[Q] Honeycomb 3.2? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Did ASUS say anything on twitter/facebook about Honeycomb 3.2 yet?

I'm pretty sure honeycomb 3.2 is just 3.1 modified for 7" tablets.

3.2 is for 7 inch tablets but they also say there will be bug fixes. Its not a major update
" Honeycomb 3.2 is expected to offer a range of bug fixes , plus improved hardware acceleration and a number of apps are reported to be getting updates which include the music app, movies and widgets."

I am pretty sure the Honeycomb 3.2 exsits on TF101.
But I do not know when it will be released.
My friends in Asus had tested it,
They say it is more smooth and bugs less.

Hardware acceleration caught my eye... The TF101 seems to have none...

I asked on both ASUS UK and ASUS (or asus usa or something) Facebook pages when 3.2 was coming. The UK page commented on the 21st June just saying 'Nothing has been confirmed yet.'

Bumping the thread. Seems like small samples of WiFi Xooms are getting the update as per the article here, so most likely we'll get 3.2 in the following weeks.

Good catch. Hopefully something's on the way soon.

Update: I posted the following on the official Asus Facebook page:
-----
Dear Asus: Honeycomb 3.2 is arriving for Motorola Xoom owners now. Can you please tell your faithful Eee Pad Transformer owners whether this update should also be rolling out for us soon?
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/07/1...torola-xoom-rolling-out-now-in-small-batches/
-----
...and it was deleted within less than two minutes. Somebody's watching, but right now, they're not answering.
Edit: Turns out, it wasn't deleted, just hidden from their wall -- and they replied that 3.2 is in testing now and will be released!. Great news...
http://www.facebook.com/ASUS/posts/255601544453797

Last time it trailed by a week or two. I'm sure in a month we'll have 3.2 official and probably the kernels/roms from the mods.

One thng i like about the transformer is that it is almost vanilla honeyomb so it shouldn't be too hard for them to port it over ... hopefully sooner the better ... and i have to laugh the acer one JUST got 3.1

I think the deletion is automatic. Every time that I post something it is deleted within a second (as soon as I refresh the page). Unfortunately that means that someone might not be watching...

ASUS Sweden has confirmed on their facebook page that an update will come but they have not got an ETA.

over in the xoom forums there doesn't seem to be a huge number of improvements in 3.2. Probably shouldnt get all riled up about it

Looks like keyboard lag is a symptom of a poorly built stock browser in honeycomb. (Not Asus's fault) The Xoom has the same problem with the stock keyboard.
And 3.2 doesn't fix it.
Video of Xoom with 3.2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn8iBsEX4LE
And yet, Opera doesn't have this lag! WTF Google!

I just checked on the Asus facebook page and found this.
"Hi guys,
We’re testing Android 3.2 on the Transformer, and hope to have it released soon! When it is released, you’ll definitely read about it on our Facebook wall =)

At least that's somewhat reassuring.

I have no idea if a honeycomb update would come out for the G tablet, but: http://androinica.com/2011/01/28/honeycomb-update-for-notionink-adam-in-the-works/

Actually I think the Xoom is supposed to be released at the end of Feb with Honeycomb. Might come quicker than we think.

That's the thing about community development... no hard release dates. These guys are not answering to stockholders if they don't release ROMs on time, they do this on their own personal free time. The real question is when will we see the offical Viewsonic Flash 10.1 that was advertised on the packaging.
Please post these things in the right area, this is not a "Theme and Apps" thread.
I asked that question of Viewsonic gTablet customer support late this afternoon while calling on a different issue (the clock app aborts). No idea when or if possible; that's in a different area of the company.

