When I use WiFi tethering, it stops working every five minutes or so, as in the network is still being broadcast, but no pages will load. I confirmed that it is not the computer. Does this happen to any of you?

Its because you have apps up/downloading which will put tethering on hold.
Your apps have priority over the tethering, there's no work around to that.
Best bet is to check your apps settings to see which one runs randomly or constantly.
I suspect it would be the lookout app that is running, change settings.
I still have this problem too, but in my case its because I only get 1 or 2 bars signal.

First let me say I love my G2x overall and I have no desire to return it or even leave TMobile. But.........
Let me start this by stating that I have Verizon fiOS at home and a Netgear Wireless AP. My phone and various other equipment connect to the Netgear for internet access. I've noticed on my phone that at random times I have a full wireless signal and 4G (2G or G, depending on the time of day I suppose) on my notification bar. I originally didn't think much about it thinking my wireless would override the 4G.
Well I decided to root my phone and use BloatFreezer to freeze some apps (MyAccount, Qik, TeleNav, etc), plus I believe many feel that MyAcount is the cause of this, but with all 3 instances of it frozen is it still the reason behind this?
Last night I had it happen yet again and I ran speedtest just to see which of the 2 was the main one. Well not to my surprise the cell data was overriding my wireless.
I'm (hopefully) attaching the 2 pictures I took. One with the celldata active and showing what SpeedTest reported and a 2nd with cell data off and the new speedtest report.
My basic question here is what service/app/etc am I needing to freeze to avoid this again, it's extremely annoying when I'm trying to watch youtube only to have my phone in the middle attempt to use cell data and it can't due to reception and boot me from the video, or when I'm downloading from the market.
I noticed this also. Usually when opening up Market or My Account. I know for fact that My Account only works over cell tower so it will automatically disable wifi and bring back 3g. Dunno about Market but I suspect the same.
just get an app with a widget to turn off data when you are using wifi???? I dont have this issue at all so I can't really help much, but its an alternative, for now.
Doesnt wifi calling turn data off completely when connected? Could try that.

Correct. This would work.
Believe its the tmo my account app, freeze it and see if it helps.
G2X
I have myaccount frozen already. My wifi calling turns on whenever it feels like it, it sometimes turns on right away other times it takes an hour or so to finally connect. Ill keep an eye on this when wifi calling is on to see if my issue is still there.

It might be the Market app. I get perfect Wifi unless I open up market app or any app that access the market.
I just turn wifi off and on again. Fixes it. Not that we should have to.

For the life of me, I can't get MyAccount.apk to stop running. Its frozen with TB, and I moved it out of /system/app folder.
Its always in the foreground in SystemPanel...

just delete the apk all together and reboot...
bloat freezer app's default will freeze an app more completely than titanium backup will. it also has the partial freeze option like titanium does as well. after freezing with bloat freezer it disappeared from even titanium backup seeing it.

Ok I've had wifi calling enabled all day and sure enough 2G came up and took over data service for no apparent reason, I wasn't in the market app or myaccount. I was simply texting when I noticed it, I ran speedtest again and verified 2G was the active service even though I had wifi on
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I also might add that I have SwitchPro on and when I have wifi enabled the data connection is shown to be disabled (tells me it gets disabled when wifi is active) but I still had the cell data icon on and overridding my wifi. So obviously disabling my data through a widget doesn't solve my issue.
I noticed something with the G2X the other day that I never noticed with any other phone I had before, althought this is my first android. But I've noticed that if I have Wifi on with a weak connection with 4G (1 bar), it will not switch to the stronger Wifi signal for data, but rather keep trying to do things over the radio. Has anyone else seen/noticed this, and any idea how to make it hand off to the stronger connection?
I believe the my account app or something like that only works with phone data and not with wifi. Do a search it was posted somewhere in here about it. To figure it out further I would kill all running process you don't need under settings/application. Then try connecting wifi. I find myself running into a few bumps with wifi calling. Please could you provide more info like what version of android/ or rom. And any apps you may have? I have some ideas but could use more info to help trouble shoot.

