I know the thread but what I mean is that the latest version (v4) has been released since 21 Nov 2011 and my latest kernel update for Android 2.3 was just yesterday. SO my question is: with my current kernel will it still be supported?

If you can't find any answer in the sony thread, then why don't you tried it out by yourself?
In case something will not work, you can always go back with a backup.

I'm just a little scared. I have been an iOS user since the first build of iOS up to the iPhone 4S and I'm new to android. I've got my phone for 1 week now.
I'm just scared to brick it and then not being able to restore it. How do I backup?

You can make a nand backup with recovery (usually called clockworkmod). its like a "BIOS" for android.
You need to install it thus. Is useful to flash rom and so on..
But if you are new to it, inform yourself very well before do anything, and search all over XDA for possible answers.

Yeah I've seen this Clockwork in the Play Store, I'll guess I'll download it from apktop or something. Can you recommend me some threads to take a look at?

Clockwork recovery cannot be found on google play..
You need to search for it on XDA. I found this thread which contains kernels with Clockworks recovery:

Sorry but I can't help u more than this, since I don't know anything about your phone. Every device has different way to achieve root, and to install recovery.

[Q] New Android Noob

Hey guys,
I just purchased a used Asus Transformer off of Ebay and it has arrived yesterday. I'm pretty much an Android noob but to my understanding the Asus has already been Rooted. From the description given on Ebay the device seems to have a Rom called Android Revolution HD (or something) What I want to know is how can I tell if my device has this Rom installed since it looks exactly like the Asus stock firmware? (Just in case this version is outdated or I want to change to a new Rom) I also see that this device also has a custom kernel ([email protected]) My question is, is it possible to return to the stock kernel of Honeycomb? Or is there any recommended kernels out there? Is it possible to flash a new kernel without affecting the Rom or Root? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for helping a noob out!
Did you buy it from someone else?
Wolfbreaks ROM with DoomLord Kernel = Awesome =)
Yeah I purchased off of someone else on Ebay. I did ask him to unroot and restore to factory settings which i thought he did since I'm not too familiar with Android. However after some reading last night I found out that the device was still rooted since it had the app Superuser. That's why i want to know how can i tell if the device is still running the Android Revolution HD Rom or not. Since I don't know if he removed it or not.
You can identify it at about phone or phones detail.. Theres a build number that state your rom
Wolfbreaks ROM with DoomLord Kernel = Awesome =)
Oh so the build number will indicate if it's a custom Rom or not?
Depends.. Usually itstated what rom you use..

Hello everyone, I'm not sure about which section to post this but, I have read the threads about rooting and going down the ''proper channel'' to root, SE says, if my Bootloader unlock allowed says 'NO', rooting can't be done. I just bought an Xperia Play800i and it says NO.
Is there any way to root it? Also, what is recommended first in your opinion > 1.(Unlock,Root,Flash) or 2.(Unlock,Flash,Root) or 3.(Root,Unlock,Flash).
Many thanks in advance.

sorry but in Samsung galaxy plus (i9001) where i can look to see that effectively is my custom rom installed?
Try going into settings and looking at device info. It may have what rom it is running in there. If not, I am not sure where else you could find that out.

So I just picked up an Asus EEE Transformer..

Running Android ICS 4.0.3 and Build Number IMLL74K.US_epad-9.2.1.21-20120413
Every method of rooting I find has nothing to do with ICS, could someone help me on my marry way, I would really appreciate it. I just want to do a basic root, so that I can maybe change the kernal and pep up the CPU a bit.
Help would be rewarded :-D
ViperMod in the Prime form works for all but the latest firmware otherwise you have to downgrade first
And for future reference search first and questions go in Q&A not themes and apps

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum, I should know better, but I have tried downgrading and it does not work, it seems like once you are on 4.0.3 you are stuck. I just tried this method right here and got nowhere, it says nothing about an update being available...

Thanks and I did thank you, I am trying this now, I am guessing I want ICS .11, since that one is still rootable. I am trying it now, I cant believe I got this it was already on 4.03. Why do people upgrade just to upgrade... jerks.
I will let you know how this goes.
I think .17 is rootable with ViperMod also or you could just do Wolf's method 3 which let you install the recovery blob via abd and flashing the su afterward with cwm
Yeah, I actually went with the .11 Blog backup, and then rooted it without any problem at all, now just what to do, what to do... I do appreciate everyone who helped out, thanks much.

