Will I have to manually DL the GB update when it comes out? I'm guessing yes. The other option, I would guess, would be to revert back to stock.
To download manually would be only if somone post a Nandroid of their GB and then you can do a restore. Otherwise stay stock and whenever the update is ready just dowload it via OTA (over the air)

ok
thanks. I'll revert when the OTA is out.
no need...im almost positive that official gb release will b available on xda before the ota ever hits your phone...plus it'll be pre-rooted and everything...i recommend stayn rooted and just wait for it...in the meantime cm7-rc1 should be out any day now...the latest nightly is extremely stable with the only problems I know of is ad2p is still broke (waiting for lg to fix) and gps is still a little slow to lock...other then that is a very solid build
I personally went back to stock and unrooted. Stock has been the most reliable for me and I want to receive the update ota versus an image someone else made, just a personal preference.

What do you mean, the Nexus S and the Nexus One both officially have 2.3.4
I think you are referring to 2.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
As of right now, only Honeycomb (3.0) supports dual cores (fully) which is why tablets run it. Nexus S was the first to run Gingerbread and, like all Nexus's, ran up to a stable version (2.3.3) which was then officially released to the Nexus One as a stable build. 2.3.4 was recently announced but I think the only benefit of that is Google Talk's Video Chat and other minor tweaks. I guarantee the Nexus S will get 2.4 officially pushed OTA and probably even the Nexus One (as they aren't so different). Although I suspect LG will be the next manufacture to produce the next (and first) Nexus phone running on 2.4 later this year.
2.4 is the upcoming version which will be the first steps into uniting the tablet version of Android (HoneyComb) with the existing OS running on phones so that they can merge and focus on one OS instead of 2 again.
As far as updates, I don't know how LG does it. Coming from a Nexus One, GOOGLE pushed updates to use OverTheAir, but Samsungs and others give you a manual download link anyway. Plus I wouldn't return to stock when there is no date in sight. For all we know, you could return to stock for 2 months only to get a manual update anyway. Plus any rom based off the stock (Eaglesblood and a few others) will get the OTA update notification. Only AOSP roms such as Cyanogen and CM based roms won't. I think it is a feature they physically turn off.
Best bet is to hold onto your panties, run whatever works best right now. In the event that the OTA and released, you THEN return to stock and grab the update. Be warned that we may not be able to root the GB update right away thus you'd be stuck with it.
CM7 is newer anyway.
2.4 is an upcoming update which will still be called Gingerbread, it will allow dual-core apps to run on single-core phones. It's more of a legacy thing than anything else.
Ice Cream Sandwich will be 3.1, and Google will probably release a new Nexus phone that runs it natively.

Just got a Samsung Mesmerize for USCC and was told that Froyo will be pushing out soon. Should I root and update to leaked 2.2 or wait for official?
Also I was hearing that once Official Froyo is released Cyanogenmod ROM should become available? Is that correct and/or will more some become available once the Official update is released.

It's a personal choice.
If you upgrade your phone at all (even if only doing custom 2.1 installs) you are going to most likely have to use Odin to go back to stock 2.1-update1 in order to install the official release (I'm pretty sure your phone will have to be as it was out of the box to install their update)
And no, cyanogen MOD just doesn't become available once the source is released, there still has to be people to work on building it - but it will be a lot easier to do once we have official source code - then you may see a team get together to build a supported version for the galaxy s model (which we could then port to mes). Also, once we have that we can also expect to see the kernel MOD's make it into 2.2 from 2.1.
My question is, why is everyone so concerned about getting the official drop, when i'ts going to be bloated to hell just like stock 2.1 is? Soon after it drops, you're going to see a custom deodexed and non bloated ROM and a new kernel - so you're most likely going to end up upgrading to that anyway. So in my opinion, upgrade now - then skip the official bloat release and upgrade to our customized version once i'ts complete (built off of the official 2.2 source).
What Version of 2.2 is the most up to date EC10? And it wont update when the official OTA is dropped correct? Its actually for a friend of mine I have a Dinc and only have experience in that.
On a side note. Why is this Odin thing so popular here and not Flashing with Clockwork like on the Dinc?
Phillip Fry said:
So what do you recommend? Its actually for a friend of mine I have a Dinc and only have experience in that.
So if I just root it now (Z4root) will the the official update brake the root? If there is no stable 2.2 ROM yet then I will just wait. Really only need Wireless tether for now. Any and all help is appreciated.

And btw, it isn't an OTA update - it would be downloaded on your PC and installed via Kies. (not sure of the details, but this is what I've heard many times)
2.2 is already at the stores as of yesterday, our tech was given permission to upgrade the Mesmerizes in stock and employee phones, so if you were to buy a new one it'd be running froyo..
I personally got my own i500 upgraded yesterday morning and got to spend the last 24 hours reinstalling all my apps.. USCC should make an announcement on Facebook very soon.
I'm interested in removing some of this bloatware, what would be the best way to do that running the offical 2.2?

Hi guys most of you might find this question silly but there are some of us newcomers who are still getting into this!
So, I rooted my phone, have ROM Manager and CWM Recovery, version 3 and my question is how we're going to update to official GB when it becomes available? Will we do it through official T-Mobile update, or will some of you guys make it available for us?
Thank you all!
Yes...
you should be about to get it either way. If you get the official update you will probably lose root... If you wait a few there will be a rooted version posted by one of the many xda members...

