[Q] Atris, Inspire, Or Infuse - General Questions and Answers

As time to upgrade is here, I am pondering which AT&T phone i should get. Should I get the Atrix, Inspire, or the Infuse?

I would forget about Inspire at the very beginning, since it's already a bit yesterday.
Personally, I hate Motorola's UI (Motoblur) for Android, but with a custom ROM (coming in the future?) it would be superb. On the other hand, Infuse has had really nice reviews and seems like a good phone; thin, well designed and powerful.
So you could consider between those two phones, Atrix and Infuse. I would probably go for the Samsung.

Be careful about the Infuse, your wife or girlfriend might mistake it for a gnarly bug and smash it.

I'd go for Atrix, it'll last longer over time.

infuse
infuse is a great phone and big screen
after that Atrix

Personally i wouldnt trade in my Inspire at this point. just decided to root and IMO its awesome.

x1000, I'm on T-Mobile and have the Sensation. I just had to give the Atrix a try despite only having edge. It's amazing how nice this phone is. I switch back and forth every couple days.
Plus 2.3.4 is out now for the Atrix, it's running awesome on mine, but mine is all stock besides SIM unlock.

AT&T really needs to bring in some more dual-core devices. If your looking for performance and battery life definitely the Atrix.
For looks and Cyanogenmod and all the other cool stuff the Infuse or Inspire.
If you like the Sense interface then Inspire, no doubt.

Atrix for the power. Infuse is nice but in a year the Atrix will be way ahead.

I bet what the Atrix can do the captivate does better. But thats just me....
No one knows yet if the atrix will have a locked bootloader! If so it would be dumb to buy it IMO.
sent from my SGH-I897 running Serendipity 4.3 w/ Exists SuckerPunch SpeedMod Remix kernel and KP1 modem!!
I believe the Nexus S and the Captivate have the same hardware, but I may be wrong...but if I am right I say go for the Captivate because I don't like the Nuxus S form factor (Basically the metal back plate of the Captivate vs the Nexus S plastic backplate)
Hmm whoever says Captivate does better then Atrix will, is just biased in a way. I mean I got a captivate and gave it to my brother, he really wanted to try android and he doesn't get in to phones that much.
I loved the phone, only because I rooted it and stuff and samsung sucks with updates. If you dont wanna mess around with your phone then atrix hands down will blow away captivate, performance and feature wise. Buying captivate right now is just bad choice. Dual core processor, tegra 2, hdmi out.
Plus I have to give credit where its due. Motorola has really stepped up their game in updating their phones with latest android. I have no doubts that they will have gingerbread on Atrix in the coming months.
I think Atrix will be launching earlier then previously thought, mainly because verizon is getting iphone 4 and att will counter that with atrix 4g. Plus Atrix 4g is the only phone launching that is ready for Att's LTE network.
^
Agreed, I really hope those that are use to customizing their Captivate understand the bootloader situation with the Atrix. Or you will be disappointed.
I for one, don't mind running it stock (hoping it's able to be rooted). I just want reliability and stability from this phone, plus the webtop looks kickass.
I will still keep the Captivate for my other line, and buy the Atrix off contract (no chipin required ) after a month or so of it's release to see how all this plays out. Patience will save you from buyers remorse

Move over, I think I'll be in the same boat My main line will either be the Atrix or HTC. The other will have to be the Captivate for a little while, but I'll have fun tweaking the hell out of it
If you want the latest and greatest..then wait..If not..get one now..You got 30 days to decide once you get it..With what has been ported for the Captivate you have many many choices..and you don't really know what the phone your waiting for will have or do..or be capable of doing. I suspect if not on the upcoming generation of new phones..then by the 1.4 to 1.6 dual cores..the boot loader will be locked..and you will have a a harder time doing anything with it..so...if it were me trying to decide...I would pick up a brand new Captivate right now..trick it out..and enjoy the hell out of it..The old saying is appropriate in this case..." A bird in the hand...is worth 2 in the bush..."
Mac
I'm projecting the latest and greatest will only last 3 to 6 months. So whatever you purchase, just be sure your content with it. Unless you have money to burn.
I doubt that Motorola will lock the bootloader on the Atrix.
Either way, the Atrix will run circles around the lowly Captivate.
Motorola locked the bootloader on the droid x and it was still hands down better then the captivate, I owned both would have stuck with droid x if verizon had better coverage in my area. I almost regret giving it up and just sticking out the ****ty signal. So more then likely bootloader will be locked but it will be cracked. and even if locked bootloader no way in hell will the captivate be better at anything over atrix, captivate had nothing on x and atrix does even more, so what is captivate gonna do to even be on par with it? samsung has moved on from the captivate so should u. anytime a manufacture moves on that quick from a device even a device selling in the numbers it is, its a bad sign. Besides Motorola been in phone biz way longer then any of them, I had a startak and it was a sweet phone of the time. And those big stupid phones way back in the day that was huge that was motorola aswell.
I say wait. A locked bootloader having Atrix > the Captivate (stock, custom ROM, steroids, etc. lol)

