Using Mytouch 4g, when I go into the About screen, I see 2.3.3, Sense 3.0, and the Build Number for Unity. However, my Kernel Version is "unavailable!" Do I need to install a Kernel? Why is this blank?
Everything seems to be operating fine, with the exception of not being able to see my 802.11n ssid.
It's a known bug. If you open up a terminal and type
Code:
uname -a
you'll see your kernel name and version.

Yes, just ran that command line and saw the response, thanks. But I've been reading ppl that flash new Kernels, is this recommended? I'm new to rooting and have my phone rooted, but have never installed a kernel.
Is this the same as installing custom roms?
Nope, kernels are a different story. You & I could have the same kernel running but have different experiences. I suggest you do some reading up on them first, probly could start with a google search.

I wouldn't replace the kernel in VU. The one they provide will be the best for it.
I believe their web page does have a option to install another custom kernel..
but again.. is there a reason you want the customer one?
there are a few kernels with volume boost added to make the speaker louder and headset louder, I think Faux updated his kernels to do this along with OC @ 2ghz and a few other tweaks. but yes some kernels work differently with others

From what I understand, Kernel is a something that contains drivers and settings for your device. If you did not have a kernel, or it was defective, I assume your phone would not work properly, or in the first case - not even boot up the os.
i flashed it using virt unity 1.29 and used the 2.6.35 Faux 0.0.9 kernel..

No, but if you have root and the paid version of the voodoo sound app, you should be able to take advantage of the voodoo sound features as the paid app has the module needed to use voodoo sound.

got the paid app but the load sound driver option is grayed out...
any ideas?
running EP1H
not sure if voodoo will work if the kernel doesnt support it but I would think Imnuts knows much much more than me

This is what I saw as well when using EP1F, I quickly refunded the app. Using GummyCharge 1.9 now on Froyo and Voodoo Sound is working.

AFAIK, Samsung will have to first release the source to a GB kernel before a module for it can be built.

not true...supercurio just needs to support the .35 charge kernel like he did for the fascinate
Other than ability to overclock, does a new kernel give you anything else like stability, speed, bug fixes or whatever over the currently installed ROM?

Thanks,
I just installed UCLA3 Radio & Kernel using CWM on a rooted, stock Rogers ROM. However the Kernel info still 2.6.35.11 in the settings menu.
The radio appears to be updated, but not the kernel.
Is this correct? Should I see a different kernel version number? If not, what's the difference with this kernel if it's still 2.6.35.11?
Woops, found the answer in another thread. Installed CPU Spy and it shows the UCLA kernel.
Besides removed CIQ and supposed speed and connectivity issues, does this kernel have anything "special" in it, like ability to under-clock, or BLN?
no, its labelled "stock." If u want these features use romracer 0.03, which has some of those

romracer 0.3 kernel does have BLN, USB-OTG Host enablement, FUSE, and a few other tweaks.... but does not have UV/OC patching.
hey stated that he MAY implement this feature, but for now u r correct. Notice I did say SOME though

yep... it's all good... actually meant to reply to harry_fine's question on uv... but quoted your reply.
I am starting up my own route of android development working with team acid and AntonX to make sure all the best features work in AOSP roms like MIUI, and in the future AOSP and BML CM7 if we make them . This is a BML kernel so don't flash it if you are running the MTD CM7. It is CWM flashable or you can extract the zImage and flash with heimdall.
This is a branch of AntonX's kernel so UV/OC, voodoo sound, and BLN are all there.
Do not flash this on a stock rom, this includes Valhalla black, AOSP style (no it's not AOSP), or anything that isn't MIUI, Cyanogenmod (BML), or AOSP (if we ever get it ).
Changes to come:
Currently working with initramfs to remove voodoo lagfix, speed up boot time, and add touch recovery.
Credits:
AntonX, this is a branch of his kernel
Team Acid, for putting up with me and their kernel work
Bhundven, for being the best dev ever, his original kernel, new initramfs and all his work fixing CM7, and his always helping me out when I'm in a pinch
m4xm4n and Bhundven for the vibrate fix on CM7 ported to BML

Would this work on a ported ics ROM that isn't cm based, but is stock based (from nexus)?

"Putting up with me"? You make us laugh with all them jokes, plus a bunch of interesting conversations. I'm glad you're on IRC so often. I'm also glad to see you develop for this phone.

If it's BML it's worth a shot. Let me know if it works for you .
Just a general reminder: there is a "Thanks" button for a reason. Please do not post just to say thanks, just hit the button.
I noticed you thanked m4xm4n for the "vibrate fix on CM7 ported to BML" will this fix the miui weak vibration bug?

Sad news is, my computer screwed up a flash and now I'm bricked. So I won't be deving for a while til I get to a t-mobile store
Woo think god, I managed to fix it. Lesson learned, don't flash from my front USB port.

The "vibrate fix" aka the switch to aries-vibrator from vibetonz was actually bhundven. I just dinked around with vibetonz until I yelled "f**k it" and flipped over the table. Bryan then made the switch.

I'm quite stupid but can you explain "OC and Non-OC flavors"
NVM I figured it out haha.
hampsterblade,
You did the wrong thing on github, you have lost all history for the project. If for any reason my project is gone, nobody will know what have been modified. You should have forked. It's not too late, you haven't made too many changes. I did exactly the same mistake originally, but FBis helped me to recover.
And why have you uploaded the whole toolchain??? You are not going to make changes to it, are you?
Since updating this kernel to the non oc version I can't uv with tegrak
