I don't know if SHIP S-OFF will allow you to do what ENG S-OFF (ENG=Engineering).

do i need to have a eng s-off device to flash custom ROM?

Calm down, no need to post multiples of the same thing
Like I mentioned, I don't know what SHIP S-OFF allows you to do. It may, or may not, give you engineering capabilities. We won't know for sure until others who have SHIP S-OFF chime in with their findings. It's most likely the case though, as changing ROMs and kernels is an engineering function.

[Q] Difference between SHIP S-OFF and ENG S-OFF

I bought a used Inspire 4G , and I notice it states SHIP S-OFF, so I am wondering whats the difference between SHIP S-OFF and ENG S-OFF? Can I flash any Inspire 4G ROMs for SHIP S-OFF? ( I did flash Andriod Rev)

You can flash ROMs with S-off like you have now if you're rooted. ENG off is for flashing a new radio. Before you even think about flashing a new radio, read everything possible on here about it. It can be very risky and leave you with a bricked Inspire. Be aware of that before you dive into that ball pit.
Specifically, SHIP=Shipping bootloader
ENG=Engineering bootloader. Use ENG at your own risk.

You do not need eng s-off to flash radio firmware updates. Use the method in the hack kit as an example of how to do it with only radio s-off and a shipping hboot. It's easy, safer and more reliable than fastboot flashing.
The main advantage to eng hboot is for developers testing kernels. You can safely fastboot boot images. The average user has no good reason to be fooling with fastboot flash.

Ok - this is a great post because I need to return my Inspire to stock. When I go to bootloader I have:
ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF
I'm still rooted because I want to use my Inspire for another couple of weeks before returning. I also have gotten rid of Radio S-Off because I'm not gonna flash any radio's from the stock one that I'm using now.
Is the above bootloader what the stock bootloader came with ?? In other words , if I flash over a stock RUU will I be ready for return ? I just can't remember what my bootloader said when I bought it (I would assume it was "S-On")

I doubt that most reps would check if your phone had S-off in the boot loader. As long as you have the stock rom on the phone when you return it in case they look at the functionality I pretty sure you are ok anyway.
Why bring it back though? What are you picking up instead?
Can someone post a tutorial on how to get radio s-off? Do you need to go back to complete stock?

s-off, or s-on? To get s-off, just follow the hack kit instructions.
I did follow the hack kit. What I'm trying to do is get radio s-off. What I'm asking is, should I follow the hack kit, and then restore the Desire HD stock ROM and run the Desire HD hacks for radio s-off?
so i have eng s-off and flashed a new radio, is there any danger of having eng s-off if it is not tinkered with?
Why do all of my questions go unanswered? Do i smell bad?

You've lost me. If you followed the hack kit, then you should have radio s-off already and have a rooted ROM with the ability to run most any "hack" you want.
If you've followed the hack kit and are rooted and now want to go back to stock with radio security back on, then that's something entirely different.

There shouldn't be. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the danger is in what you can accidentally mess up through bootloader commands when you have eng s-off. Normal flashing of ROMs, ect. shouldn't pose any threat.

Finally got it working. I re-ran the hack-kit.
Just flashed the newest test radio (running CM7 test 22) and I have to say, the speeds, up and down, are amazingly fast compared to the stock radio. I'll post more impressions later.
Also picked up a 1600MAH battery. So far, so good.

You don't NEED ENG S-Off to flash a radio
See this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002226) thread
You can just use a PD98IMG.zip and flash through HBoot - much safer this way. If you really want, here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403) is the one click ENG S-Off tool

easier way to get engineering S-off?

hey i've installed a couple of roms on my phone then installed that stock att radio over one, it was great, nearly doubled my battery live and reception was excellent, but after trying miui and doing a nandroid restore of my old rom when i try to flash the radio again it tells me "FAILED remote: not allowed"
i see this tutorial here but im wondering if theres a gui one click for it and how come its not included with the S-off and rooting business?

eng s-off is engineering s-off.
First thing if you aren't compiling a kernel and trying to run it then you should not eng s-off your phone there are other methods. (go to our dev section and look for the radio thread)
Second if you didn't know (could figure out) eng s-off is the engineering hboot then, you probably shouldn't try to mess with that level of the phone ... no?

Eng s-Off is completely unnecessary for the only level of radio control most of us mortals need... Flashing different radios.
This eng s-Off radio method, in all it's obsolete glory, sure has legs...
I'm sure it doesn't help matters that it still appears to be the "official" method over on the desire hd radio thread. There sure isn't any post here in the inspire sections that continue to endorse this method.
ok just tried this, when using the visionary app it didnt reboot when i tried permaroot so i rebooted it myself, then when using S-off one click it tells my my bootloader is corrupt
edit: computer had bad drivers worked with my other one thanks yall!!

