If the bootloader is unlocked, why no gingerbread? - Samsung Infuse 4G

I'm not sure that I understand unlocked bootloaders. If there is no lock, why is there not already a gingerbread Rom out for this phone? What is stopping any dev from making a gingerbread Rom?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App

Having to rewrite that majority of the code for the OS for the infuse might be a little bit of a time constraint.
/sarcasm
But really, there is no proper port out for the infuse and I think the devs are just waiting for a gingerbread ROM to leak out, whether it is from the Canadian Infuse or elsewhere

Simple. The Android userland license doesn't require manufacturers to release source code for the userland portion of the Android stack - the only thing that manufacturers must release source code for is the kernel.
So all device-specific userland code must be reimplemented to get AOSP running on a device.
In many cases, even if someone had device-specific Froyo userland source, a lot of changes were made from Froyo to Gingerbread that require device-specific stuff to be reimplemented. (Look at the state of xdandroid for example - Gingerbread is missing a LOT of stuff that works in Froyo.)
So what is stopping developers from a Gingerbread ROM for the Infuse?
1) Time
2) Time
3) Time
4) Probably lack of documentation on some of the device-specific stuff, fortunately the Infuse is very architecturally similar to the Galaxy S series.
5) Time
6) Lack of the right device in the right developer's hands - the Cyanogenmod guys are so experienced at device porting that between that despite 4), they could likely target the Infuse quickly if one of them had a device. None do yet, there are some threads where people are trying to line up hardware donations.
Please not that to my knowledge, there are ZERO AOSP-source-derived builds for the Infuse for any Android version. All ROM builds currently in existence are "tweaked" variants of the stock Android userland stuff.

Ah hah, I see now. I was assuming this Rom I am using on my inspire was not an official gingerbread Rom, now I know that it must be.
Given samsungs track record for updates. I'm nervous to switch to this phone because it may never receive gingerbread

I'm not saying it's impossible to port AOSP GB or the Cyanogenmod source tree to the Infuse, I'm just saying it hasn't happened yet. The Infuse has been out for a few months less than the Inspire, and it took some time for CM7 to become stable on the Inspire too.
In the case of the Inspire it apparently has. The Cyanogenmod team seems a bit HTC-focused, however that's because Samsung seems to be a slightly later player in the Android game. Samsung is clearly interested in catching up - they already donated a GSII to one of the Android devs.
My guess is that the Infuse is similar enough to the GS i9000 that once the right dev gets their hands on one it won't be long. After all, we're using the CWM from the i9000.

The thing to keep in mind, the most important thing actually, is that all of these things take time AND the efforts of a team of people to accomplish. Every well-known/famous/appreciated dev I've ever spoken too about this very topic all says the same thing - they can't do these things alone OR they can do it alone but it'll take forever to get done.
Hence my donation thread

this is my 6th android phone, and I can say it's the only one I'm not in a huge hurry to put a custom ROM on
I loaded ADW EX on it, and the phone's fast enough to run it buttery smooth with no lag. I also absolutely hate Cyanogenmod's camera software, and really enjoy the native camera software on Samsung devices.
I was considering the Evo 3D instead of keeping the Infuse (still in 30 days) but I'm not sure I could move back to an HTC screen. I hated the screen on my mytouch 4g (went there from the Vibrant). Samsung also flat out makes far better camera hardware and software on their phones.
I don't see any reason to get a different phone right now

Oh my. +99
Sent from the future.
I await all ROMs with gingerbready Greatness!!
And to be honest, I thought we'd be a little ways into Jan before we seen the source code. Glad it took just 1 day after the Nexus S release. Now, the many-months wait for OEMs to get Official updates out to the devices =\
if that was sent from the future, that comment must mean that you are afraid for us because something is WRONG with gingerbread because you would have KNOWN about this already! LOL so HOW IS IT?!?!?
Yay!

Yet still no official 2.2 for us.... awesome.
Is this different from what was dropped last week?