Ask Adobe. They are the ones with the control on that. If they say you cant "officially" put flash on a device then the manufacturer cant release flash. Stupid to advertise something you cant provide but its still Adobe sitting on it not Viewsonic

The XOOM boots in less than 10 seconds. Mmm, Tegra 2 goodness. and TNT + Tegra2 + Android 2.2 takes about 30 - 45 seconds. I thought 30 - 45 seconds is very good already. Just imagine one day the gtab meets honeycomb... it must taste sooooo sweet. well, I can wait for the dev to build a custom honeycomb while I am still enjoying the tnt lite/vegan.

netflix on android

well i wonder if the reason it works on the moto tab and the galaxy tab is because they paid netflix? what other reason would they have if i simple file edit fixes it...
This should be in General Discussion. To answer your question: In the case of the Transformer, Netflix themselves nor their app is responsible for it not running on the Transformer. Your theory keeps getting kicked around the forums...the idea that money is changing hands. There is no extortion here. ASUS did/does not need to pay Netflix anything. They just need to compile and include a newer version of libnvomx for the Transformer.
That's interesting, but that's not what ASUS claims. After asking them why there still isn't Netflix support after the 3.2 update, I got this response:
The current version of Netflix available on the Android Market is only supported for Android 2.2 based phones, and not any Honeycomb tablets. While installing the Netflix 1.3 APK has enabled Netflix for other Honeycomb tablets, officially, they are still not supported. At this time, users will have to wait on an updated release from Netflix.

Movies is in my Android Market though.
Maybe Netflix hasn't updated the market yet.
Just root your tablet and take it into your own hands.
netflix and market has nothing to do with it.
sry im on 3.2 and dont feel like downgrading...
You can root 3.2
I did it earlier today and it took like 10 mins. Couldn't have been easier.
Just use the batch script that works for 3.2

So what if it's not out? It's a supported device.
Guys,
The ASUS support rep is wrong. Netflix 1.3 DOES work on Honeycomb tablets, the XOOM being one of them. There is no conspiracy here, no matter how hard you look. When attempting to stream from Netflix on the Transformer using Honeycomb 3.2, you get that error message. A peek in logcat shows the Netflix app yells about not finding function DRM.play inside OMX. This is a function of a NEWER version of libnvomx than ships on the Transformer or in it's updates.
XOOM has newer libnvomx w/ drm.play function = working netflix
Transformer (and other tablets) with libnvomx WITHOUT drm.play = broke netflix
Since the hardware inside the XOOM and the Transformer are VERY similar, I was able to pull the newer libnvomx.so from the XOOM and overwrite the one on my Transformer to make Netflix function. That's ALL the Netflix app cares about. It doesn't care what device you are on, or if Netflix has been "paid" by that manufacturer. That said, because the Transformer IS a different device than the XOOM, things break when doing this. I do believe the only problem on the Transformer that I've seen reported is that the libnvomx replacement breaks WMV playback. Not a big issue for most, tbh. The same fix works on the Acer Iconia, but replacing the file breaks their camera.
You need to petition the manufacturer of your particular device to compile an updated version of OMX w/ the drm.play function and include it in an official OTA.
Otherwise root and replace the file yourself with one from a different device and deal with whatever breaks.
^This is how my Netflix patch works. It's a flashable zip with nothing but libnvomx.so from a XOOM 3.2 ROM. I think we are lucky on the Transformer that nothing breaks except for WMV playback.
well the question is did netflix provide moto with that drm files cause more than likely its talor made for them and it may be the only thing that uses it
It IS about money.
Each manufacturer has to pay software/hardware engineers to design their devices and make sure the device works with Android.
--Some manufacturers are likely paying for more/better engineers.
In our case, it's a matter of Asus paying someone to get Netflix working. As noted above, anytime you make changes on software you might break something else. So the engineer(s) have to do all kinds of "magic" to make sure that something works like it's supposed to without disrupting something else...

No, that's not a realistic question at all. As I clearly stated, the drm functions are a part of OMX. Moto simply is using more up to date libraries in their ROM than ASUS.

Agreed. It is NOT, however, about device manufacturers having to pay some sort of imaginary extortion fee to Netflix so that their app will run on a particular device.

