I bet what the Atrix can do the captivate does better. But thats just me....
No one knows yet if the atrix will have a locked bootloader! If so it would be dumb to buy it IMO.
sent from my SGH-I897 running Serendipity 4.3 w/ Exists SuckerPunch SpeedMod Remix kernel and KP1 modem!!
I believe the Nexus S and the Captivate have the same hardware, but I may be wrong...but if I am right I say go for the Captivate because I don't like the Nuxus S form factor (Basically the metal back plate of the Captivate vs the Nexus S plastic backplate)
Hmm whoever says Captivate does better then Atrix will, is just biased in a way. I mean I got a captivate and gave it to my brother, he really wanted to try android and he doesn't get in to phones that much.
I loved the phone, only because I rooted it and stuff and samsung sucks with updates. If you dont wanna mess around with your phone then atrix hands down will blow away captivate, performance and feature wise. Buying captivate right now is just bad choice. Dual core processor, tegra 2, hdmi out.
Plus I have to give credit where its due. Motorola has really stepped up their game in updating their phones with latest android. I have no doubts that they will have gingerbread on Atrix in the coming months.
I think Atrix will be launching earlier then previously thought, mainly because verizon is getting iphone 4 and att will counter that with atrix 4g. Plus Atrix 4g is the only phone launching that is ready for Att's LTE network.
^
Agreed, I really hope those that are use to customizing their Captivate understand the bootloader situation with the Atrix. Or you will be disappointed.
I for one, don't mind running it stock (hoping it's able to be rooted). I just want reliability and stability from this phone, plus the webtop looks kickass.
I will still keep the Captivate for my other line, and buy the Atrix off contract (no chipin required ) after a month or so of it's release to see how all this plays out. Patience will save you from buyers remorse

Move over, I think I'll be in the same boat My main line will either be the Atrix or HTC. The other will have to be the Captivate for a little while, but I'll have fun tweaking the hell out of it
If you want the latest and greatest..then wait..If not..get one now..You got 30 days to decide once you get it..With what has been ported for the Captivate you have many many choices..and you don't really know what the phone your waiting for will have or do..or be capable of doing. I suspect if not on the upcoming generation of new phones..then by the 1.4 to 1.6 dual cores..the boot loader will be locked..and you will have a a harder time doing anything with it..so...if it were me trying to decide...I would pick up a brand new Captivate right now..trick it out..and enjoy the hell out of it..The old saying is appropriate in this case..." A bird in the hand...is worth 2 in the bush..."
Mac
I'm projecting the latest and greatest will only last 3 to 6 months. So whatever you purchase, just be sure your content with it. Unless you have money to burn.
I doubt that Motorola will lock the bootloader on the Atrix.
Either way, the Atrix will run circles around the lowly Captivate.
Motorola locked the bootloader on the droid x and it was still hands down better then the captivate, I owned both would have stuck with droid x if verizon had better coverage in my area. I almost regret giving it up and just sticking out the ****ty signal. So more then likely bootloader will be locked but it will be cracked. and even if locked bootloader no way in hell will the captivate be better at anything over atrix, captivate had nothing on x and atrix does even more, so what is captivate gonna do to even be on par with it? samsung has moved on from the captivate so should u. anytime a manufacture moves on that quick from a device even a device selling in the numbers it is, its a bad sign. Besides Motorola been in phone biz way longer then any of them, I had a startak and it was a sweet phone of the time. And those big stupid phones way back in the day that was huge that was motorola aswell.
I say wait. A locked bootloader having Atrix > the Captivate (stock, custom ROM, steroids, etc. lol)

I think they now recognize what XDA/Custom ROMs can do for their phone(s) in a positive way, and they'll come to some sort of compromise.
What that is, and if it's good enough, remains to be seen.
lol.... all these complicated answers.... just buy it youll have fun

