[Q] Just installed UCLA3 Radio & Kernel but Kernel still 2.6.35.11 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I just installed UCLA3 Radio & Kernel using CWM on a rooted, stock Rogers ROM. However the Kernel info still 2.6.35.11 in the settings menu.
The radio appears to be updated, but not the kernel.
Is this correct? Should I see a different kernel version number? If not, what's the difference with this kernel if it's still 2.6.35.11?

Woops, found the answer in another thread. Installed CPU Spy and it shows the UCLA kernel.
Besides removed CIQ and supposed speed and connectivity issues, does this kernel have anything "special" in it, like ability to under-clock, or BLN?

no, its labelled "stock." If u want these features use romracer 0.03, which has some of those

romracer 0.3 kernel does have BLN, USB-OTG Host enablement, FUSE, and a few other tweaks.... but does not have UV/OC patching.

hey stated that he MAY implement this feature, but for now u r correct. Notice I did say SOME though

Just trying to clarify

I've searched around, but have yet to find a definitive answer. Can I run ANY i9000 rom on the captivate as long as I use a reorient kernal, such as Setiron's?
run, yes, flawlessly, maybe, won't know until you try it.
That was the intended purpose of the reorient kernels from Xcaliberinhand. Setiron has simply extended Xcaliber's kernel with the tweaks and lagfixes of some of the other i9000 kernels.

Right on. I've been running Tayu's Lite with setirons for the last few weeks. I didn't use the rom supplied in the Dev section, though. I pieced it together separately. This is by far the best setup I have used yet, but after using the cogs previously, i became a flash junkie and want to try something else out.
I am also using Tayutama's rom but I will be trying out cognition once true source code has been released allowing proper kernels and tweaks to be done. I imagine cog will come back with a vengeance after the true update and source are released. Happy flashing.
Can I simply flash a new kernel on top of my ROM? For instance, can I flash SetrioN 1.3.3 if I'm currently runiing 1.2? Just put in in Odin under Phone? PDA?
Still learning here.

If you've made adjustments to you OC/UV, you need to reset those to default. After that, you can just flash the new one right on top using CWM rec.
Thanks. I haven't messed with those settings.
Props to both of you for asking your questions in general. Remember to use a good descriptive subject in the future though.

[Q] Faux123 stock ov kernal & paul's patch

hey everyone,
does anybody know if these two are compatible to work together or is it something where it's either or? i've been looking through the threads but haven't manage to find any answer for it. i appreciate any answers.
THANKS!
All reports say there is no reason for Pauls patch on custom roms.
oh alright. thanks for responding

Faux kernel is not a ROM. He is using it on that ROM - so the question was not specifically answered.
I had Paul's patch on stock kernel when I first flashed faux kernel, but don't know for sure if it is needed (ie - is the patch of the kernel or something else?).

Let me be more specific in case the OP did not get it. No, you do not need Pauls patch for custom kernels or roms. It is strictly designed for the stock rom to fix a mistake by LG.

The patch was an updated services.jar messed up by lg in the stock ROM. Do kernels also include a services.jar?
If so, then no need when kernels are flashed either, as it would be overwritten. This would be the clarification he (and I) was looking for. If not ??
Note - when I look in a whole ROM zip file - I can find it. Cannot when I open a kernel zip file.

What does that mean.so is the kernel baked into the rom: when we install faux's rom, we automatically get the kernel .

Yes - if you flash faux ROM - you get his kernel as part of it.
But the OP was about using faux (with) stock kernel on the stock froyo ROM. The stock ROM had some messed-up up stuff by LG in the (I have read) services.jar file in the stock ROM.
He asked if he could (should) use the paul patch with this combination. Since the services.jar is (I also believe) not changed by the kernel only, it appears that it should be flashed on top of the stock ROM once (unless you wipe and it is then gone), and then flash the kernel (I did that).
For ALL CM ROMs - different services.jar - no problem. But for EB and other stock based froyp ROM's - I am not sure. If the Dev's built paul's fix into the services.jar -then they are OK. If not, they might be able to use the fix also.
Would REALLY like to hear from one of the Dev's on this. Been all over the forums, and with respect to the kernel only and other than stock froyo ROM's - it has not been clearly spelled out.
its for STOCK roms not custom kernels dont matter in this pauls patch fixes a problem with lg stock rom all custom roms should have this fixed

Just flashed Virtuous Unity, but what about Kernel?

Using Mytouch 4g, when I go into the About screen, I see 2.3.3, Sense 3.0, and the Build Number for Unity. However, my Kernel Version is "unavailable!" Do I need to install a Kernel? Why is this blank?
Everything seems to be operating fine, with the exception of not being able to see my 802.11n ssid.
It's a known bug. If you open up a terminal and type
Code:
uname -a
you'll see your kernel name and version.

