[Q][i9023] About the custom CWM recovery - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Excuse me if it's the wrong place to ask this question.
In a lot of threads/guides/etc i read that it's best for the i9023 model to use the modified CWM recovery posted in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686).
My question is: can't I just use the non-modified CWM recovery by koush? (http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/02/clockwork-recovery-image.html) Or is it important to use the modified one?
thank you

j_r0dd has done an awesome job updating cwm from the latest source (with his own tweaks). Koush has not updated his ns build since 3.0.2.4, which was the last version to NOT work for the 9023.

I know the thread but what I mean is that the latest version (v4) has been released since 21 Nov 2011 and my latest kernel update for Android 2.3 was just yesterday. SO my question is: with my current kernel will it still be supported?

If you can't find any answer in the sony thread, then why don't you tried it out by yourself?
In case something will not work, you can always go back with a backup.

I'm just a little scared. I have been an iOS user since the first build of iOS up to the iPhone 4S and I'm new to android. I've got my phone for 1 week now.
I'm just scared to brick it and then not being able to restore it. How do I backup?
You can make a nand backup with recovery (usually called clockworkmod). its like a "BIOS" for android.
You need to install it thus. Is useful to flash rom and so on..
But if you are new to it, inform yourself very well before do anything, and search all over XDA for possible answers.

Yeah I've seen this Clockwork in the Play Store, I'll guess I'll download it from apktop or something. Can you recommend me some threads to take a look at?
Clockwork recovery cannot be found on google play..
You need to search for it on XDA. I found this thread which contains kernels with Clockworks recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1440161
Sorry but I can't help u more than this, since I don't know anything about your phone. Every device has different way to achieve root, and to install recovery.

How to install PA on Galxy Note

Hi friends,
I'm "new" ('cause I'm newly register) in XDA, but I read this forum at least from 7-8 months.
My name is Nicolò, Nic --> SuperNic --> Sup3rN1c...
Nice to meet you!
I have a Galaxy Note with CheckROM 0.7 and I want to move to Paranoid Android.
The istruction says:
DON'T flash FROM ANY SAMSUNG ICS OR ROMS BASED ON SAMSUNG KERNELS (my CM9, AOSP, etc)

My question is: is CheckROM based on Samsung Kernel?!
I think it is, but I'm not sure.
If it's based on stock kernel, must I flash another ROM and kernel first?
Which do you suggest me?
Thanks for all and best Regards.
Nic.

Thanks zacthespack,
I successfully flashed PA 0.5!
I've only 2 issue, I think, that nobody had (i searched in the main thread):
- Chrome stop when I try to go to "settings";
- default Message app stop when I enter a thread; I have imported SMS from a backup made with TitaniumBackup from CheckROM.
Thanks,
Nic.

If there are English recoveries out there, just flash one over your existing one. I think that's the best advice you'll get without us knowing what device you have.

htc one x clone
android version 4.1.9
baseband 4.0
kernel 1.28.708.10
build 4.12
custom build htcextention-403-1-ga-7
thanks for a decent reply and i hope this will help you to help me
many thanks
Ah. If it's a clone, that's gonna be harder, as there's no way to know beforehand that a certain custom recovery .img will work. I think you have 3 choices:
Find out from someone else who has your same device
Try flashing a custom recovery designed for another device (such as the real HTC One X)
Stay with what you've got
If you choose #2, the changes could be irrecoverable. That's just part of the deal when you buy a clone, unfortunately.

[Completed] CWM on galaxy S4 Mini

Hello, i am apologizing if i missed the right thread for this but i have a question. I am using Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Rooted with clockwork recovery mode ver 6.0.5.0 flashed with Odin. I wanted to try to update the version of the recovery so i downloaded rom manager but the app says that my device isnt supported via CWM. How is this possible and what is the way for me to check if I am using the latest version of CWM on my device, because i am using cyanogenmod and today came the long waited update to 5.0 Lollipo and the CM team posted that we need to have the latest recovery in order to flash the new OS but i couldnt find out if mine is the latest and why rom manager says my phone isnt supported.
Hi,
Rom manager is known to cause many issues.... Personally, I'd uninstall it.
As far as recovery, you can flash it with Odin as you did before. As far as what the newest one is, you could ask in the rom thread. But I think most use twrp, which has a thread in your device Development section.
You can browse through that section here.... (I don't see a CWM thread )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-mini/development
And original development here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-mini/orig-development
Good luck!

[Completed] Lenovo A820 - Custom ROM

Hi. I would like to have a custom ROM on my Lenovo A820 device. It has stock rom with S147 kernel but there's no CWM for S147. I was looking for a full pack ROM (S135, S150) so I could flash it via SP Flash tool but I found packs for recovery usage only (except the S147 > no CWM). Do you have any idea how to solve this?

Hello, and welcome to XDA! I can't actually find much development for your device on XDA, much of it is outdated, but I would suggest you ask here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help, just in case someone can point you in the right direction. You will need to register in order to post. The only CWM recovery I can find for your device is two years old and I wouldn't recommend flashing it.
Good luck!
Does it support the S147 kernel? At the moment I can't call to anyone, because the IMEI is missing in the device. Google Play store is missing too and the phone can be only in Chinesse or English. If the CWM recovery that you found support the S147 kernel, then I would be really happy, because I don't know how to move from the S147 to any "normal" ROM with root.
But thank you for the reply!

Hi! Normally, CWM supports any kernel as long as you choose a version that is meant for your phone.
Best wishes

Hi. CWM worked fine year ago for me when it has a S135 kernel, but now the phone always says "FACTORY MODE" even if I flash it by different versions of CWM for A820. It's interesting because there is CWM for all types of kernels for A820 except the S147 so I thought it could be the problem.
Thank you again!
