What will the next "Nexus" phone be ?

I am a big fan of the "Nexus" brand myself, it feels like Google's version of the iPhone, in that there is no carrier bloatware, or brand name UI's, just the "pure" Android OS.
I have owned the Nexus-One, and now the Nexus-S, and liked both these phones a lot. Before that I had an iPhone3G, it was cool when it first came out, but now I just feel the iOS is dated, and not up to date with Android or WinMo7.
Just curious as to what the next "nexus" phone will be, and when it's due out ? I heard rumors it will be an HTC made phone, called the Nexus-Two, running the next generation Snapdragon processor, that is dual core 1.2ghz. Not sure if it will be a 2.4 Honeycomb phone, or the 3.0 Ice cream ?

It will probably be a tablet with honeycomb on it.

That brings up another question too, what are approx release dates for Honeycomb and Ice cream ?
I think Honeycomb is the 2.4 # ? And is that the one where the developers have been bragging will bring the MAJOR revisions to the UI, and really be a big leap for Android, not just the little changes from like 2.2 Froyo to 2.3 Gingerbread, but a huge leap forward ? Plus be the first release that is made for dual core ?
Then not sure what Ice Cream 3.0 is, if Honeycomb brings the major UI changes.

My assumption is that HTC will regain access to AMOLED and Google will return to them. And the Tegra platform is looking to be the most mainstream next year, they even announced Tegra 3

It's most likely that Honeycomb is 3.0 as it will be a massive jump for tablets and phones. the 2.4 rumor was just a random tipster from androidandme.com which has no credibility at all.
But we don't know until Google officially announces it.

Thanks for the info Yeah I heard "Honeycomb" comes out on the next gen tablets due out in Feb, and then will be brought to the phones in like May or so, to be released before iPhone 5.
The spy shots of that 10" Motorola tablet looks pretty sweet.

Motorola Nexus Tab Will be out early 2011 with Honeycomb.
As far as a phone goes? No one knows. And won't know til late 2011.

I think I read something recently where Google said the Nexus brand phones will not just be the annual Christmas release only. But that there will be a "nexus" device launched with every major OS update. And that the next Nexus device will be a Honeycomb tablet. And the next Nexus phone will be running Android 3.0 "ice cream"
Guess time will tell...for now I am very happy with my Nexus-S

Well it usually takes a year for them to release such a large incremental update.

The more important question is, how many desert names can they come up with to apply for the rest of the alphabet? And what happens after Z?

Z = Zingers an American Snack cake... as for after that, it is anyone's guess. Maybe fruit?

Nexus M and Motorola makes it. Just a guess.

Nexus is chosen from whomever sells the most Android phones. Nothing more.

The next Nexus will be, compared to the specifications, very fast.
It will also lack something people are going to start a couple of thousand threads about.

That's my guess as well. I see Google giving everyone a shot at the Nexus brand, in the spirit of openness. Not sure how the names will go, but it won't be held to Samsung/HTC, it'll go to whoever has the best to offer and can provide the best bang-for-buck.

Yeah I'm guessing Moto. Something doesn't feel right about them going back to HTC-- I doubt Google will want any speculation that there is a favored hardware developer. Google is juggling a ton of Android handset makers and will likely do everything to make sure they don't shift to WP7.

Seriously, I saw a couple of reviews of the Nexus S which had actually 'NFC isn't very useful yet' as a con! That's just stupid.
On topic: I really hope Sony Ericsson. I would never buy a 'normal' Android phone from SE, because of the drastically changed interface and the Xperia X10 with 2.1 not getting updates anymore, ever. But their phones are soooo sexy. Look at the upcoming Arc! Wow! If they co-operate with Google, the only thing SE will be the master of is the outside of the phone. Google determines the interface, the updates, if dual-core is needed, etc. etc.

Roms? Why aren't there more?

Why does it seem like the galaxy tab gets more developer attention than the xoom? Is it easier or what? They have all kinds of roms whereas the xoom has like 2. Just a question.

The car thing is some what right. The xoom came out as a "kit car", you'll need this and that BEFORE you can drive it. Where as the galaxy came complete. You can just drive it off the lot. So there is more interest in the galaxy.