The only thing i would have to disagree on in a way is the part of Samsung moving away so fast on a great selling product. It doesn't necessarily mean they didn;t like it and need to replace it fast.. it could just be that they want to get to work on their next "latest and greatest" to beat the captivate is all.. but who knows.. unless they posted that they made a mistake, i would be willing to bet that they are just trying to get their next best phone out is all.. So far, i believe the captivate is the best selling android through ATT at the moment. i am not up to date on the rest though . ive heard good things about the nexus S, but the one thing I heard aobut it that kinda made me go for captivate is that supposed nexus S took away the SD slot?? and this made captivate have largest storage capacity.. but ive been happy with it so far.. wife loves it and eventually when i get a new one, will give her mine ..
one thing i do wonder is since ATT is now coming out with their 4G, i cant recall if I am going to need to replace my phone or just my SIM to get the 4G capability,, any recall off hand? pretty sure it was the phone that I will need to replace, but would be great if only needed the sim
As I said: Wait for the Atrix. Motorola actually updates their phones. Don't like Motoblur? Download ADW.Launcher or Launcher Pro. Android 2.2 already does everything I need in a phone OS and I'm sure they'll bring Gingerbread to the Atrix.

So basically... I'm wondering what maybe some of the Captivate users are looking at getting.
I'm on my fourth Cappy. Now the speaker stopped working on it (Just the headphone jack works for sound now).
Pissed at this phone, honestly.
I'm going to see if I can talk AT&T into letting me get a different phone, on the basis of this being a lemon.
Any suggestions?

If I had to replace my phone right now the Inspire is the one I would get. It's really a nice phone and has a lot of developer support.
I bought an inspire off-contract to replace my captivate... it's pretty nice. I would recommend it.

My speaker stopped working twice and had a new one put in warranty. Third time it happened I just tapped on the speaker and it came back on and now I keep a lil peace of paper inside right below the speaker to keep a lil pressure on the connections. Been working great

Press the speaker usually works.
I'm done with the Captivate, in other words. Too many issues with it.
Custom ROMs are the only reason I've hung on this long.
Would you not consider the Atrix or (shudder), Jailbroken iPhone 4? The Inspire's battery is so small.
My main thing- is I think I'll sorely miss the Super AMOLED. The next phone with AMOLED is looking to be the Infuse, and who knows when that comes out.
I've tried replacing my captivate but imo there is nothing out that compares yet.
I started with an inspire but took it back 3 times due to poor screen. Then tried an atrix but mine was junk. I had it for 2 weeks which for half of that time it was in it's box on the fridge while I went back to my trusty old captivate.
I think no matter what I end up buying eventually I will still keep my captivate as a backup just in case.
If I were you I would try to get another one, I've had not a single issue with mine other than the gps crap. Get another captivate and wait for something better to come out than the crap that att is pushing now. The inspire is an old design and the atrix was released too soon in my opinion.

Its so sad that ATT doesnt have much options in smart phone section. Still the best android phones are inspire, atrix and captivate....
I own a captivate and i am very happy with it...but when atrix was launched i thought wow dual core will be so nice...my room mate got it...and i am so happy i didnt just jump on it....the first thing is screen...nothing can replace SAMOLED....other thing was I saw Atrix hanging, where as my custom rommed captivate was running smoothly...Atrix has that locked bootloader issues..
Sorry I'm on wrong forum but got a friend whose captivate wont turn on its dead not rooted.

Wow I've had my Captivate since 3 days before official release and it still works perfectly.
Honestly I'm waiting to see if T-Mobile and AT&T merge, that way when I get my upgrade (In August) I can hopefully buy the sidekick 4g... But that's depending on so many circumstances, plus samsung is making it. *gags*
Design Gears dumped the Atrix, eh? That isn't too reassuring, lol.
Infuse is out based on the battery life.
It looks like the only option is the iPhone 4..... 3.5" display... Not as much power under the hood as my Captivate, either...
Hmmm, I've got some decisions.
I guess I could always sell said iPhone 4 in 6 months when the GS II comes out or something. Apple fans are always willing to buy.

The merger is a year out. That's already in black and white ink. In other words, they won't even start the process, until a year from now. Which means it'll be at least, 2-3 years before customers see the benefit.
Just learned in this thread DG returned his Atrix... Checked the signiture it's true
Maybe should wait for a while, there are many phones coming to AT&T this year.