I think they now recognize what XDA/Custom ROMs can do for their phone(s) in a positive way, and they'll come to some sort of compromise.
What that is, and if it's good enough, remains to be seen.
lol.... all these complicated answers.... just buy it youll have fun

The only thing i would have to disagree on in a way is the part of Samsung moving away so fast on a great selling product. It doesn't necessarily mean they didn;t like it and need to replace it fast.. it could just be that they want to get to work on their next "latest and greatest" to beat the captivate is all.. but who knows.. unless they posted that they made a mistake, i would be willing to bet that they are just trying to get their next best phone out is all.. So far, i believe the captivate is the best selling android through ATT at the moment. i am not up to date on the rest though . ive heard good things about the nexus S, but the one thing I heard aobut it that kinda made me go for captivate is that supposed nexus S took away the SD slot?? and this made captivate have largest storage capacity.. but ive been happy with it so far.. wife loves it and eventually when i get a new one, will give her mine ..
one thing i do wonder is since ATT is now coming out with their 4G, i cant recall if I am going to need to replace my phone or just my SIM to get the 4G capability,, any recall off hand? pretty sure it was the phone that I will need to replace, but would be great if only needed the sim
As I said: Wait for the Atrix. Motorola actually updates their phones. Don't like Motoblur? Download ADW.Launcher or Launcher Pro. Android 2.2 already does everything I need in a phone OS and I'm sure they'll bring Gingerbread to the Atrix.

[Q] Best AT&T Android phone so far?

If you was to buy an AT&T usable Android phone today, based on price, performance, features, hack/root friendly, ...what would you get?
My Tilt has a cracked non-working screen and so I figured I'd get a new phone. I'd prefer to have this phone fully usable for the next 2 years.
Wait a few months and get their SGS II variant

So, no to the Streak , Inspire, or the Atrix? I thought the Infuse 4G was AT&T's SGS2 phone.
Right now I'm borrowing a friend's backup Iphone 3gs but I don't wanna keep it long. What else will AT&T have that might be worth waiting on? Might just try to get my Tilt repaired.

I lost my Captivate at a bachelor party 2 weekends ago and I found myself in this predicament. I got an HTC Inspire, held onto it for a week, and just didn't like it. It was heavy and and I felt that my old Captivate was actually better than it in more than few ways.
Then I saw that the Samsung Infuse was out. I traded the Inspire for the Infuse and I'm much happier. It's a monster for sure, but it's basically an improved Captivate. GPS is great, the screen is amazing to look at and very responsive. I heard it could be months before the SGS2 is re-branded and on the shelves.

Captivate to atrix

As above
I'm getting a straight trade +100~
Would out be worth it? Sounds nice......but.....its locked down and still only on froyo :/

If you are getting atrix plus $100 then there is your answer, but if you are throwing in $100 with your captivate then no its not worth it.

I hava an Atrix and a Captivate. I love both phones. He is right though, its not worth it. I would say that you should wait, hold off a few months and wait for the SGS II. AT&T has a variant coming sometime this year, and with the rollout of their LTE network starting this summer, you have to imagine that the SGS II would be a great canidate to be one of their 1st LTE enabled phones (that's personal opinion, not based on any verified info). Aside from that, the performance differences between the two phones is noticable, but not DRASTIC. Having actual, working GPS is nice, and some of the other features are cool, but honestly I would say wait.

well TBH, I don't really mind about the SoC other than the fact that its a dual and it would be significantly better than the single core that my captivate has.
and I don't live in the states, so I"m not really affected about LTE and such since we don't have LTE or anything where I live.
what I am worried about is the locked bootloader and such cause I can safetly run gingerbread on my captivate, but I won't be able to be on gingerbread once I'm on the atrix and my ROM choices and tweakign and such will be very limited until we can get the bootloader unlocked since motorola is such an ass to lock it.
I'm still debating this....with half of me saying "no" and half of me saying "yes"
does your atrix "feel faster or smoother" compared to the captivate?

Ahh, then yea all the AT&T stuff is kinda irrelevant, lol. The rom choices out there are minimal due to the bootloader encryption, obviously, but there is a HELL of a lot of working going on to fix that. Don't want to speak too soon but we may be close. Khoulk, tenfar, TBH, and a bunch of others are working on it. The Atrix is faster and smoother, yes, but we still don't even have an ETA for Gingerbread.

