Hey,
I am considering to buy myself the transformer with the dock and I was wondering, if it would then work as a "real" netbook if I use it in connection with Splashtop? Therefore I have some questions:
* Will all kinds of software (Microsoft Office, Eclipse IDE, etc.) work?
* Are the keyboard and the touchpad fully compatible? Or will I have to use some kind of virtual keyboard although the dock is plugged in?
* How will this affect the battery life?
* Will there be any interferences with surfing the web?
Thank You very much so far!
I had the same thought but I just went and did it.
Even though the asus transformer has an app that is a clone of Microsoft office (Polaris Office) Microsoft office will work.
The keyboard works fine with me. All that the keyboard does is replace the onscreen one, so it has to work.
It will have the same battery life as you would normally have while Wifi is turned on.
I personally noticed that it was a little laggy, but I have really bad internet.
Good luck sir
Thanks for the reply!

What's about the touchpad? Does is also work completely right? It think I read somewhere that using the right-click button causes Splashtop to terminate?

How fast is/was your internet connection? How fast should it be?

I really think that Asus TF together with its Dock are a great team, but I am afraid that it won't fulfill my expectations. Of course, I could buy me a netbook, but I also would like to have the ability to play around with a touch-screen
So honestly, how long have you had the TF (and how long have you used Splashtop) and do you think it is a "good" combination of a netbook and a tablet?
Right click will quit splashtop (it is back) but holding down left simulates right click. On my lan splashtop is almost like running windows locally. Over the net it is as good for most things as any other remote solution but somehow manages to stream video better than any others.

I have to ask this question, but you are aware that Splashtop is a remote desktop solution, and that in order for it to work you must have a PC or a Mac running somewhere on your network (or accessible from the internet), and it is this machine that actually runs your software?
The reason I ask is because you're asking if specific software works with Splashtop - in essence, the software on your "server" machine is immaterial to Splashtop because Splashtop is just a remote desktop.
Regards,
Dave
Hey Dave!
I fully understand that the software has to run on a normal OS and the "output" will be streamed to the TF. The thing is though, I am not sure if the 10 inch display can resize the images so far, that the software can be used productively.
So my question is how good can the display handle "intensive" applications which have a lot of screen elements. Is the small display able to scale it down properly?
When you run splashtop from the transformer, it automatically changes the screen resolution on the host computer to a size that will fit on the transformer screen perfectly (At least in my experience). Once you disconnect your computers screen resolution goes back to what it was set as.
You can choose the following screen resolutions:
800x600
1024x768
1280x720
Best fit to transformer
Native resolution(whatever you currently have set on your windows or mac comptuer)
In practice your primary concern should be the tablet -> mouse situation and having enough bandwidth for what you're doing.
The regular version that is bundled will also tend to disconnect when you go back or to another application, I assume so does the HD.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
One other thing to note is that when you are using the trackpad on the dock, you get the android mouse plus you get the mouse on the computers desktop. The mouse of the computers desktop follows the android mouse around, with a little bit of lag (if you aren't on the same network).
As mentioned above, the right click button on the dock still does act as the back button, exiting the application. Tapping and holding is the way to make a right-click action happen on the host computer.
If standard RDP is an option (if you have a VPN or something), the 2X RDP app works wonderfully with the transformer keyboard dock and trackpad. It actually allows you to use the right-click liek you normally would - it's JUST like sitting in front of a PC....
Like I said though, this is just plain RDP - will not work via the internet without a VPN.... ALso, not good for things like video, etc.....

Hi,
I'm looking for an app that will allow regular work like:
- Right click
- F5 (or refresh)
- WinKey + R (run)
and etc...
I've tryed 2X and Remote RDP, but none of the support right clicking.
Can anyone suggest anything?
Thx!
SplashTop HD is by far the best RDP app I've used. Haven't used it with a mouse but it works very well with touchscreen (hold for right click).
A slightly older version is included in MyCloud which is already on the tablet, does everything the market app does but hasn't been updated to link you computer via e-mail address for auto lookup off the network.
I used to use Wyse PocketCloud but quickly replaced it when I tried Splashtop.
Yep, SplashTop HD is the best IMO
Splashtop is not really an RDP software.
You need to install a software on the computer that grabs what is on screen and sends that to the tablet.
I use remote rdp, which is real rdp client. Right click is done by clicking and holding. You can even set the screen size of the connection (i use 1280x750) which is perfect for the tablet.
* sigh * Splashtop is the best at what it does.

