I have a big question that is been floating around in my mind.
We have CM7 which is based on ginngerbread and we got Eagle blood 1.03 which is gingerbread as well.
Why does it seems like eagle blood developers seems to develop way faster and have a more stable rom than CM7?
Is it because they had to port gingerbread to the G2x? If that its the case, wouldn't it be easier to grab the gingerbread leak and develop using that as the source?
eagle blood is from gingerbread leak and cyanogen isn't?
Also does it takes longer for CM7 to develop because they are adding more features to the ROM?
The reason I'm asking is because I had this questions and is nothing against CM7 directly at all, I just want to understand how they are doing it and see the benefits.
Thanks

Eagle Blood is based on the existing gingerbread leak with added tweaks.
Cyanodenmod is build completely from the ground up using the AOSP source code. It has features not found in ROMs released by manufacturers.
It's like modding an engine vs building an engine.

That clears up some of my doubts.
So basically they are using a gingerbread AOSP from google?
And what are the advantages of doing it this way instead of just grabbing a leaked ROM and tweak it.

Once they get the device-specific stuff ironed out, feature updates can be added easily across multiple devices.
For example, if you look at the CM7 changelog the unlabeled changes are to all GB devices and the entries labeled "p999" are changes specific to this device.

Better performance. Manufactures ROMs often end up with bad coding which results in a device suffering from things such as bad battery life, lower performance, etc. Also with official ROMs you can't do much with it until they release the source code. And even then (at least with samsung) some things like driver source never get released which means the devs cant fully optimize the ROM. AOSP means full control over the ROM to make it do what you want it to do the way you want it to be done. It does take much longer to complete though which is why CM has nightly updates. Makes it easier to put out a nightly than to put out a whole new ROM for every bug they fix. I'm sure someone can explain this better than me.

So it means that cyanogen even develop their own drivers?

You mentioned that you feel eaglesblood is more stable than CM7. Is this from personal experience or from reading the forums? In my experience, CM7 as of around nightly #11 has every significant bug worked out.

I must disagree. I LOVE CM 7 and ran build 11 and 13 and found it rather buggy right now. Sometimes the touch screen didn't recognize touches on the right side(I consider this a significant bug). When you call a number and have to punch in numbers (like a VM password or when dialing an extension) did not work for me(which I consider another significant bug). I also heard there are issues with it sticking APN settings(cant comment because I didnt really check that when I had cm 7 installed) I just dont think cm 7 is stable enough at the moment. Eagle Blood is running pretty well right now. I would say a lot better than cm 7 but that will change once CM gets the bugs worked out

Yes, personal experience. Been running eb 1.02 and is been great.
I Just flashed CM7 #15 just to test it out and is buggy for me
-When i receive a call i don't get any sound from the ringer even though is not muted
-Sensors are like in auto brightness even though they are not
-The performance of the whole system isn't the best.
I am sure it will be the best ROM out there but as for now still only and nightly and is buggy

One significant difference for me, which is due to the fact that Cyanogen has built their own rom with their different bluetooth stacks (as opposed to LG's custom ones), is that bluetooth controllers actually work with CM7. Useful for using a wiimote on emulators through HDMI
Just something to consider, no bluetooth controllers on EB.

Right, and not only that, cyanogen has many different phones he and his dev team have to work on.

Build #16 is out today and supposedly the TouchTones in the dialer and the backlight is fixed (thank god!)
But yes. Cyanogen builds their own kernel and drivers, which is why it usually is more compatible with stuff like WiiMotes and stuff. But once they get the Kernel working properly (which they are doing now) it is just a matter of updating the core OS then it can be pushed to all devices pretty seamlessly (I guess).
There are lots of benefits of using CM over standard stock Gingerbread. For one, Stock is 2.3.3 where CM7 is 2.3.4 so it supports lots of Googles new apps like Video in Google Talk and the new Cloud Music player.
Also there are tons of tweaks like Notification menu toggles, System Themes, Sound Profiles, Black-List calling, Several Lockscreen types and Widgets with Gesture support, etc the list goes on and on.
Between the Notification Toggles and Themes which you can install from the market, I'm hooked.
Plus it is the only Gingerbread rom that doesn't cause my phone to lockup/reset/Black Screen of Death/whateveryoucallit

Trigger is done, roman moved on. Xboarder stopped a long time ago.
There are about 5 left,

MIUI
CM7
Whitehawk's 2.3.3 & other stock-based roms
Faux's Nexus
That's it. I hope Krylon's & Whitehawk's up-coming rom is kick-ass.

Once the Prime or Hercules launch you can probably bet that it will be a complete afterthought
I may be off the mark but as far as I'm concerned, NVidia's the one who screwed us all by not releasing their source. In the absence of that development can only go so far. This will be my last NVidia device of any kind if I can help it -- for phones/tablets, I'm going with TI or Qualcomm and for laptops, I'm going with ... well, whatever I can get away with
I'm happy so long as CM7 keeps chugging along and the lge_star keeps getting device-specific updates.