When asking about dock RMA I asked about why Netflix was promoted on Transformer website, by Asus etc...
I got this response.
Thank you for contacting ASUS. I do apologize for any possible inconvenience or confusion you have experienced thus far. Please advise that while a native Netflix application may not yet be available, any development or availability of Netflix service on Android tablets is controlled strictly by Netflix and/or Google, as hardware manufacturers have no bearing or control over when software applications are available for the Android OS. With that said, I believe that a Netflix application for Android is well into development and should be available relatively soon.
Again I do apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you again for your consideration.

All true, but still didn't answer my question.
Only hope is Google/Netflix get things worked out sooner rather than later.
That reply from the ASUS rep makes it sound like they didn't even know that a Netflix app for Android was available. Clueless.

Got issues? Contact Asus directly!

If you're experiencing issues with your tablet, I/O related or otherwise, let Asus know!
We can discuss all we want in these forums, but I've yet to see Gary or Tien from the Transformer (Prime) forums showing up here. So until they do, I suggest you let Asus know about these issues by contacting their customer support directly:
http://support.asus.com/contactus.aspx?SLanguage=en
Use the technical inquiry form or the hotline phone numbers and explain your problems with the tablet. Summarize the issues you're experiencing and be polite while doing so. If Asus have any sort of QA system in place (well, one can only hope), there should be alarm bells ringing when a single product gets a lot of technical support issues in a short time frame. Maybe that'll get us some actual feedback on these issues. If that ends up being in the form of Gary or Tien coming into these forums to keep us up to date as well it's even better.
And if you're perfectly happy and content with your newest purchase (and/or you just need to convince yourself that it's perfect since it was so costly): good for you! Also this thread isn't for you.
TL;DR - Whine directly to Asus at http://support.asus.com/contactus.aspx?SLanguage=en
Since you are so "tight" with Gary & Tien...tell them to get in here nd talk with us. We have alot to ask and say!

Here's the reply I received from Asus regarding the TF700 I/O issues:
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
Internet Explorer 9 Pages Do Not Load (Blank White Page)
This is due to GPU (hardware) acceleration not working which is enabled in Internet Explorer 9 by default. Usually Internet Explorer 9 would detect your GPU doesn't support GPU acceleration and would disable GPU acceleration, however sometimes this isn't the case. To make web pages load you need to disable GPU acceleration. To do this, go into Internet Options -> Advanced tab and from there ensure 'Software Rendering Mode' is checked.

This is what you get when you hire baboons to handle your support questions. I've had responses like this -- mostly in the form of "canned responses" -- from several larger companies. The aforementioned baboons do not actually READ the question, they fire off a response based on a keyword they see (oh, errrm..... lag..... -- <canned response> ). Even the personnel department of my former employer did this. Funny though.

That was the funny part of it, and the sad part, as well. They didn't even read the original question.
I had sent a complaint about the herkee-jerkee and stop-start-hesitate performance, and received a response this AM. Basically it says to do a cold reboot and data wipe; and if that doesn't fix it, do an RMA.
The cold reboot did not really do much, if anything; but I'm going to hold off on the RMA with hopes that Asus can do a firmware or software update to fix the problem. We can hope!
I have to find it, but i remember seeing a blurb from the asus tech guys that they were aware of this issue and planning on getting a update out very soon.
I think it was from Mark Tien about a week ago. Usually asus is good about releasing firmware updates to fix these sort of issues. I have always had good updates and support with mboards.

Same, that was the first thing I noticed. Second was the massive amount of comments beneath the article. I wonder how much they are getting in ad impression revenue though
Also, yes, the OP should have done the research but no one needs to call him/her out. I'm sure they were just super excited. We'll all be like kids in a jelly bean store when it drops.
(yes, absolutely terrible pun but well worth it and accurate).

I missed it the first time too.

I read the news on this same website last night, not sure how credible it is myself. This is just about 24 hrs old... i think it would have made waves across the android world by now if it was official, so my hopes aren't very high.... i WOULD be incredibly happy if it was released though... curious to see if it alleviates any of my tf700 concerns...

Again, no source or actual user reports. Those websites are just making **** up for ad impressions, then other ****ty sites copy those articles without any fact checking.

