One thing that I always do to completely remove ads is to just disable all data connectivity, turn off Wi-Fi and Cellular Data (3G/4G/LTE). It is kind of a pain, but you have to install anything and you save battery life and storage (some apps' ads use more battery than the actual app itself, plus the storage space to download those ads)

This.
Droidwall
I use Droidwall (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.droidwall.free&hl=fi) and prevent ad showing apps from accessing the network most of the time and only temporarily allow network access for them if they sometimes need access. If an app needs network all the time and shows ads, I let it show ads.
I also use DroidWall but jumping between the app seems a little inconvenient. At least with AdAway, you don't need to worry about forgetting to enable/disable network access
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give adaway a try.

If you're rooted just use ad away, a good browser to use is adblock browser from the Play Store.
I use minminguard (Xposed module required) and ad away (root required). The app you are referring to says it will allow some ads. Personally i get the developers point but i don't want any ads. But is you're comfortable with some ads it might be worth a trie. If however you don't want any apps i suggested using minminguard and ad away.
I recomend these two :

and

Enjoy, and say thx to developers of these great apps!
Hi, I've been using adFree adblock for the past 3 years and it used to block everything even admob's ads (the ones your getting from apps). Now it's barely do anything.
Any good ones with lists that actually work?
(also I've tried AdAway witch does exactly the same).
Thanks
"Free Adblocker Browser" Not tried it dont know what it does but just happened upon it, good luck.
This is just a browser, I'm looking for something that modify the hosts file
AdAway works great for me, i can't link it right now but you should be able to easily find it with google
(-:
F-Droid
Open source application repository which hosts Ad-Away and Adblock plus app, among a sh1tload of other interesting stuff. Recommended. :fingers-crossed:
Cheers

You could also install Xposed and configure UnbelovedHosts (goes better with Donator app).

I primarily rooted my phone to block ads. I am a long time user of AdFree, however, that app is no longer supported. I am curious what ad blocker does the community prefer. Google-ing options, it seems there is AdAway and AdBlock Plus. Are these good options, or are there others that are better? Also, with a systemless root, is it safe to manually change out the \system\etc\hosts file?

Adaway is the best :good:
I have been using Adaway for 3 years and it has worked great. A couple months ago I also added Adblock Plus.

Why do you need both? Don't they both do the same?
i use adgaurd from many days its creates VPN and lets us browse through it .. better dont use any kind of vpn when you are doing any money transactions
Adaway is good, but use Firefox (with ABP), uc, Yolo, Yu etc. Browsers as ADAWAY doesn't work good with browsers without inbuilt adblock features
adaway works via host file (you don't even have to keep the app open). It blocks every ad in every app installed on the phone
Hi there people,
In the past people just needed a rooted device and an app like adaway, well things evolved and we're here having annoying ads from any app or website, any proper method to eliminate this?
I know yandex and ad guard works great for just websites, but I'm not very happy with yandex browser overall
P.S. Adaway and adding tons of extra hosts doesn't work, in the past adaway was the best solution(when android was around 2.3 version)
EDIT: Some of the hosts(I did add plenty) I've added in adaway seems to stop a few ads but not all, if someone knows a better way feel free to discuss it here
Try adguard.

Try Via, the browser is freaking great and totally free. And since it's not base on chromium a lot of ads/pop-ups will not work. I use it with ad away and so far so good.

Well for browser I prefer opera especially for FB messages as others would ask to install messenger, now about an overal blocker I'd be more interested. In the past(Android v2.3) an adaway app would do the trick on a rooted phone, now? it's not enough, which worries me. I don't want d$m^ ads using my data and I don't want to be annoyed
Who thought it was a good idea to put ads in apps, websites etc ...lets drink his blood
adguard is good for ads blocking (and cheap, 9$ for lifetime licence )

I use brave browser... No root needed. I was using Samsung internet with the adblock plugin. Also a good choice.
