[Q] mycloud remote desktop

Hey guys,
I'm considering getting a transformer and I'm really interested in the remote desktop feature of the myCloud app that is included. It isn't specified, but I kind of get the impression that you can only access computers on the same network. Is this true? If it is, it kind of makes the feature a little bit useless.. If I'm on the same network, I'm obviously close to the computer so I could just walk over there and use the computer rather than trying to control it through my tablet. If I could use it anywhere though - at university, for example - this could be very useful. Have any of you guys tried this out yet?
It's also too bad that it doesn't work with linux.. but oh well. I can always use ssh for that, I guess. Sometimes having an actual GUI is kind of nice though.

Do I need to install any software on the remote machine for this to work?
Or it works just like the mstsc.exe program in window?

I haven't used it since I don't have a transformer(yet anyway), but I believe that there is some software you need to install on the pc first. The myCloud app should come pre-installed on the transformer though.

It's Splashtop, which IMO is the best (local?) remote desktop software. It's very fast, like very very fast, and it transmits sound. I use it on my iPhone to listen to driver radios during NASCAR races. If you want something that works no matter where you are, buy LogMeIn.

Because they got a license with Splashtop. Splashtop costs money normally, but they are including it free.
Who knows, or cares why. It's an awesome piece of software.

From the demo video, it is very fast. Unfortunately, I don't think I can use it to connect to my work PC.
What I usually do with my Windows 7 laptop
1. VPN to my company network
2. Remote desktop to my work PC using mstsc.exe
3. Do my work from there.
Is there a way to do this using a Honeycomb tablet without having to install any third party software on my work PC?

No, not with the app ASUS includes. You have to install the splashtop software and you have to be on a local network.

Well there are remote apps in the android market place - I don't know what mstsc is, but some of them work with the standard windows 7 remote desktop protocol, ie you don't need to install anything on the pc

Do you remember the name of that app? I hope it works with Win XP also (we still have XP at work).
I will to wait until I get my hands on the Transformer to try this out.

I use RemoteRDP on my Droid Incredible to connect to Windows via Remote Desktop. (RDP = remote desktop protocol) Also, mstsc.exe is the executable in Windows for remote desktop.
RemoteRDP has a free version that only allows you to connect to one computer. I bought the full version to connect to multiple computers. Setup a little port forwarding on your home router, and you're good to go!
..I'm still hoping the mynet software including the Asus splashtop will have some middle-hosting capability similar to gotomypc or logmein.com so it won't be LAN only... but I have no data to base that on, just a hope and guess!

I'm 98% sure it does not. It's just a renamed version of Splashtop.

Confirmation for you all that the newest update adds Splashtop for free. Other updates/faults I've listed HERE if you are interested.

Well dont know you got your TF, but I got my TF on launch date and I had to do an update for mycloud app to show up on my tablet.

If it was not included just flash the latest firmware on the Asus site.

I didn't think I'd get so much use out of it, since I usually only remote into my home systems when I'm away from home. However, I've actually found myself using it to watch cable in the bedroom when my wife is watching something else on the actual TV. I start Windows Media Center on my desktop that has a tuner, and am simply amazed at how well it performs. Video is as high-quality as if I was watching it on the desktop.
Also, note that Asus has stated that a version will be coming this summer that supports access from remote networks. I doubt that it will perform as well as it does locally, but if they can get even close to the same performance it will be a great solution.
This is another of those little surprises that have me loving the TF so much. Asus has put a lot of work into making a truly useful machine, in my opinion.

You need to go to asus website and manually download the new firmware for your region. Then you'll get myCloud.

[Q] Splash Remote Desktop help

Ive installed the manual ASUS update and this has now given me the MyCloud stuff.
I have 2 PCs i want to be able to access. I have downloaded the client App from www.splashtopremote.com and installed it.
One PC is now found but it shows on a horrible resolution and i can only see about a quarter of the screen. The other desktop it cant even find ???
Should I have installed specific ASUS client software ? i couldnt find any ....
oh... for info the one it cant find is Win 7 64 bit if that makes a difference ?