From what I've been reading, all Tmobile bands will be switched to ATTs bands so the radios would have to be replaced.
The Inspire is the best thing AT&T has at the moment, but its battery is horrible.
CM7 Inspire 4G
So warranty does not have access to iPhone's.
It sucks, but I don't think I'll ever be able to get them to get me one if I want one. It's also not surprising because obviously part of Apple's deal is that Apple takes care of warranty for the iPhone, thus ATT Warranty does not have access to any.
What they offered me was pretty much anything else though.
The Inspire and Atrix were too new, they didn't have any in warranty yet. Those are the only two Android phones to be considered equivalent or upgrade (Inspire is out solely based upon the battery).
They also offered me some Win 7 devices but in all honesty I don't see those being equivalent in any way. I haven't really researched it and know squat about Windows 7 Phone.
So I'm stuck now. I don't know if I should wait a month or two to see if the Atrix comes into their warranty or just replace the Cappy...
I also got sick of the Captivate and got an Inspire. It definitely works a lot better than the Captivate, and aside from the battery it much nicer. If you don't like the big screen though that might also be a consideration. Personally the battery does annoy the hell out of me though.
I just switched to the atrix other than shi$$y programming in loved cappy so I just took it all the way to stock kies'd it to 2.2 and gave it to my nephew. The atrix is like running a custom rom except its stock that actually works heard a lot of good things from the guys over in the atrix forum is love it so far.

I've just recently moved from AT&T back in August and jumped in on the free online offer for the G2X for both my wife and I. So far both phones have been running perfectly stock without issue. I know a lot of attention is being placed on the new Samsung offering but the pure Android experience is awesome. There is not much if any bloatware to complain about and the phone is very well constructed physically.
With anything in the technology industry this phone will be surpassed in speed but it's still a contender, even against the SGII and some of the newer HTC models. When I switched carriers this was the fastest phone available with the best features. I love T-Mobiles free WiFi calling and the Android unlimited data plan (20 Bucks) which goes along way for military users since I travel a lot.
Give the phone a shot, if not the SGSII is here and the HTC MG4G slide also offers specs near to that of the G2X.

No, it's not worth an upgrade from a mt4g to a g2x. I also came from a mt4g only reason i got the g2x was because i found one on craigslist for a steal and it didn't cost me my upgrade(waiting for the Hercules for that).
I would wait for either the Hercules or HTC Amaze 4g, but if none of those caught your attention... might as well wait for the s4 line of chips and or quad core early next year. The G2x is a beast of a phone, but so is that mt4g you got, it can still hang with most phones out today.

Hey everyone,
My contract with AT&T just expired and I may switch to Verizon to go for the Galaxy Nexus or Razor Maxx. However, I like the Galaxy SII that AT&T only offers. I currently have a Captivate and love it. I just want to know if anyone has any opinions on the SGSII or Nexus. Thanks

I still have my captivate but it just collects dust after getting my att sgs2. I'm pretty unsure why you would even have to consider upgrading to a phone that is 100 times better then the captivate.
Well the Captivate was the first Android I had and it's so versatile. And I see developers are porting ICS for it. But I can't argue with the power and awesomeness of the SGS2
if I were you I would try an ics ROM. I would recommend docs Master ics (v3.1)
My cappy is blazing fast. I'm talking 0 lag!
MC 3 runs completely smooth with not a hint of stutter or lag. That's with no over clocking! When I oc/live oc it with nstools, I can get it up to 1500mghz.
Run it for a while and wait for the sgs 3.
Hope this helps you on your decision.

I'm loving ICS and the anker battery on the cappy, it changed my decision on wanting to upgrade now. My upgrade was eligible last Oct, but I holding out till summer when all the quad-cores come out (I HOPE!!).
Yea, I guess waiting is always an option, especially if more powerful phones are still to come! I'll look more into ICS and see what I can do, I'm on Serendipity 7 right now and it's pretty laggy, at least for me.
I went from a Captivate running S7 to a SGSII. To say the SGSII blows away the Captivate is an understatement. I have felt zero need to even root the phone yet. It is great out of the box. Fast, stable, great battery life. Not one force close since I got it 6-7 weeks ago FYI, still running 2.3.4 Gingerbread. If you get one, don't update to 2.3.6. It has battery drain issues.

FC out of the box was never an issue. Why anyone would buy a new phone that is only running GB is beyond me. If I was in a position to switch carriers I'd go with the Nexus, you're getting the good stuff that everyone else is just trying to catch up to.