That seems lame. I love my xoom. Just want to customize it more. I have no developing skills although I wish I had some. I used a adb for the first time with the xoom and it took a lot of trial and error. I have the galaxy s and flashing stuff is so easy on it(via Odin and cwm). Just wish the xoom would get more attention.

The reason why we are not seeing ROM's is because the Honeycomb source code has not been release nor will it ever be. We will have to wait until Ice Cream Sandwich for ROM's to start popping up.

Q3 Q4 who knows for sure. They just need to hurry up. It feels like tablets are kinda lacking in dev stuff.

why in iconia tab they are able to have touchwiz and is not the same for us?

I try to donate to all who develope for my devices, my way of letting them know its appriciated and to keep up the good work, if you cant spare much, no biggie, everyone likes to get donations, even if its a dollar or two.
On another note we could make it appear to be a rom, but would only be a theme, a sham. Its definatly source code realese that is the problem.
Ice cream sanwich is google bringing honeycomb to the phone right, i thought, ics on phones, but honeycomb on tablets(because of its tablet opimization). Someone please correct me if im wrong, still fuzzy on the part.
Last thing, still cant decode 3.2 apks with sdk, still getting brut error, anyone have any knowledge of when brut will be realeasing this fix?

ICS is supposed to be the best from gingerbread and the best from honeycomb mashed together with some other goodies included, hince the name it is also to be universal for both phones and tablets, that way making apps much more abundant.
I am also excited for what it will bring the demo at the google i/o conf was amazing to say the least and i am sure the just scratched the surface.

Don't forget that alot of developers were give a samsung Google I.O.
I'm sure it helped a bit not having to pay for one.

From what I've read on the forums I think most of us nexus users used to have a Palm Pre running webOS. I just have a quick question for the awesome devs in this community.
Now that webOS has gone completely open source, do you guys thinks there is a way to port a rom for the NS4G or NS?

Lots of things on WebOS run another than Android buy at this point it is pointless with ICS. Prior it would have been great but I would love the card implementation

I cant wait to give it a try. Even if a lot of users see no point, it sounds like fun.

Yeah, just for fun would be great and with the speed of the nexus it would be a great dual boot option.
I really miss the cards and notifications on webos, even the ICS still don't compare on how they worked.
Once they realease the source code let's hope someone would help. I would gladly do it but i have no idea on how to compile Roms.
If someone has a 101 or a tutorial to read, would be great.

I'd like to see a webos style launcher with theme support come from this.

Yes, Ice Cream Sandwich is great and all but that doesn't mean it isn't worth giving it a shot. Hell I miss WebOS like crazy.
And ironically I had came here to post if someone could try and port it. Nice to see I wasn't the only one thinking this.

Is ICS going to be worth it?

I know that many are excited about the 'sweetness' of ICS that's suppose to drop this month. I did have a TF Prime for 2 weeks (returned it due to issues). I miss the shiny svelte tab for sure, but it had way too many issues to deal with. No thx on being a BETA tester for ASUS unless they decide to send me a tablet for free.
Anyway it seems we've been hearing/talking about ICS for ages now (in fact it's only been 9 months or so I'd guess). When details where finally released on it, I admit I was somewhat disappointed.
Sure for people on Gingerbread, ICS is a huge step forward, but for all of us that have been using HC for up to nearly a year now, it didn't seem to offer that much.
Looking over wikipedia the only thing that I see that gets me excited is Hardware Acceleration of the UI, just about every other feature either exists in HC, is available in apps, or makes little difference to those of us using a TF101 (IMHO).
Now i will admit that once the Dev's create a stable ROM I'll drop that onto the device but I'm just not that excited for a new font. I do think that ICS being both a tablet and phone OS is good going forward for app development, and we should see those advantages play out over time in a more stable environment as well as more available apps, but as it stands currently I'm just not that excited for ICS.

Talk about different user experiences ....WOW....I wish that Google could somehow shut down everything prior to Gingerbread, and force everyone up, with at least 37% of devices using these long outdated OS versions, it's no wonder that we constantly hear the 'fragmented' comment about Android.