Ok you have a point there but unless your in a situation where you can't install the streamer on the computer (eg. Server at work ) Splahtop is the best option.
For accessing servers at work I have streamer on my work PC and RPD from there - maybe not as fast as connecting direct but keeps security guys happier
Try PocketCloud Pro
I'm using PocketCloud Pro:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wyse.pocketcloudfull&hl=en
It's a true RDP client, and should do everything you're looking for.
PocketCloud Pro, true RDP client, with all the features you asked. Also supports other remote access protocols.
Do any support remote desktop to a Linux box?
My favorite is X2.
But I just got my TF101.
I asked the support to implement right-click an F1F12-keys.
They answered they would discuss this in the next meetings.
This would be really great.
btw: There is an app with supports right-click.
I don't remember the name, but the non-trail-version costs about 17€ and has some disadvantages compared to X2.
I love X2 stays connected in the background.
It seems like most of the major the RDP have some form of "right click" functionality. The issue is you have to usually do some special screen press combo or use a context menu somewhere. This is fine for simple operations but is extremely annoying for trying to do serious work or gaming via RDP.
I'm hoping that either splashtop or PocketCloud will support right click via the touchpad's right click or even better via an external mouse that is plugged in or connected via bluetooth. I hear there is no API to support that at the moment and that is the reason no one implements such a thing.
I'd also really like to have secondary buttons on my mouse work (like depressing the scroll wheel etc...). My dream is to be able to use CAD software remotely or maybe even play a game of L4D. Right now it runs and works, just the mouse implementation prevents you from being efficient and is really frustrating to use.
Maybe when ice cream sanwich comes out, the mouse APIs will be included.

I've literally never had a dropped connection. I use PocketCloud all day for work on both windows and linux remote systems. Not saying I don't believe you, just saying I've had a different experience than you.
Pocketcloud is a bit pricey compare to other apps, but it's totally worth it if you use it for business. The on-screen mouse pointer control dial thingy is the best input method I've ever used on a tablet, You can click accurately on the smallest item and see the pointer the whole time, plus it gives you quick access to right-click, the windows key, etc.
Hm, it's really unlikely any app out there is going to support the right click on the transformer dock the way it's configured, but I really want this. Maybe there's a free RDP client out there ripe for modding this functionality in? I don't know how hard it would be.
Actually I use Xtralogic's Remote Desktop and it works PERFECTLY with the dock, including right-click support, and 'hot tracking' the mouse. The ONLY weird thing about it is that you have to double-click-drag, but it's a minor thing...
With Xtralogic's (kinda pricey) app, my TF101 is basically a netbook now, and I couldn't be happier.

Agree on the mouse pointer control dial. that thing is perfect.
Remote RDP should have right click, you may need to check settings? I emailed the guy when the TF first came out, he was able to do it really fast.
right click
First of all thx for sll your replyes, but like someone here said - using combinations is nice but its annoying.
I think that there should some kind of a tweak that you can install on the device that allows the use of right click button everywhere.
Wouldn'tit be nice to use right click features everywhere? Like special functions in the browsre and etc...
I'll be sure to try SplashTop...for now, TeamViewer is my nr. 1.
I feel this is unique enough to merit its own thread and I looked at the first 30 pages for anything similar and found nothing.
What do you think would make the dock more worth it? Not necessarily more of a netbook, because if you want a netbook then buy a netbook, but more along the lines of functionality that should be there or is already there but needs improving. This is not really a gripe session, more of a brainstorm and also helping to make suggestions to other people if a solution already exists/comes into existence. But do try to keep it reasonable; keep your expectations realistic of an Android-running device.
I'm mainly talking about Android, since as far as I know, no other OS is stable just yet, but hardware is also a determining factor. Also, since a lot of Android is the apps, I think it would be alright to list an app functionality that would be nice (i.e., a video player, an SSH client, etc.)
And hopefully it would be nice if we followed the format of
What: What it is
Why: Why you believe it is necessary.
I'll start with a few I've noticed (I run Prime 1.6 [I think] currently):
Keyboard should provide all basic functionality
I found it odd that there's a menu button, but no app-switcher key on the keyboard. I find it strange that that core piece of functionality still requires the use of the touch screen.
Word processor should focus on keyboard
Just a bunch of stupid things that make it incredibly annoying to use and would never fly in a desktop processor.
-Ctrl+S should save
-Shift should be able to select
-Bullet indenting is horrid; should use tab
Dock-friendly SSH client is desperately needed
(Hear me out. I don't expect a full IDE at all, but a simple SSH client really is not too much to ask. Again, it works perfectly, just not at all designed for the dock.)
ConnectBot is ok, but it just fails if you have a full keyboard and want to use it as a simple SSH client. Shift acts as capslock, there is no way to do many shortcuts such as Ctrl+O (save in GNU Nano), and many characters like * can't be typed directly into the console.
That's what I've noticed so far. Hopefully you guys will think this is a good idea and chip in your opinions.

