[Q] thunderbolt tethering - Thunderbolt General

Really torn between getting a thunderbolt or a charge. I'm leaning towards thunderbolt because I like to use custom roms and the support seems better for that. I saw a review that said tethering on the thunderbolt can be problematic. have other people seen that? If so does it go away if you change to a custom rom or is it a hardware issue?

I had major problems with dropping 4g with the stock tether but after switching to one of the wireless tether apps for root users I have no more issues at all on my thunderbolt.

good to know. the only thing that's holding me back right now is the battery life. I could live with a screen that's not as vibrant. I have the incredible right now, and have never made it through a day without plugging it in or swapping batteries. It's more or less broken for me now (you can see my other posts if you're curious), and I suspect all the battery swapping was a large factor in the issues I'm seeing now. I'm worried if I get the thunderbolt I'll end up with similar problems.

Tethering on the tbolt is seamless and easy. I use the stock app, or Barnacle. Both work like a charm.
Beware, using wifi tether with the stock app over 4g will drain your battery so fast that even if you have it plugged into your pc the battery still goes down. you have to plug it into the wall.
ive noticed that the barnacle app uses less power than the stock app uses.

oh dude, i thought i was the only one. it's really pissing me off and i cant find a solution. i did try the wilress tether app. but same thing keeps happening.
which rom are you using/kernel/radio and which version of that wireless app are you using? i'm on synergy senless 3.0 (nightly) with the ziggy kernel and mr2 radio.

fwiw, I went with the thunderbolt. I guess verizon is worried about ppl getting out of their contracts or something, cause they gave me the upgrade price eventhough it's early for me. I bet if I tried I could have even gotten a better deal, but I'm just too lazy and impatient.

When you guys say it's "dropping 4G" do you mean it drops down to 3G or it stays on 4G but loses connectivity?

Had the tbolt first. Reboot issuers and vzw sent me a charge to use till reboot issues fixed. Long story short. The charge was used 48 hire and sent back. Feels cheap. Os is slower. Battery life was about same for charge as with tbolt

does not get to 3g. 4g icon disappears and reappears three seconds later. but when it appears tether does not want to work. when you try to refresh website on the computer, the 4g disappears. if you take a speedtest on the phone app, it works flawlessly. at the same time as the app runs you use the computer,4g magically disappaears.

That hasn't been the case for me, I"ll often leave the hotspot on all day at work with pandora going and it's always fully charged off of the PC usb port.

I'm using BAMF 2.1 remix and imos 3.4.0 kernel, wireless tether version 2.0.7 it works great other than it has to be plugged in or the data freezes til I wake the screen up.

No it would lose all data completely and a soon as turned the tether of it would pop right back up.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

well i solved all of my tethering problems by going back to froyo. am now on bamf 1.8 remix and loving it. tether works like it should and even works with the screen off. something is off inthe gb kernal that forces tether to close when screen is off. slight remedy is to up the processor speed, until you lose the 4g signal lol.
i think i'll just wait for the official gb, need the internet and all.

This used to happen with me where my 4g would disconnect while using the Wireless tether app.
Im on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC3. and I downloaded the wireless tether app, but the only the stable version worked for me, I had bamf remix before the sense and the newest version worked for me, but when i installed it on my bamf sense version, it wouldnt work, so I had to use the regular stable version not the experimental

[Q] Battery consumption 4G vs WIFI

I absolutely love this new Galaxy S 4G but the battery usage is outrages. When at home I usually have it on WIFI since I read in a few other places that WIFI uses less battery than 4G but I'm starting to doubt that. My phone at 100% with wifi running is drained down to 60% by morning just sitting there on standby.
I have removed all bloatware and any app that uses background data beside Gmail, and collaborated the battery couple of times just to be sure.
In the next few days I'm going to test the phone in wifi vs 4g to see how they compare in battery consumption. Any input from anyone who has already done this is appreciated. I like to know what others have experienced...
Try the Bali kernel by drhonk I've seen at least a 30% increase in battery life. I don't use wifi though. Use to get between 5 and 7 hours of constant use now its at least 9 to 10 now. Moderate use has gotten me a little over 24 hours.

Wifi Calling is known issue with Bali and has been confirmed. Calls route to the back speaker. I did use 1.4u.
One thing that I'm noticing is the constant wifi scanning for APs, even after the phone is connected. This helps draining the battery I believe. I found that on most Android phones the wifi scanning interval can be changed by modifying wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=xx in build.prop. This didn't work in Galaxy S 4G.
Autokiller from app market had am advanced wifi tweak that may work
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Thanks I'll check it out again. I looked on the market before and couldn't find anything that could successfully change or stop the scanning interval on this phone.
I ended up using Wifi Timeout to shut the Wifi when phone screen is turned off and put the phone on GSM only. That has made a huge difference.
I use wifi calling all the time with bali and have no problems

You must be real lucky then, check the Bali thread and you'll find tons of people having issues with it. Sound gets channeled out of the back speaker instead of the earpiece...
My wifi calling works perfect too. I just used it a couple hours ago actually.