I'm not sure what kind of ground breaking innovative features you were expecting in ICS. Although I agree that some of these features are available with third party apps, I believe your average everyday user will benefit from having them built in rather than needing to search through the market once they hear of some feature they would enjoy. You have to remember that we are almost surely the minority of overall Android users here on XDA compared to the general public, as we are more comfortable tinkering with our devices than others. And anything that can bring Android tablets closer to on par with the iPad, currently at the top of the tablet world, is a benefit to the Android platform and is "worth it."
As far as the fragmentation goes, I don't think the different OS versions you mentioned are what most people refer to as the "fragmentation" of Android. Rather, it is the manufacturers skin (HTC's Sense, Motorola MotoBlur, etc.) of each platform, which can be confusing to common users when switching between them. However, this is part of the beauty of Android; users can pick which skin suits them best, or as power users such as those of us on XDA can do, change the Android software if we like the hardware of the device but don't care for the software. Granted, more to your point, most iPhone users are probably on IOS 4 or above compared to those on Gingerbread or above, although I can't verify this fact with a quick Google search.
IMHO, I'm more excited to see CyanogenMod 9 on the TF101 than ICS in general. I've been a loyal user of Android Revolution HD, but I'm looking forward to see what the CM team has to offer in regards to the options/customizations available seen in every other CM ROM (AR is based on stock TF101 ROM, with plenty of enhancements of course).

If you would have tried out paulburton's ICS port you would see the truly immense differences that it brings. Honeycomb was not a finished product on is release and was only pushed out to compete with the iPad so there were a lot of things wrong with it. Now with ICS we will have a smother experience along with greater uniformity. The promise of CM9 is just the icing on the cake

Yeah I'm looking forward to CM9 on the TF101 as well...I did try out an Ipad2 after i returned my Prime. I didn't find much that i could criticize about the device ( other then price)....the thing was solid and just worked (which is more then i can say about the Prime)....I'm looking forward to the MeMo hopefully by then ICS will have been patched up to a level that makes it robust. The padphone as well looks good (and being able to use this dock is sweet)...but i do wonder if it will even make its way to NA
As for expectations for ICS....I don't know maybe I thought we'd see something revolutionary....like User profiles....more support for external devices like DVD drives... native printer support

Its virtual machine on top of linux so most of what he is saying could be done but would obviously be cm based or aosp done by our devs
User profiles are available already theres a root app that creates partitions for each profile or user
Printer support i know through bluetoth theres a couple apps for it but nothing native or other than wifi/bluetooth
Im just saying its good to dream and in this guys case both the things he mentioned are do-able

I've tried the HoneyComb on a variety of Android tablets (transformer, Toshiba thrive, galaxy tab 10.1, acer, and some others), and it seems laggy: scrolling the home screen left and right lags when doing it fast. is ICS better and faster on the original transformer (for those who tried the ports)?
I'm planning on getting an EEE Transformer (not Prime) soon, before they get out of the market. Already it got sold out in 2 local shops who put them on promotion, preparing for the prime. I might find the base 16GB Wifi only for around €350.

All android printing apps are printer dependent. Android has no printing layer. I think this is ridiculous. Android has much more potential for being a desktop replacement than iOS (I use it for 90% of the tasks I use my MacBook Pro for) but there is no printing layer.

For the whiny little snots who don't think the TF101/HC is fast enough or must always have the latest versions, ICS ought to be worth it. Everything else is just evolution like Froyo -> Gingerbread. Worth it but not a game killer as long as stuff works. I prefer ICS to HC the same as I prefer GB to Froyo.
On the Prime I really noticed the speed difference in ICS, but was already 250% satisified with the TF101 speed under HC (which isn't all that different from the Prime on HC IMHO).

im an update junkie first and foremost but i am eager for ics for other reasons as well. CM9 is awesome. But a stable release allows custom roms to pick out the latest working code. Even a semi stock but optimized rom with custom oc kernel is great.

The only thing that you must have notice was the browser speed. It lags terribly on HC during loading of the page, but from what I read it also lags on ICS sometimes, so I don't know if the update will be worth it.