I want to jump around in a document if possible.
I use the regular arrow keys way more than I do in Windows.
Also I'd like to see more Ctrl+combinations available.

Alt+Tab works as an app switcher in the newer firmwares. They also added Shift+Arrow Keys to highlight text easier. This pretty much made the keyboard usable for me.
The more Windows shortcuts they implement the happier I will be.
Required dock features:
What: Crap load more battery. 11000mAh minimum.
Why: Useful
What: Programmable Hot Keys, menu hooks for any application.
Why: Speed. Touch is faster than mouse, hot keys would be faster than menu.
What: Hardware NIC port
Why: Sometimes wired wins over wireless.
What: Screen Orientation Controls (options - see Orientation Control app)
Why: Dock screws with orientation. Unscrew it.
What: Barrel charging vs ASUS 40 pin cable nightmare
Why: Fu*k proprietary charging.
I could think of more, but this is a start.
I'd love it if ctrl-w or ctrl-t in the Browser didn't sometimes "double-tap" and close (or open) two tabs at once. Maybe they should fix the dock keyboard problems before adding any more shortcuts. Though I would fully support and use more of the "standard" keyboard shortcuts if they implemented them.
Also, it would be nice if the apps that "lock" into portrait mode (I'm looking at YOU, ESPN, among others) could be "unlocked" when it's docked.

I did not know that, thanks for the info. Does it work the same way as the app switcher button on the screen? Also, isn't the only Alt key on the right of the spacebar? Maybe I'm just being picky, but I use my Thumb+Ring Finger for my traditional keyboard.
As for the Shift+Arrow keys, I just used it the other day in class running Prime 1.6 and Shift+Arrow didn't work for me in Polaris.
@Bob Smith42
I would like some hotkeys; There were 2 on my Eee netbook and I found those pretty useful, and on Android it would be more so. They should have done that instead of the Camera, Browser, and Settings buttons.
Wired seems a bit beyond the scope of an Android powered device, IMO.
I concur about proprietary charging.