[Q] Who has NEVER had a reboot?

Folks -
Obviously the Tbolt reboot issue is real. However, I have never had one. Ever. Not One. I've run a variety of ROMs and Radios, though I've mostly used a BAMF variant with an adrynalyne kernel. Currently on BAMF 1.7, 4.4.7 kernel, not overclocked, with the 605.7 radios (both CDMA and LTE). I am in an almost total 4G area...I live in central NJ, and commute to Princeton, NJ, spending only about 20 minutes in a 3G area in between. I also go out to SF quite a bit, which is obviously blanketed in 4G.
So my question: What's driving the reboots? Is this a matter of the Tbolt not playing well with some 3G hardware in the towers (or vice versa)?
If you've never had a reboot, please post and let us know how your tbolt is configured, and where you tend to use it.
I'm stock since mine broke and I get no more 3G anywhere. However running stock before root never had a reboot, running rooted with BAMF Froyo never had a reboot. Running GB I did have reboots few and far between. Most of them because the kernel was overclocked. As long as I installed a kernel and ran it 245 min to 1024 max it never had an issue. Once I tried to overclock then it would happen. The phone is fine for me no overclocked so no reboots!
My only reboots were due to a kernel issue, not the actual phone. So no, I have not had one.

I'm running das bamf 2.0 and applied all the patches and the sense 3.0 camera. Never a reboot, only issue is in the camera. When I use action setting I get a force close. That's it.

I've had 3 Thunderbolts.
The first was great until the screen turned Green, No random reboots as well. The second was great until it started rebooting 2 times an hour (rooted, Das BAMF), and when i returned it to Stock it would reboot about 3 times a day. My third (a crappy 'like new' replacement), reboots at least once an hour.... Completely stock.
My 4th arrives today! I hope this one works, but i'm honestly not holding my breath.

Thanks, keep us informed. 4G is the big battery kill, I find using wifi whenever possible has transformed my battery life.
I got my replacement phone last friday. it came with the launch day firmware. I updated to MR1 on Saturday, since then I have been having 1-2 reboots every day. Going to call them and see about getting another phone, maybe a Droid Charge or LG revolution.
I've had my phone for a couple months now. Rooted the night I received and been on Bamf remix since day one and continued updating the Roms as they were released but stayed away from GB. I'be had zero.reboot. I'm located in Utah with a 3g only area without ever being in 4g.
I wanted to note that some people may not be noticing reboots depending on what time of day they happen. I've had at least 1 happen over night that I know of. The only reason I know now is that I just started using a SIM password and woke up to the phone asking me to enter the PIN.
I'm running Das Bamf 1.63 w/ leanKernel 2.5.1 in a 3g area.
Mine had it's first reboot today after being up for 90 hours so I really can't say that it is the same thing. I am running in 4g, 3g and wifi at different parts of the day. I run the 3rd radio combo on the radio thread

New radio = hot phone

no but im not a fan of this new radio.
I agree the radio is great. Just im cooking eggs with my tb.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
i have been experiencing the same thing... big time !
regardless of what rom i use, sense/de-sense or aosp, the phone gets really hot after awhile. i've had a few instances where it got so hot that it froze the phone and i had to yank the battery and let it cool down.
for the hell of it, tried going back to an older radio and the problem went away.
damn.. did have a tad bit better battery on the new radio as well as a very slight improvement in reception... but considering the consequences of the new radio, it's better just to stick to an older one for now.
Was this only happening when using a 3G/4G connection or all the time? I haven't experienced that but I only switched to the new radio a few days ago and haven't done any long term mobile data usage with it yet. I do seem to pick up 4G at my work quicker and in places in the building where I couldn't before.

I know i read if you undervolt it too much it can cause a phone to run hot if done incorrectly. Causes phone to work harder since it needs more power.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Refering to a couple of the posts above, i am in a 3G only area but i do heavy usage(web, movies) so the phone will be on for a few hours at a time.
As for "undervolting", i use DreamKernal + SetCPU and just overclock to like 1222. I also have a profile set so when the screen is off it is set to max out at 368.
Oh, and for the heck of it tried that VZW thing with pulling the battery to reset location and.it didnt help with the heat either.
On a positive note, at least if your hands are cold(or other body part), then hey!
i think the kernels have alot to do with the heat as well. i doubt the leaked 802 radio will harm anyone's phone. i will admit its a very wonky radio for me. ive just recently combined the cdma 627 radio and the lte 802 radio and all is well. i went 23hrs on a stock battery with lte on all the time. im running cm7+kangbang kernel.