Good point - more information is better . I'm using stock froyo, rooted with things like my account and I have the My Account and other similar things frozen.
This issue is something I noticed in my house. For example, if I go into the bathroom, I'll watch my bars drop to 1. So I then turn on Wifi, and it connects to Wifi, but then if I load up the browser to access the web, or market, etc. It'll still be using the radio instead of detecting the stronger signal and switching to that. So that's the biggest issue now. It's just weird it doesn't sense the stronger connection is there and go.
Try this. Stand near the wireless router and connect to you wifi...does it connect every thing correctly? ( ie wifi radio wifi calling if you use it and does the cellular bar shade out? If it all cconects correctly was away from the router towards your dead zone. As you walk slowly watch and see what your radio's do. This to see signal strength. I am sure they have an app that can show signal strength. I say we try this first to see if we can get it to connection properly. If your unable to connect properly I would try fixing permissions and possible dalvic wipe. I will be honest I am not an android guru like some but want to learn. I was a windows mobile user till a few months back. I will help you the best I can.

I've tried tethering using foxfi (never works no matter which rom I'm on), android wifi tether (SSID doesn't show up 90% of the time), mobile hotspot (data connection drops out randomly), and native tethering in CM10 and I've always had problems.
I never had any issues on my past phones (Droid1, DroidX, Thunderbolt, Nexus, Rezound). Does anyone know why tethering is so buggy on this phone? Anyone have suggestions on which tethering app to use? The only way I can get the SSID to show up in android wifi tether is if I reboot the phone. I've tried all of these tethering apps/methods on beans, synergy, and CM10
My settings for android wifi tether are:
Device profile: Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE
Routing fix enabled
I've also tried
Device profile: Generic ICS
Routing fix enabled
Thanks
Foxfi works for me but for some reason I have to wait around 2-5 minutes for it to work

I don't use it a lot as I don't want to take too many chances with losing my unlimited data from a VZ TOS violation, but when I do use it it seems to work just fine.
I used it last night for a while at a meeting where somebody else needed an internet connection & it worked just fine.

Are you using a custom Rom? Could that affect it at all?
WiFi tether for SynergyRom is pretty buggy (wasn't working for me at least). But FoxFi was working fine when I tried it. Although like a previous post, it would take 2-5 minutes for it to actually start working :/

Thanks for the info on foxfi. I'll try using it again. I hope they can fix android Wifi tether soon as I use it every day: (
I have the exact same issues with Wifi Tether app. SSID likely to not appear but a reboot fixes it.
root6 ROM, same behavior stock versus having frozen a bunch of stuff. For quite a while I thought I had frozen something that made it work but after some tinkering I finally flashed back to stock and discovered that it's just unreliable. The only reliable answer for me is to reboot immediately prior to firing up the app.
I have found that my laptop causes a connection delay sometimes... it is that stupid windows "identifying network" thing and it will prevent internet connectivity until it finishes. I have not seen the missing SSID at all and I have used both FoxFi and the stock stuff. I use it quite a bit (at least 2 hours per day, sometimes as much as 9) so I have a pretty good amount of time with it. I disconnect and reconnect at least twice during that in a typical day as well (out of range, or just not using the machine so i put it in hibernation).
I am on Root66 and have nothing frozen.
I have no issues using Wifi Tether on my stock rooted ROM. Here are my settings:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS
Setup Method: Auto
Wifi Encryption: Enabled
Channel: 01
WiFi-driver reload: checked
MSS clamping: unchecked
Routing fix: unchecked
DNS: 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (personal preference)
Disable Wake-Lock: Checked
Im using Foxfi....Works ok. I sometimes have to disconnect and reconnect because it seems to become inactivate. But its doing the trick till I get my home internet back up.
I too have the same issues as op. All of them are very inconsistent, its extremely annoying!
I am using a stock ROM. I use foxfi daily and have not had any problems or delays when using it. I have not changed any settings in the application itself other than changing the ssid. It only takes the 5-10 seconds to stop or start the tethering.
However WiFi tether on the S3 never worked for me.