Yeah Nvidia can suck it. ATI and for Computers and TI/Samsung/Qualcomm for mobile.
Nvidia has never been that open with their products. And likely never will.
I'm not worried about it. Its a pretty bad ass phone, once you get it working right. Trigger and Roman aren't necessarily gone...he's just working on other phones too. Plus, I'm sure new devs are getting some G2Xs every day. Somebody will step in to fill all the voids. Whitehawkx is around, Fits is busy, faux, and obviously the CM team...our world isn't so bleak. Hell, man...get the dev tools and make us something.

Whose MUIU are you using? The one here or the one over on the other site?
I'm using Jface's 8.19 rom since it was released a few weeks ago and aside from the lack of WiFi Calling and WiFi Tether, it is running like a dream. Battery is good and the phone is snappy. I was getting FC's with Rom Manager Premium but RM updated and now its good.
But really, CM and MIUI are pretty much the icing on the cake. Both are updated regularly by their respective teams.
It is also funny that this thread is right above "Nightlies are like crack". There are plenty of stuff to flash and try but right now, most roms are "as good as they can get "hardware-wise" aside from little tweaks and bug fixes all of them are working fairly well.
I need WiFi calling so that version isn't a viable option for me. There are still some little bugs with the version on the other site (having problem installing and applying themes). Once the bugs are worked out it would be a viable alternative to CM7. I still use Weapons as my daily ROM, and CM7 when I want Netflix. If CM7 or MIUI found a way to get HBO Go working and allowed HDMI output control I would probably start using them on a daily basis.

With minimal support from LG and Nvidia devs can only do so much. Most rooms have already become about as good as it's possible to be within their constraints.

Ya I just got this phone. This is the 13th android I ever had and definitely near the bottom for development. Not much variety and seems to be going downhill
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
You can't get much variety because this phone is based off Stock android. Can't really blame the devs if LG couldn't produce a respectable upgrade.
All the ROMs are based of CM7, AOSP, or Stock 2.3.3
If you seen one you seen them all. Can't have SENSE on this device. That would create more flavor of ROMs.
But the biggest deterrent is LG and NVIDIA. No support, you can only get so far. Lesson learned. Don't buy a device that has no love/support from manufacturer.
lately i've been upgrading less and less. i think once the phone gets to a stable environment (which is almost has) there really is less and less reason for development since it is stable.
There was someone that was looking into porting motoblur and optimus 2x but he seems to have gone AWOL

short answer: yes.
long answer: no, both suck when compared to other popular phones. They didn't even get cm7 beyond some early alphas not really suitable for daily usage.
you may want to look elsewhere if you wanna have an active development community (hint: sgs2)

Started to....but didnt want the hassle
But it is the users like you who halt development, I've noticed more so of people just wanting to give up all together because a device don't "officially" get this or that, hell I remember when the Speedy had no CM love, then toast comes along and builds it from ground up (basically) and BAM official CM support! Or when the shifts update was only to Sense 2.1 and we managed to squeeze Sense 3.0 into it....or my favorite when the EVO GB update still left them with Sense 1.0 and they were actually able to use the Shifts parts to upgrade their UI version. There are tons of things, really good things that can be done with Android and all it takes is someone NOT giving up...there will always be a workaround we just got to find it

When quad core phones start rolling, prices on these dual cores will drop like rocks. And the single core snapdragons and scorpions will become the best bargain since the $99 touchpad Honestly, there was no real need for me to jump from the G2 to the Doubleshot. But I wanted the extra beef under the hood. Lol, and the resale value.
I don't understand how people can compare QWERTYs and non QWERTYs. It's like apples to oranges. I would never "upgrade" to a Sensation, even for free. No keyboard = not the phone for me, no matter how much support it has.
Devs can crank out roms like no tomorrow, but that won't change the fact that I'm still missing a keyboard.

Alright so my mother has the G2x. I decided to messed around with it the other day and discovered that the stock GB ROM is a train wreck. I mean it's slow, laggy, buggy and quite frankly I'm not sure it does this phone justice considering the specs on it. She agreed to let me upgrade her phone to ICS after seeing how good my MT4GS was with it. But I'm looking for the most stable version of this for her phone. She's not a big game player, and she really only uses the GPS, camera, email, and facebook. Plus a couple of cross-training apps which I'm sure will port over fine.
That being said, which ROM can you guys recommend to me? Should I keep the stock GB, root to a GB ROM (if so, which one is best suited for her needs), or should I make the leap to ICS (if so which rom)? Thanks in advance!

I have read some pretty good things about the AOKP Builds on other forums, not to mention having had some solid experiences myself with their stuff. Anything you found tricky or otherwise potentially annoying?
Thanks for the tip, regardless!
You need to keep in mind these things before getting an ICS rom. As of now, none of the ICS rom has proper video recording working. You can only record low resolution video with videocam illusion. Video playback on netflix also does not work. If you don't mind these things, ICS roms are pretty stable. IMO, AOKP and Owain's ICS ROMs are pretty good. If you want stable and fast GB roms, try hellfire phoenix 2.1. They are all in dev thread.