How did GB source C drop before FroYo????????
If you are referring to what I posted, it was source code
For the Nexus S kernel Android version 2.3
And yes, pretty cute we have available source code for a new
OS before we seen a piece from any Android 2.2 source code for our Epic

I think the million dollar question is what are the predictions for an official 2.2
rom for our Epics? jk but I think after samsung and sprint gets ahold of it first.
Otherwise it would be another AOSP like cyanogen.
I've got a related (and hopefully not stupid) question regarding the process.
So, I know we're waiting for the 2.2 kernel source for our epics, obviously.
Generally, what's the process in between Google dropping a version's source, and it being released (by samsung) to us? This is not a complaint-- I'm really just curious how it works.

I know someone can explain better than I can.
Google drops the stock rom. This wont run on our phones without drivers, and support for specific hardware for our device. Then you have Sprint carrier modifications like VVM, ota updates, 4G and other configured apps. After all the work is done, developers can go back and modify things to their liking.
Otherwise you would have a from the ground up like CM,
where its a lot of trial and error, getting the ROM to support hardware/software.

I'm no developer or expert, but i'd give it a week or two before we see a slew of ROMs, maybe less. Its great that Cyanogen has 4G working on the Evo, so cant wait for 4G-enabled CM6/7 for our Epics. As for an official 2.3 update from Samsung.... March is my earliest guess

I'd say we get official 2.2 updates in a few weeks. The leak is out, so they are probably just cleaning it up for release. The plain-jane (no custom ROM) leak works flawlessly on my phone tho.
At this point Noobnl is going to deliver faster than Samsung is on the Froyo. He's got CM pretty much done it seems. Whenever Cyanogen's done with gingerbread source for CM7(im presuming) noobnl will hopefully start on that as well.
I bet that the hardware drivers for 2.2 will work with 2.3, sounds like 2.2 to 2.3 is a lot less of a change than 2.1 to 2.2, but I could be wrong.

For Samsung it's more rational for them to use their dev's time to spend on making new working firmware for new devices that are debuting at CES and to ready the firmware for those devices.
Samsung's strategy has changed over the years and is now executing the mantra "first out the door with new technology." While this is great for those of us who like new toys, it's a set back when we want long term support for our new toys. If their R&D resources are tied up working out new firmware for the next gen, they lose focus on their current customers.
If you've kept up on the latest engadget, gizmodo, boy genius, etc etc news - you'll know there's a dual core super duper galaxy whatever chip coming out soon. That's where the resources are now. For a company that has been lagging behind in innovation for the last few years in the mobile area, this is their new direction... Innovate quickly and be the first to market. Support resources are but a second thought; overhead.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...uct-crisis-as-choi-tries-to-triple-sales.html might give you a better perspective of the company.
So if I am reading this right....
Once we have CM6 running on our epics it will be a lot easier for us to get Gingerbread installed; for that matter any new verisions?
Does this really need to be in the Epic section?

[Q] How many of us came over from a G1?

A fun question. How many of us Sidekick 4G owners bought them to replace our rusty, err, trusty G1s? I get the feeling a lot of us made such a migration.
I held onto my G1 until last month, since I could find no other Android phone on the UMTS 1700 band with a keyboard so good. I just couldn't bear the thought of using a touch screen all day. When I saw the Sidekick's I knew I had to have one. And while I do miss that old workhorse, I've also enjoyed my time with the Sidekick. It's nice to finally have a current phone for once in my life!
I ended up selling that G1, cracked screen housing and all, to a friend for $50. Not only is it his first Android device, but also his first smart phone. With the addition of a new battery and a fresh ROM it should have another year or even two of life in it.
I had the G1 until I finally had an upgrade. Still have my trusty G1 just in case something magically goes wrong.
Didnt come straight from the g1 but had it when it first came out. I thought it was one of the cheapest built smartphones ive had but instead ended up being one of the toughest and survived many drops. i miss the g1's design. Im one of the few that thought it looked nice.