Hmmm..thanks! I never even thought to look in the market, i have a canon pixma mp495, which is listed under compatible printers with the app Canon EPP, so maybe it will work
I'll let you guys know if it is worth it. (replacing more and more functions of my laptop daily this transformer is)

I have a brother wifi printer and there is a nice app for it. It has been updated several times since I first downloaded it. I have it on my tf and my captivate. It has helped me greatly.
For example, yesterday I picked up my daughter after work and went home. She fell asleep about 15 minutes before we got home. And, we were planning on going to dinner because we had a coupon. So, I pulled in the driveway, left the car running, let my cappy connect to my wifi and printed the coupon from my phone. My wife grabbed it and joined us in the car while my daughter continued to sleep peacefully.
I never thought a smart phone could help my daughter get a better nap until yesterday.

Opera Mobile has been my daily browser on each, so I can't say that I noticed much. Page loading in the stock still tends to be slow. What is different on the Prime, is how much faster/smoother the ICS UI is compared to HC on the Prime. I'm almost tempted to hit the force GPU rendering option in Settings -> Developer Options, just to see how wide spread it can be.

You should see Apple's OS fragmentation, it's MUCH worse than that. Steve Jobs was a liar when we told the world of Android fragmentation.

Fragmentation plagues any device with frequent OS changes..I'm still on Windows XP on one PC, windows Vista on two of them, and Win7 on another PC..also, my wife has gingerbread on her phone, I have honeycomb on my tab, and ICS on my (identical model to my wife's) phone. Eh..any technology that becomes so quickly updated and made obsolete so easily will create such fragmentation..people can't always afford to upgrade just because their device is replaced with a new model, some people just don't like change even when OS updates are available. This is also exacerbated when the old OS will not run on older devices thus updates are not possible for many people who would like to have them. Perhaps ICS will run for a while until Jelly Bean comes out and allow old froyo and GB devices to leave the market and consumers retire them, and more devices will be consolidated on Android 4.x- will certainly make developing cross-platform apps easier to achieve.
Of course, now that I have ICS, I can't wait to see what JB is going to add to my device..

So.. I've owned 1 froyo device, 2 GB devices and now.. A Galaxy Nexus wearing ICS.
Looking at my 4 devices, I havn't been as amazed by the Galaxy Nexus as I were with the Galaxy S and S II, I must admit. I often think back, to the times with Gingerbread aboard.. I think it looked well, it had all the capabilities that I used, and still use in my daily life, on ICS. The only think it didn't have was the "Recent" button, which really is just too obsessive now, lol. I use it well too much. Anyway.. What do you guys think?
I ended up missing some of my older devices. (They are sold.)
- Hm, I know ICS isn't "polished" just yet.. But I don't see anything HUUGE to come, other than 3rd party stuff such as from here. Out of the box.. I was more amazed when I held my Gingerbread devices, than when I held my ICS device. (Maybe it's just me.)
I'm not trying to flame, I am just thinking.. If this has something to do with me also liking Windows XP alot more than I liked Windows 7. Mayby I'm just old fashioned..

I really like ICS and some of the new features it adds. A newer OS version may never live up to the first time you were introduced to the OS as a whole. Mobile OS versions move fast and I imagine a little over a year from now developers will be wanting to drop GB support.

I totally see where you're going. And I agree with you most of the way..
How ever.. I felt that Froyo lacked a few things.. I just think.. That Android in it's prime, was Gingerbread.. Really.. I'm not trying to say that it's how it is at all. I just.. Man.. Gingerbread was just.. Sexy, lol.
But the thing about development for GB, yes, ofc. it someday will be dropped. I like ICS, I do. it just feels like.. A new UI.. Cause I don't use the things.. They have applied under the hood.. Or you know.. I havn't seen the "impact" it has given.. If you know what I mean. For my daily experience, it feels like.. GB and ICS does the job equally good.. Except for that recents button.

As far as the elegance and fanciness goes, ICS. And if you have a device that offically supported ICS out-of -the-box, there ain't no reason to use Ginga. GB is ideal for those, whom devices doesn't support ICS, or the roms are not yet stable. ICS is also techically better.