[Q] S-on after s-off

So I am as excited as everyone else about s-off. Been waiting for awhile, but in the haste of everyone rooting their phone, I haven't been able to find a thread about restoring s-on in case of warranty work. Have I over looked something?
lots of views but no comments. This is from the IRC if interested
<splayer7> sorry if this has been asked, but what about resuming s-on for warranty work?

Exactly what has been said. There is no unrooting or S-On restoring at this time. I would just wait if you haven't already. HTC Released their source codes today. Its only a matter of time before an easier root is available with unroot, and S-on.
Was told that we could s-on by running the RUU. Here's a link to some I've found but haven't tested any of this. http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/06/htc-sensation-ruushipped-roms-packaged.html

do we have any confirmation on this working correctly
Tried it, resets your ROM but doesn't reset s-off
Guys.. There is about a 25% chance at best that HTC will actually check the boot loader status before providing warranty service. Even if you are unlucky and they do, if you make enough noise they might make an exception and let you off the hook. I think that as long as the issue that you are trying to resolve isn't a direct result of s-off or root, it should be fine.

Are you sure man? Somebody else above tested and found the opposite..
If the ruu is left untampered with, the boot image will be replaced with a stock one. Boot image is where your s-off lives. So in theory it should without a doubt work. You just have to make sure the boot image is in the ruu

I used the rom.zip file included in an untouched RUU, and I checked it includes HBOOT, also saw version change when I went into HBOOT.
It does NOT reset S-OFF back to S-ON.
I dont know if when you flash it reads S-OFF so keeps it, for users who genuinely had S-OFF?
I have personally tested this, and can confirm that using HTC's stock RUU does not return the phone to S-ON. However, it did remove the top area that says revolutionary, so now it appears as though I have a factory S-OFF device
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
bummer.. I really hope there is a way to reverse s-off, just in case. but then again, I do have insurance so I guess I could say it was 'stolen' if I really need to get it replaced
prank1 said:
For those worrying about warranty issues..
You can try flashing the correct RUU for your phone.
IF that doesn't get rid of -revolutionary- s-off, then you can flash the ENG HBOOT (which gets rid of -revolutionary- but gives you ENG S-OFF) then you can flash the correct RUU for your region (which will definitely get rid of ENG S-OFF, and make you official stock HBOOT S-ON)
Click to collapse
Try flashing ENG HBOOT, then the RUU afterwards.
I am going to try to get my phone back to S-ON now, just to test everything
EDIT
Hmm, very odd indeed, after flashing the RUU I have 'stock' Radio S-OFF (no -Revolutionary-) , I tried fastboot oem write secuflag 1 and fastboot oem writecid HTC__001 but I am still Radio S-OFF.
Just so people know, flashing full RUUs, even HBOOTs do NOT get rid of Radio S-OFF. Thats why it is favored by people, it can only be turned S-ON specifically by tools which may be released for the Sensation in the near future. I thought these tools only sent the commands that I tried to change the Radio security status. It would appear not.
However
There is no need to worry, Radio S-OFF probably won't void your warranty (if you sent it to a HTC repair center), as long as you have the correct CID and ROM installed you should be fine.
If I remember correctly, with the past Android phones, some people randomly got S-OFF (like sensation users did) out of the box. The HTC repair center didn't care. They don't like custom ROMs, custom HBOOTs, rooted ROMs, etc

That begs a witty reply, but I'll supress the urge...
You don't need to flash another HBOOT unless you want to flash another ROM that requires a different HBOOT version. Some (as they say) 'Re-engineered' HBOOTS also don't allow Fastboot commands, keep that in mind when deciding on one. Some programs such as 'Android Flasher' say they require an ENG HBOOT to work etc... Once again it comes down to what YOU want as dan fish mentioned.

but there are many threads saying its better to flash eng hboot...than revolutionary??
Yes, they say it's better according to THEIR needs. Do some research on just what different HBOOTS including the Eng one can accomplish, then decide if you really need to change. And yes, some HBOOTS do not accept Fastboot commands after you've flashed them.
Just relax, ignore the hype[excited opinions], analyze facts and then decide.
Do not go mindlessly flashing stuff just because ppl say it's bettah...

Okey, but I mean, is the phone the same after the process? Or does anything change(for an example, does the operative system change it something?).
Thanks for answering I really appreciate it

It is possible, but there are also phones that were shipped as S-Off. You can know if your phone was used befor by removing the back cover, after some use it tends to collect some dust. Replacing the back cover itself is easy and it makes the phone look new. However, if your phone functions properly, there is absolutely no problem.
Enjoy your new Sensation