Yeah you have to use the right Alt which sucks for a little while til you get used to it. If the Alt and search keys were switched it would be better. If you root I think someone could easily remap the search key to alt also, but I am not 100% on this.
I am not sure if the shift+arrow keys thing is an OS thing or an application dependant thing. I do it in the email app primarily and never really tried it anywhere else yet.
For those wanting a wired ethernet port; one of the guys around here got a USB to ethernet adapter to work, but some applications don't use it correctly but I think someone will work it out. Not sure if you need root for it though.
The first thing we would need is the hotkeys for our devices, and other ways to use the keyboard. then we could worry about added functionality. does anybody know where one of tose lists could be found
found one that is being worked on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071739
What: Language switching (Alt+LShift)
Why: For those of us who are multi-lingual switching between languages also affects dictionary and spell check features in applications. Being able to do that with a keyboard switch rather than tapping ths screen and selecting from a menu would be more efficient.
Ability to swap functionality around a bit.
I'd love to be able to set the '<-' back button to ESCAPE (without using the root tricks to remap). Perhaps FUNCTION-'<-' is escape (or remapped to back)
More controllable key bindings
That whole top line of shortcuts should be more configurable. When using VNC/RDP, they'd be more use to me as standard windows function keys. Ability to quickly select them would be great.
The rest? Not too fussed, works great for everything else.
Asus were /really/ smart doing what they did. Hopefully they keep this standard (or even license the connector out).
Docking station variations
I'd still like to see variations of the keyboard. I might buy 2 with different functionality. Need the standard keyboard? Chuck the TF in and go. Doing a lot of remote work today? Drop it into the 'windows key compatibility' dock and use that.
Bigger/Heavier dock with bigger (and I mean monstrous!) keyboard.
One with RFID reader in/biometric scanners. (ok, getting niche here, but you're after what WE want!)
Keyboard dock that's another screen. TF drops into it, gets the extra battery life, but there's another display there, like the new Sony one appears to work. More screen real estate, on-screen keyboard if needed.
Game-board. stub joysticks, arcade quality fire buttons, nice trackpad area in middle. Would make an awesome portable MAME device.
Heck, can see a market for JUST a battery pack, no keys, trackpad, just a battery pack for the tablet screen.
Highend dock
Larger battery,
another few USB ports, maybe even a firewire port,
CD/DVD (if they get a linux kernal with the support compiled in).
Backlit keyboard
Turn it into a full on netbook. 250ish bucks.
Can't get over how cool a concept the docking is, sure there's a market for more flexibility. They just /really/ need to license it. Could be a long term money earner for them if there's others paying to make these things.
Oh, and whilst going off the point, might as well really go for it;
A new keyboard dock with (or a slot for) a HUGE HD(well, SSD preferred, power considerations really). Take the TF around, take some pics, small vids, drop into the dock, do some simple video work with a 200gb SSD to save to.
(and/or use that huge HD for some serious film/music/mame roms storage)
Something very important to me that I would like to see implemented is better text selection.
The cursors selection is good for touch screen, but it kinda defeats the point of having a touch pad.
I'd like to be able to select text with the touch pad cursor, just like you do on a regular PC with drag and drop...
It's really something mandatory for me as I copy paste very often between browsers, terminals and so on ..
Also a way to deactivate page scrolling with the touch pad, for example it's currently impossible to do a drag and drop of something on the screen , without triggering the scrolling of the page.
(usefull for cropping pictures in a web browser and such for example, or any other operation that requires drag and drop)
Alt+tab works ok in the latests firmwares, but it only works while being on the home screen, which is kinda a pain.
It's usefull to switch between applications, but it doesn't work that way.
Portrait
It would really smart if you had two connector sides on the tablet so you could choose between landscape (the present) or portrait mode if you want to use the Transformer for more serious writing assignments.
@Bjd223
I think things like shift-arrows are application dependent, which is why it's that much more of a disappointment that Polaris doesn't have it since it is supposed to be centered around manipulating text.
@Jyveafk
You should really try to use the format that I suggested; your post looks like a wall of text.
@Kumabjorn
If you really wanted that, a bluetooth keyboad might be more up your alley.

I actually have a BT keyboard as well, just not any stand for the Eee Pad yet. It would just be nice to carry it around as one unit and then take it out of the dock and reinsert it in portrait mode. This is after all a wish list, and I'm sure people from ASUS lurk around here.

It seems to be there for Russian, only the shortcut is Ctrl+Space.
The way this works is quite tricky, though. First, you need to use the keyboard icon in notification area to switch to the keyboard to "ASUS Russian" (if needed, adding it as an option in Input Settings). After that, Ctrl+Space can be used to switch between that and English. I don't know if that is there for all non-English layouts, or only non-Latin ones, though.
Also, Ctrl+Shift will pop up the usual keyboard selector menu, which can then be navigated using arrow keys. Still too verbose, but at least you don't have to take your hands off the keys to tap the screen.
I don't ask for much, just a...

Hmm, interesting. I think having a 'universal' connector, for keyboards and other things is viable, and if 'other' things to plug in, having a base/side port to 'plug' to could work well. For keyboards (and the rotating around view IS great for writing), and... other devices we've not thought of yet.
Here http://code.google.com/p/connectbot/issues/detail?id=459 you can find a patched version of connectbot ssh app with correct support for dock keys (control, tab etc).
I like it very much..