I'm seriously thinking about buying this phone... I miss my G1's kb, I've been putzing along with the og Droid for a couple years (I was living in the states). Now that I'm back in Canada, I need a replacement. I'm not thrilled with the lack of decent camera, but that sweet sweet keyboard looks oh so nice. I do a lot of remote server admin and so the keyboard is a big deal for me.
Are the ROMs any good? I don't need the fancy crap it looks like they've piled on top, just a standard type Android UI would be nice for me.
Failing this I'd probably get the Milestone/Droid 3, but it's been getting kinda meh reviews.
The ROMs aren't bad, we're still improving each release, but they're much better than stock. Not sure exactly what you like in a ROM, but as far as Froyo Touchwiz goes, these are pretty solid. If you do happen to get this phone and find that the ROM selection isn't what you are looking for, PM me and we'll see what we can do to get a ROM made that fits your desires.

Thanks, that's very generous of you! Really all I want is to use the phone as a palmtop computer... browser, email, SSH, etc. I don't care much about eye candy or special effects, speed and efficiency are my main concerns. Not so much concerned with it as a social media platform either as an IT consultant's accessory Oh, and Google Navigation!
To give you an idea, here's my apps:
ConnectBot
AndroidVNC
ES File Explorer
Files Anywhere
K-9 Mail
PdaNet
QR Droid
Wifi Analyzer
SipDroid
Skype
Remote Web Desktop
Square
SwiftKeyX
etc
Didn't come directly from a g1 but I bought the g1 the first day it came out, had it until cyanogen stopped supporting it, and then tried out several different phones and none of them satisfied me. I could never get used to an all touchscreen device and most keyboards were very lacking. The sidekick has the best keyboard I have ever used, I like it better than the g1's. I still keep my g1 and use it for a bluetooth keyboard on my ipad/ps3 since blueputdroid doesn't support samsung's bluetooth drivers for some reason.
Sounds just like me! I work in IT as well and use most of those apps as well, and as far as i've found, there's no issues with them, and the keyboard is an IT person's best friend.
I'm getting the Sidekick in a couple days. Coming from the Mytouch 1.2 I have a couple roms I developed in the G1 section. I was wondering if and why there is no Gingerbread for Sidekick? Just curious. Also does anyone know if CM will support it? Thanks. I'm new to the Sidekick.

There's no gingerbread for it because there's no gingerbread source. CM probably won't officially support it, as CM doesn't officially support anything Samsung other than the Galaxy S. When we get the GB source, someone (probably me) will at least try porting an unofficial CM7, but until we get the source, there's no efficient way to port it.

Sent from my Mytouch 1.2 using XDA Premium App!
Odin flashes firmware like fastboot does for HTC phones (kind of).
Odin is used to restore to stock from any state other than a hard brick. It just restores system images to the partitions.
Voodoo is the set of tweaks commonly used to implement the Lagfix, aka EXT4 partitions. Voodoo ClockworkMod recovery is Red, and is implemented in the Bali kernel.
I would be open to working with you on it, as I am for most people on most projects, let me know if you ever wanna work on anything together.

is this a joke or are u serious ?
No joke. I asked if it would be getting a 2.3 update and she said they are trying to make it so that by the end of the year all major (and sk4g is considered major) android phones will be on gingerbread. she specifically said sidekick will get 2.3 and I quote "There is no date yet, but they are trying to get it by the end of the year"
Of course, you have to keep in mind that I am taking someone elses word for it. albiet, it is someone "on the inside"
In the works is very different from saying "by year's end." Samsung makes builds and sends them to Tmo, but they never make it out to the end-user until they approve it. It's very likely that the sidekick will be one of the last of the "new" phones to get GB, as they have to add much more to our UI than just porting it to fit our processor, but also need to add the social parts of our phone (whether we want them or not).
P.S. GB has been "in the works" since the phone was released, it's all a matter of getting Tmo and Samsung to agree on what constitues a good/ releasable build.
I have the strange feeling that our sk4g won't ever get gingerbread officially t-mobile has a funny way of coming out with new devices rather than updating the original ones :-/ I forsee a new sidekick with gingerbread official coming out rather than us getting an official build. Don't quote me on it or anything its pure speculation but if I'm right give me some props or something lol
Not to say we won't find a way of porting the "new sk gingerbread" to th sk4g but I have a feeling the new device is more likely hell they may even release gingerbread for us and the new sk at the same time lol
The moral of this story is: personal opinions are fun. Aren't they? Lol

For those counting, as soon as the GB source for the SGS4G gets released I can port their GB system to our phone, their ROMs/Kernels boot on our phones, they just don't have the drivers to do anything (like display what's going on).
The SGS4G has been getting leaked versions of GB for a month+ now, so the official GB release should be soon (hopefully).

