Today I received a new Sim-free (but S-On) Sensation as a replacement for my old Hero. Hero had been working fine with my wifi (WPA2 mixed).
I then swapped Sim into the Sensation and booted it. I also reflashed my Hero with VR13, which I had been using as I am giving the phone to my parents. Both phones will connect to my router BUT neither can access any sites or data. IF I take the security off then they can connect. This is not ideal though.
Does anyone know how to solve this? Or as to why this has suddenly happened?

Did you try the wifi protected setup option? When I hit it, the prompt then says to press the WPS (wifi protected setup) button on your wireless point for 5 secs...
Negative on that one too my friend. Ahh well, I will try it on another router and see what happens

Just got a G1 used off eBay and it connects to my WIFI access point just fine. But, I can't access anything over it. It just says that the web page is unavailable. The eBay seller says it is my access point but it works well with other phones as well as laptops. Also, the cellphone can't seem to find any cell networks although I have good signal here. It did find the network once and worked for about 30 minutes before crapping out again. By the way, the eBay seller is refusing to refund my money.
Try connecting to another wifi router with the G1 and see if it works, then report back and I'll help try solve the problem.
I tried a different access point. Mine is a Gigabyte so I tried a Linksys. I had to set it up so that the AP is providing DHCP. Strange thing is that my router which connects to the WAN side of the AP is also providing DHCP. However, after setting it up this way, WIFI works as it should. Now, on to my other problems. Thinking that the Cyanogen ROM could be the problem, I went back to the old RC29. Now, I have to get the phone registered and Cyanogen installed again. Thanks for the suggestion.
Ok I'm having a very annoying issue on my Inspire 4G. The phone recognizes my home wifi network and goes in a loop trying to connect and then reconnect. I have several other devices connecting to the wifi flawlessly - (iMac, iPad, Xbox, etc). Does the Inspire just get weak wifi signal strength, or is there something wrong with my phone? I'm considering returning it to get the Atrix. I also know other people have commented saying that they have this issue also. Is there a fix? Thanks

Had this problem. Went into wifi settings and clicked on the access point that it was trying to connect to. It asked me for my credential storage password or something (different than access point password) and after typing that in all has been well ever since.
i got the same problem.. connected to network but it wont let me use internet at all

Check your battery cover and sim card cover. Make sure that they are both installed properly with no gaps.
If you downgraded you phone using attn1 guide thats well known problem. I had same problem i flashed rom coredroid 6.8 and all is fine now.

Hello,
since the last FOTA update from HTC to 1.45.403 (Android 2.3.4) I can no longer connect WLAN devices to the internet via WiFi-Hotspot on my HTC Sensation!
Before that update it worked.
The devices (tried it out with a Samsung TV and the original WiFi-stick connected and a WD multimedia box, both worked flawlessly before) successfully find the Sensation's AP, successfully connect to it and also the DHCP test succeeds.
However no internet connection then works.
Did anyone of you experience the same?
Could it be that this FOTA update sent by HTC now requires some software token to be sent by your mobile operator enabling WiFi tethering, hence defaulting tethering via firmware to "disable"?
Mobile operators do not like tethering, but they cannot detect (and consequently block) it easily - unless (just my speculation, no idea if this is the reason, why it won't work anymore) HTC would change WiFi tethering and internet sharing via 3G to default off on software level.
I have to mention that I have an unbranded HTC Sensation without any operator-specific software and the update did not come from the operator but from HTC.
(Or at least that's what I saw.)
Any advice ?
Thanks in advance.
Correction:
Software version is: 1.45.401.3
Have you tried using different security settings for the WiFi hotspott? Go to settings\wireless & networks\Portable WiFi hotspot settings. You have three settings WEP 128, WAP (TKIP), and WPA2 (AES). Mine is set to WPA2 (AES).
Problem is that it does not even work with security settings switched off
I really feel lost.
Could it be that other apps interfere?
But I'd rather doubt.
If you are using the WiFi Hotspot app that came preinstalled on the sensation from tmobile and you dont have a "Tethering Data Plan" they will eventually figure you out and block the app from working.... I found this out myself and had to go ask the nice lady at the Tmobile store why it happened... and that's why.
I can verify that at a certain point of data usage tmous will cut off wifi tethering. They can tell the data is being shared n want u to pay monthly for the service. Found out from a Friend who is a tmo employee.
Although I'm still tethering free for the time being..
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
Mine does that too now, any way around it
I could be off on this, I work at TMO and I know the Amaze and GSII shipped with the ''latest'' SIM cards, which we were told had to be used for WiFi calling to work correctly, but oddly enough thats when I noticed tethering quit working on all out demo's
Works flawlessly with CM7 for me.
Actually today and yesterday works just fine for me.... so i dont know why it did the one day but no problems now..... wierd
my branded sensation stopped wifi tethering 2 days ago and i just tried and its is working now... Kinda weird i gurss . . Maybe it was because i used 5.46gb of data this month....?