Yes, just ran that command line and saw the response, thanks. But I've been reading ppl that flash new Kernels, is this recommended? I'm new to rooting and have my phone rooted, but have never installed a kernel.
Is this the same as installing custom roms?
Nope, kernels are a different story. You & I could have the same kernel running but have different experiences. I suggest you do some reading up on them first, probly could start with a google search.

I wouldn't replace the kernel in VU. The one they provide will be the best for it.
I believe their web page does have a option to install another custom kernel..
but again.. is there a reason you want the customer one?
there are a few kernels with volume boost added to make the speaker louder and headset louder, I think Faux updated his kernels to do this along with OC @ 2ghz and a few other tweaks. but yes some kernels work differently with others

From what I understand, Kernel is a something that contains drivers and settings for your device. If you did not have a kernel, or it was defective, I assume your phone would not work properly, or in the first case - not even boot up the os.
i flashed it using virt unity 1.29 and used the 2.6.35 Faux 0.0.9 kernel..

Edit: forgot to mention, stock kernel on VU is unity v2... might as well update to v4 lol

[Q] How to add BLN to latest ICS Kernel

Hello guys
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to edit the kernels from the ICS available roms and simply add the BLN notifications?
I do not want or need all the other tweaks.
I just want BLN added to this, nothing else.
Thank you
EDIT: IS the OTA ICS kernel source known yet?
No one?

have you seen dev section and see thoes ICS kernel ?
Using NSTools you can simply enable or disable the tweaks you want. At least you can on the GB kernels. I'd assume this the case with the ICS kernels that are available, but I haven't tried out ICS honestly.

Yes but those kernel have way too much tweaking for me. I want something simple, as my experience with that sort of kernels has drained my battery more than with a stock kernel (with fresh installs and all the wipes)

Yes but I was looking to implement that on a stock ics kernel. Just BLN, nothing else.
So, there is no one here on the forum that has or knows how to implement BLN in a kernel?!
people only check the android development section...that is sad bud true.
As far as i know BLN does not work with stock kernel neither with NStools nor with any other app.
Stock kernel simply does not support BLN.
People aren't building kernels from thin air, they are using the released source files for the stock ones and tweaking them afterwards. I only want to add bln to those stock releases.

He built an almost stock kernel for GB with BLN, so i'm sure he's already working on it.
Well, technically you could insmod a kernel module in...
that's what I want, to simply add to the ICS kernel source the BLN, nothing else.
I'm just trying to find a way to do it because this is not my area of expertise...
is the source for the latest ICS kernel for nexus S known? for version 3.0.8-gb55e9ac [email protected] #1 ?
tks for all of your tips btw
rooted ICS, but bln ain't working.
the kernel mods aren't there, so as the liblights; the app is not enough.
we have to wait for a modded kernel to use with stock rom.
my problem is that when every kernel is build by some developer, it is released with several mods that I don't want. I simply wan't to pick up the latest ICS kernel source and add the bln libraries and necessary files for it to work. nothing else, nothing less, just that minor tweak.

however no one of these are working with stock OTA ICS 4.0.3 as far as now.
let's see what the future brings..
BLN has been added to the stock cm9 kernel
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#change,11018
tks, so this means bln has been added to the latest kernel contained in OTA 4.0.3? or that it can now be added to the kernel? sorry man, I'm reading a lot about all of this, but if anything,I think I'm getting more confused...damn...

No, he was stating that Cyanogenmod has added BLN to their kernel. BLN will most likely never be added to stock android. You will have to download a compatible kernel.

I was bored so here is a kernel that should work for you.
Make sure you Nandroid before install as I'm not responsible for any screwups.
You may have to flash it twice if WiFi doesn't work the first time.
Only tested on i9020t.
I cherry-picked Ezekeel's BLN for this so he deserves credit.
edit:use NStools to set blinking

Thank you for your help, I will do a nandroid and flash it. Will give you a feedback soon as I have results.
Btw, This is like stock 4.0.3 ICS but with BLN added? No governors, undervolts and other tweaks, right?
Thanks once again for caring about the subject.

Casca
Hello again
Flashed it last night and I believe it is working nicely my friend.thank you very much for helping.
Just for the record, although both, bln app and nstools work, it works better with bln app from the market as it alows enabling bln for missed calls also. With nstools everything was using bln except the missing calls.
Can/should I share your work?
Thank you once again for your help

You can but I don't really have any intentions of providing support, hence why I didn't post this in the dev section. It shouldn't need any as it's stock with only bln added so it shouldn't be a problem.

[Q] UCLA3 Modem

Am I able to simply flash the UCLA3 stock modem onto the current rom/kernel I am using or do I need to change those?
I am running TPC v3 with da_G .42 on ATT.
Yes, you can. I am on Sky-Ice and I simply flashed the UCLA3 stock modem on top of it. No issues with it.

I tried faux 010u, but it doesnt seem to allow me to use smartassv2 governor, whereas da_g does.

Well from what faux claims, he says that the governors thats are with his kernel are the only ones that are compatible with the qualcomm chip.