First off the wifi tether works great, have it connected to my laptop now writing this.
the issue is even though the laptop is connected to the phone, the phone is not reading that it has a user connected and therefore shuts off the connection after 5 minutes due to "no activity"
I am on stock wwe not even rooted
any ideas to cure the issue
any more information needed just ask
thanks
Then it has most likely something to do with you laptop. Have you tried other other forms of security? WPA,WEP, none at all.
Laptop is brand new on a fresh install, I'm using the standard security

This issue is not just tethering related. I also had the same issue where I was talking on Skype and WiFi/4g disconnected thinking that network was not being used. This is very annoying since I can't use Skype to make calls.
I really don't understand why OEMs bypass android core settings and do their own implementation. This is confusing like hell and is just making the fragmentation issue much worse. For ex in this case, instead of putting their own logic of disconnecting while sleeping to save battery, they should have let users decide via already existing setting for WiFi sleep policy.

Yea my phone is always on charge while tethering so it's annoying especially when tethering is my only way to access the net.

Maybe you guys can help me understand a similar problem I'm having--
I can use Skype on my tethered PC for about 20 minutes before it suddenly cuts out, and in fact my entire mobile data connection shuts down. If I reset the phone, internet (and Skype) comes back, but now only for a few minutes before it is shut down again.
If I don't use Skype, I can use the internet all day long with no disconnects...
Verizon --> Droid Charge --> PDAnet --> USB --> Win7 desktop --> Skype
Anyone else with WiFi issues? 90% of the time I have no problems but 10% of the time it seems the connection hangs. Data transfer will pause and resume 30 secs or a minute later. I have tested this with speed test and was able to reproduce. Happens on both my 2ghz and 5ghz networks. I am rooted but I'm going to do a factory reset to see if issue persists. I do know it's not my WiFi as my other devices have no trouble. But this is quite annoying.

Are you by chance using an Apple router or access point? For some reason, they don't seem to play well with Android devices, including my M8. I've had a similar experience with 4 Android devices and 2 different Apple routers. The devices continuously disconnect and reconnect.
No I'm using an Asus ac66. The funny thing is the connection doesn't drop. It always says connected. The data just stops flowing and then starts again. For example I'll run a speed test and the download will pause then start up again. Very odd. Never had a phone do this before

I've got an Apple Airport Extreme. I also have several Android devices. Have had many that I no long have or use. I've never had any problem with my wifi on any of them. I have to wonder if your problem isn't related to something else. Or, possibly your router needs to be replaced. Might be a matter of settings too. But, like I said, I've never had any problems with mine.
Within the "Advanced Wi-Fi" settings there is an auto-enabled option called "Wi-Fi Optimization" which minimizes battery usage when Wi-Fi is on. I assume this monitors for extended periods of inactivity (screen off, no active downloads, etc.) and temporarily disables/hibernates Wi-Fi activity.
I've kept this option enabled and haven't had any issues so far, but maybe you could try testing with/without this setting enabled? Another thing to try would be checking highly-used radio channels in your area with an application like InSSIDer and making sure your router is broadcasting on a low-use channel. I see no correlation with the radio channel and your new M8, but it's worth a try

I have the same issues. and ive turned off wifi optimizaiton, ive set my wifi control frequency to 149, ive tried to switch between 2.4 and 5ghz. i feel like my issue is with the phone not picking up the wifi signals very well... we live in a brick house, and the asus ac68u sits right in the middle of th house, and my room is only right around the corner. everyone elses phone picks up 5ghz or 2.4ghz frequency fine in my room, even my gf's M8 (we bought ours from verizon same time for the deal). i literally get wifi in my rom 10% of the time or its choppy and slow. so everytime im in my room i have to switch to cellular :|