If both pc's are on the same network open up the Splashtop remote streamer on your pc and check under Network and make sure they are set to different port numbers from eachother.
There is a resolution setting in the Splashtop client. By default I beliefve it was 1024x768 you can change it to 1280x800. Also at default it's slightly zoomed out so that's why it looks blurry.

I'm pretty sure that's just how it works and while seeing my 1920x1200 monitor shrink down to 1200x800 made me a little sad, it's really supposed to be about what's on the transformer screen, not your monitor.

You shouldn't need different port numbers on physically different machines.

If he plans to setup port forwarding later for wan access it's easier since not all routers support port translation. But you're right he should be able to manually add the second machine even with the same port.

i tried changing the ports on one.
i tried manually setting up the connection in the setup.
still saying 'could not reach'
....and the resolution is awful. not even close. showing the top left quarter of the expected screen only. i cant find anywhere to change the resolution ???
where should i have got the desktop client from ?

.....plus my 'touch' is way off .... eg in drop downs i have to press about 5 items higher than the one i need.

Am on a mac, it works but only lets me use the 1024x768 setting and not the native 1280x800

In MyCloud settings hit the pencil to the right of your computer and change the setting to 1200x800. Then connect and your monitor should switch to 1200x800 which is meh looking, but the way it looks on your transformer is all that really mattered to the developers of Splashtop IMO. Kinda makes sense

OK so i now have more of my desktop showing but i still cant see the windows bar (at the bottom) and my finger press i a long way away from where i want to press.
The PC im trying to control is outputting via HDMI to an HD TV if that would make any difference ??
....and it still wont fing the other PC

Not related to splashtop but are you able to use computer one and use remote desktop to connect to computer two?

Make sure the other machine's firewall isn't blocking Splashtop from being seen on the network. That's quite likely to be your issue.

Just got my Transformer but can't find MyCloud and there is no update ...
so i went to the asus support website and try to install the update manually....
but nothing comes out and still don't know what to do......
i guess i installed the wrong update?? did you install it from their support website? i don't really know how to do that actually

Anybody know if there's a way to update the bundled apps? For example, Splashtop Remote is quite a long way out of date -- the included version from Asus is v1.0.0.5 r5324, but v1.1.5.2 came out on April 12th, 11 days before the build date of the latest Transformer release, and there was another release in between, so the version we've got is around two months out of date.
Of course, since we didn't install ourselves through Market, there's no way to update there. I can't find a way to update in the app itself. I've not checked the other bundled apps, but it seems likely they're not all on the current versions either.
To me, this is a big issue (and an argument against bundling software in the first place, unless we can upgrade ourselves). For example the latest Splashtop release is said to fix bugs, and the 1.1.4.1 release in between times had an even longer list of changes (although some seem to be in our 1.0.0.5 build, curiously.)
Edit: I've gone ahead and asked the question of Splashtop directly, too.

We probably are only licensed for whatever version Asus gives us. Plus the market version doesnt' let you go above 1024x768 where the one on the Transformer does 1280x800

I'm hoping that's not the answer, because if it is, it's a strong argument against pre-installing third party apps in the first place. I don't want buggy software on my tablet, and have concerns about potential security risks in not being able to control software myself, as well. If this *is* the answer, it'd be nice if Asus would consider releasing another version of the rom image with all the third-party stuff removed, and let users switch back and forth between the two rom types as they want.
Interesting catch that the Asus version supports resolutions that the retail one doesn't. I see a bunch of people asking for that in Splashtop's forums, wonder why on earth they haven't publicly released it if it was possible in software as long ago as 1.0.0.5? (And it's also possible in iOS versions).

Hadn't tried it, as I was scared I'd pay for it and then find out it conflicted. It was going to be my next question if they said there's no way to update. ;-)

I am considering to buy myself the transformer with the dock and I was wondering, if it would then work as a "real" netbook if I use it in connection with Splashtop? Therefore I have some questions:
* Will all kinds of software (Microsoft Office, Eclipse IDE, etc.) work?
* Are the keyboard and the touchpad fully compatible? Or will I have to use some kind of virtual keyboard although the dock is plugged in?
* How will this affect the battery life?
* Will there be any interferences with surfing the web?