I would check online to see what the going rate for a used captivate is before offering it up + 100 for the Atrix. Compare that to the price for an off-contract atrix and you'll have your answer as to whether or not its a "fair" trade, value wise. Comparing the two phones to each other depends on how much you value aftermarket development. I'm a hardcore themer and that's why I kept my cappy. I haven't released anything for the Atrix yet, and I've had it almost since launch. I was able to get the Atrix through work at no cost, so it was win-win for me. Hardware wise, it is superior (except for the screen. Super Am. beats out the qhd 960x540 IMO). Development wise, there's no contest. Cappy is on Gingerbread. End of discussion. Its a trade-off either way. That's why I said wait for the SGS II to become available whereever you're at: dev friendly + hardware that is equal to or bettan than the atrix is almost every way. They're both great phones, IMO... but the SGS II is gonna be even better. And some phone that no one knows about that will be announced 2 months from now will be even better than the SGS II, lol.

I definitely wouldn't do it - the Captivate just has so much more to offer with a thriving developer community. The Atrix is supposedly on the verge of being rooted, but it will likely take awhile for things to really boom (and there's no telling when the root will even be successful). I have a few friends with the Atrix, and while it looks to be a decent phone, most complain about battery life and call quality.
I'm no fanboy - I'd jump ship from the Captivate tomorrow if the price was right and hardware/software looked to be legit, but right now the Captivate feels like one of the best possible phones a regular user and geek can have.

The devs have already rooted the phone I think. They are trying to unlock the bootloader.
Don't do it OP. After messing around on an Atrix for awhile, it is a good phone but feels a little finnicky.
A captivate on GB feels a lot smoother than a stock Froyo Atrix IMO.
My opinion you would be paying for a downgrade

I'm digging the front facing camera, the working GPS, and the resolution bump.
The atrix doesn't run as hot when playing games (my backplate used to burn me) or when running GPS and the battery last considerably longer.
What do you do on your phone? If you read more news and the like, the screen is great. If you watch more movies on your phone, then you might like the sammy screen better.
The fingerprint reader is nifty as well.
I am weary of samsung's gps on the infuse and the SGS II so I will steer clear..

In the end it's your decision. The only way you can really go wrong is if you went to the extremely locked down iphone. Enjoy your new atrix my friend.
don't do it! I have a captivate and I just bought an atrix for $300 and was planning on selling my captivate. But after using the atrix for a couple of days I decided to sell the atrix instead. It is just a bad user experience. Mainly because of the screen and the lack of response. Whenever I would use the slider to slide through contacts, it would lose track of my finger and call someone on accident. Also it is an eyesore to look at when you are scrolling.

Coming from HTC Aria.....Infuse or Atrix

Originally this year I had a Iphone 3G and going to upgrade to the Atrix, but at that time the BL was locked and didn't want to wait around. So I returned the Atrix and bought a used Aria online. Well last night my Aria broke and now looking at a replacement, I plan on root and installing custom ROMs. I am wanting to know which is probably the best one to go with with custom ROMs?
How do they compare as far as battery life, speed, video, and such?
This has been asked before. This is one of such threads here.
Thanks for the info.
What broke on your aria? I might be interested in buying it for parts
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
That other thread is too outdated especially now that Atrix has an unlocked bootloader and real custom roms available now. I too would like to know the difference. I've never seen so many contradictory reviews of two phones lol. I see reviews where people say the pics on the atrix are way better than those on the infuse. I have the droid 3 or whatever it's called camera on my Atrix so it becomes a moot point because the pics coming from that camera build are better than the build on the ATrix.
I just really would like as many opinions as possible to get a good feel for why people who went from the Atrix like the infuse better. Preferably those that went from a rooted/unlocked bootloader Atrix.
1) Our screen still blows away the Atrix
2) The Atrix is still kinda big and clunky
3) The unlock process makes it clear that you've unlocked and is grounds for FULLY voiding your hardware warranty even if the problem is not software-related.
I've had both phones. In my opinion the Infuse is better than the Atrix. I found them to be equally as fast. The display on the Infuse even with "lower" resolution blows the Atrix away. When using the Atrix I found the battery to get so hot it was annoying.
Verizon has a buy back program for people to trade in their old phones. The Atrix in prime shape would fetch about $125. The Infuse brought in about $190.

+1, I don't even think it's close. Infuse is easily the better device, in my opinion. I absolutely love the Infuse, while the Atrix was mediocre, at best. The Atrix looks better on paper obviously, but the Infuse is the better device. I can't imagine anyone (who's used both) saying otherwise.