Cyanogenmod6 port possible?

Possibly a noob question but since cyanogenmod7 is based off gingerbread an there is a froyo based cyanogenmod6 for the google G1 is it possible to do a port over to our phone since its froyo as well. I know drivers an such would have to be messed with but least we could have cyanogen on our phones even if its not the latest gingerbread powered version.
I don't know why people find cyanogen roms to be the be all end all of android. Not saying that I don't want them, but they're not the only thing that makes a phone good. CM6 is based off of the same kernel as CM7 which requires a newer source than we have.
Cyaongen mod roms are rubbish, they contain many bugs that are dealbreakers anyways. I know the devs are hard at work, but any current rom in these sk forums have far less bugs than cm. Cm7 on my mytouch 4g was horrible. Not belittling anyone, but just speaking from experience and hardships with those roms since the old g1 days.
Insanedrunk.....you are so ignorant if you believe Cyanogen ROMs are rubbish.
First off, the "ROMs" in the Sidekick 4G forum are nothing more than modified T-Mobile ROMs....that's all they are....nothing more.
Cyanogen and his team completely rebuild Android from scratch, that's why it's called "AOSP". Their ROMs require far more knowledge than simply zipaligning, deodexing, and deleting junk applications. If you have ever even attempted to build Android using the SDK, you would respect these guys.
You obviously are some n00b that doesn't even understand the concept of Android rooting and modding at all.
Please, if all you can do with Android is talk crap to legitimate developers, go somewhere else, you don't even deserve to type xda-DEVELOPERS into your address bar.

Actually, AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. It's plain vanilla android, from google's source. Yes, eventually into CM6 and 7 they got more hacky with it, but up to CM5, it was just standard google source releases patched together.

What's so different about this phone

I haven't seem any vanilla android roms for this phone so what's wrong with it? I planned on getting one but not so sure anymore.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
It's not a single problem with this device , but the stock OS Froyo came out in 2008 so it's pretty old , but samsung modified it to the way they want it , don't get me wrong there's no vanilla device's but there are modified froyo device's that are great , we don't have gingerbread yet .
So why is it so hard to port a gingerbread Tom? I'm not a developer or anything just wondering
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Porting Gingerbread is difficult because that would require rewriting all of the specially designed drivers for the sidekick for the GB kernel.
Vanilla ports are difficult because they rely on a stock styled framework, which due to the way the drivers were written, is very different on the sidekick.
you would have to rewrite alot of thing's including driver's that's why where using froyo .
Oh ok...so even vanilla froyo isn't gonna happen?

I'm working on CM6, my hangup is with the camera/camcorder driver system, the way they defined camera parts is very bizarre. AOSP froyo/CM6 are on-again-off-again projects for me, they will just require more work than other phones have in the past (or maybe I'm just not experienced in CM, who knows).
Hmm interesting. Well thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm just gonna get the g2. Even though I love you guys for your work I feel like the g2 is gonna have a lot more options especially with ics. Again thanks.

Why would they code this phone differently than the other Galaxy S series phones? Is it the keyboard? I'm beginning to wonder if Samsung knew what they were doing when they built this phone...it's TM's last of the 4G Galaxy phones to be upgraded to GB, and when I lurk the TM forums it's just nothing but negativity towards it. I'm glad I root/ROM. It saved me from the massive fit I would have thrown at Magenta.
And while I'm here, vick, how's the SGS4G code looking? Is it as "close" to the SK as you thought it was?
Well yes and no, the sgs4g has the same processor, so that portion of the kernel was done for me, but the screen driver wasn't yet built for GB, and would require significant tweaking. I have been working on finals around here for classes, hopefully I'll find some time shortly to continue working on it.