Spell check? MY transformer doesn't seem to do any spell checking at all when docked. Am I missing a setting? If not I vote for some type of spell check.
Running a TF101 with kernel 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1 and Android 4.0.3. I recently installed Droid VPN and got it to connect just fine. Worked like a champ to use my netflix app from Kuwait. Before I would get the error "Not allowed in your country" now it loads just fine. Minus the fact its slow as ****. But that's another story. My question is, after installation of Droid VPN I cannot get my Splashtop HD to work like it use to. It would stream my desktop in real time to my Asus Transformer. Now it seems that it has about a 30 second delay and its only like one or two frames then off for another 30 seconds. Would the installation of Droid VPN have caused this? Also, I cannot find the Tun.ko file in my /lib/modules/ anywhere or even in the /lib/. Do i need to get one? Or does the transformer support it natively?
EDIT: Ok, after an hour of reading, its supported natively in ICS. So since it is supported, I have no need for a Tun.ko file. What could have caused my Splashtop HD issue?
What I have done to troubleshoot:
Turned off QOS on the router
Uninstalled Droid VPN from the Transformer
Rebooted Device
hey off topic sorry. but I had never heard of splash top. is it that great? I've tried xtralogic and teamviewer. both work. how's splash top in your opinion
The Droid VPN may have changed some network settings splashtop needs to function properly, it is a rather unique remote desktop app, not 100% sure though, if uninstalling it worked then great!
As to the above, splashtop is the best in my opinion, it has an amazing framerate, if you can get past some of the annoying bugs. Look it up xD

Its by far the fastest remote desktop app without sacrificing quality.
For example watching a 1080p video running on your PC through splashtop is no problem, it displays in perfect sync without any stutter.
Gaming is no problem either, except you cant play in full-screen. You have to set the game to window mode.
I do, however, miss a pinch-to-zoom feature. Running a windows desktop on a 10" screen makes it a little hard to click on small areas (If you use the touchscreen, obviously).
Do note, however, that your PC needs to be quite powerful for the best experience. Its quite CPU heavy. I got a Hexa-core though so Im good
The old asus mycloud version has pinch to zoom, and they're thinking about rereleasing it.. I actually use two splashtops, one for gaming and one for browsing and coding. The old mycloud version I use for browsing and coding as it supports holding down keys to send multiple keystrokes, and pinch-to-zoom. I use the newest one in the market for gaming as it FINALLY released mouse detection, so I can plug in a usb mouse or use the trackpad and it follows pretty reasonably, but they broke multiple keystrokes again so its annoying to type + impossible to play fps with.. still..
Also, 6 cores? What processor do you have to have 6, standard is 1 2 4 8 etc.. I'm guessing refurbed AMD or weird AMD?

Hi. I'm planning on getting a transformer, but I'm interested in the following feature:
Is it possible to control your pc:s mouse and keyboard with the touchpad/keyboard of the dockingstation? I know there are several apps that turn your screen into a touchpad for the pc and sends on screen keyboard text to your pc. But I want to be able to use the docking station just as if it was an external keyboard.
Perhaps even the included splashtop app can do this?
I think most remote desktop apps do this, but splashtop does it for sure.
Just remember there is no right-click in Android, even if you use a normal mouse. You have to long-click to 'fake' a right click.
Remote desktop isn't quite what I'm looking for though. I want to see and control my coputer hooked up to my big screen tv and with remote desktop you're logged of and can't see the big screen.
I tried splashtop laptop to pc, but didn't really like it. Sloppy and there was a trail of the mouse pointer making it harder to aim. Better than nothing though.
What I'm looking for is really just a kvm switch without the video. Synergy does this perfectly on a pc. It even shares your clipboard between computers, another thing I really want to see on Android.

What I'm looking for is really just a kvm switch without the video. Synergy does this perfectly on a pc. It even shares your clipboard between computers, another thing I really want to see on Android.