I had the same thought but I just went and did it.
Even though the asus transformer has an app that is a clone of Microsoft office (Polaris Office) Microsoft office will work.
The keyboard works fine with me. All that the keyboard does is replace the onscreen one, so it has to work.
It will have the same battery life as you would normally have while Wifi is turned on.
I personally noticed that it was a little laggy, but I have really bad internet.

What's about the touchpad? Does is also work completely right? It think I read somewhere that using the right-click button causes Splashtop to terminate?

How fast is/was your internet connection? How fast should it be?

I really think that Asus TF together with its Dock are a great team, but I am afraid that it won't fulfill my expectations. Of course, I could buy me a netbook, but I also would like to have the ability to play around with a touch-screen
So honestly, how long have you had the TF (and how long have you used Splashtop) and do you think it is a "good" combination of a netbook and a tablet?

Right click will quit splashtop (it is back) but holding down left simulates right click. On my lan splashtop is almost like running windows locally. Over the net it is as good for most things as any other remote solution but somehow manages to stream video better than any others.

I have to ask this question, but you are aware that Splashtop is a remote desktop solution, and that in order for it to work you must have a PC or a Mac running somewhere on your network (or accessible from the internet), and it is this machine that actually runs your software?
The reason I ask is because you're asking if specific software works with Splashtop - in essence, the software on your "server" machine is immaterial to Splashtop because Splashtop is just a remote desktop.

I fully understand that the software has to run on a normal OS and the "output" will be streamed to the TF. The thing is though, I am not sure if the 10 inch display can resize the images so far, that the software can be used productively.
So my question is how good can the display handle "intensive" applications which have a lot of screen elements. Is the small display able to scale it down properly?

When you run splashtop from the transformer, it automatically changes the screen resolution on the host computer to a size that will fit on the transformer screen perfectly (At least in my experience). Once you disconnect your computers screen resolution goes back to what it was set as.
You can choose the following screen resolutions:
800x600
1024x768
1280x720
Best fit to transformer
Native resolution(whatever you currently have set on your windows or mac comptuer)

In practice your primary concern should be the tablet -> mouse situation and having enough bandwidth for what you're doing.
The regular version that is bundled will also tend to disconnect when you go back or to another application, I assume so does the HD.

One other thing to note is that when you are using the trackpad on the dock, you get the android mouse plus you get the mouse on the computers desktop. The mouse of the computers desktop follows the android mouse around, with a little bit of lag (if you aren't on the same network).
As mentioned above, the right click button on the dock still does act as the back button, exiting the application. Tapping and holding is the way to make a right-click action happen on the host computer.

If standard RDP is an option (if you have a VPN or something), the 2X RDP app works wonderfully with the transformer keyboard dock and trackpad. It actually allows you to use the right-click liek you normally would - it's JUST like sitting in front of a PC....
Like I said though, this is just plain RDP - will not work via the internet without a VPN.... ALso, not good for things like video, etc.....

[Q] Tun.ko question

Running a TF101 with kernel 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1 and Android 4.0.3. I recently installed Droid VPN and got it to connect just fine. Worked like a champ to use my netflix app from Kuwait. Before I would get the error "Not allowed in your country" now it loads just fine. Minus the fact its slow as ****. But that's another story. My question is, after installation of Droid VPN I cannot get my Splashtop HD to work like it use to. It would stream my desktop in real time to my Asus Transformer. Now it seems that it has about a 30 second delay and its only like one or two frames then off for another 30 seconds. Would the installation of Droid VPN have caused this? Also, I cannot find the Tun.ko file in my /lib/modules/ anywhere or even in the /lib/. Do i need to get one? Or does the transformer support it natively?
EDIT: Ok, after an hour of reading, its supported natively in ICS. So since it is supported, I have no need for a Tun.ko file. What could have caused my Splashtop HD issue?
What I have done to troubleshoot:
Turned off QOS on the router
Uninstalled Droid VPN from the Transformer
Rebooted Device

The Droid VPN may have changed some network settings splashtop needs to function properly, it is a rather unique remote desktop app, not 100% sure though, if uninstalling it worked then great!
As to the above, splashtop is the best in my opinion, it has an amazing framerate, if you can get past some of the annoying bugs. Look it up xD

