[Q] Transport WP7 incl settings and apps to another phone - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
Would it be possible to "transport" a WP7 installation incl. data, settings and apps by moving the SD card to another phone.
Mine broke (HTC HD7) and I ordered a new one. Therefore I would like to copy an image of my WP7 to the new phone which is the same as the old one.
Anny suggestions or other hints how to do that?
Thanks
Thomas

Reading PIM data on a computer

My XDA Exec finally went the way of the dodo, with the screen getting totally knackered. Now I need to migrate all my contacts to a new phone. Fortunately, I had a backup of all my contacts from when I did a hard reset and I have them in a file on my computer called "pim.vol".
Does anyone know of some software that can read this file? I can't just transplant it onto a new handset because I'm not planning on getting a PocketPC again immediately.
It took me a while to work out how to use that emulator (after which I found out I didn't need to download it as I already have Visual Studio 2005...) but I managed to get my contacts data visible on it.
Thanks very much

Problem with transferring duplicate sim contacts to phone ...

Hi guys ....
I just reflashed the phone with crc32 winmobile 6.1 version.
Normally I have in my SIM card duplicates like this (that came from my motorola before this):
name1 mobilephone1
name1 homephone1
name1 someotherphone1
name2 mobilephone2
name2 ...
and so on. I try to transfer them with SIM manager, select all, copy to phone, but the duplicates it either wants to overwrite or skip. that's over 50 entries, so it's pointless to copy by hand, I can forget something.
Is it possible to do real copy of them without losing data?
Second question: Is it possible to somehow correctly sync (SyncML protocol) to gsmsync.net ... I could not find any free tool, the only one I've found (that MIGHT) work asks for 60$ My Motorola V3X was able to do it out of the box ... really useful for synchronizations, since I'm not using ms windows on my computer.
Also, SyncML *might* be the solution, as on the syncml server all contacts are correctly organized
My phone is AT&T 8525 if this matters
thanks in advance

Swapping two HD7

My old HD7 screen cracked and rather than replacing it, I found a used HD7 at the same cost (little lower) than a new screen. I've already backed up my Old HD7 can I just do a restore on the New HD7 or can I swap microSD cards putting the old one into the new device, will it work? Or are the backups and microSD coded to a serial number on the device itself?
Unfortunately, it is not possible two use a backup from another device (as far as I know ). You can probably use the sdcard but all data will be lost...
However, you don't have to buy all apps again and Windows Live will resotre your contacts, appointements

I was trying to save my sms, settings, and data that is not restore-able via live.
Search for wp7 app backup for some programs that may help you.
I just ment that you'll lose not everything. Note that by now there is no official way to backup 3rd party data and you probably need a custom rom wich is unlocked (maybe even full unlock)

[Q] HTC 7Pro CLONE???

Hi Guys & Gals, I have a HTC7 Pro that is falling to pieces. I have purchased a new one and would like to know how i can "CLONE" the data from one phone to another. The most important data i need is sms but i cant anyway of backing up the Sms's and restoring them to the new phone
Thanks
Have you tried swapping out the sd cards?
Why is your phone falling apart? I also have this phone and I am worried by your words. Please tell me that you are a rude owner and it's your fault and that the phone hasn't fallen apart by itself.
I came here because I thought I get to see a cheap clone of a HTC 7 Pro with 1000 free Games on it.. something like that
Anyway
You can backup your sms with this little helper:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448197
But unfortunately(?) you'll need an unlock for this.
Well let's see... you might want to try this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379571
I didn't used it, yet (both of them) I just remembered it, and used the search
This one backups your complete phone, and in my mind that should include sms either..
PS: Not sure how many sms you have, but you could just write down the realy important ones. .. I used to store all the sms of my girlfriend as well, but in the end you never really read them again.. until she breaks of (furthermore I wasn't able to save every sms, since the memory on the devices was way smaller back then.. I know that my older sister used to copy her important sms into her diary, before she had to delete them to receive new ones )

How to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 and the latest Zune version?

I'd like to know how to backup developer unlocked WP7 with Win7x64 computer and the latest Zune version?
I've now tried:
- WP7 Easy Updater -> didn't work. Gives me an error message and leads me to Microsoft's support site.
- Windows Phone 7 backup v.1.9 -> didn't work. Gives mw an error message "the input string was not given in the correct order..."
I've tried Zune4.7 dll for the later one -> same thing, didn't work
Is there a way to make a full backup of your unlocked/developer unlocked Windows Phone 7 with any (other) software? I'd need to replace the micro-SD card of my Dell Venue Pro from 32Gb to 64Gb and wouldn't like to loose the music I have in the isolated storages of some Marketplace apps. I've even tried Isolated Storage Spy tool but it doesn't allow to access to the isolated storages of Marketplace apps.
Any help is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!

I've just gone through the onerous process of trying to export my SMS messages from an original HTC Trophy (WP7.0) with Chevron unlock.
Things like SMSBackup don't work (target a higher version of Windows Phone, and hacking the xap manifest at best got the app deployed but not running). Backup programs like the ones you listed did nothing. Something called WPV App Data Backup at least connected and created a bunch of folders but they were all empty.
In the end (after literally years of on-and-off attempts) I gave up on the SMS messages and let Zune do its update. Turns out that Zune does a backup to "C:\Users\JohnCitizen\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update" (or your equivalent) before it applies any updates. It's not a FULL backup in the sense that I'd understand the term, but it includes the isolated storage of apps which seems to be your main concern.
If your phone is already up to date I'm not sure if there's a way to fake an update or force Zune to do a backup as if it were preparing for an update but that might be your best bet.
Side-note: the pleasant surprise was that I didn't need the backups anyway. I've applied 5 cumulative updates to bring the phone to WP7.10.7720 and it still has the SMS messages and app data (meaning I could apply the interop unlock and get my SMS messages out with SMSBackup after all!).

Thanks for the advice but the phone is already WP7.8862 so it cannot be updated anymore. But I've tried both of the aforementioned apps and neither of them seem to work
Another possibility I've been thinking is a sort of "blind copy" of micro-SD if that's possible if the backup of Marketplace apps (and their isolated storages) is not possible. Well, I'm willing to try just about everything to save the music that I have in my phone. It'd be really painstaking and time consuming to download all that music (once again) to my phone after replacing the micro-SD card.
Speaking about your phone, why haven't you installed a custom ROM to it? I've installed custom ROMs to my HTC 7 Pro (Dynamics 2.2) and to my Nokia Lumias (Lumiatrix, don't remember the version right now). And my LG Quantum I've unlocked with the registry code. Makes a life a whole lot easier. Too bad no-one has found a way to port a custom ROM to Dell Venue Pro since I already would've done it. Well, developer unlock will do then...

Originally because I wanted to backup/export my SMS messages. Now I've finally worked that out I don't really care about the phone. Windows Phone is a horrible pile of sh** compared to what Windows Mobile was, much less what Android is now, is so I have no desire to waste any more time on it.

Yeah, you're right. Android is much closer to Windows Mobile than Windows Phone is.
But the reason why Windows Phone and iPhone are so closed systems, is their information security.
Android is quite open system compared to those two aforementioned ones.
I do have some Android devices but I've still decided to stick with Windows Phone. It's the best (well at least for me) OS for business purposes.
Just looking for a Windows Phone 8.x device with the physical QWERTY and possiblity to jailbreak it...
Back to subject: I'd really appreciate if someone could give me a hint how to get those two already mentioned backup apps to work with the latest Zune version, WP7.8 & WIN7 x64.
RE: SMS BACKUP Application