That severely cripples your options. Theres not a high demand for such a thing since the TF's are like the only tablets with real keyboard and mouse.
There are plenty of apps that give you remote keyboard control and can turn the tablet to a touchpad to control the PC, but I doubt that works with a real mouse.
I use XMouse - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stripe1.xmouse - for remote control of my laptop from my phone. Linux-only, but windows versions of similar programs exist, of course.
I haven't found anything similar for smartwatches. In principle it'd only be useful as a mousepad, and a small one at that, but I think it'd be cool. Has anyone found anything similar?

Well I think we people are trying to do so much with these smartwatches that are not intented for. I can not see any use for what you are describing especially practicality of it. First of all, any app that you use on the watch is actually running on the phone. So if you want to remotely control your PC, just use the phone itself. Using your watch for that purpose will be extremely slow and would be much of an hassle rather than convenient. The touchscreen on the watch is nowhere close to the sensitivity of the touchsreen of any modern day smartphone. That is another issue. If you are really keen on using it as a mousepad only, without seeing anything on the watch, maybe than it maybe faster but than again it has to first communicate with the phone than the phone will communicate with the PC so again there will be hell of a lag...
But my answer to your question is I don't know any app that can do that at the moment.
It depends on what you wanna do
Well, that might answer your question. As far as I know, no "mouse" exists on watch but that doesn't mean you can't control your PC with your watch.
You might use Unified Remote, tasker and it's smartwatch's version. Unified remote is an app that enables you to control your PC wirelessly from your phone (for example, you can play or pause windows media center, launch any program...), very useful and customizable with paid version. Then, tasker is a really really useful app (maybe a bit hard to understand at first) with which you'll be able to activate only few options of your apps. Tasker live extension shows these options on the watch. I've never tried myself but give it a try and let us know.
I don't know if it's clear enough but, for example, I use sonos system (those are speakers connected to wifi that you control with a special app on your phone), using tasker and tasker extension, I can control sonos (play, pause, skip, volume,...) using my watch.
Of course, as the guy above me said, this will never as easy and fast as on your phone. However there are apps that are intended for controlling your PC.
PS : excuse me for my not-that-good-english.
I'm well aware of unified remote and tasker, I've bought tasker since years ago.
The problem is that there's no real way to translate mousepad-type movements to instructions. I have an idea using multiple hotzones in a UCCW widget so that the further away the touch is from the center of the screen, the further the mouse moves. Like a touch nib, the lenovo type.
In answer to the usefulness, why not use it to remote control the phone, not the pc? Android devices can be fairly big nowadays. Mine is 7.7 inches, if I had a 10 inch tab I can see wanting to put it up on the table, lean back, and remote control it.

you can already do this, buy logitec wireless mouse and keyboard with the unify usb dongle, I have this for my laptop and it works on my Z1, I have a usb adaptor with a full size usb socket on the end and micro usb on the other - plugging into my Z1 gives full control using the mouse and keyboard

Well, my objective is to use what I'm already wearing rather than carry more gadgets =) already use a wireless mouse myself sometimes. Having peripherals which are the same size as my tablet isn't fun though

As soon as I find one, I WILL let you know
I'm on a quest to find an app that can REMOTE CONTROL my phone like a mouse or track pad...and as soon as I find it or build it...I will let everyone know about it. FOR THOSE OF YOU good for nothing, pessimist, dream killers, lack of vision, non-dreamers ...I say this...SOME OF US advanced business, guru, tech-geeks have projector phones or need to do presentations and have a phone machine that can do it. Besides my 2013 retina macbook pro or my i7 HP laptop, which im sure could do a fine job presenting or showing presentations through its screen or projector (attachment), I prefer to minimize my load of carrying stuff, specially when I ride my R6 to work meetings. So Mr. ngoonee YOU KEEP on searching and as soon as I find this coveted app I will let you know. Cheers

I guess I am one of those dream killers you mention. First of all, I am not trying to discourage anyone trying to do anything.
You can for sure use smartwatch as a presentation controller with buttons like the Logitech ones. It will work. But for practicality, I simply don't see sw2 being used as a mousepad. It is just my opinion and you don't have to agree with me.
So good luck with your search/app development.

If you don't understand it it's not meant for you, only works with an X server meaning for Linux computers (possibly can be used for X apps in a mac)

Well, basically....
1) SSH on the laptop
2) Profit
If you don't understand that then don't bother.