[Q] Kernel Source Code from htcDev

Guys,
I just bought Desire S 2 days ago. It came with GB 2.3 & sense 2.1. I just checked out http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads/ & it has kernel source code for Desire S. Does this mean, I can flash the kernel to my device & it will be updated to GB 2.6.3?
Does kernel means android version here ??
Your device already contains the kernel. You can check for updates from your Settings -> About -> Software update it will pop-up if there is any. On stock phone there is no need to flash anything it comes out of the box
And the android version is generally defined by the OS not by the kernel
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app

I got that but my question is , if I flash the kernel(2.6.5) I downloaded from htcdev site, will this update my gingerbread from 2.3 to 2.6.5 or I could update it only over OTA. ?

What you're seeing on the HCDev site is the kernel source code... that is used by kernel devs to cook up kernels... you can't as an end user just flash the entire source!! It's not the kernel, it's the source. And anyway, kernel has nothing to do with upgrading you to a higher version of any OS... that's what a ROM does.
If you're asking these sort of questions, you hazard a very big chance of bricking your 2 day old device, so as a friendly advice, I'd suggest you do a looooot of reading in the Index and the Guide threads before attempting any kind of flashing. From your posts, I see you're pretty inexperienced with android and a good knowledge base built before attempting all sorts of crazy flashing will keep your device safe from inadvertent bricking.
Read a bit more...ask questions and get answers...and then it'll be happy flashing for you!:good:
BTW, have you even S-off'ed and rooted your device? How were you planning to flash the kernel (...source!!):cyclops:

Thanks. that really helped. And yes I am noob with android. I had an LG optimus black few months ago & it did not had anything like S-ON or S-OFF. I just rooted it & used to flash a lot of ROMS.
I think I need to read a lot about Desire S before I flash anything.
One more question, is there any other way to officially update to GB 2.5 apart from OTA. I have a very slow 2g connection on my device & it will take forever to download some 230 MB of data.
Thanks again.

Apart from updating via ota, there is no 'official' way of updating to a higher os. You don't have to download the ota over your mobile data connection. Wi-Fi is always preferred.
I would still recommend getting s-off and then flashing custom Roms. It is way better and more efficient than official updates which always leave out some thing to be desired. Custom Roms like Endymion take care of all those issues.
Swyped from my Galaxy S3.

[Q] Need help for rooting MTK6515 with Android 4.0.5

Well according to the "build info" if you are talking about the device name as what would be found under "Device" then it is a hsdroid. And there is an Android 4.0.5. here is the display pic of my phone in the attach file

Problem with such types of phones is that its difficult to find a proper rooting method for it as it is one of its kind and finding the drivers for it.Above all,Stock firmware for such phones is mostly not available. So in case something goes wrong and your device gets bricked, its hard to find the stock rom to flash again. Try this link, there are some root methods here,,,be careful...and try to install cwm on it if it gets rooted..once cwm is installed...make sure you make a recovery image of your phone and then i'd suggest you try to go for some custom roms for your phone..So that if something goes wrong while flashing a different rom you can restore your backup and try again..

Galaxy tab4 sm t230 updated firmware

Hi guys
I'm looking to update the firmware on this old tablet as it's a bit out of date and a bit sluggish it's been a long time since I've rooted or flashed anything android. I own a Linux satellite receiver and have flashed firmware images bootloader etc so hoping this will help me. I'm basically looking for a guide from start to finish to bring this tablet a bit more up to date, hope somebody can point me in the right direction.
Thanks.

What to download is in the thread (rom, gapps and twrp), and you can find instructions all over the internet. I've wrote something in my thread of lineage 16 and twrp on how to install them (lineage 16 has the same instructions as the other ROMs I've linked you) too. What I advice you is to understand well what you have to do before doing everything. Otherwise, it can happen that you'll come back and say: "device doesn't boot anymore, what to do now?"
Yes I'm trying to gather as much information as I can so as to avoid any problems when I actually try to do the flash process. I will read up some more.
Thanks again

Hey Matteo- do you think this ROM is still the best option for those of us with a SM-T230 / DEGAS ? There isn't a proper LineageOS build is there? Appreciate the knowledge, thank you.

Hi, I will ask maybe stupid question, since knowledge is 0 in terms of android, but is there a possibility to upload some ROM with android 9.0 to T230? (I even do not know if I haven't made mistake in question )
Anyway I need 9.0 for app and already rooted device following step by step instruction.
Thx in advance

No, since there aren't any devs with enough interest/knowledge to make them.
Hi there. I have found an old SM-T230. I need to install some apps, which require at least Android 7. Will the above Custom ROMS work in that way, that i can install apps build for Android 7 or higher? I fear, i have to find some GApps but thats a other story... if someone can assist to find the right ROM and GApps, this would be nice...
