How to stream videos over SMB? - Captivate General

Hi,
Does someone know if it is possible to stream videos over SMB to/from Captivate?
Is there some app for it?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

I'm using Astro File Manager w/ Astro File Manager - SMB Module to access my Windows machine.
It works out pretty well...

Cool. I will try it! Thanks

If you have windows 7, you can turn on media streaming under the sharing and network center and use AllShare to connect.
I have not tried yet, but i have done this with other DLNA devices.

Estrongs file manager works really good. The only problem there is no video player that can play .avi files. At least I can't find one.

Some of my .avi's work, and some don't. Could it be because of length? Boondock Saints II will play, but Alice in Wonderland will not, both .avis.

Avi is only a container not a format. Most players will only play certain formats at certain bit rates on mobile devices.
If a movie you really want to watch will not play you will have to re-encode it to the correct format before it will work.
example: both divx and xvid are both typically .avi files, but two different formats. If the player supports one but not the other then only some of your avi files will play.

I've installed Rock(divx)Player (non-market app) and at least I can play some of .avi files from sdcard that I couldn't play before. You can get it here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?enolzhkrmmy - just use adb install to sideload it

AllShare App

did anybody has any problem with AllShare app? it can find my home media server (Twonkymedia in my Qnap) but it can never load the content list.
I can load twonkey filelist but I can't make allshare play most of video files (mostly hd ones)

My guess is that your HD files are in MKV format which the Tab doesn't understand. It would need to transcode them into a format the Tab knows what to do with.
For me, none of my .avi work :-(

The Tab does play .mkv files.
All you need to do is use something like Astro or ES File Explorer to select the files and then open up in the player. They then play fine.
With Astro you press and hold on the file and from the selection select Open As, then Video, then choose your video player.
For ES File Explorer you simply click on the file and from the selection select Video and then again the video player you wish to use.
Regardless the stock video player although it does not show .mkv files in it's list it does however play them fine.
Mine does not even show any content, be it video or just jpg, it will just keep trying to load, and after a few mins, it will just stop with an empty list.

It could be the way that the Allshare app on the Tab works. I know that my Epic will show information that my Tab won't. I read that it is how the Tab requests data from the server. I wonder if we could pull the Allshare app from the Epic and put it on the Tab.

Ive never seen Mobo Player go out of synch.
Did you try changing hardware/software mode and trying that?
Mobo player is the best so far imo.
I agree. Mobo Player is the only one I've been able to find that I can stream video with my Tversity media server. Been able to play everything I've thrown at it so far.

I us TVersity, too. But Mobo Don't find the Server. Where i can find the TVersity Streaming Server in the Mobo Player?

Im using rock player, it played EVERY video file i have asked it to run.
try diceplayer
Rock/Mobo/Vital/vPlayer can not use hw decoder when playing file that isn't supported by system like MKV(+DTS/FLAC).
Diceplayer can play MKV/M2TS files using HW Decoder.so
diceplayer use almost same power as stock player. sw codec base player need more power.
Xperia Play have QSD8255. it can play 720p High level 3.1~4.1
I had issues with RockPlayer on my XP, can't remember if I tried MoboPlayer.
I'm using arcMedia Player and that has played everything I have thrown at it.
Android's media playing capabilities definitely seems to be weaker than that of iPhone and Windows IMHO.

You just access the media server address in your browser and use the web interface to find the video you want that way. Then choose Mobo Player to play the video.

Thanks for mentioning of diceplayer - i tried it and seems good for everything but cannot play WMV files - it has an option to play them stock but regardless of what I set it too does not play them.
you dont need a DNLA server such as ps3media center or tversity to stream your media.
Install the cifs/tuns modules (or flash my system.img with it all built in) and use cifs manager to map your pc's network drives to your sdcard.
You can now stream video, pictures and audio over your wifi network without any extra software running on your PC.
and if you wanna get tricky you can run a vpn to your pc and connect to it and stream music while away from your house ;D

Thanks for the recommendation on arcMedia. It worked flawlessly with .avi, .div, .divx, .srt subtitles in spanish failed with accented letters and non-english characters but japanese subtitles worked perfect, and they look really sharp.
Even though MoboPlayer was recommended by a lot of people and someone reviewed it (I searched for that thread but I couldn't find it again), .divx wasn't recognized as a video file, .div closed after a split second and .avi's audio was out of synch like hell. I didn't even check if subtitles were supported.
Mobo has worked the best transfered plenty of BR Rips from PB and they look amazing on the xplay. People at work are like wtf.

