their locked bootloader; see what fits YOU best, not what someone SAYS fits you best.
My best advice is to try out a bunch of different roms and find which one you like best. Personally, I prefer CoreDroid roms with Sense. They run smooth, have great optimizations and eye candy, and the development team does an amazing job bringing new things to their roms and fixing bugs fast.
IMO best rom is coredroid v6.0 with the leedroid 3.0.1 kernel
I was using rcmix hd till the new coredroid came out ... I would start with one of those two.
I like the RCMix with evolutionary Sense, great ROM.
i'm all about cm7, but this miui **** is so slick. just started playing with it today.
Take your time with rooting. It was the longest process I've ever experienced with a phone, but worth it. Once you're rooted flashing new rom's is a snap so try them all. I like anything that doesn't have Sense in it. Also, I OC'd for a bit but found it to be pointless because the phone is plenty fast for what I need it to do. Basically, just root and try some stuff. Have fun. Read the instructions of everything. And BACKUP!

New Rom on SamFirmwares.com: I9000XXJVR (2.3.4)

I9000XXJVR is up! Looks like another iteration to follow up JVP and JVQ.
From the post:
"Its a great weekend! SamFirmware released yesterday special bada files...
And today we release some nice firmwares for the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S II together with DarkyROM.
What are the new roms?
I9000XXJVR and I9100XXKG6.
Both roms running Android 2.3.4"
Running an Apex version.of it right now testing.it.out. Seems pretty stable so far. I am using.it with the i897 gingerbread bootloaders.
Sent from My 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 Captivate Test Phone depending on what Gingergurl I am testing.
As far as I know, Apex (V8.3) is still running JVQ. JVR is new as of this weekend, and I haven't seen any Captivate ROMs incorporate it yet.
Im running it right now and as far as i can tell i have no reboots and this morning i took it off the charger with 98 battery. No charge bug i dont think....at least not yet. Im using darkcore with ext4 by the way.
The csc is not jvr,(was not included in the leak) so this one is from jvq so it's kind of incomplete as a whole and is a hybrid of the 2. And deodexing breaks the browser, it doesn't show up as installed even though all the files are in place.
Don't flash ROMs not designed for your phone. That's the number one cause of bricks here on this forum. It takes special handling to go back to the way things were.

I totally understand where your coming from. But in my defense i am currently running it with the i897 ginger bootloaders and.not having.any issues so far. Plus this is my test/backup phone.
I cannot add the android 2.3 keyboard i usually use since.it not a deodexed.rom yet. I have read about the browser breaking if it is deodexed. I even ran for a bit with the tegrak overclocking app and.it seemed.to work. Again it is my test phone so i like messing around and seeing what.i can do with it. The test i got already has put out a small update to add the battery mod. Looking forwad to more.testing.

What is the most stable/functional new 2.3 ROM?

I've put off rooting for a long time because I don't really need anything else from my phone, but waiting for the gingerbread update is getting a little old. I'd like to Root my Inspire and try out gingerbread and sense 3.0 instead of sense 2.1
Since the leak has already happened for the Inspire's 2.3 update, are there any good reputable ROMs out there that I won't have any trouble with? I don't want to have to deal with GPS not working, or no MMS, or having to do this or that to keep everything working. If I'm going to Root my phone, I don't want to have to worry about constant force closes or features of the phone not working. Are there any new GB 2.3 roms with sense 3 that can do this? I want it to be an Inspire GB rom, not an old Desire HD GB rom.
Thank you!
Since this thread will more than likely be closed soon, I will just say that they are all very good and stable. You might see an occasional issue but they get fixed quickly. The most stable and best rom will be the one that works well for your taste and needs. Like I said, there are a lot of great choices out there. If you don't like it, move on to the next one. That's what we do.
Any first ROM suggestions? I see that cyogen 7 rom posted all the time.
I have pretty much tried them all and I have my favorites. For Sense roms try Android Revolution, Virtuous Unity, and even the newer Stardroid rom is turning out very nicely. For AOSP roms try Adam's Ninja rom or CM7.
Try each one and make up your own mind.

[Q] Best ROM for the MT.

