Hey Guys, I've been in Atlantic City for two days. Have my macbook and my Sensation. Have been paying $12.99 a day for internet. I have two more days and have GREAT 4G signal in my hotel room. I would like tether either using my USB or WiFi tether. I don't think WiFi tether is free, but is USB tethering? And how does it work?
thanks in advance everyone!
It just goes against your GB cap you have on your account; but it's "free". Go for it. Plug in your sensation to the laptop and it will come up with a menu with options.
Only thing you'll need to change is under "Settings" > Wireless & Networks > USB Tethering Settings and select "OSX" instead of windows....assuming it defaults to windows.
I do WiFi hotspot all that time since when I'm at work there's no WiFi n sometimes I need to use my compok, plus I get excellent 4g signal/speeds. Bt like the above poster said, its "free", just goes against ur GB cap.

GB Cap?
Sorry I'm new. What is GB Cap?

Gigabyte Cap (2 gig, 5 gig..etc); Tmo plans give you a tiered gigabyte maximum use for data before they throttle you each month (slow you down after surpassing said cap).
So don't go downloading a movie or torrents unless you want to eat that up really fast; web surfing, e-mail, games etc should be fine.
It should be mentioned that once the cap is exceeded, your connection will slow down BELOW the 2-300Kbps EDGE speeds that 2G normally is capable of. Its generally more 30-40Kbps.

Wow!! I thought it would be throttled back to their normal 3G. They take it all the way down to edge. That is AWFUL!!!
So WiFi tethering on the sensation is free until u pass the cap each month?

Its still free (included in your plan) after the cap although barely usable as a tethering device because of the low speeds. Remember the US Robotics X2 ?
so it goes against your data plan? or against your gigabyte usage for wifi hotspot? I'm confused. Don't I have unlimited internet on my phone? Or is that capped?
Not so much"capped", but all the plans have a throttling point, assuming you have a current plan. It should be in the name of the data plan. The older unlimited plans had a 5gig throttling point. You can check your usage by dialing #web#
fyi: If tmob catches you teathering with there AI Alarms, then you'll have to also pay for a monthly Teather plan...

You simply plug in your phone to a Windows box and on your phone choose "Internet Connection Mode".
The service is free, but it's still unclear to me if it will stop being free after may 15th. I know that WiFi hotspot feature will be extra but I'm not sure about the USB tether.
Really i thought the mobile wireless hotspot was the only thing free for a few months? If memory serves me correctly doing what you just did by enabling "Internet Connection Mode"you are gonna get some big charges and I wanna say that feature has a 2gig limit and they will rape you on anything over that. Wanna say it falls under an actual data plan not even a smartphone data plan=giant ripoff.
Please correct me if I am wrong I just wanted to give you a heads up before you get a nasty bill if you are going buck wild tethering it up.

When you connect your Bolt using USB and chose Internet Connection Mode, your phone's data connection is totally killed and basically transferred to your PC. All you see is a little USB logo top left.
Was curious to give it a shot. Wanted to know if anyone has been busted and charged or any that has zero problems with using these features
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I've not had a problem using them and At&T has never questioned me either.
My kids watch so much YouTube on my phone that my data usage is pretty high each month...(I still have an unlimited plan)... so it's not unusual for me to go over 5 gigs or better.
But someone that jumps from not even a gig to over 5 all of a sudden might raise a few eyebrows.

If you don't have the unlimited data plan, I wouldn't recommend using it. I used it and SIGNIFICANTLY went over my data plan cap and was billed overage charges.
I got busted with AT&T using an iPhone... convinced them I had no idea what tethering was or jailbreaking, etc so they let me keep my unlimited plan. Even let me switch it when I got an Inspire after telling me I needed a "4G data plan", even though they don't have 4G... morons. Anyways, I think I'll try it on here. If you haven't gotten busted playing Live, I should be ok.

Don't count on 10 gigs as a soft limit. Companies are working towards eliminating unlimited plans, and eliminating the one in a <many many> stray customers who hog bandwidth hardly make any difference.
in my town AT&T sucks, coverage is completely spotty, we just got 3G about 2 weeks ago and the coverage is unbearable, in my house i get no service at all but when i go in the middle of town it will jump between 5 bars with 3G to 1-2 bars with edge constantly but when ever i go to a city with good 3G im tethering to my mac constantly and my data never goes over 1.5 GB even though i have the unlimited plan
I used WiFi Hotspot once when my home landline internet was on the fritz for a few hours. It was a nice backup.

I get ur point. But u know I've seen many posts here in some threads where I saw people bragging that they used way excess of 10GB and even as a replacement to home internet service. I was only indicating that as long as one doesn't abuse the network, he/she should be good. Sorry if what I said sounded differently than what I had in mind.

What do you mean "free"?
It is a built-in feature of the Sensation...
You don't have to pay to HTC to use it.
Your provide might charge you additionally when you use your data plan with any other device than your mobile.

You're getting confused with a data plan. Using the WiFi Hotspot is free, unless you go over your data plan (unless your data plan is unlimited).
Example:
your data plan is 500mb
You use WiFi Hotspot and use 300mb
You use mobile browser and use 100mb - total used 400mb
You use WiFi Hotspot again and use 200mb - total used 600mb - OVER LIMIT.
So basically, using data in the browser or an app like Google Reader is the same as using WiFi Hotspot; you will not get charged unless you go over your data plan limit, which is set by your carrier (Verizon, Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile etc).
I'm with Tmobile and it's unlimited data, but your internet is capped after 2gb of data. I was just unsure if TMo will charge for using teh feature on your phone. I guess it's okay.

As redbullcat said, u don't get charged to use the app, just takes away from ur data. I for one use this feature a lot(5gb cap) at work since I don't have WiFi there and my 4G speeds r amazing.

Note: As per a T-MobileUS rep here near Philadelphia, they are "working towards making it a pay-for feature". It's free for now.
Because hotspot works in infrastructure mode natively, I expect that wifi-tether will behave wonderfully even after TMO tries pushing the "feature".

Awesome. I'm new to TMobile and I hope to get the Android Preferred Data Plan upgrade. Thanks!
T-Mobile may send you a text notifying you that if you choose to continue tethering, they will apply the $15/month Tethering option.
If you don't blow your data usage out if the water you probably won't receive anything.
I still have yet to figure out where the "abuse" limit has been set.

That sucks! Denver doesn't have LTE yet, but I decided to sell my Skyrocket on eBay. Didn't want to be throttled on the LTE plan when only using HSPA+.. I average at least 5 - 6GB a month.. wasn't going to stick around and find out if I reached the top 5% on the LTE plan, when only using the slower network.
I'll wait until more coverage becomes active and reaching the top 5% is a long shot!

There's not unlimited anymore because AT&T doesn't want it around, point blank. It has very little to do with the users. It's statements such as yours that justifies their actions and allows them to slide under the radar. Don't blame your peers, blame the company gouging you for profits.