One more dumb question: Why is everybody so excited about the official GB update, when we have right now a few GB leaked versions with some custom ROMs (Bionix from TeamWhiskey, etc... ) available, for which as I hear, many say are excellent? Is this official one gonna be better in any significant way than these custom already out? Thanks! )

OK, I get it... So, all these unofficial GBs are sort of limited because they lack these LG stuff they're (hopefully) putting into the official one. That's why it's smart to wait a bit more.
Hopefully it will fix most or all the problems.

Yes, that's the case. The leak has issues (which makes sense, it's not a finished build), and almost all Gingerbread mods are based on the leak so they have the same issues. I know CM7 is using the Gingerbread source instead and has fixed a lot of the issues, but not all of them.
The official update is not only going to be completely stable (hopefully) but will come bundled with better drivers/kernel support which will fix most of the common issues with the phone (hopefully).
I've gone through an Over The Air update to Android before, and if it's like what I experienced, you're going to get a pop-up that asks if you want to update now or later. Choose later if you want to keep root, someone here will have the official build rooted probably within the hour but definitely within the first couple of days.
In the mean time though, don't be scared of trying out one of the ROMs that are available. I swear by CM7, but I've heard wonderful things about EagleBlood and Ultimate too.

I have heard that official updating the rooted phone could actually brick it? And when a mod is nightly version, does it mean it it not completely stable? I am interested in CM7, but I could not find a stable version on their site.
Thanks!
i have question also since it's related to thread title. i'm running stock right now but rooted. once i update to gingerbread cm7, will i have to install all apps and settings all over? and will call log and stuff like that disappear also?

You should be able to get all of that stuff after startup my hitting the square boxes in the initial setup. Worked for me yesterday with the Eagleblood 2.3.4 ROM, when someone recommended it to me rather than Titaniumbackup which screwed up my phone a lot because I went from Froyo to GB

When I did an OTA update, it kept all of my apps and settings. I can't remember if it preserved call log.

I don't know if it will brick or not, my OTA was not rooted. And CM7 nightlies are NOT completely stable, but they're on build 58 by now and the ROM works perfectly fine. The only issue I can see with the phone is the top bar they added to the notifications menu that has toggle-able settings like WIFI, GPS, etc sometimes doesn't show up and in the camera, it calls both cameras "back" instead of one being "front".
But if you're concerned with stability that much, use the leak or EagleBlood.
I am now getting it hope I like it because I was enjoying custom roms lol
I just remembered I never updated to 2.4 and was using ROMS I always wondered why my bluetooth wouldn't work lol
The OTA Update?
Or something else?
Wait! Don't update just yet! Let it download, but don't apply the update yet!!!
Wait for a developer to pop in so that they can instruct you on how to send it over to them. It's important to have a clean download of an OTA update as soon as possible, to share with a developer.
I think he means blur version 2.4.330, not actual android 2.4, it hasn't even come out yet and won't come out for a few more months.

Ok, so I have a Nexus S, not 4G just the I9020A.
Up until now I kept stock Android on it, and the most creative I got was using ADW launcher EX.
After seeing ICS and waiting SO long, I just had to have it, I can't wait on Google anymore.
Anyways, I have a few burning questions
1. I'm running Cyanogenmod 9 downloaded from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356228, is this the LATEST version? I know it's called alpha 11 but I keep reading Alpha 13, can't find it to download though, so confusing.
2. Wifi isn't supported yet, right? It's not just my phone?
3. USB transfer is so sporadic, is this normal?
4. The Market barely works. I managed to download the Twitter app, and that's it, from other videos I saw, ICS automatically re-installed all their previously downloaded apps, no such thing happened for me.
5 - most important question of all - With all of this rooting, flashing, custom ROM's etc, when the OFFICIAL Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus S gets released by Google, will I still be able to download that and install it over the air like previous updates? (When I had stock gingerbread it just notified me and bippity boppity boo)
Or will I have to do something else?
I really love ICS but the ROM still feels just sort of like something to hold me over to the official update.
Thank you in advance!
Custom ics roms arnt ready for primetime just yet boss. Ive had the most stability with drew garens ics builds. He makes awesome roms. Id link his site but its prolly against the rules here so to get to the site just type in his namedotcom

1,2,3,4.. alpha11 is the older version of cm9, thats why your having those issues. the more recent cm9 is much better. alpha13 is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20220591&postcount=2236
also, there are cm9 "kangs" these get compiled on a daily basis, so contain the most current cm9 code. cm9 kangs are the same as cm9 but compiled by someone else, whose not part of the cm team, but do get compiled from the same cm9 source. sometimes they contain cherries, extras that are waiting to get approved for cm. you can get them here, the latest is always on top, and the cherries are listed to the right. the latest one is just cm9 without cherries http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/skankwich/crespo/ and there is a thread supporting kangs here at xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369146
P6210 running stock honeycomb
the new firmware is PDA:LPC/CSC:LPC (xar)
Current firmware is PDA:LA3/CSC:LA3 (XAR)
I was wondering if I should bypass this update (I really don't know what it's for) so I'm not sure if it'll be more of a hassle & if it's going to change some of the customizations I've made (mainly root & GaryD9's read/write sd card permissions fix) or if it'll leave my tablet the way it is & just update the firmware like it should. I decidedI'm gonna wait until the official US ics is released til I update to ics since I've already waited this long. Is this update something you have to have to be able to update to ics? I am hesitant cuz I just hate when you do an update after you have everything absolutely perfect & then an update that's supposed to fix stuff messes other stuff up!

The new firmware is the ICS update.
Hi there.
It looks like we are not getting ICS here in Canada.
Mine 6210 runs HC with HDMI adaptor just fine.
Should I try to apply UK ICS ?
Will I loose HDMI feature?
Thanks.