I'm coming from LG Revolution land and my girlfriend has the MT. She wants her phone to be like mine and be able to tether, get rid of the dumb VM boot animation (and the power off animation if possible), and have a different theme more like mine which is kindof like GB but at the same time completely different. Any help would be awesome.
Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me.
Also, I'm a major fan of the thanks button and I hit it everytime someone helps me out.
Let's see...
PunkROM has a couple extra themed apps and in some respects looks more like Gingerbread and sometimes a little different; it's also been out longer than mine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262589
I built Black Lightning off Gingerbread (and PunkROM!) as a base, and integrated the safest and most stable-looking mods. So it's minimal, but theoretically powerful too if it needs to be.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281340
Princely ROM has a Gingerbread-themed version. I can't say much about it because I haven't used it (much) and remember even less.

I've tried them all except for punk and its come down to bouncing back and forth between cm7 and miui. why would you settle for froyo when gingerbread is so stable now? For a minute miui was the best but now that the beta cm7 are fully functional and butter smooth I am finding myself less inclined to flash and that is amazing! Ruined my Samsung captivate while I was still learning, be very careful going back to froyo roms from gingerbread on that one. Darkys killed it! My Triumph however seems unbrickable and is overclocked and stable. The stock rom was a joke and I got rid of that clumsy bastard the third day. Thanx to all the devs for working hard and kikin ass!

In CM7 - You don't--at this time anyways--unless you don't mind certain things not working since the only kernel is old and outdated at this time or unless you build your own OC kernel for CM7.
There's a couple of OC kernels available for FROYO roms atm. Just check the Dev section.

CM7 or MIUI are good ROMs, now they have worked out most of the bugs for this phone besides HDMI and something with camera mirror.
I switched over from the Optimus V and I have a gtablet, im really pleased by CM7 on this phone. I haven't had any problems at all, and the battery life with the last two releases on CM7 is great.
I will try the MIUI ROM as well though, I just chose CM7 because I have had prior experience with it.
I've never had any problems with my phone on the stock-ish ROM, but then again even on my desktop Skype appears to be mirrored (although the other side is okay)... from what I've heard, this is the way desktop Skype works.

I believe the HDMI and Mirroring problem are the custom ROM bugs, but I didn't stay on stock ROM longer then one day to find out how it was.
I am used to rooting and custom ROM's now, for me it's interesting to try different things out customizing my phone.
Edit: sorry for the confusion if I implied that HDMI and Mirroring on the camera are stock ROM bugs.
I'm refusing to switch to the Gingerbread Cyanogen mod simply because it doesn't have hdmi output. Even though I can't use the HDMI output anyway. There's probably a pill to alleviate that.

I'm refusing until you can use wifi with bluetooth, and the niggling audio bugs I keep reading about go away.
I hear that the gingerbread development is winding down now, so we may just be stuck with current cm7 and miui for a while...without fixes.
If I could just figure out what is killing battery so much faster than my optimus V, I'd be happy....
b_randon15 has a newer cm7 kernel that he claims takes care of the wifi/bluetooth issue. I'd give it a try, but I cant get clockwork to work!

[Q] Best Vanilla ROM??

Hi guys (and girls?)
I traded my beloved Nexus S for a superior Infuse, and my only qualm with the device so far is that I can't seem to find a nice vanilla ROM. I just want plain Android, and HDMI support. I am sick of this blasted TouchWiz. Any suggestions/favourites out there??
I have tried the search function, but couldn't find anything. So far the best/closest I can come to vanilla is a CM7 kang. I don't like CM7. I don't have anything specific against it, I just prefer something plainer.

Hmmm maybe Infused. Yes I know its kind of old and it has touchwiz stock, but it does have the vanilla launcher. You just set it by clearing defaults for touchwiz, then hitting home and launcher or whatever it is called. The whole rom will not change, but only the launcher. Infused is a great stable rom, but poor gtg may not be coming back to update it for fixed hdmi when att ginger comes out.Other then that, I can not think of anything else except CM7 lol. By the way no gingerbread has hdmi except froyo roms and the very latest gingerbread leaks, which can easily brick your device forever with the new bootloader. Be careful lol.
Go for Infused 1.6. You have everything you need on this. But its Froyo, not GB.
The latest ATT Gingerbread release is very stable.