I would like to know if there is any way I can have my WiFi internet on my MT4GS,without my Sim card in the phone .Probably just surfing the net or using "whats app". I have tried and my cell doesn't connect to the WiFi router at all.Can someone advise on settling this matter ? My phone is unlocked and rooted.I haven't taken the update,so I'm still on the stock ROM.
I used my old windows touch pro 1 cell and it connects to the WiFi router without Sim card.So what can I do to get the WiFi internet on my MT4GS?
You should just have it.
I have two of these devices - one on T-Mobile, the other bought aftermarket out of plan. No sim card, yet I connect to wifi everywhere, even use it as a wifi bridge to my router for a desktop in my home.
Just go into settings, wireless settings, then turn on wifi and tap 'wifi settings' underneath it. You should see your network in the list, just tap it and enter a password if necessary.
Done.
This doesn't work for you?
Sim card has nothing to do with wifi, only cellular.
Maybe the fact that your phone is rooted. But I don't know my rooted cliq is rooted an connects to WiFi fine...

I don't think so - I just got it back from HTC and it's not rooted yet, still stock the same way I shipped it out to them. Gets on wifi fine with no sim card.
It does have an S-OFF bootloader, but I don't see how that would matter.
I do find this curious.
What exactly happens when you try to connect to a wifi network?
Does it even see the wifi networks?
Where does the ability to connect fail?
You should be able to connect. It'll have that option at the HTC setup wizard.

Says scanning ,then tries to acquire ip address then it disconnects and starts all over with the same result.Secondly I remembered the last two programs that were causing me problems in installing and uninstalling were Bloater and Busybox ,before my WiFi went haywire.I gave up trying and hence I was preparing to send my cell back to HTC, since it was still within the warranty period.I unrootted my cell and now my WiFi works again. So i really can't say exactly what caused this malfunction as yet .Thank you guys, for such quick responses. This really makes me feel proud to be part of an outstanding group of people here, and as whole, part of xda-developers.I thank you all for your help an assistance.Hopefully this information might help someone else someday.
Maybe it's your router

No my girlfriend, has the same phone with me and it connected .Had tried another router and it still didn't connect.
I do it all th time with several brands of phones. I have had problems the constanly connecting and reconnecting when there are too many devices around at the same time.
Sometimes it is the router and internet going through "spells".

Yes, "innerwebs" with wifi works without a sim card.
My g2 AND my other 4g slide both connect to my router without a sim in them.
But they are rooted with different roms so......
Hi,
I have a really strange issue that is impacting my mothers A9.
She has had it for almost 6 months. Not that it changes anything but it is a Telstra branded HTC A9 and using a Vodafone sim.
The Wifi has issues connecting to a number (not all) wifi access points
This was first identified when connecting to my brothers home wifi. It could see that AP and the security code is correct (case sensitive etc) but it refused to connect.
There is no issue with wifi connectivity at her home.
I tried connecting to my HTC M8 in hotspot mode to no avail.
We then added a second AP to my brothers place and using a different AP name (same password) it worked! I thought that there may be some chipset compatibility, but that wouldnt explain why she couldnt connect to my HTC M8 in hotspot mode.
I ended up buying the same handset for my dad.
Last night he had no issues connecting to my HTC M8 in hotspot mode, but my mothers was still no connection! It tries but gives up.
Using the same Wifi security WPA-PSK I was able to connect her phone to my Iphone 7+ in hotspot mode.
This truelly has my stumped.
BTW I upgraded them both to the latest approved OS.
What do you think is up with my mothers handset?

Try a network setting reset. Go to backup and reset> reset network reset. Probably just a minor error of some sort
Or try upgrading to CyanogenMod. If you were to use it as a daily driver..use the latest nightly and do bi-weekly updates