What criteria? There's no reason why GPS, Facebook, Camera and Email wouldn't be working on any ROM. Perhaps the best thing to do is head over to the development section and clicking on any rom; read the list of features and you'll know what works and what doesn't work. Pretty much any ROM that isn't experimental is stable.
Now if you want my opinion on it, I'd suggest you to go with Hellfire for both GB and ICS.

ICS:

Given the quantity of ROMs, it'd be a lot easier to just get some opinions from a few people rather than scroll through 1,000 posts to find out which one is the most stable for her needs. The criteria stands, as I did not know that video recording didn't work. And considering that plenty of ROMs don't have stable MMS, wonky GPS, etc, they're relevant to ask.
I appreciate your opinion and input, thanks for it. But I didn't really need a lecture on how to look things up. If this thread causes you that much trouble, then just ignore it and I'm sure your day will be fine. Chances are good it won't affect you in any way. Agreed. Not that I don't use ICS, and not that I don't have ICS on my wife's phone, but if I were to put a rom on someone's phone that I don't have 24hr access to for updates, etc., it would be GB.
Well that's just how it is sometimes. You gotta actually work to find the answer to something.
It's nice we have such generous members like mt3g, MWBehr, dw9906 and zechizen, however, who are more than willing to give their input.
P.S. There's a search button to keep you from having to scroll through 1000's of posts. Ridiculous how you don't know that video recording doesn't work on ICS since there's a new post every few hours talking about LG and Nvidia not giving out drivers for the G2x.
Ya especially, if you aren't around to help out if something does go wrong. And artisan (I think is his name) is right there are two main threads that are just a couple scrolls down in GA section and Q&A that address which roms are being ran and one that address most stable.
p.s. owains ICS with Harsh latest kernel is best IMO ;-)

The current hacky state of ICS is not up to the task you are asking it to do here.
It's a reasonable question, sorry we seem to have more than our share of guys with their period at the moment.

Use cm7.2 rc and faux kernel.

Thanks a bunch for the input everyone. Decided to go with Owain's with harsh kernel, sounds pretty ballin' to me. And considering my mom gave me free reign to **** around with it, I'm all in with ICS

If she uses video camera I would go with one of the GB ROMs here, they don't have any of that stock LG crap holding it back.
Try Tsugi.

Hi, I have a wind mobile lg-p999dw (T-Mobile G2x)
I wanted to know that since official updates never came out for the g2x cyanogenmod and other roms were created.
Since it was an abandoned phone, developers put this phone in their priority list.
CM7 was very successful and it went all the way to a fully stable version of CM 7.2.
Ever since CM9 came out these teams lost hope.
Cyanogenmod, Eaglesblood, Hellfire, Paranoid Android, ...
When jellybean came out CM 9 for the G2x was abandoned at an early stage and development of CM 10 started.
My question is why, WHY WHY WHY hasn't a perfectly stable version of a jellybean rom for g2x not come out that is perfectly as stable like CM 7.2 while other phones like htc one x and samsung galaxy s iii that already get official updates and get the stable version of the rom?
Different reasons for different ROMs.
For some older ones there wasn't HWA, but a hacked together version that still wasn't perfect and things like the camera had issues.
For newer ones the only major problem seems to be that the radio just isn't working.
It came down to LG not releasing drivers/code. People could hack together some things, but that could only get us so far. LG did a lot of weird things with their code, I believe.
At least, in my lurking and search, that's how I understand it. I'd love to see a fully working jellybean rom for the G2x since my girlfriend got it from me as a hand me down.
Take a look through adampk's CM10.1 thread in the development section and it's User Thread here in the general section. You'll get a good view at what's not working and what everyone has tried. Maybe you can even help out.

You have to understand that most of CM9 and CM10 builds right now are based on a deprecated kernel and a modified android framework, known as "hackfest", which lacks many functions needed in the newer OSes. If you try Adampk's build 6 with, optionally, my kernel, you will see that it is really stable and works well, but not the radio. This is being worked on actively.
Most of the teams you specified simply switched to a newer model, not because of a compatibility issue. Cyanogen left us because our phone maintainer, RC, couldn't fix the radio. If he did release it anyways he would've received a lot of complains, which he didn't want.
Why why why... Wah wah wah..

Do a search for baseband.zip, or look in these topics, there should be links in them.

WOW that worked great! Thank you very much. Do you know if there is a solutions for the bluetooth not connecting or no audio on bluetooth?
Downgrading your baseband to 2.3.3 is only known way to get working audio for Bluetooth calling at the moment

LOL yeah I guess you could do that too. I'm just way too much of a tweaker/modder/flashcrazy to keep a stock phone!

Based on experience, it is generally not a good idea to mess with your wife's phone . LOL.