Mobo player has a soft decoder that plays all video files there are out.

Someone mentioned this to me, how do you go about setting a vpn up, would it work for network connected storage?
Also how safe is it to use?

don't know about vpn but get "File Expert" from the market and you can map network drives (including NAS drives, i.e. PC can be off) and stream video via wifi (dice player or other players supporting your formats will be needed, otherwise your are limited to MP4 format) - I mapped my NAS device using internal IP address - don't know how secure it would be if you enable external web access to it through external IP and not sure if it would work as an FTP or something for downloading only not streaming possibly.
I use upnplay for streaming over a network in conjunction with moboplayer works great (probably the 2 best free apps iv ever come across).
Im interested in setting up a vpn to access my content whilst out and about or through someone elses wifi. Might have to invest in a sling box

I use Wyse PocketCloud from the Market to access two machines at work - one via remote desktop to take control of it, one with UltraVNC to share with other people on it. But if it's file sharing not just using your PCs' desktops - one of the guys here uses remote desktop to put files he needs into the Dropbox remotely, then picks them up in the Dropbox on his mobile. I don't use Dropbox yet - want to try setting up external access to the network files first to see how they work in File Expert if at all. Maybe TUN/CIFS modules are better for that but I haven't tried them out either.
Mobo Player the best!
and for audio FYI, i'd go for PowerAMP!
I'm using rock player, no issue for me so far.

[Q] dvd player?

Is there an app that can play a ripped dvd that is stored on the SGT?
That depends entirely on the codec you used for your ripped DVD. Have you transcoded the movie, is it a .vob, or have you kept it in and .iso?

I'd be using folders with the usual dvd structure and with .vob files or .iso. There's no problem playing transcoded files of course. Thanks for any info.
Have you tried the Market?
i understand your request, but i think you would be better off encoding the video to a recognized file. You can get DVD quality video at a fraction of the space leaving you more room for other stuff or more video.
But if you still want DVD folder support try DAROON PLAYER
it's free at the Android Market just search "DAROON"
hope it works for you i haven't tried it.

Sorry for the noob..
But are three different software, because i don't find in market?
EDIT: Sorry, maybe you made a typo, should be ES FileExplorer?
so i can connect via upnp and associate moboplayer when playing a video
I understand right?
Oops my bad. Yes typo.
Yes once u can see your files via upnp or smb or ftp etc... you can select it and it will ask which player to use.moboplayer with codec pack play all my files so far
try Plex, UpnPlay or just FileManagerHD with Rockplayer
Plex
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.plexapp.android&feature=search_result - also download the PC server program
UpnPlay
https://market.android.com/details?id=cx.hoohol.silanoid&feature=search_result
FileManagerHD
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rhmsoft.fm.hd&feature=search_result - set up a new network location.
Rockplayer
https://market.android.com/details?...er.android.unified.lite&feature=search_result - use this to play the movies you see with FileManagerHD
Make sure you have shared your folders in Windows and added them to your Windows Media Player library, this will make them visible to the ASUS.
If you are rooted and running one of the CIFS enabled kernels you can mount your share using CIFS manager. Doing this, I can play the files directly from my file explorer using any application that supports the filetype I wish.
You don't need to be rooted to play movies though the file manager though, using File Manager HD and Rockplayer I can do this using my smb/upnp shares.
Thanks to all
I've tryed Plex, but 720p videos run choppy, the others are fine, but are also fine with ES Filexplorer & Moboplayer, like suggested in the first reply.
I will try all your suggested software to find the right combination for my needs.

How to play this file on TF101 or any other Android device?

I can't seem to figure out how to play the following stream on my transformer? I tried BS player as well as stock browser and dolphin for pad.

Hi, this is an ASF stream (Windows Media Video 9 - WMV3). On your PC try to save it (stream it) to a file with Videolan etc. and then (re)encode it with Mediacoder, HandBrake etc (DVD Catalyst has presets for Android devices including Transformer but it's not free). Good luck.
Agreeing with above, and adding that IMO Handbrake is your best bet. Encode the file as MKV. Android can play MKV files natively.
Thanks guys but what if it was a live streaming?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
i use download helper to make a copy of live recordings on my pc then do the conversion later using what ever program you like.
have you tried Tunein Radio app? it's a player for online radios, and I use it to listen to a Radio I like that broadcasts in Windows Media format (at least for it's desktop edition).
Its a video file though
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Is that link still active?
Try the streaming on yxplayer... and tell us if it works
have you tried using remote desktop and have it stream while you view your desktop?
