Just wondering what converter if any is being used to put movies on the g2x. I put some David files in my dropbox at home n they have trouble playing.
G2x Deez Nuts
I have pretty good luck with Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/
The iPhone preset works great, or you can play around with the settings if you want higher res for HDMI. I always save as .mp4 with the sound set on 2 channel to save space.
Cool thx bro I'm gonna give it a try

Hi,
Does someone know if it is possible to stream videos over SMB to/from Captivate?
Is there some app for it?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'm using Astro File Manager w/ Astro File Manager - SMB Module to access my Windows machine.
It works out pretty well...
Cool. I will try it! Thanks

If you have windows 7, you can turn on media streaming under the sharing and network center and use AllShare to connect.
I have not tried yet, but i have done this with other DLNA devices.
Estrongs file manager works really good. The only problem there is no video player that can play .avi files. At least I can't find one.

Some of my .avi's work, and some don't. Could it be because of length? Boondock Saints II will play, but Alice in Wonderland will not, both .avis.

Avi is only a container not a format. Most players will only play certain formats at certain bit rates on mobile devices.
If a movie you really want to watch will not play you will have to re-encode it to the correct format before it will work.
example: both divx and xvid are both typically .avi files, but two different formats. If the player supports one but not the other then only some of your avi files will play.
I've installed Rock(divx)Player (non-market app) and at least I can play some of .avi files from sdcard that I couldn't play before. You can get it here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?enolzhkrmmy - just use adb install to sideload it
A friend of mine recorded a video with her Samsung Captivate, and sent it to me via e-mail.
I can't play it on my phone. ("Sorry, this video cannot be played.")
I am able to play the video on my PC, and I transferred it to my phone's SD Card using a USB cable and Mass Storage Mode.
I have the default video player installed, nothing extra and fancy.
I would think that there wouldn't be any problems playing the video on my phone since it was created on a phone.
I know there are other video apps out there, and I would love a recommendation for one that I can set as default and lose the built in video playback.
I would prefer to fix the built in player however.
I'm running KD1, stock, odexed, rooted.
If you're looking for a player. I like double twist. Easy to use in my opinion and I never encountered a problem

My phone is stock and won't play mp4's or mp3's. It has been doing this for about a week since my last ota.
My phone will play Mp4s, but only if they are recorded on my phone. If it came from someone else's phone, I may as well forget it. Very frustrating.
Slinger, you have to be careful since even if a file is a ".mp4" it might be encoded with a different codec. Our phones support MP4 files with a x264 codec for video and AAC audio. If the file you're trying to play isn't in that format, the default player won't accept it.
You can download Rockplayer Lite to play most other formats:

Thanks for the tip. So is the encoding on Captivate different? (that would explain a lot.)

Captivate encoding is the same as the vibrant, meaning the file should play on the galaxy s 4g. If I had a captivate or vibrant I would test it out and report back.

This is kind of random, but my sister has the same problem on her vibrant. She downloaded launcher 7 to try it out and all of a sudden her videos played again...nothing else was changed.

Is there an app that can play a ripped dvd that is stored on the SGT?
That depends entirely on the codec you used for your ripped DVD. Have you transcoded the movie, is it a .vob, or have you kept it in and .iso?

I'd be using folders with the usual dvd structure and with .vob files or .iso. There's no problem playing transcoded files of course. Thanks for any info.
Have you tried the Market?
i understand your request, but i think you would be better off encoding the video to a recognized file. You can get DVD quality video at a fraction of the space leaving you more room for other stuff or more video.
But if you still want DVD folder support try DAROON PLAYER
it's free at the Android Market just search "DAROON"
hope it works for you i haven't tried it.

Hi the I have all my music in .wma format will not play on my sidekick 4g please help
Use a different player? Try doubletwist rocket player or something like that it should work.
If not you have to get mp3 files (mp3 is actually the best for music as it saves more space then most do)
Sent from my SGH-T839 using xda app-developers app
MP3 was developed in early 90s... Yes, it is still the most popular music format, but NOT best in any way. AAC+ is at least twice smaller at same quality, FLAC sounds much better, etc...
But anyway, there are many players for any audio format for any Android phone. Artofdying9's question is pretty strange.
I use mp3 sac an all that is too annoying to covert 3k songs