[Q] Fixing the Droid Charge Mobile Network problem

I've tried several different ROMs, as well as several different battery saving apps, but I keep running into the same problem with my Droid Charge - after a certain amount of time with the mobile network off, it will not turn back on without either a restart or a toggle of airplane mode. There has to be a bug in the software design, as the same issue occurs with Greenpower, Juice Defender, 2x, and Tasker. I've been on stock, Humble ROM, and am currently on Eclipse, but none of these ROMs have fixed this issue.
Are there any developers out there who can fix this issue? I get almost 20 hours of battery life when I use Juice Defender (compared to about 7 hrs without it), but I can't keep restarting my phone and toggling airplane mode in the middle of the day.
Any suggestions or fixes? I know that many are experiencing the same issue, but it never seems to get addressed.
You're more likely to get an answer to your question if you post it in the correct section -- development is for releases and tutorials; Q&A goes in General (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074281).
From what I have read, you cant really use Juice Defender or other similar apps with the charge. For some reason, when those apps turn off the radio, it won't always come back on. Sometimes a reboot fixes it and sometimes not.
This is a radio issue so I don't think a rom can fix it. I tried Juice with EE4 and it worked if you did not disable the radio but battery savings is almost non-existent. I have not tried it on EP1Q though. I am lucky to get 10 hrs on my battery.

I've had good results running Juice Defender with 3G where the radio comes back pretty much all the time. 4G doesn't fair nearly as well, not coming back about 30% of the time.
I tend to use 3G most of the time, only switching to 4G when I need the insane speed (tethering or Netflix watching). The battery life is much better.

Which radio are you using? EE4? or EP1Q?
As far as EE4 goes, I also agree that JuiceDefender is too inconsistent to run since the data always drops out. However, when I ran the full EP1F/EP1H (I forgot which one I flashed to) GB leak awhile back just to try out, JD was actually working quite well to at least a 90% consistency in restoring data after unsleeping my phone. Unfortunately with all the other bugs going on with the GB leaks I reflashed back to EE4, and now I've flashed to the EP1Q modem only. I've yet to try JD with the EP1Q modem, but I'll give it a try later today.

Scroll down a bit on his twitter feed and you'll find it. Be sure you download the correct 0.13.3 version since 0.13.5 is unstable and will cause bootloops on your phone.
The only instance I've run into issues so far with is music streaming. It seems my GMusic and Pandora will randomly have popping sounds while streaming music. It's nothing too major for me but just in case anyone was wondering why they could be getting it.

Exactly, it's good for the fact that this lousy g2x can't keep a signal where I live, even though my old phone could. I have unlimited talk anyway, as you say, but that's no good if I drop calls all the time.
I had the MT4G before this G2x. And MIUI on that was 100% stable and was absolutely fast and bug free. So that phone kinda set the bar high for me when it came to MIUI.
Now MIUI on the G2x is good, but not nearly as good as what I'm used to so I stick to CM7. For my experience, MIUI for G2x slows down and has random annoying bugs here and there. But it's still a daily driver. Just not as fast nor good as MIUI has been for other phones like the MT4G.
Hope that helped.

-even select the custom ringtones, it still rings default ringtone.
-won't let me change the theme even though it said its changed...

Yeah, I had those problems as well... Not to mention Wifi calling not actually working either. The ringtone issue bugged me quite a bit.
Reboots seem to be a hardware issue on the g2x I'm beginning to believe. My phone does not do it near as often as many, but then again, I didn't buy mine till the end of October, so it was preloaded with GB and the new baseband.
sorry I meant 1.11.18...I never really had faith in LG but it seems to be the best phone I could find in Tmobile at the time so I had no choice....
No issues at all with miui here. Loved it on my previous phone and I now use Whitehawkz miui combined with faux kernel on my optimus and it works flawlessly.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I have the latest version of Whitehakx MIUI and I love so much about it but cant get a couple things to work and will probably switch to a stock based ROM because of it. my issues with MIUI are
1. Internal storage is unavailable to most apps except for camera and market. for instance I can NOT download any files to the internal storage and many apps say the SD is not in a mounted state. I do NOT use and external SD card.
2. GPS is not great, it's manageable...but only accurate to about 40 meters and thats after messing with GPS Test before using google maps.
If anyone has some insight on these two issues I'd be willing to pay via paypal if it leads to a fix. Also might be helpful to know I'm not on T-mobile, but Cincinnati bell. Thanks
MiUi + Morfics t15 = fast as hell. But you may experience some overheating.
MiUi + Faux v0.4.5 CM = reliable performance with awesome speed
Cm7 + Morfics t15 = Not so stable, but fast as hell.
Cm7 + Faux v04.5 CM = Awesome battery life with awesome fast and reliable performance.
These are experiences with these roms and kernels. Results may vary thought depending on your phone. Not all phones are created equal.

Are you able to get 4g with your carrier? I'm asking because Google Maps uses your data connection as well to establish your location. Have you tried using a different navigation app that doesn't use data? Like NAVIGON perhaps...
I really appreciate your advice on ROMs. I might try CM7, are there multiple versions of that ROM?
I do have 4G with Cincinnati Bell so I dont think thats the issue, but I also haven't tried NAVIGON to see how that responds.

I personally loved MIUI. i used the galnet miui 1.11.9 for about 3 weeks and it was really sweet. Lag is minimal, speed is good as well. One thing that i didnt like was that the battery ran out a bit faster than when i was on CM7. I am back on CM7 now mainly because i forgot to backup MIUI when trying a new rom.
Overall, it is a great rom and i prefer flashing it, just remember to backup your current rom before.