Well isn't the sgs2 slated for an ICS upgrade? I know Samsung said that the captivate won't get ICS. And we all know how much of an ordeal it was just to get froyo, let alone gingerbread on it, so it'll probably be the same way for the sgs2, but it has better specs than the Nexus
If I were you I would upgrade in a heart beat. Hardware-wise the Captivate just can't compete with the dual-cores phone you mentioned. And the battery from the Maxx is a beast!
Keep in mind that AT&T is now charging doubled the upgrade fee (from $18 to $36). Switching to Verzion can easily get you free activation + free shipping via some online retailer in addition to their "Twice the data, same low price" data promo, which is quite a deal unless you got grandfathered with AT&T previous data plan.
I also loved the Galaxy S II, only downside is no 4G LTE with the exception of the Skyrocket. Rumor has it that Skyrocket HD is coming to AT&T, with a full 720p Super AMOLED screen upgrade from a 480x800. You might want to wait on that.
Just my two cents.

What he said
I still love my C(r)aptivate. I loathed it something aweful because of the utterly fail GPS, but all-in-all it's still a fantastic phone. Seeing that I have the LG Thrill as my main phone(I use nav a lot and needed better gps or i wouldn't have) which just came out and is still on FROYO and a phone that came out last July already has Gingerbread...It's nice to know that it is still supported. A lot is to be said about not having a contract being held over your head too. Personally if I were you I would keep the Captivate and leave my options open. Some awesome phones will be coming out Q3 this year. I'm looking forward to the Tegra 3 powered HTC Endeavor. Bide your time and know you can jump ship to another carrier any time you choose. IMHO
Yea, the GPS was a huge fail, I actually sent back my first one because apparently the first manufactured devices were "defective" but even after I got a new one my GPS didn't improve much. The captivate is under powered, but it sounds like some pretty awesome phones are in the works and not having a contract allows for some breathing room. I guess I'll just see which carrier releases the most desirable phone in the next few months or so and go from there.

No it's not, if anything call it "outdated." The device is getting close to two years old! When it came out no one was honestly considering a PHONE having a dual-core CPU. In all honesty they don't need it! Quad-core is just ridicules... The ICS ROMs we have now show that the phone is by no means under powered.
As to the other idea, all I can say is that AT&T seems to be getting more and more greedy, their practices more sleazy... Or at least being faster to jump on ways to improve profits and reduce costs, of which we the customers are seeing no benefits...

Improve profits and reduce costs as in raise rates and reduce services. Or Promise a technology, then abandon it before fruition. I liked the falsely advertising a technology ploy. I've been with this phone service since it was Cingular, which in my opinion was a far better company. It's been getting harder and harder to renew my contract. I find myself peering over the fence to see how green the grass is on the other side.

I know what you mean here... I've been with them since Cingular as well and I know the prices will go up over time, but their service hasn't improved one bit. One big bonus of Verizon is the coverage they have nationwide is FAR superior to AT&T's. When you have to sell a Microcell to imporve coverage in your customer's houses, you know you need to upgrade your service. Verizon will probably end up having the better LTE network too, as AT&T never went nationwide 3G, as Verizon did looong ago
I'm switching to Verizon as well in March. Why? Att and their throttling madness .I get throttle every month right around the 2gb mark 2 weeks into my billing cycle after that data is unusable. I just sold my Sgs2 skyrocket yesterday using the captivate until my contract is over .

I got the captivate the second day the phone came out, so I have the phone with all the problems. I ALMOST upgraded to the SGS2, until teamhacksung's ICS rom came out. It runs so smoothly that it actually makes my captivate usable! I would suggest waiting for the SGS3; thats what I am doing. Why buy a phone that has been out for a long time (SGS2) when the upgrade is just around the corner!
No matter how good these ROMs get, it is impossible to fix my terrible GPS, connection dropping issues, battery drains, and random crashes.
I just read an article about the throttling and how inconsistent it is at various data limits. I just can't believe they get away with it. It just shows how inferior their network is to Verizon if Verizon can handle it smoothly. Yea the SGS3 is worth waiting for. I think I'm gonna try ICS on my Captivate for now and hopefully that will hold me long enough. I just hate that it doesn't have a front facing camera.
Cappy still rules!
1. On stock ROMs - they don't cut it. XDA matured to fix all bugs and shortcomings of manufacturer ROM.
2. May be skip AT&T upgrade alltogether? See what they did to GSII Skyrocket and Note? Bastardized and downgraded to Snapdragon old chip.
3. Get GSII from ebay, may be? It is around 500 now.
I know Sprint service is terrible but my plan is so cheap because I get 22% off. Any ways I have had the Gnex for 2 days and it's good but the screen is kind of grainy looking. So I want to get thoughts on which phone people feel will be the best deal over the next 2 years.