The original digitizer was having issues, so I bought a replacement. Well I almost had the new in when I forgot to put the ear piece back in and when pulling the digitizer back off it slipped and I ripped the ribbon clean off. So I installed the old one again, but the lcd is not coming on. Can't figure out what it is.

Thinking of switching over from Evo to Infuse

The wife signed up with AT&T and got herself a nice little WP7 phone today. I was thinking about adding a line and buying the Samsung Infuse for $100 from them and rolling with it.
Thing is... I've had my HTC Evo for over a year and I run MIUI. I have for a long time now. I want the faster phone, bigger screen... cheaper bill than my Sprint!
Ideas? Thoughts? Anyone done this switch? Evo to Infuse?
It looks like a bad ass phone.. I do love my Evo though... The Evo is pretty bad ass in itself IMO.

The wife signed up with AT&T and got herself a nice little WP7 phone today. I was thinking about adding a line and buying the Samsung Infuse for $100 from them and rolling with it.

I rarely switch. I usually just add...lol
However, the Evo is a nice phone and is similar to the Inspire, which I have. But the Infuse is a much nicer phone with the SAMOLED+, larger screen, better audio chip and stronger CPU. The only thing it needs right now is Gingerbread. It's still on FroYo. But rumor have the GB update coming out by the end of this month.
The Infuse is much lighter and the battery life is much better than my Inspire. It's also elegantly styled. It has 16GB internal storage. I love mine and am glad to have it.
It's still on Froyo? Wow. I didn't think any device like this was still using Froyo.
That just stopped me dead in my tracks.
im on 2.3.5 myself ... CM7 FTW

It's Samsung, expect this.
Anyways, we've got GB ROM's already, and 3 leaks, so it's bound to be released any day now (also, the GB leak is a build from like a week ago, so it's VERY recent).
Don't worry about the "It doesn't have GB" things, we do have it, just not released by AT&T.

You gotta rememver its still a relitively new phone. Official GB is on its way and should be here soon. Honestly the infuse is what i picked to hold me over til the nexus prime or the new samsung, i forget the name, note? W/e. Seriously this is an awesome phone and you wont be disappointed.

Hell, if they have CM for it then I think I can live with it. I'd miss MIUI though..
I will keep on pondering. Her phone should be here tomorrow and then I can sign up online with AT&T and add a line and all that over the computer. Then maybe I'll add myself a nice line with an Infuse.
I just posted by Evo on Craigslist. Doubt I'll get what I want for it.. http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/mob/2614360614.html

Well it's a relatively new phone, but Gingerbread was already old news when it came out, so what's really sad is that AT&T released it without Gingerbread to begin with. Then again, it's probably better that they didn't take the half-assed approach that Rogers did. :/
That said, depending on what features you depend on and how good AT&T's HSPA+ network is in your area, you can run one of the Rogers-based GB ROMs without any significant problems. And of course, as has already been said, official AT&T GB shouldn't be very far off.
Honestly though, I'd wait if I were you. While the Infuse certainly is better in a few areas, the EVO's a perfectly good phone. And not to knock our devs at all--they do a great job--but CM7 isn't really ready for primetime over here. If you want to run MIUI on an Infuse, expect a fair amount of inconvenience compared to what you probably have come to expect on your EVO. If you want to switch to AT&T, the Galaxy S II will be out in a week and a half, or if you extend your timeline to a few months, you can see what LTE phones get released.
Its tough man...both great phones...i would stick with the evo...it has more roms and stuff no reason to jump to the infuse when in 6 months it will be way out dated...
Galaxy note perhaps? Unless its too big for you -
S7 Infuse 1.6 Ghz
if you are in a city with frys electronics you can get the infuse for $20, or add it online! maybe that makes it easier to switch
A few good phones coming out soon, I'd wait.

here is the add, have till thursday at 9 to decide
I switched from my Evo to the infuse. I miss my Evo a lot (mostly development) but the infuse is all around better.

Thanks
I think I'll wait a couple of months. Let's see what else AT&T comes out with soon. Since the wife will have AT&T for a long time I think I'll just hold off and strike at the perfect time.
Thanks everyone for the advice. XDA is truly a great place to be a member of.
We actually do have MIUI, although it's the 8.19 one it's great!
The only big problem is the SD card can't be accessed from MIUI, but we have 16GB internal storage which is great! If you happen to get one, just PM me and I'll send you a link.
Will do.

You sir, are AWESOME!
Thanks for the heads up, this is the best deal I've seen for the Infuse (even better than the $50 TargetMobile deal awhile ago).
Been waiting for the iPhone 5 to show its face but I just might go ahead and get the Infuse at this price.
Wonder if Fry's can waive the upgrade fee?...