I laughed.
I have them as well, and while I would like them to pack up and leave, I concur with the OP that it is not a deal breaker of any sort.
I can't remember having them on ICS -- would this be a JB thing?
Only happens to me very rarely, only when browsing, once or twice a day at most. Never in games, films, music or documents...
Working on it?-- That implies that they still care about us. They don't. I have almost 50 of these that I support, all have the issue and even after working with Tien and Gary to get a resolution.... they have given me absolutely nothing as far as support goes.
They have suggested cold boots and factory resets... that is all. And NO, those actions fix NOTHING.
Tien... you even abandoned my support call..
Last communication that I had with him was this on 11/7:
Hi Jordan,
Sorry for the late reply, but I just wanted to inform you that we have passed all this information back to HQ so they can test and figure out a solution. I am confident, with all the material we've supplied, that they can duplicate and figure something out. I just want to thank you for sticking through this. Hopefully the new firmware update will address all these issues.

Tien,
I am assuming by now that you or your company has been able to reproduce the graphics issues, reboots and issues that have been happening with the TF700. If you are having trouble with that, there are large groups of users getting these problems, documented here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811538&page=14
Please let me know what asus plans to do to resolve these issues. Again, these are company machines that are relied on everyday as a primary work space for some. Please email me asap to let me know a time frame that I can expect some sort of resolution.

I was having them, but didn't notice any since the update I got today. I *think* they fixed it... I'm looking for somebody to confirm that I'm not dreaming...
I've never noticed them. When and how do they appear?

From time to time, a black horizontal line flashes across the screen, usually in the upper third (at least when I noticed), seems to be random. Looks like a GPU driver issue (maybe NVidia's fault?) because it appeared first with the JB updates.

Need the display to be mostly white, then just wait. It's real quick maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a second.
I see this once every couple minutes on cleanRom 2.7.x

Good. Then I'm not crazy... I think I saw one... But it's hardly noticeable now. It's way better than before. This is good! Thanks Asus for this one.

Well, I'm there with you on this one, but for me it went from unbearable to just annoying. But yeah, there are still there. I just noticed one 2 mins ago.
So thank you Asus, but don't sit on this one yet cause it's still an unresolved issue........

Yep, correction on my earlier report of none after 23 update, thought I saw one last night, know I saw one this morning, no developers options ticked.
But frequency and duration greatly reduced....still needs more work though.
I concur with above poster, still not totally resolved
Definitely less than last update, but still there every once in a while.
Thanks for the improvement, but keep looking.
There was an update yesterday?! OMG, I hope CROMI Dev picks it up soon! Its soo irritating. Certain apps seem to trigger it more often than others! I'm using CROMI 2.7.2 .

I'm pretty sure sbdags is applying his magic as we speak. He has a lot to go over, so give it a few days. I do hope the new update remedies it to a large extent, because they are annoying.
The remark of "no developer options ticked" seems to deny me the pleasure of disabling 2D GPU GUI rendering and seeing them leave automagically. I had that idea yesterday evening -- well, I'm going to try anyway. (If it should somehow work out, that'd be a strong lead to suspect a driver issue. Damn you, NVIDIA! )
PS: are we all on CROMI? (Me: v2.7.2) I guess stock ROM is no different to all intents and purposes as far as the black line issue goes. Do any of the people in here that use AOSP/AOKP/CM10 have them too?
My Nexus 7 used to do this as well. I think it's a problem with the Tegra 3 while the wifi is being used. I haven't noticed it on my Nexus 7 since 4.2 though.

Interesting suggestion! I hadn't noticed anuyhthing partiucular in connection with the WiFi being on while the problem occurred. I am curious to see if I can ''fix'' this myself. Anoter workaround for an -- essentially -- hardware issue? (If you are correct, and that carries a rather high probablility, you'd suspect the Tegra3 to be susceptible to some kind of EMF reception and static build-up internally or something,. Ugh, another unsolvable issue to contend with. And still I like this device very much.