So it's basically SAMOLED vs S-LCD 2?
Well, I've always liked S-LCD because everything is crisp and every viewing angle is a pleasure to see. Even with SAMOLED+, I always preferred how LCD looked. However, it's undeniable that you'll get worse battery life with LCD. So the choice there is what's more important to you.
GNex also has the biggest dev community, so 2 years from now: you'll still have a sure thing versus a phone we don't even know if the bootloader will be unlocked for sure.
On the other hand, the specs for Sprint's HTC phone is better. Plus a MicroSD slot!
I picked up my Evo LTE earlier this week and couldn't be happier. The size and weight of the phone is just perfedt. And its so thin. And probably my favorite part is the incredible camera speed. It is faster than any camera I've used.
I played with the gnex at sprint. While the idea of playing with open source and long-term support and updates sound enticing, the overall feel if the new Evo won me over. Plus, I've grown fond of sense UI
But you'll enjoy either device I'm sure.

HTC EVO Number one !!
i would go for the galaxy nexus any day no matter what carrier its with
I'm going to have to make the same difficult decision this fall. I think I'll stick with the Evo family, but really they both seem like great phones with great dev communities.
I've had the Galaxy Nexus for a little over two weeks and it's great, but overall I think aside from AOSP ICS, the Evo 4G LTE is better.
So i need to make this decision tomorrow. My mother has my original hero running cm7 and has been working great for her. I upgraded too the 3VO this past July. I am not a sense fan at all. I been running MIUI for the past 7 months =no 4g or 3d support. I could careless about 3d, the phone just had a great processor at the time. So Ive broken it twice. 1st time i called asurion (cracked screen) and got replacement. 2nd time (cracked screen) .I bought a cheap digitizer and installed it myself. The problem is the cheap digitizer never worked 100% right to begin with. I then dropped the phone in the toilet 1 month ago. I managed to work with it up till now where the digitizer is so bad i cant even unlock my screen. Asurion wants 100$ for a replacement. I called sprint told them i dont even want the phone anymore since its basically EOL. They told me im eligible for early upgrade. That option costs 115$ which can be billed to my fathers account (NP he makes enough $$$ in Saudi Arabia). I have to purchase my replacement or new phone myself. Im sick of the evo 3d. I want a phone that is gonna have full CM9 or MIUI support. Im aware the galaxy nexus already does. Does the EVO 4G LTE look promising for support? Or is HTC gonna be a pain in the ass with their closed source proprietary bull****.
I dont care about a micro sd if the nexus comes with 32gb internal.
I prefer battery life.
The question is will the Qualacomm LTE be NOTICEABLY faster than the nexus TI OMAP?
Im paying for this myself (23yrs old). I wanna get the best possible deal. Will sprint buy back my broken evo 3d if I restore it to stock and act like it works? What would you do?? Appreciate any advice. godless XDA community
camara this camara that wait untill the galaxy to kick ur but 20 pic is shutter mode beat that
I think the Galaxy Nexus would be better, honestly having the latest Android version is such an advantage compared to other phones. All the apps that come out will be designed specifically for AOSP and you won't be left behind in app and OS support in let's say 2 years.
Which phone did you end up going with? I ran into the same issue and since I was a big Evo supporter I stuck with the Evo family, I'm a loyalist for some reason

I know Sprint service is terrible but my plan is so cheap because I get 22% off. Any ways I have had the Gnex for 2 days and it's good but the screen is kind of grainy looking. So I want to get thoughts on which phone people feel will be the best deal over the next 2 years.