Its by far the fastest remote desktop app without sacrificing quality.
For example watching a 1080p video running on your PC through splashtop is no problem, it displays in perfect sync without any stutter.
Gaming is no problem either, except you cant play in full-screen. You have to set the game to window mode.
I do, however, miss a pinch-to-zoom feature. Running a windows desktop on a 10" screen makes it a little hard to click on small areas (If you use the touchscreen, obviously).
Do note, however, that your PC needs to be quite powerful for the best experience. Its quite CPU heavy. I got a Hexa-core though so Im good

The old asus mycloud version has pinch to zoom, and they're thinking about rereleasing it.. I actually use two splashtops, one for gaming and one for browsing and coding. The old mycloud version I use for browsing and coding as it supports holding down keys to send multiple keystrokes, and pinch-to-zoom. I use the newest one in the market for gaming as it FINALLY released mouse detection, so I can plug in a usb mouse or use the trackpad and it follows pretty reasonably, but they broke multiple keystrokes again so its annoying to type + impossible to play fps with.. still..
Also, 6 cores? What processor do you have to have 6, standard is 1 2 4 8 etc.. I'm guessing refurbed AMD or weird AMD?

Actually standard is 1 2 4 6 8 ...
Its an AMD Phenom X6 1100T running at 3.9Ghz/core.

[Q] Remote Desktop App for N8013

Is there anyone that has an N8013 that actually is using a RDP app; more specifically, SplashTop Remote Desktop HD or it's non HD (cheaper) version.

I have been using PocketCloud Pro. Similar to SplashTop. I do not recall the cost of it, however it has been working well for me. Prior to getting the SGN10.1 Wifi, I was using my Droid Razr Maxx in conjunction with the Motorola Lapdock 500 Pro. It has worked great there, as well. I take that with me when I do field audit work because it gives me a larger screen.
I would avoid using things such as LogMeIn (Ignition on the device side). Although I have it, I find it to be lousy with respect to screen resolution. Both SplashTop and PocketCloud seem to provide a more realistic terminal mode reproduction of the screen.
I just recently loaded SplashTop and haven't used it that much yet. The issue that I have with PocketCloud is that I do not believe there is a way to have access to more than one monitor. Ironically, that is not an issue with LogMeIn.

I've used both Logmein and VNC. I've found that more often as not, I go to VNC (free version).

i use TeamViewer for Remote Control, free on the app store.

I use Pocket Cloud when I am away from home and SplashTop when at home. I like SplashTop HD better but I already paid for Pocket Cloud ages ago. Pocket Cloud is a pay once and you're good to go. Last time I looked at SplashTop it was a subscription and I don't want a subscription service. Its free when your on your own network and I believe is easier to use.

I use jump desktop. It's the easiest and most functional one I have found. Plus it's free. I bought paid version to support development though.

I have both vnc and splashtop. I personally like the feel of the mouse control of vnc vs splashtop. Splashtop has two modes of mouse control, one of them like that of vnc but not as good. Vnc has a better look and feel, atleast for me.

Jump desktop has SPen support. It is the best. It also can tunnel vnc and had great RDP support. :thumbup:

I have two questions so far. The first has to do with my laptop/server. I have the laptop running with an extra monitor. When I connect to the computer through SGN10.1, it is showing me both monitors, side by side, and quite small. How to I adjust that so that only one shows up at a time, but allows me to go back and forth.

I use Splashtop Whiteboard. It's the same thing but with some annotation features added to it. Pretty slick to remote control a PC for a presentation. You can still use the old apps with the new desktop server software, there is just some additional configuration needed. This allows you to still use the model where you pay once for the app instead of ongoing subscription fees.
Regarding getting your router address working. There are a few companies that can update your dynamic IP address to a hostname. DynDNS used to do it for free. I think another one is no-ip.com that still has a free service.

Curious, what do you mean by "SPen support." I think every app allows the SPen to work like you are touching the screen (at least Splashtop Whiteboard does) but does this mean it has full support for the Spen as in touch sensitivity too?

I have a problem about pocketcloud with s-pen.
On remote desktop with pocketcloud When I approach s-pen to the screen a letter of "b" is typed. As much as I approach and pull back it types a new one.
(if word is open in word, if explorer is open in explorer. Which program is open.)
Anyone having the same issue?
